There was a neo-rockabilly group in the UK back in the '80s called The Blue
Cats. Don't know if they're the same ones because I don't recognise the
song titles you mentioned.

This group started in about 1978 or '79 as The Southern Rocking Boys (or
something like that) and had a 45 on a label called Red Hot, then they
became the Blue Cat Trio and then the Blue Cats. Can't remember the title
of the Blue Cat Trio album but I seem to remember it having heavy Gene
Vincent influences as well as covering some Billy Haley type stuff as well.
The Blue Cats' album was called Wild Night and there was a 45 off it as
well. The Blue Cat's were more new wave rockabilly whereas the Blue Cat
Trio were more authentic sounding but were the same people.

These are records I've not thought about let alone played in years and
years, but I'll dig 'em out later and have a look.

That depends on what covers you are referring to. Frankly, I think they're
takes on "Road Runner," "Sticks And Stones" and "Got My Mojo Working" were
pretty sloppy, at least vocally. Colin Blunstone's voice, at least in the
early days, seems unsuited for the upbeat R&B styles. However, "Summertime"
and "You've Really Got A Hold On Me/Bring It On Home To Me" are a lot
better. But bar none, "Can't Nobody Love You," the old Solomon Burke song,
is probably the best soul _cover_ they did. Many of their originals had a
very good blue-eyed soul sound, especially tracks like "Is This The Dream"
and "Gotta Get Ahold Of Myself."

There are some really good soul/R&B covers on the fourth disc of the
"Zombie Heaven" box, the BBC sessions. "Early One Morning," "Soulville,"
"It's Alright," "When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through Her Eyes,"
"Sittin' In The Park," "You Must Believe Me," "This Old Heart Of Mine." Not
to mention their soul/jazz hybrid version of "Rip It Up." So different from
any other version of the song.

When it comes to blue-eyed soul in Britain, I'd be more likely to nominate
the Action, Cliff Bennett, the Paramounts. American? How about the
Buckinghams? Say what you want about prototypical "horn-rock," these guys
had the sound down pat, along with fellow Chicagoans, the American Breed.
For the most part though, I don't think too many so-called "blue-eyed soul"
bands really were authentic-sounding enough...

I got it this weekend and was listening to it just this morning but I can
only remember the names of some the most well known bands on it: Johnny
Diaz and the Checkmates ("She's So Fine"; also on Exploiting Plastic
Inevitable vol.1 as well as on Drink Beer, Yell, Dance - yes, the American
frat comp!), Mod East, Downbeats (on DFG 6). and a more obscure one, Feel
Free. But there are also several other very good tracks in a similar vein
by bands from this region that had not been reissued so far. This is
probably the best volume in the Project Blue series and the sound, in
contrast to previous volumes, is not bad. Definitely worth checking it
out!

There are, I think, 4 Teddy and the Playboys songs on this volume
of Project Blue and they are some of the best on this record! The one
that impressed me the most was called "Magic Colors" from what I remember.
Great psych influenced song! So perhaps the CD you saw has some more good
stuff.
And what about all the uncompiled Taiwanese 60's treasures?

No reissue so far Tony. Their '67 LP is nice but the real cool one is
the '68. It includes one great original that was included in Oil Stains

I am guessing that this ep might be a reissue of the Michigan Plague, who
had (I believe) 3 45s. Their monster was on Fenton, "I've Been Through It
Before"/"Tears From My Eyes" (I'm guessing on the latter title...). I
know I saw a boot ep of their stuff a few years back. I don't think
anything on it was as good as "I've Been Through It Before" (comped on The

I've got the vinyl copy of Wavy Gravy - you're not missing anything
in terms of linear notes on the CD. In fact, I think you get quite a
few extra tracks on the CD version. As far as I know, there's 3 or 4

I disagree. I think Stevie Winwood was much more soulful. (Bear in
mind that I'm not knocking Paul Jones, but stating that I prefer Mr.
Winwood.) Although, I cannot cofirm that his eyes are indeed blue.

My fave British vocalist remains Phil May, however...

