A couple questions:
1) Is this based on Joe's Rock'n'Roll Survey - 1980s book that came out
around '91 or so?
2) Will these all be archived?
3) Do you know if Joe is planning a sequel to the 1980s book for the '90s?
I'd be happy to help him get the info together if he is.

As Pete knows, I'm exactly the OPPOSITE! I go for live shows over record
shows every time. There wouldn't even be a question in my mind. I
absolutely love records... but to me, a live show is the essence of
rock'n'roll.

My girlfriend picked up this CD last year, and it really is superb! I

I suppose any band that recorded a tune named "The Flute Song" kinda worries me.

Perhaps there's a connection here, then again, perhaps not.

On the forthcoming Fleshtones album ('Hitsbsurg Revisited') there is a
slinky sax instrumental called 'Keeley's Twist'. Anyone know if this tune
has anything to do with the Rat Pack femme? Furthermore who recorded it
originally? The reason I ask is that the album closes with a cover of 'I
Am Over 25 (But You Can Trust Me) by Sammy Davies Jnr and the *possible*
connection is leading me to put 2 + 2 together and end up with five. :-(

Talking fo thee Hall of Fame. New material will be added over the weekend
and will include a 35 minute Real Audio file recorded on The Hexbreaker
Tour (London 1983 - intro by Bill Tupper). If you would like to receive

Oh yeah, a review of 'Hitsburg Revisited' (release date April 23) will

No, it's *worse*. It's called "Flute Thing". I find the BP's "sensitive"
songs as pretentious as any of the time. I guess "Flute Thing" was touted
as "jazz" of a sort. You want to stick to "Wake Me, Shake Me", "I Can't
Keep From Crying" and such. Ballads are not their forte, IMO.
So, earlier is probably better, generally.

yesterday, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why Kari Wuhrer was

By the way, Preston Epps completists will want to pick up all three of

Jive contains Bongo Twist, and Del-Fi Pool Party has Watusi Bongos.

As a die-hard record nut, I still would vote for the Remains/Lost... the
record show might be a once a year deal, but that pairing is close to once
in a Lifetime. Having seen the Remains at Cavestomp, I am willing to bet
that you will not miss the records once you've experienced their show
(though luckily Cavestomp coincided with the WFMU record swap, so I got to
do both Remains and 45s, at the cost of some sleep). I'm still
considering going to Boston to see 'em again! It should be incredible to
see them on their home turf after a 32 year absence.

No, just a photo. Other interviews include Marc Lawrence ('30s-'90s
B-gangster movie actor), Cornel Wilde, and Jesus Franco (on his work with
Orson Welles). Plus tons and tons of movie reviews and other stuff.

I think it's about $5 an issue now. Well worth subscribing to!
(I do the proofreading - what I can get before it hits deadline, which is
not always the whole zine, thus Cornel Wilde's name being misspelled on
the cover, and Marc Lawrence's great interview being published in rough

I too would vote for the show, as opposed the records. I figure if I was
destined to find ____ 's record, it will be there when I go. Has it really
been that long for a Remains show in Boston? They did regroup in '77 and I

Good luck! Those are without a doubt some of the most difficult lyrics to
decipher. All I have ever been able to make out from that tune were the
words "Long Hair" and "Gonna Light the Fire" and of course the chant of
"Slave Time". But the beauty of covering material like this is you don't
really need to know the lyrics. Just mushmouth the same sounding nonesense

the final chorus are much louder. Is this one of those 1960s

yeah, the audience is from the live lp(Old Nuggets). The 45 version doesn't
have the applause and is a different recording(New Nuggets CD). Tony
Their 45's are in most cases the Ace version of the two.
I can't keep from crying blows away the lp version.
Back door man is amazing on the lp, but the 45 version gets my vote. A bit
more insane... Tony

I have this set "Blues Project Anthology" as well, and as someone has
already filled in the details on this already, that just leaves me with the
comment that this disc has a different version of "Wake Me Shake Me" than
appeared on the Rhino LP/CD "Best Of The Blues Project." Can anyone fill me
in on this?

I think the Cafe Au Go Go stuff on disc one is by far the best material on
the set. Really backs up the "Blues" in "Blues Project." It's also
interesting to hear the transition between Al Kooper's solo version of
"Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes" and the full electric group treatment.

Yeah! Back in the 60's, "get off my cloud" had just been released and we got a
request to do it at a gig we were doing, so like you said, I just mumbled it
and we came out real strong on the "Hey You" part and everyone loved it. Good
Luck!

NO such luck. Only a photo of her. I haven't gotten the Playboy book yet,

Hi,

Some of you will recall the death of Leighton, GD5 singer, early last year.
Well, today I got the following in my email:

"Leighton happens to be my cousin, and I'm happy to say that he's alive
and well and living in Southern California. In fact, I just spent
Christmas with him and his family. The rumors that get spread on the
internet..." The return address is: Debbie Dodd <Debbie_Dodd@rhino.com>

Can anyone in SD confirm this? Tony? What's up? This seemed to be a well
authenticated story.

Curious,

Greg

Hey Tony,

The Midnight catalogue lists a bunch of live and re-union discs (and maybe
Projections too)...which is why I haven't been getting 'em. That
Anthology/Unreleased stuff, on the other hand, sounds like something I'll
definitely be lookin' for. Thanks.

Rocky.

Hey Greg, Chris Gast here (original GDV bass player). Ted Friedman, (who with
myself and Leighton started the band), is the one who told me Leighton was
dead. Also, I talked recently to John Hanrattie and he said he had heard the
same thing. Since then I could never substantiate anything regarding his death
but accepted it as fact and posted it on our website. I have since moved from
SF to Austin and haven't heard a thing except the odd lament of his "tragic
demise". Ted actually heard it from a friend who "heard" it from an old
girlfriend.....in San Diego, a notorious rumour central.

I grew up with Leighton and knew his immediate family well .....the name Debbie
Dodd rings a bell, but I don't remember if that is his cousin. Anything is
possible. I last spoke with him in 1996 after his second release from prison
and he was doing well. He would enjoy these death rumours immensely, if indeed
rumours they are.......I'll give Ted a buzz regarding this....

sincerely,
Chris

I saw them in a club in '68. I was pretty familiar with their ESP lp's
(what high school kid wasn't back then?), but I was astounded at just how
hard they rocked live. The show closer was a tune called "Ten Minutes to
Twelve" that was one of the most feverish blasts of snotty guitar rock I
had ever heard. Out of left-field indeed.

I'm still hoping that the Remains will play a show in Barry Tashian's
new home turf, Nashville. It's only 90 minutes away from here.

Oh, man, I really feel like an idiot. I bagged those records! I
should've remembered the song after seeing the cover 2000 times.

Sorry about confusing a few of you about prices, it's not that you're
stooopidified it's that I go about things the confusing way.
So here's a more sensical system:-

 Place orders now:-

UK 3.50 ukp + 1 ukp (P&P)
Europe 3.50 ukp + 1.50 ukp
US/Oz
jap/ 3.50ukp + 2.50 ukp

I hope this is abit more understandable

Cheques and International Money Orders payable to Shindig. ( Also safely
concealed cash is a good way)
