Booking 60s mod/garage bands at the Dirty Water Club means that the dealers
in "vintage" clothing who are in bands are very happy to look after my
needs. Apart from receiving a phone call when a particularly nice
suit/shirt/footwear in my size comes in to the shop, I also get a pretty
good discount... Original 60s desert boots for £5 anyone? - PJ

Surely the 60's garage/punk scene in Australia and New Zealand would
have to be one of the least documented of any music scene from any era.
I have heard quite a few songs by people like The Missing Links, Ray
Colombus and the Wild Cherry's, all I think from Ugly Things CD but
thats about it not including Easybeats, Masters Apprentices, Loved Ones
and Atlantics. I get the impression that there were quite a few great
Australian garage bands but nothing has really been in the reissue
department, especially in comparison to America. (Are you reading this
Greg?) It's about time someone in Australia starting doing proper
reissues that are quite easy to find and are not one off limited
reissues. (perhaps this has been done I haven't heard of anything. I
have heard of Canetoad records though but know nothing about them.) And
it's just not 60's bands. There are many 70's punk bands that deserve
proper reissuing. Just compare the Saints albums with Radio Birdman for
one example.

Seriously, my question is, did the Edsel e.p. "These Birds Are

         Reply to: RE: clothing theories
A friend of mine (a textile artist, no less) had an interesting theory
about the small size of vintage wear. He said that the vintage clothes that
lasted in good shape over the years tended to be things bought for kids
and teenagers, and were rarely worn before being outgrown. Whereas the suits
bought by adults were worn often enough to get beat up. I like your
theory, too. I'm sure the 'normal' sizes go through several loving owners, and
disappear from stores more quickly as well as getting worn out more
quickly. The "people were smaller" theory seems to be a little bit of a stretch.
I know that people are several inches taller, in general, than they were
a few hundred years ago - I just doubt that the average could have
increased by more than an inch in the past 30 years. I'm sure my dad would have
just as much trouble finding a vintage suit that fits as I do - and I know
he was wearing them in the 60's.

Anybody else have the chance yet to pick up the new Bacchus Archive's CD release
by the Hydraulic Raisins? The Raisins were an unknown California garage band in
the '60's and Bacchus has released a CD containing a handful of their
songs, as well as some surf instrumentals by earlier incarnations of the group
(The Rhythm Surfers and the Spectrums).
Included, by the Raisins, are songs ranging from Folk ("The End") to garage ("I
Don't Need You No More", a 1967 cover of the Rumbler's tune with some SERIOUS
attitude) to Barry McGuire copies ("Smog Song", very similar to "Eve Of
Destruction"
with vocals delivered in the same vein). All in all...not bad. I'd recommend
it.

Agree with that... worth more than a spin ('tho the real interest of the
record is more in the The Rhythm Surfers /the Spectrums great tracks than
the weak Raisins titles...rather boring songs).

Well, for any of you guys that are actually going to be coming to
Toronto this weekend (for whatever reason, but there are those shows I
was telling you about!) if you're on the road between 2:30 and 5:00 pm,
turn your radio dial to CKLN, 88.1. Your's truly has been asked to
guest co-host the show that happens then, and it promises to be an
either really amusing or totally disasterous experience (though that
would be hilarious too!). Unfortunately (or fortunately, I haven't
decided yet), the station isn't hooked up to the internet so you can
only hear the show if you're in the area.
Bye for now,

puttinng the two glorious Creatures Singles on one seven inch. Their "One

and amazing production.

Cantetoad's Atlantics JRA/Ramrod sessions (with Johnny Rebb) CD is
toppermost. "LIght Shades of Dark"....wow.

Anyone know if classic Aboriginal rocker Vicki Simms will ever re-release
his single and rumoured unreleased stuff?? Not to mention the fab "Live at

The two preeminent punks bands to come out of Boston in the '60s,
the Remains and the Lost, are making plans to share a bill at Avalon on
March 20. This will be the first local show for either band since a
brief Remains reunion in the '70s. Fronted by latter-day country artist
Barry Tashian, the Remains made the classic single "Don't Look Back" and
opened for the Beatles at Shea Stadium in 1965; Tashian has lately
revived the group for a couple of recent New York shows. Willie

Being from Wisconsin originally (the most obese state in the nation!) and
being a bigger person, I've found the best thrift store stuff in
Wisconsin & Minnesota. Not in the larger cities, but in podunk towns! I've
found lots of great shirts and old man shorts in larger sizes for spare

out there: I'm trying to get some information on the following artists:

 1. The Quik (3 U.K. singles on Deram, 1967)

 2. Colette & The Bandits (1965 single "Fuzz Guitar," on Stateside)

 3. Major Rowley ("There's A Riot," on Stateside)

If anyone out there actually OWNS any of these singles, OR if anyone even
has COPIES of ANY of these songs, could you please PLEASE get in touch
with me?

Thanks in advance,

Scott

I have this 45 (came out in the US on a Bell/Mala/Amy label, forget which
one). It's a CLASSIC cover with the vocalist affecting a (real?)
upper-class British accent. Don't know a thing about the artist, though.

  It was Pebbles 21.

Close enough for government work.

Well, I got the Pretty Ugly CD a few months ago from either Bomp or
Midnight mail-order. It's Volume #2 of the Devil's Children rare Aussie
series and I don't think it duplicates anything on Ugly Things (CD or
vinyl). The sound is not always the best, but still a pretty solid comp.
No. 8 Wire and Devil's Children are/were also in the Midnight catalogue.
If I'm not mistaken you can reach these places on-line through:

Midnight Records
P.O. Box 390
Old Chelsea Station
New York, N.Y.
10011 USA
not sure of the URL, but they're on-line). Beware...possible high prices.

Bomp Records (better prices than Midnight, but no credit card orders)
P.O. Box 7112
Burbank, California
91510 USA
www.Bomp.com or e-mail Suzy Shaw for help at Suzybomp@aol.com

Hope ya can still find what ya want.

Rocky.

Okay, thanx to Kip, Alex and Freddie for solving the original appearance
mystery, but now I'm convinced this is another version I'm thinkin' 'bout.
I don't have Pebbles #21 and I'm pretty sure this ain't on either Essential
Pebbles CD (although it should be!) "Children of Nuggets" lists a band
called Bob Vidone & the Rhymen Rockers as doing a version on "Scum of the
Earth Part 2", but I don't have that either. Still I'm sure this is on a
CD or piece of vinyl somewhere in my collection. So more help please!
This could be a modern garage band with extremely good taste in covers!
If I figure it out before y'all, I'll report that the self-torture is over.
Dontcha just hate when this happens?

Rocky.

I've heard that Mike Sin is looking for those "hairy women" fanzines, but
everyone on the list should send him an e-mail and make sure.
