Does anyone know what happened to Stewart after that side and the cover of
"Shake"? He sounded like he could have had a future. :^)

Anybody who has this comp, could you please mention some of the band
names. I saw a BMG cd comp of Hong Kong 60's and 70's pop. Judging by the 45

covers pictured, band names and song titles, some of it looked pretty
cool, garagey in that GS kinda way and even included some garage
cover staples. The only band name that I recall off the top of my head
was Teddy and The Playboys (I think). In anycase, all the artists were
Chinese. I'm assuming that most of the good beat stuff out of Hong Kong
at that time, like stuff on Diggin For Gold and Project Blue were
ex-pats, but maybe there are a few gems on there. Anyone got any clues?

Don't have the Project Blue LP handy, but I listened to it twice a few
nights back and would unreservedly recommend it!

Yeah - how about it, someone??! And what a bummer that mainland China didn't
have a sixties pop scene, thanks to Mao. We'd be up to volume 400 of Chinese
Pebbles by now if they had!!
I did hear recently that Beirut had a swingin' sixties scene from a Lebanese
buddy, but I wonder if any of the records survived the conflict.
However, Tony S. informs me that there's some kool stuff outta Turkey!!

Yes, Steve, indeed I might! Based on his lyrics and the snippets of
poems found throughout the records, they might be an interesting read.

Though does anyone agree with me that Weller's lyrics grew a bit
tiresome during the Jam's final years? A bit like reading a Socialist
text book--and who needs agenda rhetoric in poetry?

After 50 minutes of interminable bad jokes and a seemingly endless game
show segment, The Conquerors were introduced. Keith Patterson got off a
couple witty lines that had me laughing out loud, especially when the host
asked Willy Wisely to introduce the band. "Hey, it's MY band... the bass
player!" you heard Keith yell off mike. Anyway, they're just ending the
first of three songs when there's an abrupt break -- station
identification. "Oh Christ," I think -- it's 11 a.m. straight up! After the
station I.D. we hear about 15-20 seconds of some goddawful canned string
music -- I'm tapping my foot, let's GO already -- and when the feed from
the studio returns it appears they've already started the next song. It was
like that. You know, they sounded great, but straddling the mandated
on-the-hour I.D. knocked the hell out of the taping possibilities!

Well at least someone aint towing the party line, so to speak. Hell if MMM
or 'the Fox' in Melbourne had it there way we would all have little red
books and be reciting Barnsy and Farnsy lyrics before supper each nite.
Did anyone from Oz watch that 'Australian 60's' tv special on before Xmas.
God it was a load of shit, they didn't even put the Master's Apprentices on
or even the Easybeats, all I can remember is Olivia Newton John and Farnsy
and certain moronic 'music critic' we all know very well crapping on about
how semial these two were. Excuse me but did this guy like totally forget
the days when he was 'Mr Nobody' and beggin to get into Opus niteclub and
the Thumpin Thum, and bands like the Moods were getting in before him. I
cant even say he is a sellout cos he was a 5 minute fashion man even then.
Of course should any of the Gestapo be reading this - this is just my
opinion and nothing more!.

I read somewhere once that Kurosawa almost "disowned" Mifune for
appearing in that.

HI,

I beg to disagree, I think Zombies' biggest assets were their songs and vocals on the more fragile and "sensitive" pop-stuff, their soul and r&b covers sound rather timid to me.
As far as brits and irishmen go, my vote goes out for Them. "Turn on your love light"
"Could you, would you" have real soul ring in them in my opinion at least.
But in many ways I think the best white soul cover bands were the lesser known
american regional bands esp. from Louisiana-Texas area and I don't mean garage bands here but The Boogie Kings,Uniques,
Roy Head &The Traits, Joey Long, Clint West etc etc Ofcourse these bands were mixing soul with tons of different influnces, but they had really solid roots playing black music with professional sounding yet energetic big line ups, real arrangements, and most importantly with convincing and soulful vocals. I think certain slickness is necessary
in soul , and very few british bands had that in mid sixties. There are exceptions of course, but this is how I feel about this topic.
