One thing is that any band who wants to do a classic cover has the right
to do so. Telling the CK shouldn't do it does make any sense. But I have
to say that I have no interest in listening to this stuff as I've
already heard the originals a hundred times, I heard half a dozen bands
doing those songs & I don't think they bring anything to them... but
again, it's just my opinion & it doesn't mean they're wrong.

I'd

That's a strange opinion: even if you've never heard most of the songs
from "Stop", I think it's still a better introduction to the band. I
wonder if anyone thinks the new LP is better than "Stop"?

But I guess most of the people in Bompland were into the CK (or at least
some of their stuff) before the new LP.

And while the Kaisers moved 10 steps forward by

The Milkshakes & the Armitage Shanks did great with such projects & I'm
sure the Kaisers would do good to: but would you rate those are their
best work? Would you spin it as often as a LP filled with killer
originals?

I agree with Tony here, always do on these issues. Must be kindred
spirits or something. The Chesterfield Kings absolutely knocked my socks
off. Same with The Kings. I personally got into this stuff after it all
finished in the early 9os. As I said earlier it was the 60s stuff I knew
about first. In all honesty, other than The Crawdaddys and Prisoners i
didn't know that there was a garage 'revival' scene.
Other than a few bands though I find 80s garage bands very dated. They
make me think of the 80s more than the 60s. Long live The Thanes, Kings
and Hearts for doing it well. Less marks for The Fuzztones, Outta Place
etc. Big thumbs for The Optic Nerve.

draw well at all. The college students never go to rockshows, leaving us old

The turn-outs are pretty pathetic there. I think there generally used to be
better ones when it didn't have a liquor license and was more of a hang out
for kids. Even though they are/were mostly into hardcore/punk/ska I think
there was some spill over into other shows. Now the inside of the club has
been re-vamped, replacing a hang-out area of the club with the fenced off
bar, and I haven't been to a crowded show since, unfortunately. The place
does seem to have good sound and does try to bring in good shows of various
genres (in addition to ? and the Fleshtones, they've brought in Lil Ed and
the Blues Imperials, a show I wish I had seen). I don't think the club
sucks as much as the local non-audience. They've spruced the place up, the
sound isn't bad, and the shows (and beer) are really inexpensive. I'll
still go there for good shows that I hear about - I'd hate to see the place
close. At least it's real easy to meet the bands! :)

As it was, I'd promised my brother I'd come visit my now one month old

Anyway, the Mooney Suzuki would've sealed the deal for me. Saw those guys
last summer and flipped out! Just so all in the NYC area know, The Mooney
Suzuki will share a bill with The Insomniacs on Friday March 19th at Coney
Island High's Cyclone Room. (Then you can go home, sleep for 8 hours and
drive to Boston for The Remains.)

Mojo-
I have a sense of humor, but I find people like you, who "got into garage in
the 90's after it was over" to grate on my nerves, simply because you act like
experts , when you weren't even aware, let alone part, of the scene that paved
the way for the stuff you dig NOW! Most of the bands that you dig now were
turned on to garage by bands like the Kings, Fuzztones, Pandoras, etc. I was a
part of the original garage scene and can say first hand that it was cool to
most people that bands like the Fuzztones and Outta Place combined a bit of
their own take on the music-it made it more accesible to most people who
weren't aware of the music.

Yup, you got that right! Could not have said it better. But, one thing

A few months back when the Sea Monkeys came through, I was talking
"radio" with Dave (The Spazz) of 'FMU fame and he asked if I get calls
during my show....No, not at all I told him. His reply "neither do I.
And I'm like, "I'm so glad you said that!"

Yeah, most of the calls that do come in are not for me...either they are
looking for someone else or they're looking for food (apparently the
station phone # is close to that of the food service on campus).
Sometimes though, just sometimes you get a call that's right on the
mark. Over the past month or so I think I got requests for the Sonics
and Heartbreakers which was real cool. And I don't think Chris heard
this story (you were out oif the room at the time I told this) but, when
I announced the Easy Livin' playin' on the radio, I get this call from
someone who tells me he tapes the show every week but was afraid he'd
miss the Easy Livin's performance. So he wanted to send me tapes so I
can record this for him.....this is two weeks before the show.

