Since you asked, I work as a consulting actuary. I work for a large
firm, but have a fair amount of autonomy. I'm in the office 35-40
hours a week on average, and actually work about 15-30 of those. The
rest of the time I spend either butting heads with the idiots on this
list (warning! JOKE!) or hitting the delete key. I also can listen to
music should I choose. (Right now, I'm digging a tape I made of
Nederbeit 45s for those keeping score at home).

That allows the band to operate in a vacuum, and then we can play
exactly what we like and look exactly how we like, whether anyone
likes us or not. If the stars align, and in the wake of the next
Austin Powers movie (The Spy who Shagged Me), there's a box set
release called Dutch Nederbeit Loons (Loons trademark licensed from
Satx/Chilson and Associates) on vinyl, creating an instant and
unquenchable desire for our brand of R&B delinquency (live and on
vinyl only, cuz that's what we like), then so be it! Maybe THEN we'll
get that Little Kings sponsorship! In the meantime, I'll gladly
continue working on a Tsing-Tsang...

Subject: Anti - Valentine's Day picks

OK, I was gonna show a little restraint and not use this thread as yet
another excuse for a lengthy post about country music, but since the topic
refuses to die and all my self-control has melted away, I'd suggest:

* Maddox Bros & Rose - Ugly & Slouchy. Suggested method of keeping your
girlfriend true: get a hideously ugly girlfriend so the other guys won't
even be slightly tempted to check out the goodies.

* Charlie Walker - I Wouldn't Take Her to A Dogfight. Extremely hateful
lyrics.......e.g. "I wouldn't take her to a dogfight / Not even if she had a
chance to win." A fine companion piece to Ugly and Slouchy.

* Charlie Walker - Tell Her Lies and Feed Her Candy. Here, the father of
a young lady that Charlie wants to court advises Charlie to "Tell her lies
and feed her candy....." Amazing. Also recorded by Porter Wagoner.

* Willie Nelson - I Just Can't Let You Say Goodbye - guy strangles
girlfriend to prevent her from leaving him. Sample lyric: "The flesh around
your throat is pale / Indented by my fingernails." Minor country hit around
1965 or so. Later covered by Porter Wagoner. Also re-recorded on an album
Willie put out last year titled Teatro.

* Johnny Paycheck - (Pardon Me) I've Got Someone to Kill - title really
says it all. Cheating spouse drives hubby to homicidal rage.

* Wynn Stewart - I'm Gonna Kill You - festive toe-tapper about cheating
spouse driving hubby to, you guessed it, a homicidal rage.

* Bill Anderson - The First Mrs. Jones - wife leaves husband who tracks
her down and shoots her. Sample lyric: "I dug and dug for hours / And then
I planted flowers / On top of the 1st Mrs. Jones." Also recorded by Porter
Wagoner.

and speaking of PW.....

* Porter Wagoner - The Cold Hard Facts of Life - superb chilling account
of cuckolded husband slicing up wife and her lover. Written by Bill
Anderson, I guy I'd rather not get on the wrong side of, despite the fact
that he looks so goofy and harmless....Also recorded by Freddie Hart, Ferlin
Husky, Johnny Darrell, Mel McDaniel, and T. Tex Edwards. A true
classic......

*  Porter Wagoner  -  The Snakes Crawl At Night - here's a surprise....a
cheating wife drives her husband into a homicidal rage. Also recorded by
Charlie Pride.

* Freddie Hart - The Neon and The Rain. See description for Snakes Crawl
At Night, etc. Sample lyric: "As I sit beneath the steering wheel, a gun in
my right hand / I watch the woman I married keep a date with another man."

* Autry Inman - Six Rounds of Love & Hate. More cheating and killing.

* Bobby Wright - Upstairs In the Bedroom. Guess what? More cheating and
killing. Bet you didn't see THAT coming.

* Waylon Jennings - Julie - a young wife drives her husband mad with
her extra-marital affairs. In Waylon's version, the b-side of one of his
hits from 1966 or so, the husband is telling the story from the confines of
a straight-jacket after he is institutionalized following a complete
emotional breakdown.....shades of the Rubber Room. There is no mention of
violence in Waylon's original, but when Porter Wagoner recorded it, he
altered the storyline slightly, creating a scenario where he's waiting
behind the door for Julie & her boyfriend to come home. In his hand is a
gun with three bullets, one for each of them.

And, lest anyone get the impression I listen to nothing but country music:

* Louis Jordan - Gal, You Need a Whippin' .

OK, a couple of those (like the Jordan cut) are early to mid-1950's and I
think the original post asked about mid 60's tunes and all of the rest
pretty much fit the mold, with an exception or two.

Anyone know the source of this song. It's definitely NOT Percy Sledge's
oft-played soul ballad. It's a different song entirely.

Heck, I always thought that one was an original due to the fact that,
philosophically, it seemed to fit in quite well with Raunch Hands' songs
like Spit It On The Floor from the very early days. THAT wasn't a cover
too, was it?

