According to reference book that I have neither Zoot nor the song Eleanor
Rigby are mentioned in relation to anything in the top 50... and I've never
come across Zoot in any second hand record shops ever, so...

At the 26th Street flea market in NYC I paid a dollar for this album _ I
think the "group" were called The Buggs (or is it the Liverpool Beats??)
and splashed across the front of the sleeve it says "Direct from Liverpool
England!" There were a couple of Merseybeat covers and the rest of the
songs had great titles like "Soho Stomp" etc. But when you play the record
none of these great song titles have any connection with the songs on the
record! What a bummer it must have been for those poor schmucks who bought
it back in '64... - PJ

I'd recommend the Keith Moon biography to anyone. Can't remember the author

The new issue of Shindig! will have an article on the Tampa Bay Florida

I'm sure Mojo will plug it again when it's ready

Baskerville Rob, I've e-mailed you off list with a contact who may well be

I'm kinda late w/ this, but while on the topic of musicians /
recording artists who have played professional sports it should be
pointed out that Charley Pride played baseball before becoming a huge
country star. He played for the Detroit Eagles and the Memphis Red
Sox, both of which were teams in the American Negro League. Don't
know what year(s) he played, but judging from his year of birth (1938)
it was definitely after Jackie Robinson joined the Brooklyn Dodgers,
but before the Negro leagues folded completely.

Hola,
I just got a promo package from the above label today.
I honestly think the Mt. McKinnleys are such a bag 0'festering shit.
They're nuthin more than a 15th grade Mudhoney. I was really appaled
after people on 'ere said they were good. I couldn't believe IT!
The What 4 are an awful noise too. God, I hate all these Post-Mummies
bands. The Mummies were alright but they have a lot to answer for the
fuck-up they have caused on this so called garage scene.
The Loons are pretty good. I know their cover of 'Stumble And Fall' is
pretty old, so they've changed a a fair bit since. Mike's vocals don't
win me over. The b side is cool though. The LP though I'm sure will be
brilliant from how Mike explained it to me earlier last year.
What's really good and stands out is The Hairy Fairies LP 'Electric
Fairytales'. I remember this band from the Misty Lane comps which they
really shon through on. Typical snotty garage/r'n'b, but plaed a lot
better than all the other wannabes.
In '95 when The Nuthins toured the boot we played with them in their
home, Rimini. They were great, but had totally changed style and were
far more power-pop/Groovies style. Again, they were great.
I didn't even realise they were still going, but yes they are, and
have once again changed direction. This LP is not shit trash garage with
baaad vocals like 99.999% of the 90s scene. Here the band play in a late
60s guitar solo dominated psych/rock style, with gorgeous harmonies and
great songs. Fucking fantastic, but garagers will probably turn their
noses up and call it hippy. Me I love it. I think I'll make one of those
pots with the Mc Kinleys stuff if PJ doesn't want it.
******************************

If anyone is in search of a very, very good 90s psych LP I promise the
'Fairies LP will please yo' no end.

Tell Gianni I sent you, I wanna do him/her a favour after slating nearly

have to say though as the years pass garage/r&b tag is diminishing being
replaced by a much more punk/power-pop sound. Don't expect pure garage.

In January 1996, the Pittsburgh Steelers were heading towards an ultimately
unsuccessful trip to the Super Bowl. Bored over Christmas break, I wrote a
song about the then-Steeler quarterback, Neil O'Donnell, called "I Had A Dream
I Was Neil O'Donnell". The song was written from the viewpoint of a guy who
was obsessed with a girl, who, paid him no heed in turn because she was
obsessed with O'Donnell. He dreams he's O'Donnell, which causes her to notice
him; alas, being O'Donnell means he's married to Mrs. O'Donnell and can't have
the original object of his desire. I wound up the song with my favorite
couplet, which alluded to then backup-quarterback Kordell Stewart: "I was the
one, but still, oh well/tomorrow gonna have to dream I'm Kordell". I then
heard that a talk show on the radio station which broadcast the Steeler games
was looking for people who had written songs or poetry about the team to come
down to the show and perform them. Quickly, I put together a rudimentary
musical backing, taught the parts to two of my siblings, and we went down to
the station and did the song. It was quite a thrill -- the only chance that
this long-time rock fan has had to be on the other side of the microphone.
Unfortunately, O'Donnell threw two costly interceptions in the Super Bowl
loss, quickly left town as a free agent, and, although I sent him a tape of
the performance, never acknowledged my artistic achievement.