So, I don't get many calls. But, I know I got a bunch of loyal
listeners. Yes it's nice to hear from them and yes it could get tough
when you got nothing cued up and that song is about to end but, what are
ya gonna do...you can't have it both ways. I guess I try not think about
it much, besides I'm gonna be doing the same show if one person or a
million people are listening.

That's weird. We probably get anywhere from 5 to a dozen calls a week,
and sometimes we hear from internet listeners halfway across the
country, which is always cool. We give the station's number & area code
a lot, as well as encourage people to call w/requests, and it seems to
work (even though we rarely have all of the requested stuff with us at
the time). I don't know... do you promote your radio show with flyers
and stuff? That might help get people to tune in who like that kind of
music and so you can actually reach those who dig it. But a lot of times
people will listen and NEVER call in, too.

> When some other person fills
> in, the whole city calls up to tell them the show is great!

When you have people fill in for you, what sort of stuff do they play?
The same kind of music? Or do they do their own thing? You should
definitely only have people fill in for you who will play the same style
of music, otherwise listeners will get confused. It just helps to stay
consistent.

> I don't rely on calls, but it is nice when people let you know they
> actually LIKE what you play, or give you some encouragement!

Definitely. Makes it seem like you're not doing it all for nothing. Try
this: A couple of times during your show, say something you just played
was "by request", even if it wasn't (try not to make a big deal out of
it, though). A lot of times when people hear this, they'll think, "oh
cool, she's playing requests!", and then call ya up with a couple. It's
worth a try.

Good luck!

batch of Get Hip releases (which, as Kopper said, is the best group of
stuff they've put out in quite some time) and was quite psyched. I think
we're going to hear a bunch more people talking about these guys now that
they've got a record out here.
If you're booking them a tour in the US, please make sure they get
up to the Northeast, OK?

Wow... it looks like we may get more calls than most of these other
shows, which is odd seeing as how this is St. Louis, not the East Coast
or other places where garage has had more of a scene over the years. In
the past month we've received requests for Frigg A Go-Go, The Creation,
The Sorrows, The Dwarves, The Countdowns, The Donnas, Deadbolt, Dick
Dale, Gravedigger V, Dukes Of Hamburg, The Bobbyteens, Screaming Lord
Sutch, The Bomboras, Shadows Of Knight, Nine Pound Hammer, Teengenerate,
Bo Diddley, Q65, The Remains, Little Boy Blues, Zackary Thaks, The
Litter, Moving Sidewalks, and more! (yeah, I keep a list...)

These EP's are not available in the US...maybe you can get the Death
Dealers one, which was the previous name of the band.
We only get the 45's because I'm friends with Mr. Pan, the leader of the
band. The video tape isn't too clear, mostly dark. We'll get a better one
from the band and circulate it around.

I get about 5-10 calls per show. Last week I got a call from an
over-the-road
truck driver who happened upon the show and started taping it from a
boombox. Most call just to blabber about psych music and tell me how
wonderful I am. I also get at least one call every show wondering where
the hip-hop show went. I've only been at it a month and it's a fucking
blast!

I think you may be encoutering folks who have a different view of music
than you do, and maybe different experiences. Just because the Fuzztones
and Pandoras (and I'm sure other bands) were "it" for you, doesn't
necessarily mean that they are "it" for other folks.
People are this list can be quite knowledgable about this type of music. It
isn't a personal put-down to you, nor are they being snobby or arrogant.
They are simply trying to impart knowledge or opinions to others. That's
how we all learn more about what's out there.
I'm not sure if you are aware of how others may be percieving you posts.
Actually, you are the one who is appearing to sound quite snobby and
arrogant. I'm not saying that you are this way at all in person, it's just
sometimes that things come across differently in writing.
People are just joking with you in hopes to lighten your day. On this list,
we usually try and have some fun. I think everyone is just hoping that you
will have some fun with the list too, and, like the rest of us, get turned
on to some cool new music!
Bomp! isn't just for garage. When you sign on and read the particulars, you
see that the list is meant to be whatever it is for the people who post here.

