I don't know if I'm with you on "Clambake", Glynis - I consider it pretty
far along in Elvis's "Baroque" phase (i.e. shitty) - but you and Deena are
both Candy Johnson fans like me! For those who don't know her, Candy's
the not-quite-so-glam but darn peppy one with the blonde
bubble do and usually a fringed outfit who gets at LEAST one feature
spot in 'most any AIP movie. She's great...BUT the problem remains to

I'm thinking that with the American community there based around the Canal

That statement may not be as funny as intended. The Colonel turned down
the Streisand remake "A Star is Born"! I can see that conversation now,
"Son, I got "Live a Little, Love a Little" signed for ya! America wants to
see you in your jammies, singing next to people dressed as a dog and a cat!"

I actually have not seen a complete Elvis movie. There are bits that I
have seen, but never a whole one. Mom liked the theme to "Flaming Star",
which starred the woman that my mother was named after, Elvis Pre...I MEAN,
Dolores Del Rio.

Which is the movie that Elvis' mother is in? She is in the audience.

It might have been. His career has been fraught with disaster, documented in
his amazing best selling British book: Cor Baby, That's Really Me. You won't

Anyone out there remember 7-11 Is God by Pillsburry Hardcore?
Anyway, there's a great Italian Restaurant up the road that lets you run
next door to the 7-11 and bring back beer or wine, no corkage fee! For
the most part, though, your answer to less-than-$4 beers in LA is sadly
correct.

Reserve me an issue. Curious that the mag would be cheaper over seas
than in England. Maybe someone can explain where to go to make
International Money Orders. Plus some of us will need more precise
mailing info.

I think the magazine is 3.50 ukp regardless of location; the
postage/shipping is 1 ukp within the UK, 1.50 to Europe, and 2.50 to the
US, etc. So the total cost to the US would be 6 pounds.

>If its intended to be different shouldnt they have changed the name

The CD is an expanded version of the original vinyl album. It was felt that
a straight reissue of the 16 track LP wouldn't have been as good value as
the 30 track CD we came up with. A different name would have been deceptive,
because it is BASED on the LP - AND it's intended as a tribute to the late
Dean Mittelhauser (Dean's widow, Sue, was paid a licencing fee for allowing
us to put it out, and she thought it was a nice idea). Incidentally, all
members of the bands we've been able to locate have received several free
copies of the CD.
As for the different cover; well there has been some controversy about that,
but it seemed like a reasonable idea at the time.

the cover. The track listing didn't seem too hot to me, though...not
enough of a variety of bands.

I don't know how this got started and what the Fugs had to do with Garage
Punk Unknowns but they were pretty punk (especially if you DON"T like
them, cuz I don't think they cared at the time). I never really thought of
them as hippy so much as just, well if you wanna give 'em a label I'd say
throw them in with label mates The Godz as "da-da" punk/rock/noise.
Anyway, I Tuli Kupferberg and crew were always more dirctly associated
with the beat scene then any "hippie" movement, and I think alot more
subversive. They certainly did a pretty good job of mocking society as
opposed to say Country Joe and the Fish. Remember, you have to put them
in context. That was 65, this is 99.

I've got both of 'em (they came as review copies)... There's no purple
gorilla on either of mine, though. Rather, The Beach Party one has a wooden
sign on the stand with an arrow pointing to actress/model Kari Wuhrer
(blonde in this pic) posing on a scooter in a 60s bathing suit and a
painted on muscle surfer guy by her side. The Pool Party disc has Kari
again (this time as a brunette) poolside, with a retro-futuristic turntable
playing a 45, with a retro-futuristic TV screen showing letters pointing
her way saying "Twist & Swim With Kari Wuhrer."

I think there's also a Jungle Party disc in the series, but I don't have
it.

I haven't listened too intently to either disc yet, though I've played them
as background music to let them have a little time on the charcoal grill of
my brain before I serve up the reviews. Basically, they're eminently
listenable and should make for good background music for your next party.
On the other hand, I wouldn't say either one is an absolute must. (At
least, not at this stage. Maybe with more listening time.) They're good,
not great. You can find out more about the discs by going to
http://www.del-fi.com

On the other hand, if you're looking for a really *excellent* release from
Del-Fi, check out the Larry Bright comp, Shake That Thing!

"The Blues Project" anthology on Polydor , off the masters
