This slipped my mind on my last post. The Flutie brothers had a band
called Catch This in the mid-80s with another local musician. The enjoyed
moderate success playing the typical college bars like Molly's in Allston and
The Jumbo in Somerville. The best I can describe their music was pub rock,
better than all classic rock covers that you'd hear at the Holiday Inn, but
not totally BOMP!ish either. Doug Flutie plays drums.

Good news for those people outside of Japan that want to get Michelle Gun
Elephant records: they're currently making arrangements for a British
record company to put out their releases in the UK. The boys in the group
have one particular indie punk/garage label in mind, although a certain
major label is also showing interest in them. Whatever label they go with,
there will be UK releases coming out before their next visit in September.

I have to stick up for the Mount McKinleys. First time I saw them live was
at Cavestomp and they were pretty good. There are a lot of bands who are,
for whatever reason, unable to capture the brilliance of their live
performance on reord. They certainly did a hundred times more for me than
Plasticland and the Optic Nerve put together - though I'm sure Mojo would
love them.

Mojo's just getting bored and trying stir up some action. But he can still
give me the vinyl.

Mojo, just save some cash aside cause I'm sure you gonna buy the
forthcoming Max Picou release anyway ! I'm currently working
with Gianni on a Embrooks 7'', the songs are total KILLERS, and
there's gonna be a special package with the record... in fact a zine,
whom the totality will be devoted to Mole, his "history", and all the
bands in which he's been implied so far... interviews, pictures,
comix, complete discography, etc, etc... the whole stuff should
be out sometimes during the spring.
I agree with you, Max Picou rds is a mix of very good (Loons, but
also Mc Kinleys LP, What 4 7'') and less interesting stuff (La Secta,
and Hairy Fairies LP, the last one having bored me after 2 spins), but
Gianni is a total garage-addict, whom tastes are wide... i've interviewed
him for the forthcoming issue of my zine, he told me that Max Picou was
devoted to avoid any specific sound, or imagery. The name of his label
comes even from the name of his cat, 'cause he wanted to avoid the
classic "gravedigger /back from the grave" stuff . So, here's the label:
just the hobbie of a guy, passionated by all the forms garage music can
have, who just want to issue some records by the bands he loves (he's
a big fan of La Secta and Mystreated ), whatever the way they sound.
He'd love to issue some stuff from Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and
from Mr Zero if it was possible, but a Woggles should also be on its way...
kinda label where there's some goodies for everybody.
Anyway, whatever you think, support Max Picou, one of the two garage labels
that are trying to survive in shitty Switzerland, where nobody give a fuck
about
what they're doing (the other one being Voodoo Rhythm rds).

Woolworth in the UK had their own label in the late 50s to mid 60s on which
they released re-recorded versions of top twenty hits. Most were terrible
pop songs but a good few are worth checking out, having future top session
musicians doing the business.

I'm so sorry to hear about this.

I got to meet Hugh on The Muffs/Queers/Cub tour in the summer of '95. I
went five nights in a row (Philly, NYC, New Haven, Providence, and
Boston) and spent a good deal of time hanging out with the various band
members. Of The Queers, I found Hugh (and 2nd guitarist on that tour,
Eric) to be very outgoing, fun people.

I'd read somewhere that he had cancer (and that it was the reason he left
the band), but I'd always hoped it was just a rumor. Sadly, it wasn't.

If he were to give you the Max Piccou vinyl, get a steel reinforced glove;
it's heavy! I wrote the Fuzzfest '98 review some time back and they were
indeed great in concert and not as good on vinyl. The Woggles (whose

Cavestomp! '98
Coney Island High, New York City; November 21-23, 1998
Score: 88

The second annual Cavestomp "garage-rock festacular" exemplified that
peculiarly '90s phenomenon: the revival of a revival. The '60s rock
revival that spawned a garage-rock subculture in the mid-'80s was itself
revived by Cavestomp's promoters, who booked three generations of beat
appreciators, including '60s psych/punk act the Pretty Things,
Reagan-era rebels the Raunch Hands, and upstart fuzz fiends from the
United States (the Conquerors), Japan (the 5,6,7,8's), and Spain (the
Nuggets).
The highlights flew by like a GTO: Seeds singer Sky Saxon backed by the
Mysterians; New York '80s scenemakers the Fuzztones bringing Vanilla
Fudge guitarist Vinnie Martell onstage for the Count Five's "Psychotic
Reaction"; and the Chesterfield Kings, whose pudding-bowl dos shocked
audiences during the Flock of Seagulls era, backing legendary Paul
Revere & the Raiders singer Mark Lindsay. Even without his white tights
and tricornered hat, Lindsay vibrated with the spirit of '67. The
weekend's emotional highlight was a reunion of Boston's Barry and the
Remains, who opened for the Beatles on the Fabs' last tour and are
widely considered the best '60s band that never broke through. Thrilled
to be reunited, they performed so wondrously that the sardine-packed
crowd lowered its typical hipster facade, letting loose a stream of
unabashed emotion. As the group returned for an encore, someone voiced
the crowd's feeling: "F- the Beatles! You guys are better!" -Dawn Eden

