No, from what I remember from tuning in last Saturday, I think it was
something truly imaginitive like Classic Rock that you can hear on about 20
stations in the N.Y.C./Long Island listening area.

Think I'm gonna go back to making my online appeal every 17 weeks...

In my first go 'round in radio as an undergrad, I had served as Music
Director for two years and assumed PD responsibilities when the kid who held
the position dropped out of school during my second year. There didn't seem
to be much interest in radio back then and I had a helluva time processing the
music and filling dead air.
About 4 years ago at my old station, a kid got elected as program director
who pretty much wanted to mold the station in his own image. He started by
recruiting kids he knew and putting them in the time slots of folks who had
their programs for years. Funny thing was, he didn't even threaten my shows
(local rock on Wednesday nights, co-hosting Blues Saturday mornings, and
rotating host on Jazz every 6th Sunday afternoon) Actually he used to call me
and ask for advice. We'd talk for hours. I'd give him the advice he asked
for, then he'd do the opposite. Anyway, when he was through purging the
community members he didn't like or thought had their day in the sun, he
started in on his fellow undergrads. His treatment of one girl in particular
to drive her out was despicable. The kid (an undergrad) who I co-hosted the
local rock show with got suspended a bunch of times for piddling shit 'til he
finally quit and the PD took his place. That's when I left for WMFO. Having
access to the executive offices as I do, I'm able to peek at who signs up for
what time slot in advance. No Tufts U. undergrad has signed up for my slot
thus far, which protects me there. Some of my fellow community members have
signed up for it, but I have seniority over them, plus I volunteer a lot of
time to the station, which protects me there. The best protection I've found
for my show is to volunteer to train the new kids to do radio, help 'em get
shows, and keep in touch fairly often afterward because today's freshman
trainee could be tomorrow's Program Director (...like our present one)

Also, a RealAudio setup & goodies can go for somewhat less than that if
that's the way you want to go...

As a fellow Mac user (who also doesn't bother with SoftWindows or
VirtualPC), it bums me out, as well. Of course, I've got PC's at work, if
I want to check out Searchin' For Shakes.

However, the fault is Microsoft's, I believe. They don't make a version of
Access for the Mac. (Though the Mac version of Office is newer than the
Windows version, they don't do a "Pro" version, which includes Access.)

Perhaps some Database experts out there could work on converting Searchin'
For Shakes into Filemaker Pro form?

I received this email (attached) almost immediately after I sent a
letter to both the PD and GM of WUSB... it appears that he (the PD)
sincerely *does* want to keep Spiney on the air, just not as often, and
have him alternate with another program. This sucks, I agree, but it's
better than no Psychedelicatessen at all, IMHO. Plus, maybe you could do
this for a few months, while you search for another public radio station
that can give you a weekly program.

I guess I can kind of understand how difficult it is to make these sorts
of decisions... we had to give a couple of shows the axe at KDHX in
order to make room on the schedule for Greaser's Lunchbox (rockabilly),
Scene Of The Crime (proto punk), Fishin' With Dynamite (alt.country),
Psych-Out!, and Swing Thing. But the shows we got rid of were pretty
dead weight ones... one bad rap/hip hop show that NEVER raised any money
for the station and two bad folk/acoustic music shows. Those programmers
weren't happy either. Just thought I'd throw that in.

Hi Kopper,

My name is David and I am the Program Director at WUSB. Yes,
ultimately, it was I who made the decision. However, the
decision that I am guilty of making is to reduce Spiney's
shift from two-hours-weekly to two-hours-biweekly. I made
a programming decision to have him alternate with another
staffer that does an excellent show and has limited
availability. Spiney was uphappy with this and decided
to close the Psychedelicatessen.

Spiney should not need to come up with a proposal to make
his show better so that it can get back on the air. He does
an excellent show already. I've asked him three times to re-
consider. I've also asked friends of his to speak with him
and ask him to come back. It is his decision to stay away.

For now I am not filling his slot permanently because I am
hoping that he will agree to do his show every-other week.
Eventually I will have to get a permanent replacement. We
have many staffers yet we are limited to only 24 hours in
our broadcast day. I have many qualified programmers and,
for right or wrong, and with the help of the advice of our
advisors and some past Program Directors, this is how I've
chosen to solve the problem: by making more and more people
alternate.

Perhaps you can speak with Spiney and ask him to reconsider. Or
maybe you feel as Spiney does, that no psychedelicatessen is
better than half what it was for the past five years. I don't
know, I just know that I want him to do his show, that I need him
to alternate, and that I can't hold that slot for him forever.