I don't need any additional comment to Teppei.
But I remember a couple of years ago Steve Coleman asked about
them on bomplist. At the time most of Japanese didn't know them.
But now they are chart hit band ! here.

I have that one and it's hilarious! Excellent ancedotes of Keith's pranks!

I can't stand Mudhoney. I love the Mount McKinleys! They are brilliant,
creative, fun...I love their ability to mix psych, 60's punk, and ecclectic
weirdness. They certainly aren't for everyone, and I don't think the Max
Piccou LP is anywhere near their best material! Mojo, this is just one of
those bands who doesn't translate as well to vinyl as they do live in
person. They can be absolutely mind-numbingly psychedelic, live.

Anyone catch the UK flick "The Jokers" last night '66? I was wondering if
anyone knew who the band was playing a the party. Freakbeatish group,
credits didn't help at all. They had a sitar, harp and fuzz guitar. Tony

Hey Paul!
I can't remember where exactly that show was but I think it was
somewhere in Camden...or I was in Camden and then took the bus somewhere
else to see them. Sorry, I can't remember! Could've been Finsbury
though...
The show was amazing, do you want pictures from it? I'm sure I could
dig some up!

My turn! I agree with Glynis that the genius of the Mt. McKinleys has
not been properly captured on vinyl. And I think that was the
consensus (at least among those that commented) after their
appearances at FuzzFest and Cave Stomp. I remember more than one
comment about new appreciation for the records after seeing them live,
or some such.

They are one of those bands that are NOT to be missed live, but whose
records do not pack the same whallup as their live show, and are
therefore not for everyone.

I'm with Glynis on both counts. I've never understood the appeal
of Mudhoney (tho' some other garage fans I know love 'em for some reason),
but the Mt. McKinleys blow me away every time. (I was deeply disappointed
that they had to cancel last week's show with the Titanics and the
Fleshtones.) I don't see how they'd sound like Mudhoney to someone, but it
just goes to show how musical tastes influence perceptions. To a dyed in
the wool opera buff, all rock'n'roll might be lumped together.

They certainly aren't for everyone, and I don't think the Max

descriptions would help.

	And stompingly soulful, too.

Whoop dee doo! I can't wait. I've tried to compile my own list of FLA garage
bands with the help of Jeff Lemlich's "Savage Lost," (which mostly focuses
on the Miami area), comps and other resources. Every time I'm in Tampa I go
to flea markets etc and very few record dealers seem to know anything about
these bands.

I was in Jacksonville, Fla over Christmas and asked the owner of Yesterday
and Today records about some north Florida garage bands, since I heard he
had a large singles collection. I mentioned the Monarchs (featured on
Teenage Shutdown) and he told me a member of the Monarchs had contacted him
just a few weeks prior looking for old copies of their singles (he long
since lost any he had). Guess the word is getting around!

Freddie Blassie is clearly the king of the heap as far as I'm
concerned. Trailing far, far behind the King Of Men is Rufus R.
"Freight Train" Jones who cut a 45 in the 1970's titled "Lilacs
Today." Though the design of the label is nothing special (no photo
of Rufus in action) the text is pretty notable as it reads, "Rufus R.
Jones Wrestles With Lilacs Today," which is actually quite accurate!
It's a pretty bad record.....after all, could you possibly imagine a
     *good* record called "Lilacs Today?"

