While we're on a weird dutch-humor related topic, just wanted to know if any
of you have seen the completely hilarious ad from the soesman training
institute? It turned out to be a hoax after all, but I think all of you
should take the painfully long time it takes to download (well, on a 33.6k
modem anyway) and see this piece of marvel. :
http://www.myboot.com/movies/dutch.qt
It really made my mmm month's worth of laughing, and I'm sure you're gonna
get quie a good laugh out of it too.
I'm in no way affiliated with that site, but that guy (myboot.com) has just
got the best laughing material on the net I've seen in my two years of
'netting'.
So if you've got any time to lose...definitely worth it!

Traditional NW surf?????? Like many US rockers of the late50s/early60s,
NW teens were playin a lot of instros but not much surf. Until the Boss
Martians... (great live band!)

The Mystery Action played their first show in Seattle a little over a year
ago with the 5,6,7,8's, The Primate 5, and (alter ego) the Boss Martians.
The M.A. were AMAZING, playing alot of nuggets/pebbles material expertly.
They sounded exactly like the records. I waited a year for them to play
their next show, which was again at Seattle's Crocodile Cafe. COMPLETELY
different material, again competently played. They had become almost a
mod/Small Faces tribute band, performing "All or Nothing" and probably 6 or
7 other Small Faces songs, as well as 2 or 3 by The Jam.
They sounded pretty good, although they tried to sound exactly like the
originals (one could do a lot worse), added nothing to the music, and took
the music nowhere it hadn't been before. Undoubtedly the hardest part of
trying to copy the Small Faces is the vocals. There are not many singers
who can match Ian Maclaghan's husky, soulful pipes. Foster did a
commendable job, but he is no Maclaghan (and who is?). I look forward to
seeing reviews from others.

Don't send them money or credit card details with your order. Tell them the
style and size you require and have them contact you when it's in stock.
When that time eventually arrives, they'll let you know and you then have
the choice of saying "Yes. Here's the money." or "No thanks, I've got 'em

Hi

I am going to ask a big favour of all you Australian power pop fans out
there. I know a few of you are huge fans of DM3. I wrote to Australian
radio station Triple J to ask them why the don't play any Perth power
pop bands like DM3 while they play Great Eastern States bands like
Icecream Hands. The response was that DM3 aren't good enough and don't
write good enough songs!! This pisses me off because bands like DM3,
Chevelles, Jack & The Beanstalk et al are struggling to get any crowds
or reconition here in Perth and are of a similar high standard. They are
more popular overseas. Anyway if you follow the link you can read what I
have written and have your say if you wish.

OK, OK, I'll try and post the translation in the next couple o' days.

Thank you, thank you, you're too kind.
If any of you are intrested I could post translations of articles on the
following; Zipps, Reza & The Firecats, Group $oall and Jenny &
The Rascals. There are a few more but they are temporarely lost in

Neil, Are you sure you it was Amsterdam where you stayed and
not Johanesburg ?. 'cause that sentence reads more like South
African then that it resembles the local lingo here in Holland.

OK, I'm off to see the Reatards and the Persuaders...

It has been four years. I dont get much chance to practice speaking
Dutch in San Francisco. Not that I had really reached the stage of
understanding Amsterdammers anyway.

anyone catch the Diodes one, and only, reunion show in north america on
Open Mike friday night? not really being familiar with their work, would
their new best of cd be worth the cash? i wasn't impressed by their
performance. it wasn't horrid or anything, just kind of lifeless.

someone was asking about the puck rock comps. there is a second one
floating around. it was released on Joey Shithead's (of DOA fame) Sudden
Death Records.

i was thinking of ordering Teenage Shutdown "World Ain't Round, It's
Square" comp. anyone have this? what is it like? raw punky-garage? some
of the other Teenage Shutdown seem kinda whimpy by the descriptions on
Crypt's site.

speaking of ordering, does anyone use Midhaven Mailorder? are they
reliable? they seem to have good prices and very reasonable shipping costs
(unlike most mailorders).

This is one of the reasons I try and give people who write for me as free a
hand as possible. I do what little I can to clean up spelling and grammar
(tho' I'm far from an expert... obviously!), but prefer to let writers
have a free hand. On occasion, this has meant musicians have been a bit
upset with me because they believed a writer left a bad image of them in
the eyes of the readers. Luckily, these have also been people I've gotten
to know pretty well over the years and they've understood that I like to be
pretty hands-off when it comes to letting writers have their say... Being
artists themselves, that's something they can appreciate.

Having said I usually have a hands-off policy, I should also note that I
refuse to publish anything that *I* don't want to read. I may not like the
way someone came off in an interview or article that's been submitted to
me, but that's OK; but I will absolutely NOT allow someone to use my
publication as a forum for his/her hatred and prejudice.

