Glynis asked:
>>The Pandoras and the Brood wrestle in an all-girl blow out, in green jello.
Who's the winner?<<

Simple. Joanna sez the green jell-o, but I say The Spectators (careful, I
didn't write The Spectres)!

Rocky fantacized:
>>This is way-cool fantasy and could lead to a whole series. Headcoatees

Down boy! But to be fair to the fairer sex, my vote for another jello
grudge match would be an inter-band struggle between Sluggo and Willy of
The Conquerors (where does Mimi sign up!).

Again, I'm not saying The Devil Dogs - as people - are misogynists.
Rather, that their lyrics can be considered misogynistic. Sure, they're
just pointing to one person in "North Shore Bitch" (one from my home town,
actually, from what Steve told me when they were first playing it), but,
as the rest of my post last night indicated, lyrics are usually considered
misogynistic if they portray women in this way. I don't have the Devil
Dogs' Songbook at hand right now, so I won't be writing my doctoral thesis
on the subject. ;-)

The Raunch Hands were also in question, as I remember. One song they were
well-known for in the early days was actually a cover... A Man Needs A
Woman or something like that. ("A man needs a woman to cook his food, when
he comes home drunk at night," or something along those lines.) They
didn't write it, but their version was pretty definitive.

Either way, as I stated, I think both those bands made some great music.

I also would not buy an LP of The Kings doing obvious covers. It stumps me on
why this talented band would take such a boring road, instead of doing a great
LP of all obscure covers. They are using only 2% of their brainpower.

Looks like my memory's better than I thought; those were exactly the ones
that sprung to mind (but I didn't want to put 'em down without checking.)
That all happened 'cuz Thee Mighty Caesars played the Bad Music Seminar in
NYC in early November of '88 (sponsored by Tim Warren and, maybe, Pete
Ciccone, then of the Rat Bastards, later of the Vacant Lot; also known as
the genius behind Immaculate Concepts graphics stuff). Part of Tim's idea
in bringing the Caesars over was to have Childish produce The Rat Bastards
(and possibly the Double Naught Spies, too, tho' I can't remember that
part for sure).

Unfortunately, the recording sessions produced fights within the RB's and
the band split up. Pete Ciccone formed The Vacant Lot, while Steve & Andy
started The Devil Dogs. Drummer Paul Corio first spent some time with the
DD's, then joined the Vacant Lot later on. (Original RB drummer Eric
Tretbar had left NY to go back to Minneapolis and ended up in the
Spectors.)

I still wish there was some kinda disc out by The Rat Bastards... they
were a helluva band.

So by your logic, playing in a Dire Straits cover band in a Holiday

Maybe so, but remember that you're asking guys in their 50s to come from a
whole bunch of different places up to Boston. Barry's in Nashville, Vern's
in NJ, one of the other guys is in Connecticut and the fourth... well, I
don't remember, but it wasn't Boston. Plus, they probably all have family
that want to see them, so the band is gonna want that covered, too. PLUS,
they've gotta get together and practice, have somewhere to stay, etc.
Basically, it's gotta be worth their while to do this. I don't know what
everybody in the band does for a living at this point, but Barry is a
professional musician and, therefore, expects to be paid like one. The
other guys probably have to take time off work to get this thing together.
Vern is a high school music teacher in NJ (as well as, I believe, doing
some classical stuff outside of work, probably for money).

Sure, I understand that $22.50 seems like a hefty amount to pay for a
garage act, but... well, firstly, I've always thought of The Remains as
much more than that. More importantly, however, I see people more than
willing to fork over $100 to sit up front for Brian Wilson, or $40 - $50
to see Ray Davies in a small place. Why is it out of line, then, to spend
$22.50 for The Remains and The Lost? (Sorry, but I wouldn't give a dime
for The Rising Storm after that '92 show at Maxwells.)

