Subject: Coffee 'n' Smokes Playlist, 2/6/99

Hello BOMP!ers. Right now I'm listening to the last hour Psych-Out! on line
after being awoken by a brawl taking place next door at a party (...yes it's
6am EST). From what I'm hearing now, I hope they tear it up next door every
week.
I'm *really* getting into Psych lately and I think recent C & S broadcasts
are reflecting that.
New in the house this week: Dionysus continued their support of WMFO and
Coffee 'n' Smokes in particular by sending along CDs by The Gears, Davie Allan
and The Arrows, and The Surf Trio. Also, I received CDs from Joe Whitney and
Sexton Ming, who looks like Wayne/Jayne County and sounds like Hasil Adkins.
Amazing. I also played a bunch of stuff that I've played several times on
recent broadcasts, so apologies are in order to the variety freaks out there

Sorry Glynis but I don't see the connection between those 2. Montand is
closer to singers like Dean Martin though very French (and not my cup of
tea). He was an actor too. He did one movie with Marilyn Monroe & I
believe they had an affair.

I just got the 1st 2 45s on that new Detour series of 45s & I think
people who dig psych should give 'em a try. The Leap has 1 long psych
side & 1 more moddish, both cool.Val's Basement sounds like the Prime
Movers (UK) without the organ, a mix of 60s punk/mod/Hendrix. Beware:
there're only 300 & 275 copies pressed so act fast.

Recently I had asked someone from Edmonton (close to gound zero for the
Von Zippers...actually they are from Calgary) about the rumor I heard a
while ago about the relation of the Mants to the Von Zippers....here
goes:

> There are no Mants in the Zippers and no Zippers in the Mants.
> The Zippers are a bunch of older guys (like mid-30s) headed up by Al
> "Rotoflex", who has been in bands forever (and was also in the now

Anyway, they got a couple of 7"'s and a new full legnth on
Estrus...singles on Rotoflex and Screaming Apple and a 10" on Au Go Go.
I think that's it.

week was "The Girl In the Invisible Bikini" and the week before...."Hot

But they said it was a "preview" - like there was something else to come.
Nothing else was mentioned, so we thought that was really weird?! The
web site is weird too, there was no mention of upcoming programming,
just some little games and trivia.

To assess a CD compiled by one of the best reviewers and journalists in the
world is a daunting task. Doubly so when he not only contributes his own
incisive reviews of each track within the CD booklet, but has also coined
the very term, "Deep Soul", that the whole project is about.

A case in point is his inclusion of Eddie Holman's I'm Not Gonna Give Up, a
personal favourite, which when I was assessing the tape quality, struck me
as unusual in that the vocal back-ups only appear at the crescendo of the
song at the end of the record. I was so amazed and impressed that I had to
compare the tape to my single to make sure I had the correct version.

With glee I made a mental note to feature this aspect of the song in my
review of the CD, only to be thwarted when reading Dave's notes. Inevitably
he had highlighted this very point and used it to extol the virtues of the
recording.

The Deep Soul Treasures CDs are Dave's personal music history of the genre
he loves the most. I know he sometimes feels saddled with having first
coined the terms Deep Soul and Northern Soul, especially as those phrases
have taken on their own life and have evolved to cover music they were never
originally intended for.

However it gives Dave a licence to ignore the pigeon-holes and categories
that we collectors and discographers have imposed on some records, and
judging them on performance alone he can surprise and delight us by
including them on these great projects.

I totally concur with Dave in his inclusion of mid and uptempo records as
Deep, if the vocal and lyrical content of the recording are that way.
Witness here Eddie Giles' Losin' Boy which goes from a solid dance beat to a
pounding climax where his wails of "oh yeah" almost develop into death
throes by the end.

Similarily Deep Soul doesn't have to be Southern (though it often helps).
The tracks by Ben E King, Lisa Richards, Nat Phillips and Bessie Banks all
hail from New York and don't even attempt to ape that great Southern ballad
style.