On another note, I finally made it to the fabled Opera House of South
Pittsburgh, Tennessee to paw through their massive stock of used
records. What a cool place. Walked out w/ the truck driving classic
LP "Lookin' At The World Through A Windshield" by Del Reeves and
Porter Wagoner's fantastic "Skid Row Joe" LP as well as a few dozen
country 45's. Big thanks go out to Kip and David for clueing me in to
the place to begin with!! Greg

Thanks for pickin' that up for me, that completely slipped my mind. I
bet there's
a Nelson Briles record molding away in a trift store or two. There's a

LIVE SHOWS

Cavestomp `98
New York,
Coney Island High

Running Order: Mount MeKinleys / Plassticland /
The Heodless Horsemen/The Fuzztones / TheChesterfield
Kings with Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere & The Raiders /
Skky Saxon with the Mysterions

IN A city where Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen albums enjoyed
saturation airploy, New York's short-lived '60s garage rock renaissance,
circa 1983-1986, was an oasis of reol rock'n'roll. The promoters of the
second annual Cavestomp festivol - three nights of '60s vets ond '80s
revivalists at an East Village nightclub - are banking on the nostalgia of
those who remember garage rock's second coming.

As the crowd gathers on the first night, it's clear there are
plenty such survivors, though the openers, the little-known Mount
McKinleys, fail to draw most of these sophisticated NYC patrons inside
before 1 O pm. MC Peter Zaremba of The Fleshtones introduces Plasticland,
the first of the evening's many reunited '80s acts. Plasticland sound like
Pink Floyd would if they had come from the beer capital of America. The
singer has a bleached blond pageboy barnet and attempts to look like
Screaming Lord Sutch. He actually looks more like Jimmy Savile.

Afer a fiery set from re-formed nouveau beatsters The Headless
Horsemen, we're treated to yet another reconstituted act, The Fuzztones,
who in 1989 brushed with stardom via on album produced by Shel Talmy. (In
Heat, on Beggars Banquet, living in o bargain bin near you.) They rehash
their old set passably until their last number, when lead singer Rudi
Protrudi announces o special guest. The newcomer takes the stage ond dives
into the Count Five nugget Psychotic Reaction. It's, erm, Vinnie Mortell
from post-garage noodlers Vanilla Fudge. Perhaps it's time for a trip to
the bar...

Next up are The Chesterfield Kings, one of the most successful
post-'60s garage bands, performing the same excruciatingly loud set they've
been doing for years. While their musicianship remains on the same
primitive level as always, so does their sense of fun, which must be why
they've lasted nearly 20 years. No doubt it appealed to Paul Revere & The
Raiders singer Mark Lindsay, whom the group recently rescued from oldies
hell.

When the Kings' singer Greg Prevost brings on the frighteningly
well-preserved Lindsay, a wall of screams rises from the women in the
crowd, few of them old enough to remember when he was teen-mag dreamboat.
Though the sinewy singer looks a bit more wholesome these days - more a gym
teocher thon a groupie chaser - he still snarls like the best of them on
his originals Louie, Go Home (recorded by The Who ond David Bowie) and Him
Or Me, What's It Gonna-Be?

For those garage perverts willing to stay until afer 3am, the sight
of Sky Saxon backed by the Mysterians (sans Question Mark) is a dubious
pleasure. The biggest surprise is that Saxon is clean-shaven, probably for
the first time in 25 years. Reportedly, he showed up in a chest-length
beard, but lopped it off at the behest of the promoter. Looking a bit tired
ond occosionally disoriented, he performs Seeds favourites for a reverent
crowd, while the Mysterians strain admirably to keep up with his
vacillations.

Finishing with o dragged-out Can't Seem To Make You Mine, Saxon
calls Mark Lindsay on stage to join him for Satisfaction, then changes his
mind and goes into Love Me Tender instead. The moment is surreal, to say
the least. At 4am in front of a '90s audience of '80s fans of the '60s
revival it's Cavestomp's version of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame jam.
Except it's far more primitive, man.
