Yeah. I'm thinking then that this was a joke band - then the connection would
be appropriate - children meeting their untimely demise...ultimately never
existing?
The article was something I found in a 60's teen mag from '67. A time when the

SLOOP JOHN B.-

SHAME AND SCANDAL IN THE FAMILY-

These are both traditional Caribbean (mento?) tunes. I've got a Wailers
version (P. Tosh on vocals) of the second, and Maya Angelou did it as
well. As for Sloop John B., does someone have the writing credit for
"Leave Me Alone" by Them? Remarkably similar, no?

ST. JAMES INFIRMARY-
This is indeed an oldie. Cab Calloway does a great version in what I
think is the greatest one-reel cartoon of all time, _Betty Boop in Snow
White_. Lou Rawls Live! version is pretty good too.

SHAKE YOUR MONEYMAKER and sITTIN' ON TOP OF THE WORLD are credited to
Elmore and Wolf respectively.

I'm in the midst of reviewing the Girl Crazy comp on Remedial and I came

heavily of a band I really liked quite a bit in the mid-80s, Salem 66,

them at Folk City with The Mosquitos one night in the Spring of '85 (the
night The Mosquitos did their acoustic set in honor of the old Folk City

Yeah..."The Gashlycrumb Tinies" is a great band name, with or without

book.

I asked about the date because I wasn't sure when Gorey did the book.
As it turns out, it dates back to 1963. The members of band probably
should be congratulated for their cleverness.

And no, as far as I know, Edward Gorey has nothing to do with The Gories.

I think they just gave up after 1990's "Down The Primrose Path". They
Should've stuck around for the so-called year-of-the-women-rockers.
Salem 66 is better than Hole, Liz Phair or whoever did that "Where are
the Cowboys"song. Homestead (if they're still around) should put out a
retrospective. "Sufferin' Bastard", "Seven Steps Down", "Across The
Sea" were all great songs.

Yes.

And like "Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald", it's based on a true story.
The "John B" sank around the turn of the century.

I think you can actually scuba dive down to the wreckage of the "John
B". Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the island, so don't

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a tiny ship.

According to THE NEAREST FARAWAY PLACE, "John B Sails" is a traditional
sea chantey of the Bahamas. It's the story of the grounding of the ship
off of Nassau. The wreck was excavated in 1926.

Carl Sandburg published the chantey as a poem called "The John B Sails"
in in 1927. Also in 1927, some guy named Alfred George Wathall did a
modern arrangement for radio station WGN. The arrangement became
popular in folk circles. The Kingston Trio took their version from The
Weavers.

Al Jardine brought the song to the Beach Boys, so he wasn't useless
after all

Subject: Twin Cities

I'm hoping to do a little record hunting during a trip to the twin
cities next weekend. I've checked out Let It Be and some of the stores
in that general area-- Roadrunner, Garage D'or, and Oarfolkjokeopus.
Any that I missed? Or anything of particular interest in St. Paul.
Finally, while I was driving maniacally around searching for these
places, I saw a store that seemed to specialize inrock memorabilia.
Worth checking out?
Thanks
Jim

Has anyone mentioned "Love Me Then Go Away" by the Cynics?

whose "Across The Sea" was a favorite of mine back then. I remember seeing
them at Folk City with The Mosquitos one night in the Spring of '85 (the
night The Mosquitos did their acoustic set in honor of the old Folk City
policy). Does anyone know whatever became of them?

I can only tell you I spotted the bass player (Beth Kaplan, I think) and
vocalist working in Newbury Comics in Boston a number of years back. They did
several shows at Maxwell's in Hoboken (electric shows). The last album of
theirs that I've got is Natural Disasters, National Treasures on Homestead.
Other than that I am both clueless as to what happened after that and curious.

Artie Shaw did a version in the late '30s. Not sure who wrote it tho'. I
think it dates back to the 1910s...

It's an old Dixieland Jazz standard, my dad has versions by Louie Armstrong

Nothing else was mentioned, so we thought that was really weird?! The
web site is weird too, there was no mention of upcoming programming,
just some little games and trivia.

AMC has tried a spin off network before, Amercian Romance Classics. May be
this is in the same vein? AMC is competing against Ted "I own the rights to
almost everything on film" Turner's "Turner Movie Classic's channel, so maybe
this is preview to some kind of launch....

No, he co-starred with Monroe in Let's Make Love. Monroe was in Some Like
it Hot with Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis.
