Hi Hitomi:

It's sung in English. You can get it through the label Big Deal
(www.bigdeal.com) or through online distributors like Not Lame
(www.notlame.com). The Vandalias are actually one guy playing and singing
all the parts - BUZZBOMB is his/their second release.

I've had this Neatbeats record for a while now. It's good stuff. But I was
really pleasantly surprised at how good the Link Protrudi and The Raymen CD
is. It's real tough sounding Link Wray-style instros. This guy was doing this
type sound well before the mid-90's instro craze hit, and he had an authentic
sound. Well worth picking up! Too bad some will pass on it cause it's Rudi
Protrudi.

I just played the Peruvian garage CD, "Sons Of Yma" and I must agree that it's
mostly aces! (among the originals, there are wild Spanish versions of
Trashmens"King Of The Surf", Mysterians"I Need Somebody", Paul Revere"Just
Like Me", Standells"What Have I Got Of My Own", Merry Dragons"Universal
Vagrant" as well as some others.)Well worth the low list price that is asked
for the 25 track CD.

I'm not sure who put this out, but it does mention that the transfers were
done on a billion dollar turntable with a million dollar mono cartridge. So
with that evidence, could it be the work of Greg Shaw?

I often wonder if I would've gotten into the garage scene if I hadn't
already been into Mersey-styled stuff. Even in junior high/high school
(late 70s/early 80s) I was into the early Beatles and things of that ilk.
When in '82 or so I discovered that a guy I knew from junior high had a
band that played this kinda thing (The Mosquitos), I flipped out. In the
early days, that's what The Mosquitos were about... they were doing Some
Other Guy, The Hippy Hippy Shake, Let's Stomp, etc. Over time they also did
songs by The Denisons (a fantastic "Be My Girl" with excellent vocal
arrangements) and The Merseybeats, among others.

The Mosquitos eventually also started doing Good Guys as time went on,
along with many originals, mostly in the 60s-influenced pop mold, although
there were also some stompers and garage growlers involved ("Darn Well" is
still one of my favorite songs of the 80s.)

My point is that I, too, love hearing Beat stuff. That's why I'm always
thrilled to see The Kaisers, or hear the Neatbeats' disc, or get a new King
Normals 45.

To quote The Spectors...

That's *Jaymen,* Pete! (Anyone know if this was 'cuz Michael Jay was in the
band? Seems likely.)

I remember a Link Protrudi & the Jaymen show at the Southern Funk Cafe on
42nd St. between 8th & 9th in the Summer of '86 or so. (I think The A-Bones
were also on the bill.) Simply put, it was phenomenal. They were like
nobody else on the scene at the time. There'd been a couple instro outfits
playing (most notably The Tidal Waves), but that was all surf. Here came
Rudi belting out wild Link Wray style material and blowing everyone out of
the water.

Seems to me I've seen a ton of different versions (just do a search on
Stagger Lee...), but they all basically agree that Stagger Lee shot Billy
after an argument over gambling. I've listed a couple sets of lyrics I
found in a quick search below, but I'm pretty sure that there's a much
longer story involved. If I can dig up my American Folklore books, I'll
print out what I find.

Blair

Here's one set of lyrics...
- ---
Stagger Lee

1948, Xmas eve, with a full moon over town
Stagger Lee shot Billy DeLions
And he blew that poor boy down.
Do you know what he shot him for?
What do you make of that?
Cause Billy DeLions threw the lucky dice
Won Stagger Lee's Stetson hat.

Bayo, Bayo, tell me how can this be?
You arrest the girls for turning tricks
But you're scared of Stagger Lee.
Stagger Lee is a madman and he shot my Billy D.
Bayo go get him or give the job to me.

Delia DeLions, dear sweet Delia-D
How the hell can I arrest him? He's twice as big as me.
Well don't ask me to go downtown, I won't come back alive [no more].
Not only is that mother big but he packs a .45 [four].

Bayo, Delia said, just give me a gun
he shot my Billy dead now I'm gonna see him hung.
She went into the DeLion's club through Billy DeLions blood
Stepped up to Stagger Lee at the bar,
Said, "Buy me a gin fizz, love."

As Stagger Lee lit a cigarette she shot him in the balls
Blew the smoke off her revolver, had him dragged to city hall
Bayo, Bayo, see you hang him high
He shot my Billy dead and now he's got to die.

Delia went a walking down on Singapore Street
A three-piece band on the corner played "Near My God to Thee"
But Delia whistled a different tune, what tune could it be?