Just some food for thought,

Blair

What?????
So my old flame Deb O'Nair was at the WFMU show and didn't come
over to speak to me...Maybe she spotted me with my newest flame,
Nathalie, was jealous and ran out with tears streaming from her
eyes....Or else, she didn't recognize me with my suave pinch!!!!
(Sigh!!!!!) As for the Brood-Pandoras controversy...I remember in 1986
when I booked both bands a few months apart at Les Foufounes
Electriques. The Brood were just starting out and seemed very shy..They
had a weird singer who then joined a cult or something...The Pandoras
were much more open and nice...Although all Paula would eat was a sack
of potato chips, I did manage to take the other 3 out to dinner....Ah!
the life of a booker...I miss some of it.....(Sigh!) But I remember too
that The Brood invited people backstage to chat, while The Pandora's
manager would have not of that, which pissed off some local gents..But
the band everyone in Montreal loved were The Vertical PIllows! A class
act!!! The Maneaters were fairly scrumptious too! Ah! the good ol,days!

Elmore James...great version with that fat bass line and slide guitar.
Interesting that the Black Crowes gave this title to their first album but

I was going to say one of the Motown girl groups, but then I realized I was
thinking of "Sha La La," the Shirelles song covered by Manfred Mann...

>SHOESHINE BOY (Affair+Lemon Pipers)

The Lemon Pipers version was the original. The song was written by the same
songwriters who wrote "Green Tambourine," Shelley Pinz and Paul Leka. The
same writers also provided "Rice Is Nice," "Stragglin' Behind," "Blueberry
Blue" and "Shoemaker of Leatherware Square," all on the first LP album on
Buddah. I'd bet they also wrote "Jelly Jungle Of Orange Marmalade."

Someone already said the answer, but it was also recorded by Gerry and the

>SICK & TIRED (Ronnie Hawkins+Lyres)

Also recorded twice by the Searchers -- once in 1963, live at the
Star-Club, and in the 70s for one of their Sire albums. There's also a
version by the Dynamic Nu-Tones on "Essential Pebbles."

>SINCE I FELL FOR YOU (Sonics+Young Rascals)

Lenny Welch, 1960

>SITTING ON THE TOP OF THE WORLD (Bobby Hodge+Grateful Dead)

Is this the same song as recorded by Cream? If so, it's Howlin' Wolf.

>SLOOP JOHN B (Beach Boys+Dick Dale)

The song was previously recorded by the Kingston Trio, who got it from the
Weavers. If the credits on the Kingston Trio boxed set are any indication,
Carl Sandburg had a hand in it...

How about "I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better" by the Byrds, "Not In Love With
You" by the Easybeats, "I Just Don't Care" by the D-Men (Fifth Estate),
"Where Were You When I Needed You" by the Grass Roots, "I Can Take Or Leave
Your Loving" by Herman's Hermits (really!), "Steppin' Out" by Paul Revere
and the Raiders, "It's All Over Now" by the Rolling Stones, "I'm Never
Coming Back" by the Searchers, "It's Too Late Now" by the Swinging Blue
Jeans, to name a few?

Why isn't it possible to be in a band that makes money, AND a band that plays
the stuff you really dig? I can't believe it's so hard for you to understand
my point! Possibly you feel like the point I'm making hits home?...Do you
enjoy YOUR job? I'd much rather play Dire Straits for a living than sit behind
a desk! All I'm saying is, in MY opinion, playing ANY kind of music sounds
more fun than working for THE MAN!

I think you don't have to take those lyrics very seriously for those
bands, they're kind of a joke I guess but I can't agree with Blair if he
means "as long as the music's good, who cares". Take "White Power" by
Skrewdriver... great music but I can't enjoy it at all because of the
lyrics. I love all the pre-nazi Skrewdriver stuff but I cannot have fun
listening to their post '82 efforts because of those lyrics & the fact
that they meant them.

I saw him playin' with the Spectors: amazing drummer. What is he doin'
now? And what about that Spectors CD that was supposed to come out years
ago?

Of course it is... *IF* you like music that appeals to a large
enough group of people. And even if you play in such a style, that's still
no guarantee that you'll be successful (no matter how talented you are.)
So, to answer the question again, it *is* possible to be in a band
that plays music you like, BUT for those of us who don't like music that's
currently popular, this seems unlikely.

