I recently got this 7" from a friend in France. It has 2 songs on it but I
don't remember if it's previously unreleased stuff from the 60's or a
reissue of a 7". I should check when I get home. Musically not the most
exciting or groundbreaking band but one has to pay attention to the
lyrics!
Is the name of the band a play with words? Could Homard Violet (Purple
Lobster?) also mean "little violated/raped man" spelled slightly
differently?

I just got sent this totally rad disc by some group called 6X on Daemon
Records...it is my fave rave release of the new year and I want to tell ya'll
why. This 14 track disc has the buzzy poppy punk sound that I love but with
feather weight girly vocals. It reminds me like a cross between Nikki & The
Corvettes and The Flatmates, more the former than the latter. Throw in a
little Ronnie Spector for good measure. They seem to be an off-shoot of some
band called 17 Years, who I have never heard of. Hell, they even do a cover
of "Be My Baby". See this is the thing, and I know Blair will get ticked off
at me for saying this, The Muffs were too gruff, The Fastbacks were to smart
for their own good and Cub was too lo-fi and 6X is just right....

Matthew just played a couple songs by 'em over the phone for me. I'm not
ticked off at him for saying the Muffs *are* too gruff, tho'; personally,
it's part of what I like about them. (Of course, the fact that Kim writes
incredible songs is another.) As to the Fastbacks... they've got their good
sides and their lesser sides. But live they're always a blast. Cub? Well,
they were more lo-fi earlier on, but their charm for me was always the
melodies. Lisa Marr writes great stuff. And you can hear her in her new
band, Buck (great disc on SFTRI). Still those great melodies, but better
production and sped up most of the time. Excellent.

Oh yeah, 6X. The stuff Matthew played on the phone was pretty good. I think
I'd have to hear it on my own stereo to absorb the full impact, but for now
I'm saying I want to hear more. No, they didn't capture me the way The
Muffs or Cub do, but... Diff'rent Strokes and all that.

I stand corrected. Unfortunately, to my ears (remember, this is personal
opinion), The Fuzztones' records just weren't as good after Rudi left New
York. That's not to say some of the stuff wasn't decent, just that I'd much
rather listen to Lysergic Emanations, Leave Your Mind At Home and the Bad
News Travels Fast 45. Give me Elan Portnoy on guitar, Deb O'Nair on organ,
Michael Jay on bass, and Ira Elliott on drums any day. The later lineups,
while they had some good players, just didn't seem to be as dangerous/cool
as the New York bunch.

Don't dare miss the great all-singles show in Allentown, PA on March 19-20.
Last year I scored tons of great singles from the more than 100 all-singles
dealers!
Then you could fly to Austin ,Texas the following week for the monster record
show there. Then in another month or so after Austin, get ready for the WFMU
show again.

It ain't. It was The Persuaders who hit with it in
the fall of '71.

I think it was recorded early in the Mick Taylor era.

Unless you meant the Dramarama lineup, which was Chris Carter, Mr. E.,
Pete Wood, and John Easdale. Mick Taylor did some session work on this
LP, but not on the cover of "Memo From Turner".

Dont forget 'nine months later' - cor what a shocker!. You know the ep and
rudi and band are in this row boat and they are all looking up at this
ghastly horror pregnant angel and they are all scared cos it looks like none
of them is sure who done it.

Also the Pandora's YOU DONT SATISFY, just so that its not one sided....

I reckon the best thing I've heard of theirs is a CD released here in Aus by
Au Go Go, it's called "Wow 'em down at Franzls", but I've had a listen to
some of their other stuff and was not quite as impressed as I was with
"Wow.." They look like they'd be fun to see though!!
Judy Jetson
p.s. if you check the cover of "Wow..." you'll see how luverly the lads look
in miniskirts!! Cheeky buggers!

Buddy did write it, so it does seem likely that he had recorded it first,
but if he did it didn't hit any of the Billboard charts so I don't know for
sure. And yeah, Lenny Dee revived it in 1963 and had a big hit which I'm
sure was the source, directly or indirectly, of all the versions since.

Hey folks --

Much first-time, first-rate material was spun these past two weeks: Thanks
much to Howlin' Andy Hound (of the late Thee Viceroys) for providing a copy
of his suitably snotty demo, "The Big Bad Sounds of Howlin' Andy Hound!"
Tasty, fresh-from-the-oven alt-country platters that came our way included
Hadacol and the Riptones, from the Chicagoland Checkered Past and Bloodshot
labels respectively. Also much appreciated were terrific new CDs from
Dionysus -- the Surf Trio's "Forbidden Sounds" and Davie Allan & The
Arrows' "Loud Loose & Savage" (a great compilation of fuzz from '83-'93).
We also spun the must-own Hondells compilation by ATM Records of Germany, a
CD reissue of the Pretty Things classic "S.F. Sorrow," and what could
always turn out to be the last-ever legit Roky Erickson release, the fairly
lo-fi (but quite touching) "Never Say Goodbye," on Emporer Jones (Austin).

As always, many thanks to the artists and labels responsible for producing
tonight's music, and to the loyal listeners who inexplicably encourage us
to air it every week!

(If you're in the neighborhood, Radio Rumpus Room broadcasts Fridays at
9-10:30 p.m. on KFAI Fresh Air Radio, FM 90.3 Minneapolis and 106.7 St.
Paul.)