The song that woman sung was "Look Out Stagger Lee".
The song that Delia sung was "Look Out Stagger Lee".
- ---

Here's another:
- ---
I WAS STANDIN' ON A CORNER
WHEN I HEARD MY BULLDOG BARK
HE WAS BARKIN' AT THE TWO MEN
WHO WERE GAMBLIN' IN THE DARK

NOW IT WAS STAGGER LEE AND BILLY
TWO MEN WHO GAMBLE LATE
STAGGER LEE THREW A SEVEN
BILLY SWORE THAT HE THREW EIGHT

NOW STAGGER LEE HE TOLD BILLY
"I CAN'T LET YOU GO WITH THAT
YOU DONE WON ALL MY MONEY
AND MY BRAND NEW STETSON HAT"

SO, STAGGER LEE HE WENT HOME
AND HE GOT HIS FORTY-FOUR
HE SAID, "I'M GOIN TO THE BAR ROOM
JUST TO PAY THAT DEBT I OWE"

STAGGER LEE WENT TO THE BAR ROOM
AND HE STOOD ACROSS THE BAR ROOM FLOOR
HE SAID, "NOW NOBODY MOVE"
AND HE PULLED HIS FORTY-FOUR

"STAGGER LEE", CRIED BILLY
"OH PLEASE DON'T TAKE MY LIFE
I'VE GOT THREE LITTLE CHILDREN
AND A VERY SICKLY WIFE"

WELL, STAGGER LEE, HE SHOT BILLY,
HE SHOT THAT POOR BOY SO BAD
THE BULLET WENT THROUGH BILLY
AND IT BROKE THE BARTENDERS GLASS
OOH! STAGGER LEE

Phantom Surfers did "Yozora no Hoshi" by Kayama Yuzo in
"The Great Surf Crash of 97'". A Belgian band called the

These two are sung in Japanese. Pretty cool, I witnessed

The Neatbeats are fantastic! Previous EPs prove equally brilliant to

According to the Fleshtones website they're playing the Tune Inn in New

That last version of Stagger Lee that Blair wrote looks like the one that
Lloyd Price had a hit with (if you add the opening lines "The night was
dark and the moon was yellow and the leaves came tumbling down" or
something like that). There's a version called "Stack-O-Lee" by Archibald
on the first Chicken Shack Boogie cd (available through Norton - great r&b
comp). In that version Stack-O-Lee gets shot by somebody (sounds like
Stagger Lee - it's kind of confusing because I think he then tells his
mother he's been shot by a "police .44") But anyway he dies and goes to see
the devil... Great piano in this version!

Just wanted to tell all my beloved and faithfull Internet listeners that
I WILL be doing my show tonight! Again, sorry to those who listened last
week!! I had pre-taped the show, but some moron decided to pre-tape his
show too and used my tape!! I just hope people don't start thinking I've
stopped doing the show.

Dans le Garage is the place to hear only the best of French Beat, yéyé
and girl groups, amongst other goodies!

I just want to know one thing...all you other groovy radio hosts can
answer this: In the three years I've done this show, practically NOBODY
has ever called! I sware, the calls I get are either wrong numbers, or
people who want to hear the Beastie Boys. When some other person fills
in, the whole city calls up to tell them the show is great! (Except for
Victor...nobody dared calling him!!) I've been told it's because I'm a
girl and it's intimidating. However, this isn't true because Erin "go-go
girl" Truscott apparently dee-jayed this past weekend and had guys
panting on the phone!! Dans le Garage is apparently the station's most
popular radio show and is the 2nd most popular radio show amongst all of
the province's College Radio staions (the first one beeing Flipped-Out's
Subterranean Jungle, the world's greatest garage radio show!), so this
is a mystery to me! I remember when somebody called and asked for the
Hollies 3 months ago...I almost asked him to marry me!!!

I don't rely on calls, but it is nice when people let you know they
actually LIKE what you play, or give you some encouragement!

All you dj's, what are your thougts on this?

Bompsters,

Gaven and I have decided that finding a drummer with a claw for a hand
might be a little tough. Perhaps readers will know of anybody with a bad
case of arthritis or something like that.

Breaking news is we've decided on the name "The Bavarians". We will do
all German versions of Barbarians songs except we will sing them in
English.

Can anybody tell me how to play an 'E' chord?...Thanks a bunch

James B.