> I can't believe it's so hard for you to understand

> enjoy YOUR job?
Personally, I don't play in a band. I've thought about it many
times, but I've also been pretty sure that type of music would never go
anywhere.
But, yes, I do enjoy my job. I'm a teacher and, although I put in
an average of 10-11 hours a day, I really do like it (most of the time.)
Would I rather do this than make a living playing music I loved? Well,
quite honestly, I don't have the musical talent necessary to "make it."
Would I rather be able to make a living from my fanzine than do my current
job? Sure... but what I cover isn't going to make me enough money to do
that.

> I'd much rather play Dire Straits for a living than sit behind

AAAAUUUUUGGGHHHH! Not that "working for THE MAN" stuff!
I used to work for a large financial services company, though, so
I understand your point. Even though I didn't like it, though, I would
*rather* do that than play music I hated. I've always despised the idea of
turning something I loved (music) into something I hated. (This is the
prime reason I chose not to work in the music industry.) I always thought
of my old job as a means to an end... it was what allowed me to buy
records, go out 5-6 nights a week (I was in my early-mid 20s and having a
grand old time of it) to see rock'n'roll bands, and live in one place,
rather than having to be constantly on the road.
One of the down sides to being in a band is that you have to spend
your nights playing, which means you miss a ton of great bands that you
might otherwise want to see.
The idea of being in a band that plays music I hate and having to
miss music I love as a result is repulsive.
Same goes for writing... I've often thought about trying to get
some magazines/newspapers to let me write for them. Then I've taken a look
at what they cover and realized I couldn't write exactly what *I* wanted.

Well, after dropping my video cam...I MEAN, I think the Brood might have
the strength advantage, however, the Pandoras had those high-heeled shoes,
which can be lethal. I call it a draw.

As to whose music I prefer, I wish I had a Brood LP, but they didn't bring
any to FuzzFest '98 (boo hoo!). Time to go looking. I liked Stop
Pretending, however, it did not inveigle me to find more of their work.

Small aside: There was a minor gripe about men not dancing when the women
were the band, however, I do recall a certain RW dancing merrily to the
Brood during FuzzFest. I cannot say who it was, but his name rhymes with
Pritchard Gourd.

See my earlier posts on the concept of "selling out". I just don't have
the time to type all that out again.

That's not what I mean at all. I was referring to the bands in
question. They made music that I consider great and I happen to *know*
they aren't truly preaching misogyny. Since I've known those guys for
years, I also happen to know they are not misogynists. It's possible that
other people who just heard one or two songs by them *might* take them to
be such.

 Take "White Power" by

As I think we all agree... the Devil Dogs/Raunch Hands did *not*
mean their misogynistic stuff.

Ah, yes! The-Pudendum-That-Walketh-Like-a-Man, who heard us and before he
got to "Hello" or "Hi, my name is Glans" or some such said, "Y'all think
about investing in a tuner?" Now with people skills like that, he will
probably not succeed on Karma reasons alone. One of the members of his
band walked past, head bobbing in enjoyment. I will take that as well as a
"Hello".

Sorry, I don't deal too well with rude and old Puddy was. I could have
made a crack about playing in Mixolydian mode, or I could have taken him
literally and said something along the lines of "Isn't it just as important
to get the mechanics of the song and tune afterwards (although some think I
take too long to tune :^)? However, I just laughed politely and left the
other feelings at the feet of Jesus. Folks like the Pudster merely make me
strum harder and sing more heartily. So, in a rather twisted way, thanks
are due him.

As for PTW LAM, he might know good music if it hit him in the face, but
he'd never play it. Why don't we put in the gelatinous pit of horrors with
the Brood and the remaining Pandoras and hope HE doesn't come out!

Ga-RAGE! (with a long "a" on the second syllable),

If this is "There is Something On Your Mind", then the original is by Big
Jay McNeely (vocals by Little Sonny?). Marchan had the biggest hit with it.

> Stagger Lee (Don & the Goodtimes+Isley brothers)

Mississippi John Hurt has the oldest version that I know of, Price had a
big hit with it. Archibald also recorded it. Read "Mystery Train" by
Greil Marcus for an interesting history of this song.

Glenda Collins is the original, I believe.

The Sentinals, I believe. If this is the song I am thinking of, all I have
to say is, someone covered it?
