Not sure if anyone recorded it earlier or not, but I believe I've
got some American Folklore books at home with the tale of Stagger Lee. I
believe this is yet another one by Trad. (Also, it may also be referred
to in folklore - I think - as Stackalee.)

Since I'm at work right now, I can't go check... Is this the same
tune as The Misanthropes did on their Get Hip 45 a decade or so back?
(That one had one of the absolute wildest guitar intros I've ever heard,
leading into a killer track. Easily one of the best 45s the label ever
released.)

Hey Blair...were the Rising Storms really that awful? I've never seen them play
but I know that Aram Heller is now playing with them (Aram is the head of
Stanton Park Records, keeps the Arf! Arf! and Get Hip Websites running, and
wrote the cool book "Till The Stroke Of Dawn", about '60's New England
bands/singles) so hopefully he can get them back to playing their garage roots.
I don't know if he played with them in '92 when you last saw them but, if not,
maybe he can right the ship. I would imagine he would know the type of music
that an audience for a Remains/Lost double bill wants to hear. Please let me
know after the show. Either way, I'm sure the Remains and the Lost will be
worth the price of admission!

That Trad. guy again. This song goes waaaaaay back. Also called
Stagolee and Stack O'Lee. Mississippi John Hurt did a version in 1929,
but it's been traced back as far as 1880. Lloyd Price had a big hit
version in the late 50's. This is supposed to be a true story.

Blind Willie McTell

Either Trad. or Leadbelly, take your pick. A "skewbald" is a brown and
white horse. Again, this is supposed to a true story! According to
SING OUT, Stewball is based on a race that took place in Ireland in
1873. Uhh, yeah.

Yes, and it concludes "I'm here to waste my life away, down in this dirty
old cell, because I murdered that Knoxville Girl, the girl I loved so
well". (!) It's pretty psycho, all right. The Louvins are fantastic -

Billy declares Checkmate, they argue for a moment, pick some wildflowers

Could this be on a comp called "Follow (or chase?) that Monster, vol.2"?
It has some great american 60's garage tracks on it and a couple of
Mummies tracks. I'm sure it features a version of "Hey Gyp" which might be
by the Knights of Day but I can't verify it now either...
Also, in relation to the Anti-Valentine show, isn't there a song in one
of the Teenage Shutdowns (by the Actioneers?) called "No one wants me"?

One more song appropriate for this show could be the demented "Get Away

Plastic Inevitable vol.1 as well as in a couple of compilations with 60's
stuff from Greece ("Greek Garage Bands of the 60's" and "Six Miles from
the Cage"). Hateful lyrics that will make you smile (or even laugh!).

Speaking of Country murder tunes, Rudi Protrudi (the singer for the Fuzztones)
put out a solo record a few years back (very rare-on a German label), and does
a whole bunc of murder classics, including one he wrote called "Hotter Than
She's Ever Been". Sample lyrics: "Parked a block away from home and, walkin'
there I saw my best friend's car in our driveway. To the bedroom window I
crept, lookin' in, well I wept, 'cause she was makin' love to him. Ran back to
the car to get a can of gasoline and poured it around the trailer then. Lit a
match in anger, never mind the danger, stood and watched as she melted into
him"

If this is the song I'm thinking of it's covered by a band called the
Vandalias, from Minnesota I think (Ron?). It's on an album called
"Buzzbomb," from the usually reliable (for pop fans) Big Deal label. I got
the album because I liked "Funky Monkey Baby," but I really didn't care for
anything else on there.

As it turns out that's the album I was listening to when your e-mail
arrived! You should move it to the top of your pile, it's solid all the
way through. Stand-outs include a couple tunes by Los Saicos - sort of
the Trashmen of Peru - the psychedelic effects-laden instros of Los
Holy's, a number of well-chosen covers like "I Need Somebody" (? & the
Mysterions) and "No No No No" (The Sorrows), and a few cool originals
from the likes of The Same People and Los Yorks. A couple tracks have
already been reissued ("Justo A Mi Gusto" by Los Yorks, "Tirando Dedo"
by Los Shains, Traffic Sound's cover of Iron Butterfly's "You Can't
Win"). There are 7 bonus tracks on the CD, but almost all are
instrumentals, so vinyl-lovers won't miss out on the essential stuff.
There's a fair amount of crackle transferred from the original 45s in
some places, but overall it sounds pretty good.