I'm from Minneapolis and I remember those Woolworths "box sets" when I
was growing up. You could see one single exposed on the top and then the
rest would be a surprise. I was 10 or 11 at the time, and bought a bunch
of those boxes. In retrospect I wish I could have bought a hundred more
as some of the best 45's in my collection came from those things. At the
time, I had never heard of most of the artists on those 45s but later
came to realize that they included some very rare girl group, surf
instrumental and psychedelica recordings. Also scored a bunch of cool
picture sleeves in these boxes--Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs, Manfred
Mann, the Detergents, and even a Bob Dylan which I believe is quite rare.
I remember once at Woolworths they had a huge table/bin with 100s of old
45s going 10 for a dollar. Even as a kid, I thought picture sleeves were
cool, and found a bunch of records that are still among the best in my
collection. Unfortunately, back in those days, I usually did not have
more than a dollar to my name at any one time, and can't help but think
of the countless treasures I passed by. Years later, as an adult, I
found some great $1.00 albums at Woolworths, including records by Big
Star and ? and the Mysterians. Today, all the Woolworths in Minnesota
have closed down, and the records I used to score for a dime or a dollar
can be found at a downtown collectors store for between $10 and $40.
Some of these boxes have got to be sitting in a warehouse somewhere!
Best wishes, Keith Queensen, Minneapolis

Evan,

That's still pretty odd about that. I've been to it a few times in the past
few days, just to make sure that it's running fine. And from my point,
everything seems to be working fine. With the exception of one picture that
isn't loading, and another picture that turned out really bad (both are my
fault, and I'll fix them). Of course, that little geocities pop-up thing is
kind of annoying, but it's the price you have to pay for a web page there.
Like I said, it could be just a little server conflict. For about 6 months,
my server wouldn't let me onto the Estrus website for some reason, and now
it does, but it gives me all sorts of errors. The best thing I can tell you
is to keep checkin' back. If a bunch of you are having problems, I'll see
if there is a real problem with geocities or something.

Paul will confirm this, that we were lucky enough to witness one of the
most crazed r'n'b bands in search of the benzedrine beat (© The Big Three).
There were only a dozen people in the Boston Arms that night and non of
them were ready for those Japanese guys. Pub Rock gets a bad name these
days, and sometimes on the Bomp List too if one recalls the recent posts
about the Inmates, so it was very refreshing to see those guys climb on the
stage in their skinny black suits, loudly proclaim "We Are Pub Rock Band
From Japan" and then kick the shit out of their instruments. I tell you
folks; Slim, Paul and I were looking at one another and saying "Where the
hell did these guys come from?". In short they made many of our garage
bands in the UK sound like feeble trash. I URGE anyone within spitting
distance of this band to make an extra special effort and check them out.
OK, so they're big stars in Japan now, so big deal, 'cause except for the
Woggles show last November I ain't seen a high energy show like it for some
time. [The Fleshtones excluded bien entendu].

Oh yeah, and if anyone starts taking the mick out of Pub Rock again I'll be
wading in to sort 'em out. One must never, ever, forget the influence
which combos like Dr Feelgood and Eddie & The Hot Rods had on the climb out
of the cesspool which was seventies rock. Next Friday I plan to go to a
bar up the road and see a bunch of old farts (one of which is nearly bald,
gasp!) play a set of Bo Diddley/Son House covers and keep a roomful of
punters damn happy. You may even have heard of these retro pub rocking has
beens... THEE HEADCOATS.

Hi Jeroen
Thanks for your kindness.
I love '60s Dutch bands.
To tell the truth I tried to translate the linernotes of Q65 complete CD
using dictionary, even though I don't know Dutch language at all.
(and I have poor English ability , my language Japanese quite different
from Western one)

Didn't Rizzuto get the grammy for this? I'm dead
serious.

Another "great" moment. Phil Rizzutos play by play
in Paradise by the
Dashboard Light,by Meatloaf. What is really great
is hearing the Scotter
explain his part of the song, how he was unaware
how it was going to be used ,
and his friends and families reaction to the song.

Having seen the Queers at least ten times when Hugh
was drumming, I will have to second that opinion and
express my sorrow for this loss.

The A-side of the new Bristols' 7" is a very familiar tune called "Turn It
On". Can someone tell me who did the original? BTW both sides of the single
(on Damaged Goods) are quite hot.

Hey, I've been helping out with Brian Marshall's Noises From the Garage zine,
I just did a big interview with the Troublemakers and one with Tim White from
the Tiki Men. Anyway, I'll send you a couple copies in exchange for your
cd... and then I'll review it. Plus I'm hoping to get into Old Ironsides
somehow (I'm under age) to see you guys and the Flakes. Anyway, let me know.
And tell me where I can send the zines.
