I saw The Action in London the week before Cavestomp and thought they were
pretty good. Of course, they weren't quite as aggressive as one would have
liked but that's to be expected I suppose. They did put on a good show and
Reggie's voice was in fine form, especially when one considers the fact
that he's had his fair share of problems in life in the past 30 years.
Whilst I wouldn't rate them as high as The Remains reunion I would still
recommend them to anyone that's a fan. You won't be disappointed. It has to
be said that my opinion does differ from some other people who I might have
expected to have been excited by them. However, I've learned over the years
to expect the worst from reunions - so maybe I'm easily pleased when
something turns out okay. - PJ

Montand established his fame as a popular singer in the fifties (he was a
former beau of Edith Piath) and then developed a successful career in the
French cinema during the sixties. During the middle of the decade he
ventured to Hollywood, like so many French cinema stars before and after
him, and was all but ignored. Back in Europe he continued to make
excellent cinema until his death. Mind you has anyone seen that
excrutiating Godard film he made in '72 with Jane Fonda based around the
events of May '68? (The student riots and civil unrest.) We studied it at
college as part of the 'Mai '68' module and most of the class appeared
bored rigid throughout the heavy political sloganeering. Finally, like
many popular Francophone singers of the period he wasn't actually French
(ie Jacques Brel, Nino Ferrer etc) but of Italian origin and raised in
Marseille.

2 unissued cuts. Like Dinos said, not amazing musically speaking (ok
mid60s white r&b/beat), but pretty far-out lyrics.The 45 has a great

What do you mean they don't count?? I understand that some of the people
in Bompland who are only into the punk-punk side of it could not dig the
Beatles but they're part of the Bomp Universe whatever they think. They
had their share of crap like "Michelle" (you have to hear the Ladmo Trio
version to enjoy that one), but they still were a great beat then pop
band. If some people want to see them out of Bompland, they should
remember than even Abba was included in Bomp magazine!

Also, is the date March 20th as we were told some time ago, or is it Feb.

Fron what Gaurdon says in his interview, he just wanted to
have a ridiculous name for the band, and he
reports that they hesitated at that time between "Les Griffons"
(trade mark of a french flushing sytem in the 60s), "Les
Guitares d'Acier Bleues" (The Blue Steel Guitars"), etc...
They finally choose "Le Homard Violet" (The Purple Lobster)
because it's an animal that hurt, and "purple" because it's the
colour you are when you're dead by asphyxia.... that's all !

Well, even though the original post asked for mid-sixties songs...

The album is a classic. It is a concept album (KEEP READING!) that follows
the exploits of John as he strikes out with numerous women. It takes up
the story line from the non-Lp flipside, "Going Steady" ("I love Sharon and
Sharon loves me") and then he catches Sharon cheating on him with a fellow
named Colin and we are off to the races! Some may be turned off by the
occasional synthesizer, but even though Graham Fellowes doesn't have the
greatest voice (a small pause to think of some of the other records that we
listen to on this list), the songs are quite tuneful and the story is fun.
The album also came with an insert that delineated the story through a
"Snakes and Ladders" game. Small warning: The version of "Jilted John" on
the album is different from the single. I prefer the 45 version.

Is Fellowes still performing the Shuttleworths show? For those who haven't
heard it, he plays the husband and wife on this 15-minute show and John
Shuttleworth is a frustrated (and none too talented) songwriter. For that
matter, what did Fellowes do in the interim? I remember asking at "Off the
Record" many times if there was a second Jilted John and of course, there
was not.

In other news: The Persuaders, not the Persuasions performed the superior
original version of "Thin Line...". The Persuasions were or are an
acapella group with no relation to the Persuaders. One of the Persuasions
passed away in the 90's.

So long Baz, I'm going now,

Well, I'm sure you're idea of "cooler" is different than mine! Yeah, the
Pandoras had the audacity to "stray" to a more commercially acceptable form of
music (can you imagine a musician actually wanting to be succesful doing what
they do best? What sell-outs! I bet you have a job that you love and are
totally into...in fact I bet all the elitist bomp snobs have jobs that they
love and haven't sold their souls for! Ha!) WHILE the Pandoras were still
playing garage, they were not only much better looking and sexier (and better
dressers) than The Brood, but their songs were better (even if they were all
ripped off!), and Paula's vocals way out-snarled the chick from the Brood. Hey
don't get me wrong, I dig The Brood too, but I'm just giving my opinion, which

Gotta side with Glynis on the Brood/Pandoras issue, having seen both
live and heard all their records.

The Pandoras were very cool in the beginning, but then abandoned their
Charmkin roots. That's always left me feeling sour over that,
especially since they seemed to do everything possible to alienate the
scene that was their first audience of supporters. Paula also loses
MAJOR points with me for firing the entire band ("getting rid of the
fat girls" as she put it) after the first LP. I have to admit, tho',
that I liked the 2nd line-up initially as well.

The Brood have remained true to the teen spirit of things, and are
tougher than just about ANY other band you'd care to throw out there,
R&B delinquents aside of course.