Tony, it's called "Sons of Yma" because the most successful Peruvian
artist of the time (or immediately prior to the mid-60's, anyway) was
Yma Sumac. I don't know who put it out, it's on the Yma label.

On Saturday I'm leaving for a week in Sao Paulo. I've heard a lot of
bands from other South American countries, but outside of Os Mutantes
and a couple psych acts on Love Peace & Poetry, I don't know anything
about the Brazilian 60's scene. Anyone know of any bands I should be
on the lookout for? Hopefully Sao Paulo is close enough to Uruguay that
Los Shakers reissues will be plentiful!

Subject: C. Kings and well-known covers

I've been working on an interview with Chesterfield Kings' bassist Andy
Babiuk for the next issue of The Teen Scene. Last night I asked him the
question that had been plaguing many in Bomp-land recently: why the
well-known covers?

Well, basically, the band finally has its own studio and complete control
over what they do. So they decided to record some of their favorite songs;
nothing more than that. In essence, Andy was telling me that it wasn't any
sort of conscious decision; rather, it was just the group having some fun.

Look for more in the next Teen Scene, due... uh... ummmm... well, there've
been a ton of hold-ups (some due to other contributors, but just as many
'cuz my job has taken a huge bite out of my life of late). I'm hoping for
mid-April as the late date. Apologies to those who deserve them (you know
who you are). But this one'll have some good stuff; I promise. (Just ask
Steve Coleman, who handed over some very cool interviews, with pics to
match.) If all goes well, there might even be actual artwork on the cover.

Hey, I also happen to know a lot of fish that cant live without their
bicycles. In fact bicycles are as important to them as a sense of humour.
And if the band wails I dont give a rats bum what the lyrics are,
misogynist, sexist or otherwise - cross reference my anti valentines day

I can't wait to see this playlist.

It's simply titled "I Don't Care" off of the LP "Rocket To Russia", which
was released in 1978, well within the rules such as they may be and yet again
close enough for government work.

How come I haven't heard anybody talkin' about The Neatbeats? Cool beat
stuff outta Japan. According to the promo stuff from Get Hip (for their
Far & Near LP/CD) these guys are all in their early 20s and opened for the
Kaisers on their Japanese tour. I can see how it would've made a great
bill, 'cuz these guys play stuff in the same vein, albeit with a rougher
production. I'm really enjoying this.

(Also looking forward to listening to the Link Protrudi & the Jaymen disc,
which comps two of the LPs, I think.)

I don't think he posted about it, but Pat S. Knurling raved about 'em to me

And I just got my hands on the Dr. Explosion CD. Tons of great garage

Subject: Re: Chesterfield Kings new album

What about someone like me, who's never heard anything of the Chesterfield
Kings? I've had the chance to buy their LPs, but am usually wary of
post-'60s so-called "garage bands." These guys seem to be among the most
authentic of the bunch, however, judging from what they've already covered
and what I've read about them. So I've ordered the new CD, and expect to
enjoy it, since I am not familiar enough with the Kings to know if they
have done better or worse.

I am a big fan of covers, of well-known songs and obscure nuggets alike. If
a so-called "modern garage band" does some covers of stuff I'm familiar
with, I can usually guess whether their style fits my tastes anyway. I'd
rather be introduced to the Chesterfield Kings with an album of "common"
covers than a bunch of stuff I don't know.

On a related note, although there's less of a scene for modern Merseybeat
than the CK's brand of music, I got into the Kaisers mostly because of
their choice of covers. While they aren't garage classics, "Some Other
Guy," "What'd I Say" and "Hippy Hippy Shake" are as "common" beat covers as
"Little Girl," "1-2-5," and "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White" are
well-covered garage songs. And while the Kaisers moved 10 steps forward by
releasing an album with 90% original material, that doesn't mean following
it up with an all-covers "classics" album would be a bad career move. Of
course the Chesterfield Kings have about 15 years up on the Kaisers, so
maybe the expectations _would_ be higher.

I guess I can sum it up in one question: While "Where The Action Is" is a
"common covers" album, is it a _bad_ covers album, as covers albums go? In
other words, is it "Beau Brummels '66" or "The Standells - Hot Ones"?