OK, here it is (in part). The original text is kinda dry, but I tried to
stay as close to it as possible. And yes, there may be some typos
here.

===============================================
The Hague is often seen as "the Liverpool" of Holland, a
comparison that certainl rings true. In the late 50s and early 60s
the city already had a vibrant music scene. A large number of
"Indo-Rock" bands (socalled 'cause most of these bands were
formed by Indonisian emigrants), like the Tielman Brothers,
Rhythm Stars and the Hot Jumpers, playing a mixture of rock'n'roll
and Shadows like instrumentals, enjoyed considerable popularity.
A large number of these bands played in and around the city to a
full house every weekend in places like the Marathon, the Drie
Stoepen, the Eekhoorn and the Houtrustrotonde.
Inspired by the succes of the "Indo-Rock" bands the local youth
stated forming their own bands. First among those were Pee White
& The Magic Strangers and the Ricochets (the later included both
Rudie Bennett and Robie Van Leeuwen).
An important factor in this local scene was the Verhaas music
store. Like no other they helped out starting musicians and gave
advise on what equipment to buy. The shop was also important as
a meeting point and as a place to get in touch with other
musicians. Another reason for them to stop by the shop was that
Verhaas was always the first to have new models of instuments
and equipment for sale.

After playing in a "city-blues" band named Leadbelly's LTD, Peter
Vink (bass) and Jay Baar (drums) joined Wim Bieler (vocals),
Frank Nuysens (guitar) and Joop Roelofs (guitar) for what would
become the legendary Q 65. By now it was Febr. '65 and the band
(still without a name) started rehearsing, finding their inspiration in
traditional R & B and songs by ao Robert Johnson and Willie
Dixon. They also started writing their own material that was co-
written by Wim, Fank and Jay. By April they had made enough
progression to start doing gigs. The name Q 65 was chosen as
their name, but there was little meaning behind the name, Q,
because it looked good, and 65 because that was the year they
started.
The first Q 65 gig was at the UTS in Scheveningen. The band got
payed DFL 10.=, and that was 10 guilders less then it cost them to
get there.
A manager was needed and found in the person of Joop Roelofs.
The band started earning more and more money, and by June '65
they got HFL 150.= a night.
Shows by Q 65 were always special. Singer Wim Bieler rollend
around on stage and the band played extremly loud. That and their
provocative atitude and image got the labeled as the "Dutch Pretty
Things". And even though sometimes equipment wouldn't work or
guitars were out of tune, the fans couldn't care less, "the Kjoe is
kick" they said and painted the band's name on every wall in the
Hague and it's far suroundings (some of wich is still visible to this
day).
In November '65 was playing the Eekhoorn and it was there that
they came in contact with the young producer Peter Koelewijn who
invited them for an audition in the Decca studios. A month later the
band recorded two songs with Koelewijn; "You're The Victor" and
"And Your Kind". Listening to the playback, everbody involved was
so exited about the results that it was decited to release these
songs as they were.
"You're The Victor" was chosen as the A-side, a dirty ramshackle
blues song, sung in a barly decipherable accent by Bieler. The
single entered the national top 40 on March 5 1966 and it stayed
there for 13 weeks, with 11 as it's highest position, a fine debut !.
With a hit on their hands they started getting so many gigs that
they needed a new full-time manager, and Roelofs was replaced by
Wout Van Soest. The band also changed producers at the time
and Hans Van Hemert took over the job from Koelewijn. On
Thursday May the 5th, the band recorded "The Life I Live" and "Cry
In The Night", the recording session took place in the midle of the
night.
Decca came up with the idea that as a promotional stunt the band
would sail across the North-Sea, from Scheveningen to London, on
a rubber raft. That some member of the Q couldn't swim was an
adventitious circumstance, the company found out about much
later.
On June 3 '66, the member of the Q got on board of the raft and set
sail for the UK, for safety reasons they were followed by a larger
ship "De Zilvermeeuw". They reached a former radar post that was
now in use by pirate radiostation "Radio City" and did a live on-air
interview. The planned London gig, at the "Tiles" club, however gor
cancelled, because no one had bothered to get working permits for
the band. They did however did some interviews and foto sessions,
so for the next couple of days the band got articles in various
British magazines and newspapers. The journey back home was
again made on the raft, but as weather was too rough, they had to
get on board of "De Zilvermeeuw" for a while, but with the Dutch
coast in sight the band again got in their rubber raft and upon their
arrival in Scheveningen they were greeted by some 30000 fans who
were so exited that the band literarly had to run for their lives after
setting foot ashore.
The band also did a gig right there on the beach, and it was filmed
by both national tv and a movie journal. Other radio and tv stations
made mention of this Q-happening as well. Obviously all this was
good publicity, "The Life I Live" became a tp 10 hit and they got to
perform on what was then Hollands best rated tv show "De Vuist".
(the host of this show, Willem Duys, was also owner of the Relax
label, best known for the Outsiders,- J.V.).
The Kjoe, as they were known by their fans, were now full-time
pros. And besides a good manager also had a fanclub with several
100 members.
The band returned to the studio in the summer of '66, this time to
record a full album. Besides some covers, Otis Redding's "Mr.
Pitifull", Willie Dixon's "Spoonfull" and a 14 minute version of "Bring
It On Home", there were 6 originals like the Bo Diddley-ish "I Got
Nightmares", "Summer Thoughts" and "Sour Wine". On that last
song Jay played the harmonium while seated on Vink's back who
played the foot pedals, doin' both at the same time had turned out
too complicated for him.
Obviously "The Life I Live" was also featured on the lp, which had
"Lava" as it's working title, but the final choise was "Revolution", a
fitting choise for such a revolutionary album, price was HFL 9,99 !.
The sleeve was a real eye-catcher. Graphic designer Benno
Peterson had put the boys in a scene from the American civil war.
The lp was premiered on Saterday Sptember 10 in a tv show about
singer/songwriter Boudewijn De Groot. The Q were featured as
geusts and played live both "I'm A Man" and a long version of
"Spoonfull". The lp sold more then well, and in their hometown even
reached the singles chart where it's main competion was the
band's own "I Despise You"/"Ann" 45 (Oct '66).
================================================