Richard

I got this right from Barry and Holly Tashian's email list, so consider it
to be the gospel truth.

Uh, you better knock that CHIP off your shoulder dearie. Why can you give
your opinion, but anyone else who does is an "elitist snob"? And what does
having a job that I love and are totally into do with all of this might I
ask????
Did I mention the word "sell-out"? NO! Of course not. Whatever the Pandoras
tried to do, they didn't sell out in my books - basically, because they
didn't succeed! I think they just changed their tune, and sucked (in more
ways than one) because of it. When I last saw the girls, it was pretty
darned clear they were NOT happy with what they were doing. Paula was a
haggared half-naked mess, trying to convince a bunch of girls that they
should play her songs. It seemed like a struggle for her just to get the
concert going, both personally and with the band. Sometimes doing what you
love, just doesn't translate into doing it as a job.

 WHILE the Pandoras were still
>playing garage, they were not only much better looking and sexier (and better
>dressers) than The Brood, but their songs were better (even if they were all
>ripped off!),

I'd disagree. I don't particularly care what either band looks like, and I
think the Brood write MUCH better songs! Incidentally, I have fun searching
for where the Brood ripped their songs off of! Chris is the master of the
rip-off!

The Brood aren't supposed to be sexy - and gosh, I don't think you've seen
the Brood live? They are so totally rockin' and carry the true spirit of
rock 'n roll. Personally, I don't find wearing t-shirts with boob holes cut
out for naked breasts to protrude thru as sexy.

Hey, lookit that! I have an opinion too! This ain't only one sided baby.
Everyone is allowed to have their opinion!

Ok, the rest of you. I'll pose the same question to you as I did to dearest
Mimi.
The Pandoras and the Brood wrestle in an all-girl blow out, in green jello.
Who's the winner?

Oh, MAN... they're gonna let the Rising Storm play? I saw those guys at
Maxwells in '92 (their 25th reunion thing) with the Lyres and The Swingin'
Neckbreakers (playing their first-ever NYC metro area show at the time).
The Rising Storm absolutely STUNK! I guess this means I'll just hang out
in the back or something. But I *will* be there!

Which lineup of each band? ;-)

As to the rest of this... While I far prefer The Pandoras
(obviously, I mean through Stop Pretending and that's about it), I agree
that looks have nothing to do with whether a band can rock. Nobody will
ever call The Original Sins pin-up boys, but those guys put out some of
the best rock'n'roll of the late 80s/early 90s.
There's nothing wrong with a band wanting to be successful.
However, I think we can all agree that The Pandoras were *not* successful
with their change in musical direction. Worse yet, it made various members
miserable. (In '93, Kim Shattuck did not even want to *hear* the word
"Pandoras." In her words, "That band SUCKED!" And Melanie Vammen had a
pretty bad taste in her mouth from the experience, too.)
I still wonder what Paula might have done next if she hadn't
passed away in '91.

Well, I bought the LP in Adelaide for four measly bucks but I ended up
giving it to a friend who found it far more exciting. It's very casio driven
"noo wave", even the classic "Jilted John" is done in this style, a bit
dissapointing.

I think you're wrong, "misogynist" is not the right word for "North Shore

Subject: Re: Memo From Turner

There are two released versions of "Memo From Turner": a 'Stones' version
(which was released on "Metamorphosis") and a Mick Jagger solo version
(which was released as a single, and on the "Performance" Soundtrack).

However, the recording details for each song are somewhat sketchy.

Consensus is that the Jagger solo version features various session
musicians, including Jack Nitzsche and Ry Cooder. Recording date/location
may be July 1968/Los Angeles.

As for the version on "Metamorphosis": some sources label it as featuring
all of the Stones (except Brian Jones); however, I found a couple books
which state that this version actually features Jagger, Steve Winwood,
Jim Capaldi, and possibly Dave Mason & Rick Grech. Recording
date/location may be 11-17-68/Olympic Studios, London.

Hope this helps,

Scott

Subject: Pandoras vs Brood, and the chip on my shoulder!

All I meant by the "elitist snob" crack was that it seems to me that most of
the subscribers are so narrow-minded that they won't give anything past 1966 a
chance. I wasn't fond of the Pandoras going hard rock, but I knew them very
well, and happen to know that Paula thought that they could be more succesful
if they went that route. As far as the "work" remark, I'm saying that to some
people a band is a CAREER, and they spend all their time trying to make it
succeed. And in my book playing music, ANY kind of music, would beat having a
day job I hated. I just think that most people who criticize don't really
understand the true motivation behind some bands decisions to try new things.
And who said you couldn't have an opinion?

Sorry I don't have the complete listing but I know that Ry Cooder is the
guitarist on the single version. I think Charlie might be the drummer,
but i'm not positive just who the rhythm section was. Somebody with the
Stones Singles Collection, please help out!
There is a version on _Metamorphosis_ that's clearly Keith and the boys,
although given the time period _Performance_ was shot it's possible that
there was no second guitarist. Remember Brian wasn't at all the BB
sessions and they really didn't get Mick Taylor on board until early
summer of 1969.
Sorry I couldn't be more definitive, Mark