Hope that helps.
David

The Eurovision Song Contest does indeed still exist - last year's was won
by an Israeli transexual. The music performed mostly has very little to do
with the real world of course. People watch in their millions, although
they all claim that their viewing is done in an "ironic" manner...

Though I haven't done it yet, I would imagine that you could download it in
some kind of comma- or tab-delimited form, massage it a bit and have a less
elegant (and non-searchable) BUT STILL READABLE document.

It sounds like a terrific resource.

Hey Tony,

That was a nice piece on Baris Manco. I've been to Turkey twice and it's
probably the most interesting country I've ever visited. Istanbul is an
amazing city that is definitely underrated in terms of favorite U.S.
vacation destinations! Do you know if there are any decent Anadolu Rock
compilations available? If so, what label? Thanks much.

Be seeing you,
Bill

I have a Bottlecaps album but rarely play it. Nothing grabbed me. Anyway, I
always preferred Webber's stuff. Stampfel was just too grating for me.

Whoa! Please don't send it to the list -- it doesn't much like
attachments, and besides I imagine it would be of use to not much more than
10% of the 400+ subscribers. (Actually, the message would be rejected
anyway because I have it set to bounce any message over a certain size.)

Actually that wouldn't work either because you can only post from the
address you're subscribed from. Maybe you could send it directly to
another Mac Bomper, then that person could serve as the 'distributor' or
something.

I'd be happy to volunteer. (blairb1@mail.idt.net)
Alternately, if you had someplace you could post it for people to
download it, that'd be great. In the meantime, however, I'd be happy to
accept the file and then distribute it to any other Mac users who wanted
it. (It may take me a couple days to get it out, tho', as my life's pretty
hectic for the next five months.)

Hey,

All this talk about Mac vs. PC/Windows 95/98 is fine, but some of us on the
list are still on Windows 3.1 and therefore sol anyway. Plus I'm not sure
my screen-reader would work with this data-base even if I could access it.
So, I just wanted to thank folks like Brian Phillips, Glynis and others
who've been using it to answer some occasional Bomper queries over the last
few months. Whenever I get stumped by something related to the many cool
60's comps out there that so many of us dig, it's great to know that people
on this list are more than willing to check the resources at their disposal
to help out the rest of us. And of course, many thanks to Menachem and
Hitomi for taking the "Children of Nuggets" concept to the next level! I'm
sure more and more of us will get direct access to it as we upgrade our
systems. In the meantime, let's keep on sharing the info. I hope we never
get to the point where we just tell each other to check a data-base for an
answer to a cool/obscure question.

And many thanks to all who tried to help me unlock my self-made mystery
about "Weird" by the Wee Four!

Rocky.

None at all, although I am hoping to get some CD's from Turkey that have a lot
of this stuff compiled. This stuff, although massive in Turkey has little if
any interest outside of the country so exporting them is rare. When I do
finally get the CD's I will post the info on the list.
I am planning my vacation this year and Istanbul is a possibility as a
side trip from Italy, but it's all still up in the air. About 1/3 of the
company I work for are Turkish (strange huh?) They were amazed that I even
knew who Baris Manco was. They were all inshock that he died as well. It made
the front page of all the Turkish Newspapers. Tony

I was talking crazy, I should know better than to attempt to send that
huge thing as an attachment! Yikes!

Right now I've saved all of it (well - almost - read on) on disks, in
both FileMaker 4.0 Mac, and also the Microsoft Excel files. Blair, I'm
e-mailing you next to ask about "distributing" it to any "Bomper Macs"
who want it. Christ, it took up two whole disks!

For some odd reason the Comps part of it wouldn't translate or import,
even with MacLink Plus. My computer genuis slaveboy couldn't help with
it either! We tried everything and I think I'll just have to talk to
Hitomi about it. Any other suggestions?

Becky

There is the possibility of FTP 'ing it, using Fetch or Anarchie, if Hitomi
has an FTP server. I will also try to do the same thing on the PC side, as
FileMaker Pro files can be read cross-platform. How did you download the
text as tab-delimited?

>>How did you download the text as tab-delimited?

**When I got my inevitable "Netscape Navigator doesn't recognize file,
what do you want to do" dialog box, I just saved the file to my desktop.
It saved it automatically as a txt. file. I launched Excel, clicked on
Open file, and pick the saved txt. file from the Desktop menu. Then up
comes the "Import Wizard" boxes, with all the selections to designate
comma, tab, or space-delimited text, and preview format.........click on
Finish and there it is all nice and neat in Excel, which you can then
import into FileMaker Pro 4.0, but that's another long process which I
won't bore Bompland with, so e-mail me privately if you wanna know!

Becky
