Yeah, well I think we all learn the hard way how e-mail can sometimes
amplify an opinion or a little irony/sarcasm in between the sender and the
many receivers on this list. In other words, personal taste/opinion
good...over-generalization bad! If you flame out, you can expect to be
singed a bit in return.

As for the green (and purple?) jello cat fight, I'm hoping for a draw (with
no noticeable scars on either band. This is way-cool fantasy and could
lead to a whole series. Headcoatees vs. Girl Bombs? On a more serious
note, I dug early Pandoras as much as anyone, but was very disappointed by
their misguided change in direction (at least the C. Kings recovered from
similar follie). The Brood have definitely written, covered and performed
some amazing material too...and they've never wavered from the NOW sound!
That's gotta count for something. But, outside of the fantasy frolics, I
don't see any point in sayin' one band's better than the other. We don't
spend a whole lotta time on the list comparing the Fuzztones and the
Chesterfield Kings, Both are great and both have had their weaknesses. so
why pit trailblazing femme garage bands against each other. If anything,
we need more musically-inclined chicks inspired by both the Brood and the
early Pandoras.

'66-fixated and proud of it!

Rocky.

"She ain't nothin' but a pig with tits" isn't misogynistic?

The dictionary defines misogyny as a "hatred of women." A misogynist,
therefore, hates women. I agree, I don't think The Devil Dogs hate women.
(Having known those guys (and their precursor band, The Rat Bastards) for a
long time, I know for a fact that they don't.) However, that does not
prevent some of their lyrics from being "misogynistic;" they portray a
hatred of women (e.g. the lyric shown above.)

Usually, lyrics are called "misogynistic" when they talk about treating
women in an extremely shabby fashion (so as to imply a hatred of sorts
towards those of their gender.) Under that definition, other Devil Dogs'
recordings will fit, as well. ("Hosebag" springs to mind. I'd have to check
downstairs, as that might've been written by Childish, but I think the
Devil Dogs were the first to release it. It's been 11 years or so since
those guys recorded that, so my memory's a bit rusty.)

I'm not putting the band down for it, merely stating my opinion. Heck, in
my mind The Devil Dogs are one of the absolute BEST bands of the past
decade (another would be The Original Sins; no misogyny on their end, tho'
"Just 14" certainly had subject matter that many objected to.)

I'd be happy to. Overall, I'd hand it to The C. Kings. I loved all the
stuff they did up to and including Don't Open Till Doomsday. Berlin Wall of
Sound didn't do much for me. Drunk On Muddy Water was OK. Of course I liked
Night of the Living Eyes, but that was early recordings, so it doesn't
deserve to get lumped into the post-'87 category. Let's Go Get Stoned (I
might have the title wrong) was decent Mick Taylor-era Stones' type stuff,
but didn't set me on fire. However, the band's surf vocal disc was nothing
short of GENIUS! And some of the recordings they've done lately on the
garage side have been damn good, too.

The Fuzztones... Leave Your Mind At Home was great. Lysergic Emanations was
good. The Bad News Travels Fast 45 was great. And then Rudi left NYC. Some
decent stuff, but nothing I really cared to buy. I've heard people say good
things about the recent single, but I haven't heard it yet.

While I thought the Fuzztones were great in their NYC period, I still
preferred The Chesterfield Kings. To me, they were what it was all about.
(And those wild nights at Scorgies at 150 Andrews Street in Rochester will
forever live in my memory.) (As will some great nights spent at the Dive
and Irving Plaza in NYC.)

But isn't there a big difference between hatred of an individual woman and
hatred of women in general? I mean, the line you quoted certainly suggest
hatred of the woman referred to, but I don't think it implies anything about
the guy's opinion of the the other billion or so women in the world.

Just being picky,

I think it was "Suck The Dog" that Billy Childish wrote for the Devil Dogs
(there is also a version of that song by Thee Headcoats somewhere - the
"Heavens..." LP maybe?). Still, not much difference between that song and
"Hosebag" when it comes to sentiment.

It's a great song, but I'd expect a brand new garage band to
cover it, but not the Kings. I've always dug the Kings and I know they aren't
the kingpin songwriters (when the Lyres/Kings split 45 came out, it wasn't
hard to figure out which Kings original the Lyres would cover).
I think the point here is that the Kings have been doing this for almost 2
decades and Greg has an amazing collection of discs. I think they could've
pulled off an lp of obscure as heck covers and it would've appealed to more
people. I remember buying their first lp when it came out and thinking half of
the tracks were originals.
They always would amaze me covering the most obscure stuff in the 80's before
the tracks were ever comped.
I agree w/Freddy on this one, an lp by them w/obvious covers isn't
something I'd wanna play more than once. Tony's 2 cents

Haha! I did almost exactly the same thing!!! Of course it was about 1984 or
so when I got my first Chesterfield Kings record, "Stop!" (which was sadly
stolen last year) kinda by accident, had NO idea who they were and didn't
know anyone else at school who knew of them, but I thought it looked cool
and bought it anyway...wow!!! they were THE coolest band I'd ever heard next
to the Stems!!! Living in this neck of the woods though, I didn't really
know anyone else who was interested in this kind of music, especially after
the "Grunge explosion" (for want of a better term) which hit ole Brisbane
town pretty hard. So when 60's style guitar pop type stuff became
unfashionable, it was practically impossible to get without spending an
awful lot of time and money....Then Monster Magnet came along, but that's
another story!!
But yes, I'll agree with you guys on that point as well, the Kings should
surely be able to think of some less well known tracks to bring back and
amaze everyone with. Most of the songs they've done for this new album are
commonly covered by loads of bands all over the place... I still love "Five
Years..." it's one of my faves of all time!!! Do we really need to hear
another version though?
