got the album because I liked "Funky Monkey Baby," but I really didn't
care for anything else on there.

REALLY?? Wow - it's so funny how different people react to music.
Buzzbomb was one of my favorite 1998 releases and I think it's an
incredible mix of power pop and rock and roll energy. The songwriting on
that CD is absolutely brilliant from beginning to end, with the only weak
tune being the live version of Funky Monkey Baby. It's out of place on
this CD and interrupts the flow of an otherwise perfect album. I skip
over that tune every time and that works great. For some reason, the
originals on Buzzbomb click with me perfectly, especially Big Red
Catalina and Say I'm Sorry. I'd recommend it highly. If anyone listens
to it three times, I can't say how they wouldn't be hooked. I suppose
that's what makes the world go 'round...

Be seeing you,
Bill

Sylvain,

I think I mentioned to you before that I had a mid/late-80's album by the
Public Vein. Not very listenable attempt at noisy garage. May have used
an organ, but I don't think it helped much. Then again, maybe they're

The origianl version appares on Let's em have it. ( I asisted to write

'60s Peru band Lod Doltons coverd "Yozora no Hoshi" , in Japanese

For the first 6 months or so of "Coffee & Smokes", I got no calls. Now I
average 2-3 calls a show. I've had as many as 8 or 9 when the show has run
over several times due to one of the rotating hosts on the show which follows
mine forgets her turn at the mike. I have several regulars who call every
couple of weeks or so, as well as local luminaries who have called up here and
there to give me a pat on the back. I often get calls for mainstream stuff
that isn't bad but you can hear 1,000,000,000,000 times a day on commercial
radio.
I've given away a few CDs as well as movie passes. I almost never give away
club tickets because when you have a show on Saturday morning, the tix are
given away by then, but when they're available, I don't have any problem
having at least one listener try to claim them. My guess as to the size of my
audience, knowing full well that I'm probably pipe dreaming, I reckon falls
somewhere around 125 or so, mebbe 150 tops.
While I was in college doing radio in the early 80s, I did an overnight
show for several years. Folks who were as drunk as I was would call and try
to invite themselves over fairly often. Sometimes I'd put 'em on the air and
let 'em ramble. Sometinmes I'd let 'em come over to the studio. I'm surprised
I'm still alive.

>I sware, the calls I get are either wrong numbers, or

HA! I had a local rock (read: Boston) show at my old station a few years
back which was preceeded by a rap/hip-hop show. I constantly got requests for
"shout-outs" to varoius folks at "The Point", a nearby housing project. I'd
ask if they knew what I was playing at that moment and they couldn't answer
me.

 > Dans le Garage is apparently the station's most
> popular radio show and is the 2nd most popular radio show amongst all of

I don't know how popular my show is. I imagine it will be one of the most
popular at 'MFO when the RealAudio setup finally is hooked up. Coffee 'n'
Smokes one of only half a dozen shows out of 75 or so with its own mailbox, so
I guess it's kinda popular on its own.

I like what you play, I listen every week. I often plug the web shows when
plugging my own site which has the links to them.

Now I average 2-3 calls a show.

For the first 2 years, I got a lot of calls and regular listeners would
phone in every week. I believe my show has become to specialised. I
stopped giving in to requests I don't want to play anymore, like
Reverend Horton Heat or Man or Astroman?, etc. I know people listen and
still like the show, I think they just don't necessarily know what I
play. And since I live in Montréal, the most popular segment of the show
is the French beat, but even then, the requests I get are just too
obvious. I know people just wanna hear the classics, but I don't play
them.

Of course tonight, I got requests for Elvis Presley, the band Telephone,
Jimmy Hendrix and Green Day!

Thank you! I know more my Internet listeners than the Montréal ones!

On guitar- 6 string open, 2nd fret 4 & 5, 1st fret 3rd, 1 & 2 open.
On keyboard, hit the white key immediately after the two blacks in a row,
then go up a major third, then a minor third after that.
On a punk song, just try to hold down the fifth string at the 2nd fret
without touching the 6th string, and sound both together.
Of course an E-minor chord is different.

Dan

Oh- and on harmonica, blow in holes 1,2,and 3, or 4, 5 and 6, or 7,8 and
9 on an E-harp, or better yet, draw on holes 2, 3 and 4 on an A-harp.

With all this talk of country and western music this week I'm surprised noboby's
mentioned The Sadies. Well, Blair *did* mention Neko Case and they were her backup band
for a spell, but yeah... Toronto's The Sadies are the kings of country Killin' Songs.
Most of their set and their cool album is made up of twangy surf/country/Rock & Roll
instrumentals, but when they do sing, their lyrics are pure evil. Usually about guys who
poison or gut their lady-friends and either bury them "down in the willows" or just dump
'em in the drink. Too creepy. I'm not a country fan but The Sadies turn my crank. Last
time they were here in Ottawa, the audience demanded a ten song encore so they pulled
out some cool covers (Teenage Head, Hasil Adkins) and even got Grog up to play organ on
a wyld version of Leavin' Here. Not yer usual c&w set list. But anyway, that's just
country music. Whew!

Cheers,
Pat

And a great show it was. I found out that Mooney Suzuki wason the bill and
was psyched to see them for the first time, but it turned out they
inexplicably went on first, so I only caught the end of their last song.
The middle band was, uh, not my cup of tea, and may have been locals (which
may explic why they went on second?). Anyway, the Fleshtones played a
killer set with 2 encores to about 30-40 people. Nary a person remained in
the designated (by law) drinking area in the all-ages club, and everybody
obeyed Zaremba's order to literally get down. Definitely worth the drive....