OK, I haven't got the time to do the entire thing right now, but I'll
hope to get to it before the end of the week (but it might take a little
longer if Michal keeps on makin' fun of the Dutch soccer team !!!.).

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) _ Davy Jones is as much into horses as  Monkees
these days.
``I ride all the time, of course,'' says the 5-foot-4-inch
singer who made his mark in the '60s group The Monkees.
``But  today, I'm more interested in developing horses and sharing that
sort of thing with others.''
Now 53, Jones said he once wanted to be a jockey.
Jones performs about 200 dates a year.
He's scheduled to appear  with Peter Noone of Herman's
Hermits and '60s heartthrob Bobby  Sherman on the Teen Idols Tour this
summer.
``I'm my own man when I tour,'' he says. ``I sing some Monkees  songs. I
sing some originals.*''

*Editors note - and I bet those orginals are every bit as brilliant as
those on his debut!

<<Terry Rawlings has written:
Quite Naturally: The Small Faces>>

Rawlings also wrote a booklet about the Small Faces for Riot Stories Ltd
(Weller's publishing company in the early 80's) called 'All Our
Yesterdays'. It is quite nicely illustrated, offers a good overview of the
band and contains a page of quotes from various 60's music journals. For
instance one of the boys is quoted as saying to Disc and Music Echo: "When
I'm a 62 I'll probably be a tramp and dig it." Sadly, that's an ambition
that ain't gonna be fulfilled for two of them.

Riot Stories also published around 1980-81 three issues of a
poetry/music/art 'zine called 'December Child'. Unfortunately I loaned
No's 1 & 2 out many years ago and that was then end of them. Issue 2 is
still here though and contains stuff on John's Children, George Orwell and
a few poems penned by Weller. Me thinks Joe Bonomo would have fun looking
at this stuff. ;-)

Thx for checking. I've been able to locate their CDs thru GEMM.com.(they're
very hard to get if you're in the US) This is one great '80s RaB act...