You can actually hear this at the Junk Radio archive, Sept. 1997.
http://www.junkradio.com and follow the archive link, under Boudoir de la
Musique (even though I think this was recorded before the 60's).

A similar song in theme is, "If You Want to be Happy" by Jimmy Soul.

Is this the original version of the song with the same title covered by
Tex Edwards on his LP "Out on parole"?
And speaking about Tex Edwards, make sure to check out his punk stuff with
the Nervebreakers too, if you haven't already done so!

Sorry I'm a day late and a $ short with info, I get the digest.
Anyways, as is obvious from one listening, Ry Cooder's slide work and the
slow pacing dominate the single version. Plus the middle part lets Mick
do his flourescent light dance in the movie. The Metamorphosis version
(and another mix I have on a boot CD) are not as interesting. It's
basically Keith thriving on the riff at midtempo (not that there's
anything wrong with that), the lyrics are run through quickly with no time
for emphasis, and there's no middle part.
It's no "Much rather be with the boys".

Same here. Ironically enough, I'm betting they recorded it for
commercial reasons, to attract buyers who aren't as heavily into obscure
60s material as most of the people on this list. Perhaps some people
that got their first exposure to garage music via the Nuggets boxed set
are interested in hearing a "contemporary" band's take on some
recognizable songs and might pick it up to check them out. I think it
was a mistake also.

I agree with Ton and Fred and Dave on this one. For a band who've
been knocking it out for so long, a few originals or 'obscuro' covers
ala the first LP wouldn't go amiss. The last Sundazed single was great,
y'know the original cut. Howevver, the way the Kings have lept back onto
the garage scene is OTT. Are they becoming some kinda K-Tel garage hits
combo or what? The band are decent but I'd far rather hear the originals
they're covering.

Wow. When I was living 'round Detroit I wondered why nobody outside
the Motor City liked the VPs as much as I did. They had good nights
and bad, but at their best they were a terrific band. The b-side of
Rob Tyner-produced single "Jump Back/R.U.N." is just killer, with a
crazed wah-wah sound that was never quite reproduced at their shows
because they lost the wah pedal and it was kinda tricky to play the
chords and wiggle the wah at the same time (my old housemate, a
former VP boyfriend, actually wiggled the wah during the session).

OK, for those of you who never heard the single, this is a little
more information than you needed...

Anyway, 3/4 of the band -- Paula (guitar), Dana (bass) and Monic
(drums) -- regrouped as The Motor Dolls and were gigging around
Detroit as recently as 97-98 (?) but friends have told me their "new
sound" is somewhat analogous to the Pandoras egregious "new sound"
circa that EP. I haven't had the chance to listen for myself, but
I'd be surprised if the Motor Dolls' stuff didn't have at least a
touch of the old VP fire.

So, Denis, thanks for sharing...

This reminds me of a recent Neko Case 45... I think it's called Make Your
Bed. The lyric is "Make your bed the river, young girl." Why? Well,
basically, the narrator had her boyfriend stolen by the girl in question
and she's come back to throw the two of 'em out of the land of the living.
Done in a beautifully cold country fashion. Neko is one of my absolute
favorite current artists, country or otherwise.

Blair, et.al.
You do make a good point about the price of the Remains show (which I
gladly shelled out, btw, on Saturday) having to make it worthwhile for
these guys.
Being a struggling musician myself, and having been paid sums like $7 for a
show, I also love it when my group makes $500 (which don't pay the bills,
it's band fund.) So, I fully appreciate bands being compensated their
worth.
I was pointing out the irony of seeing "protopunk" and the inherent meaning
of such words, and paying more for that show than I have any in about 5
years.
And to this tiresome jello thread, and as to who would win?
Ahhh, probably me and some of my friends!

P-S: anybody who is going, we should all meet up at "halftime" or
something, or before or after the show!

Has anyone here bought the new Peruvian garage CD called "Sons Of Yma" ?
I've had it for a few weeks but I haven't had a chance to play it yet. I also
haven't played the new Planetary Pebbles Vol 3 Cd yet. How are these? (The new
"Sabre Records Story" from Get Hip is well worth buying.)
I did play the 4 new Sundazed singles, all worth buying. (Bad Roads/Ides
Of March/Sir Winston and The Commons/Twentieth Century Zoo) I still haven't
received the new Magicians compilation from Sundazed, though.

How 'bout during The Rising Storm? (I'm only half-joking.)

But after would probably be great. Bostonites, please suggest some places
to hang out post-show!

another installment in Rev Joe Longones countdown of the top 100 Rock 'n'

"Life in the Foodchain".
BTW, we are switching web hosting companies over the next two weeks,
hopefully the transition will be smooth, but if Murphy's Law makes a ruling
we may have a few days when we may be offline. Also for those who asked, we
will be archiving much of Rev Joe's series, but we only have a limited
amount of space on our server so I'm not sure if we will get it all on at
one time.

Well, you didn't mention Converse, but I just ordered a pair of
