i took a chance on these a couple of months ago. yeah yeah yeah is very
good. definitely worth the price.

but with the exception of a couple of standouts, the no no no comp is pretty
terrible. some of the tunes on the latter half of the comp could have been
by the carpenters. i happen to love dark, brooding,
guy-gets-dicked-over-by-girl tunes--even if they aren't garage-ish--which is
what i thought this comp would be. but most of these tunes would have been
better left obscure.

my 2 cents,

A few off the top of me head:

"H-A-T-R-E-D" - Tonio K.
"I Used To Love Her (But I Had To Kill Her)" - Guns N' Roses
"Phooey On You" - Ken "Festus" Curtis

Tom Ewell, of all people ("Seven-Year Itch"(1955) with Monroe and "The
Girl Can't Help It"(1956) with Mansfield)! Some guys have all the luck,
eh?

One of the films that made Montand famous is the incredible "Wages of
Fear"(1952) directed by French suspense king Henri-Georges Clouzot, who
made "Diabolique"(1954) with Montand's wife, Simone Signoret. The
director's wife, Vera Clouzot, costars in both of them.
HIGHLY recommended viewing!

Hello
I'm interested in selling my wares all year long in the good ol'USA
(with those nice new bills of course) and would appreciate any comeback
on Record conventions ONLY on the East Coast that would be worthwhile
for me to attend. The furthest I could probably drive is
Chicago-Milwaukee on the west, down to Pittsburgh and Atlanta, around
those regions. I sell mainly 60s vinyl. The only show so far I've
attended is the WFMU show in NYC. Great! But I want more!!$$$$!!!
Basically if there are at least 50-70 dealers that sell vinyl records,(I
went to one in Cleveland 2 years ago and counted 12 tables of bootlegs
and just one table of LP records!!!! In the town where there's a Rock n
roll museum????????) and 500-700 customers attending I would be
interested. Info on Philadelphia, and other large cities would be
appreciated.... Thanks, Denis
ULTRA CHICKS UPDATE (just in) The Dat will be delivered today and Volume
4 "Yé-Yé Girls" should be out by Feb 25......Or so I heard....

"Before I Hit The Rubber Room"-The Freeze
"Valentine's Day"-Dollface ("Shoot Cupid in the head/I

as opposed to the screechy one we're getting now. Can anyone recommend some

I saw The Action in London the week before Cavestomp and thought they were
pretty good. Of course, they weren't quite as aggressive as one would have
liked but that's to be expected I suppose. They did put on a good show and
Reggie's voice was in fine form, especially when one considers the fact
that he's had his fair share of problems in life in the past 30 years.
Whilst I wouldn't rate them as high as The Remains reunion I would still
recommend them to anyone that's a fan. You won't be disappointed. It has to
be said that my opinion does differ from some other people who I might have
expected to have been excited by them. However, I've learned over the years
to expect the worst from reunions - so maybe I'm easily pleased when
something turns out okay. - PJ

But what about the women?

We'll Sing in the Sunshine - Gale Garnett (First line after the chorus, "I

Boy is Gone - Lynn and the Invaders
Hurtin' Kind - Bittersweets
Don't Waste My Time - Daughters of Eve
I Can Never Go Home Anymore - Shangri-Las

Mary McLeod Bethune was walking across the lawn of the White House to
attend a meeting. A groundskeeper or guard saw a woman of color and "knew"

Auntie?"

To which she replied, "Pardon me, but which one of my sister's children are

I dunno... the Raunch Hands certainly had their share (esp. early on, if I
recall correctly... I remember being amazed when they had a girl sax
player - for a week or two). Of course, the Fuzztones didn't write too
many originals... and their better ones often had Raunch Hand vocalist
Michael Chandler getting co-writing credits.

And the Devil Dogs (and their predecessor
band, The Rat Bastards) certainly had a huge number of misogynist lyrics.
"North Shore Bitch" springs to mind.

Can't improve on Joey's expertise, of course, but tell me more. Does
Paul Gayten predate Buddy Johnson's Orchestra with Ella Johnson's vocal?
I thought Buddy wrote it but no doubt I am wrong. I gotta say, Annie
Laurie is about as hip as Ella, and Ella is HIP.

Also there was a big ol' hit version by Lenny...Dee? in the late 50s?,
which is the source for a lot of more recent covers, seemingly. Bonnie
Raitt and so on.

I tried,

Yes, I was also thinking about "Past, Present, Future" which may be even
MORE dreary and defeatist! And then there's "Give Us Your Blessings" in
which the protagonists both die in a car crash. Gotta L-U-V 'em!

Gosh, aren't any more of our French amis going to object to Yves Montand
being compared to Barry "Yech" Manilow? Montand was hot! I thought he
was considered the sexiest thing since Belmondo at one time. Granted, he
may have made some lousy recordings. I even like "Let's Make Love" which
I don't think is regarded very well by critical types.

Here's two more:

"Over You"-Paul Revere and the Raiders
"Run For Your Life"-The Beatles (maybe they don't
count, but threatening death to a girl if she cheats
sure counts as anti-Valentine's Day to me! The
Raiders' tune is along those same lines.)

Yes, I think they're very good and a good companion to the