Playlist for Friday, January 29, 1999

SAVVY SHOW STARTER (ALWAYS LOCALLY RECORDED!)

Deacons -- Baldie Beat (Top Teen Bands, Vol.1; Bud-Jet)
Multiple listeners called up in answer to my plea for information about the
fabled mid-Sixties Baldies vs. Greasers gang turf battles in these Twin
Cities. Most claimed to have a brother or friends of brothers in the gangs
(always the Greasers, it seems) and all were in agreement that it was
basically a "class" thing, with the well-dressed, mod-ish Baldies at odds
with the more working class, white T-shirt- and levis-clad rockabilly
Greasers. (Imagine "Quadrephenia," with the Mods vs the Rockers.) Did heads
get bent? It was said... (Though there is no evidence that the Deacons ever
shaved theirs.)

Sonics -- Boss Hoss (Psycho-Sonic; Big Beat)
Howlin' Andy Hound -- Gonna Make U Believe (The Big Bad Sound of Howlin'
Andy Hound [demo]; Mod Holland)
The Incrowd -- Set Me Free (Jump, Jive & Harmonize; Teenage Shutdown)
The Outcast -- Everything's Alright (GS I Love You: Japanese Garage Bands
of the 1960s; Big Beat)

Dudley & The Doo-Rytes -- U.F.O. (Big Hits of Mid-America: The Soma Records
Story; Plum)
Young Savages -- The Invaders Are Coming (Highs in the Mid-60s, Vol. 10:
Wisconsin; AIP)
Myron Lee and the Caddies -- Homicide (Minnesota Rockers Vol. 1; Collector)
Dan Bern -- Talkin' Alien Abduction Blues (Dog Boy Van; Work)

Eagles -- Doolin-Dalton (instro)/Outlaw Man (Desperado; Asylum)
Sadies -- Dying Is Easy (Precious Moments; Bloodshot)
Wilderness Road -- Bounty Man/Interlude in D (Wilderness Road ; Columbia)
Riptones -- Jack's Last Time (Cowboy's Inn; Bloodshot)

Astronauts -- The Hearse (Surfin' With/Competition Coupe; Bear Family reissue)
Krontjong Devils -- Morpheous (On Tour!!!; Telstar)
Volcanos -- Doheny Dawn (Finish Line Fever; Estrus)
Phantom Surfers & Davie Allan -- Sheena Was a Punk Rocker (Skaterhater;
Lookout!)

Joe "King" Carrasco and the Crowns -- Party Doll (self-titled; Hannibal)
Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs -- The Hair on My Chinny Chin Chin (The Best
of...; MGM)
Bobby Moore and the Rhythm Aces -- Searching for My Love (Beg, Scream &
Shout! box; Rhino)
Taj Mahal -- Six Days on the Road (In Progress & in Motion; Columbia/Legacy)

Playlist for Friday, February 5, 1999

SAVVY SHOW STARTER (ALWAYS LOCALLY RECORDED!)

Underbeats -- Wishes Don't Come True (Free Flight: Unreleased Dove
Recording Studio Cuts, 1964-'69)
The Underbeats ranked second in popularity only to the Trashmen in the
Cities, and in 1964, in the absence of the constantly touring T-men, they
pretty much took over the joint.

Beefeaters -- It Won't Be Wrong (Don't Be Long) (Byrd Parts; Raven)
Trashmen -- Love's Made A Fool Of You (Bird Call: The Twin Cities Stomp Of
The Trashmen; Sundazed)
Hadacol -- Better Than This (self-titled; Checkered Past)
Bottle Rockets -- Financing His Romance (Leftovers; Doolittle)

Handsome Family -- Cathedrals (Through The Trees; Carrot Top)
Clarence Ashley -- Little Sadie (My Rough And Rowdy Ways, Vol.1; Yazoo)
Johnny Cash -- I Still Miss Someone (16 Biggest Hits; Columbia/Legacy)
Ted Hawkins -- Strange Conversation (Suffer No More: The Ted Hawkins Story;
Rhino)

Lavern Baker -- Hey Memphis (Hot Boppin' Girls; Supersonic Sound)
Bruce & Terry (as the Rogues) -- Come On Let's Go (The Best Of...; Sundazed)
Ritchie Valens -- Fast Freight (Richie Valens box; Del-fi)
Flat Duo Jets -- Blues Wrapped Around My Head (Lucky Eye; Outpost)
Cranktones -- Lover's Curse (Vibrate With...; Rhubarb)

Surf Trio -- Little Death Coupe (Forbidden Sounds; Dionysus)
3D Invisibles -- Hot Rod Hearse (B-Movie Brain; Neurotic Bop)
Volcanos -- Maverick (Finish Line Fever; Estrus)
Davie Allan & The Arrows -- Arrow Space (Loud, Loose And Savage; Dionysus)
Hondells -- The Wild One (You're Gonna Ride With Us [1964]; ATM)
Phantom Surfers & Davie Allan -- Polyurethane (Skaterhater; Lookout!)

Pretty Things -- Trust (S.F. Sorrow; Snapper reissue)
Pink Faries -- The Sparrow Is A Sign (The Golden Years: 1969-1971; Purple
Pyramid)
Roky Erickson -- You're An Unidentified Flying Object (Never Say Goodbye;
Emporer Jones)

That's all, folks!

Ron