Bessie Banks' exquisite Go Now was of course the original of the song which
went on to sell a million copies for the UK pop group The Moody Blues. This
version epitomises all that Dave love's in a soul record; pleading,
heart-broken vocals on an intensely dramatic song. The whole performance
feels so improvised and spontaneous that one wonders if they didn't think
"Sod the sales figures, let's make a piece of art!"

Those were pretty much Dave and our sentiments in compiling Volume One, only
contradicted by you, the customers, actually buying the CD in the thousands
and making it Kent's best seller to date.

Also, there's a very good version on the Rainy Day LP, featuring Michael

T.E. Ford I guess, tho' this could well be a "traditional". My guess
is that both the above bands were inspired by Bobby Bland's
version.

> SHAKE BABY SHAKE (Jades+Johnny O'Keefe)

Obviously rooted in "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" (Jerry Lee/ Roy
Hall).

Elmore James

Gary Glitter

Mort Shuman & Kenny Lynch wrote this for the Small Faces,
Kenny can also be heard on the disc (the high pitched sha-la-la-
las)

Another "traditional" ?.

Hope this helps,

NBC is promoting a big Sunday movie event called "the 60's", which I think
airs tonight. The preview features some Motown music and Jefferson
Airplane's "Somebody To Love". I might tune in around the Simpsons and the
X-files, but I suspect this will be pretty mainstream. But ya never know
when unexpected coolness will appear.

Hi:

A while ago I started a thread on pre-pubescent 60's punks. Recently I
found an article on a group called the Ghastly Crum Tinies who apparently
were playing in support of the Lovin' Spoonful at the Night Owl (????).
Does anyone know if they released anything? Has anyone even heard of 'em
before?

Make that VERY unexpected coolness. Every review I have heard of this event
has panned it. Evidently, the "Black Panthers" featured within are
especially mainstream and non-threatening. You know, sometimes white
liberals WANT to be scared.

Good call, Glynis. If you're into that sorta thing (and I most
definately am), Zoot and another tenor man, Al Cohn, appear on "The
Jack Kerouac Collection", improvising in the background while Kerouac
reads some poems, recorded, I believe, in '56. Really interesting
stuff, as long as you're into Improvisational Jazz and Beat Poetry.

I tend to think the well-known "Trad" gets credit for this one in most
places, myself. (This person must be quite well-off by now.)

My memory's tugging at me right now saying it believes I read something
stating that the Beach Boys heard a version by The Kingston Trio and wanted
to do it. But I believe the credits I've seen say "Traditional."

Hey, Glynis -

No, you don't know me...I'm mostly a lurker...but the name of the
band sounds an awful lot like the title of an Edward Gorey book. "The
Gashlycrumb Tinies," which is a sort of alphabet of Gorey's trademark
creepy victorian-inflected drawings of children meeting untimely
demises. It begins, as I recall, "A is for Alice who fell down the
stairs / B is for Basil, devoured by bears..."

I have no knowledge of the band...but it would be interesting to
trace the connection to the Gorey book. Just exactly WHEN was this
Lovin' Spoonful gig?

Best,

Logie

Glynis,

Can't answer your specific question, but I'm not sure if, during the
original thread, anyone mentioned the incredibly raucous "Girl, Give Me
Love" by the Little Bits which has re-surfaced on the Yeah Yeah Yeah comp.
The first time I heard it was on an Eva Louisiana Punk volume. Total young
teen (or pre-teen) madness! And I don't even think they used a guitar.

  >>
yeah I taped some of it, did you see the Gary Lewis Scopitone for "Little
Miss Gogo"? I had it already but they had it in Ace quality, it's great. From
what I understand (read an article on it last month but I forget the mag name
but one of those TV entertainment mags) anyways, they are testing a theme show
to be added to the channel.  " American pop " will feature movies w/music;
(They showed Benny Goodman story and Glen Miller story as well)it will also
feature commericals and music bits inbetween the movies. A great idea that
reminds me a lot of TVland. I'm not sure if it's on a set schedule yet though.