I should also note that I have no problem with magazines that have a
viewpoint that they want to get across. They're the ones running that
particular show, so they have the right to shape it as they please. If a
writer doesn't like that policy, s/he must choose between the pros of being
published by that publication (money, exposure, etc.) and the cons
(butchering of a piece of writing, stifling of expression). As it stands,
most of us in this world must work for a living. As a result, that
sometimes means we have to suffer the consequences.

Doris Troy - of course!! Guess I'm no threat to Glenn A. Baker! On a related
note, I find the Zombies to be the most successful (i.e. best) '60s
whiteboys at soul covers - what do other readers think?

I was scouring through some guys $1.00 bin at a
record show today and ran across this Capitol 45 from
1973 by The Kingsmen called "You Better Do Right."
The song itself is a decent 70s rocker that kind of
reminds me of The Raspberries in a way. The question
that came immediately to my mind was, "Is this the
same Kingsmen who recorded "Louie, Louie," "Annie
Fanny," "The Jolly Green Giant" and all those?"
Well, is it? Anyone out there know? Just thought
I'd ask.

P.S. 3 other cool 45s I found were The Ventures:
"2000 Pound Bee, Pts. 1 and 2" (one of the most
rockin' songs the Ventures ever did, at least to my
ears), The Other Side's "I Wanna Be There" (great
organ pounder)/"Lawdy Miss Clawdy" and The Sidekicks'
"Fifi The Flea"/"Not Now." ("Fifi's" a sad tale of a
circus flea's unrequited love, but "Not Now's" a real
nice pop rocker with a great fuzz guitar break toward
the middle).

For those who care.....

"Noises from the Garage" has, as of January 11, has
moved. The new address is as follows:

Noises from the Garage
Brian Marshall
11 N. Main St.
Indianapolis, IN 46227

If any of you have ordered copies and have not
received them yet, please get in touch with me as
soon as possible. Things have been hectic around
here, as I've also had to deal with a flood in my
basement that did damage to a good portion of my
record collection. (Don't worry. It's mostly the
covers that have been damaged. A couple of the ones
I've played so far have been okay.) Bear with me as
I make this transition.

And watch for "Noises from the Garage" #9 late
February-early March with Andre Williams, Deke
Dickerson, The Makers, Pootinany, The Swingin'
Neckbreakers, The Fleshtones, The Accel 4, The
Plungers, The InSect, Mondo Topless and a whole bunch
more stuff.

Just thought I'd let you know.

I'd be VERY interested in reading translations of articles on these groups.
Who where Reza & The Firecats? I LOVE Jenny & The Rascals. Do
you know more of their recorded output other than "Stengun"?

I think that is the guy that wrote the Brian Jones book 'Who Killed
Christopher Robin'. I thought that this book was definitely more objective
than the one called 'Golden Stone' by that old fan. Why do you say he is a
crank?.

Glynis, would that be the same "Stengun" that Linda van Dyke sang w/Boo&
the Boo boos? :) Tony

I do have a question though, is Reza & the Firecats any connection to Group
Reza?

I know this could step on a few toes but, what you have written is so true,
I couldn't agree with you more. Mainstream Aussies are so deluded by brit
pop and grunge or the like, poor souls that they cant see the wood for the
trees. We have always had such fantastic talent in Australia but we fail to
recognise it in our frantic struggle to procure those overpublicised
overseas bands. And why, simply because the radio stations tell us to buy
buy buy from HMV. The first band I ever saw was the Go-Starts in Perth at
the Wizbah (Dom Mariani's first band before the Stems) and I still think
they shit on most 80's power-pop worldwide. Un-publicised Aussie bands
throughout the ages, well there is the Stems (huge in Europe but practically
unknown here except on Bomplist perhaps) the Marigolds, The Scientists, The
Lincons, The Bamboos, The Swamp Monsters, Neptunes, Hekawis, Crusaders,
Exotics, Intoxica, Sunnyboys etc etc.

As for DM3 - they rule the school. Whoever said to you that they dont write
good songs doesn't deserve their fuckin' ears and I'd sure like to know how
the dumb ass shit got to have a radio show. Then again that person is
probably a Silverchair or Whitlams fan and has a way smaller record
collection than most of the people on this list (and if they dont well,
heck! at least we buy our with hard earned lurcre!!). What I wanna know is
why cant mainstream Australian radio dj's stop carrying on about wanky
musicianship (Yawn) and start appreciating energy and honesty instead. Why
do Aussie bands get more bloody airplay in Europe and the States than in
their own country???. All I can say is thank god for the small mercy of
independent radio stations.