Wow, what a brilliant assessment! Why are you on this list if C&W is so far
superior? THIS is what I meant earlier by elitist snobs on this list! Why the
hell can't they BOTH be great forms of music? Would it be possible for someone
to actually enjoy more than ONE kind of music and not be considered a traitor
by the music nazis? GROW UP!

Oh yeah... One day I was listening to my mom's cassette of Razor & Tie's
"When I Stop Dreaming: Best Of The Louvin Brothers." I was really liking
their lyrics and harmonies, on songs like the title track and "I Don't
Believe You've Met My Baby," when I came across this song about some girl
begging for mercy as some guy beats her with a stick until the ground is
soaked red with her blood. I haven't been able to listen to that tape
since... :)

I don't know if this goes with the topic covered here, but nobody's
mentioned "He's Waitin'" by the Sonics, where he tells his cheating girl
that Satan found out about her running around, and warns her "it's too
late, you lied, now you will fry..." Long about way of telling her to "go
to hell."

Fred Nightengale was a pseudonym for British songwriter/producer Tony
Hatch, who also co-wrote the Vogues "You're The One" with Petula Clark. I
think he also put out some solo pop records...pretty much MOR...

bodes pretty well right there). Let's all take a deep breath and relax.

No, I thank the Crawdaddys and my older sister that dated one of the Lyrics in
highschool. Maybe all her incessant record playing when I was a tike somehow
brainwashed the soundz into my brain. Tony

some of my 2 cents. Pandoras were great at the start, I saw them loads of
times with the various lineups. I even was fortunate to see Paula in an
earlier group called the Direct hits. I never even bothered seeing them when
they went for the harder metal edge sounding stuff. Although the video was
hilarious! I was good friend with Melanie at the time, and she even said,
"Tony, you're gonna hate it". Ha!
I never dug the Fuzztones that much, some of their singles were cool as
well as some of their earlier gigs, but to me they were a bit too "cartoon
garage" for me.
I preferred the acts like the Kings or Hearts that tried to recreate the 60's
look and sound on stage and vinyl. While some could argue that recreating a
60's look and sound to the tee is cartoon as well, to me it was the best!!
Hopefully everyone understands what I mean by that. Don't mean to downplay
anyone, it's just an opinion.

Though I agree with you somewhat (well, maybe not at all- I feel the
lyrics are as important as the music), I think Kopper made some pretty
good points in his post the other day, that you can't say "I like all
black folk, except for those two niggers that live upstairs" and not be
considered racist. There's a big difference between "No Good Woman" and
"Smell The Glove", hopefully most people on this list can recognize that.
I'm not going to say where to draw the line, the listener has to decide
for himself.
Most 60s "punk" songs were about cheating or wayward girlfriends, and
most of peoples Valentine's Day postings reflected this. I don't think
we need to get Tipper Gore involved in this, but hopefully people listen
with open ears.
It also comes down to whether or not you feel bands like the Avengers
were joking or not in their "Be A Caveman" song. Something about the
music seems pretty tongue-in-cheek.

Dan

stuff that to enthusiasts would be "obscure"(just because for the past
12 years this stuff was pretty much relegated to the realms of the
obscurantists)
and wont even know it!
So----which would you rather root for?-the Kings' (the inverse-)--old
band---who know EXACTLY what the're doing (and influenced half the
people with bands that complain about them on the lists )+Common covers

from it and decided to dress-up for weekends like "those guys" in the
liner-note pictures/austin powers-yet continue to act as though they are
still in a pearl jam/britpop group....and by chance if they find
themselves at a reasonably cool gig-and notice that the people there are
slightly older and dont look like they shop @Le Chateau or act like
the're in a mtv/much video...the say-ug-nerds and are confused by the
fact thet the music is really cool---they have no conception that this
"scene" has existed for years and will continue to exist despite the
mainstreams' flirtation with it!.... the Kings get my vote.(For what
it's worth I LOVED "dont open till doomsday, anyways!!)

Dont get me wrong tho'----i'd still like to hear the Kings do their take
of some different, more obscure stuff---and have it live up to
everybodys expectations, but ...I'm sure they will put out ANOTHER
ALBUM----it's not like this is their Only one (is it?) They always did
their own thing regardless of anybody else anyways !
You've got to Respect that!
(whew!)
P.S---just as an example of modern day weirdness...I was
Djing@kaleidoscope
when Jarvis Cocker---from the band PULP (who were in toronto that
weekend) comes and requests The Ugly Ducklings! and Love!--------weird!