Glad to see you dig the Jaymen LP. That really hipped me to thinking about
playing Link/Allan style instros on the guitar!!!

I'd really like for them to play in NYC in particular. It kind of all
depends how I can go about doing this. I've asked them to submit a list of
cities they are interested in playing in, and then I'll see what we can do.
They have expressed interest in mainly playing on the West Coast, but in
all actuality, that may not be as financially viable as doing East Coast
dates. Right now, the audiences in the East are broader and more people
tend to come out to see bands - and payment is much higher.

I'm in the process of trying to bring more overseas bands to the USA, and
have been contacted by quite few to do US tours for them.
I'll be using some of the info submitted by Bompers last year about
booking clubs and stuff.
The main problem is publicity. Dr. Explosion played in LA to FIVE people.
Nobody met them at the airport, nobody did what they had said they'd be
willing to do for the band. If this kind of thing happens, I'm not going to
book there.
Booking overseas bands means that I will rely a lot on other fans to help
me out. I'm not going to make a penny from it, I just wanna see some of my
fave bands (and I want my friends to see 'em too!) - but that means
committment from the whole "scene", and money enuff to support the band to
the minimum (at least) while they are here. It also means a lot of
co-operation from their
American record companies for publicity materials etc. People to volunteer
to poster, people to help put them up in their homes- meet them at airports
and help get equipment etc.

If anyone has suggestions (Do NOT send a list of bands you want to see!!)
of how to go about doing things, I'd REALLY appreciate it and take it all
into consideration! Please email me off line about this.

Thanks,

Glynis

Subject: Rare Breed Vs. The Ohio Express

Hello, I hope somebody can solve a mystery for me. For years I owned
a 45 by the Ohio Express called "Beg Borrow & Steal". It was a minor
hit for them on the boss 30 back in '66 or '67. I still have that
record on tape and it sounds exactly like the version appearing on the
Nuggets Box, but credit is given to a group called The Rare Breed.
The Nuggets booklet vaguely makes reference to an "unsubstantiated"
identity change for this group. Can anybody verify that these two
groups are indeed the same?

I don't know if the 45 on Corby has been reissued, but there are two
unreleased studio demos by the same group on the Big Beat CD "Nuggets From
The Golden State: Good Things Are Happening." The songs, "Tomorrow Is
Another Day" and "Sad Man," are both Beau Brummels-style folk-rock numbers,
unlike the Corby 45, which is described in the CD as "R&B-flavoured."

They were recorded in mid-1966 at Golden State Recorders, and by the time
they were signed, they had taken the name mentioned above. The Neighb'rhood
Children, of course, were subject to a Sundazed reissue a while back...

Well, it was listed as an upcoming release in one of the Sundazed catalogs
last year or year before, so I assumed since it didn't come out last year,
perhaps it will this year. That's what I get for assuming. I'm also still
waiting for word on the Leaves comp, the 2-CD Paul Revere/Raiders set,
Butch Engle & The Styx. The Magicians and the Luv'd Ones finally came out,
but that's all I've seen that I was waiting for...

I guess they're just waiting for the right time. Collectables reissued the
"Turn On The Music Machine" album with bonus tracks recently, so maybe
they're just trying to stagger the flow of MM reissues...

This is a real tragedy. Heck, short of driving 'em around, I could
definitely do better up here in Nowheresville (Thunder Bay, Ontario)! Then
again, the Bomboras might have a different opinion, considering how they
were treated here (that club is now closed). You'd think the home of
Dionysus and the Sunset Strip could do alot better.

I'm sure Atlanta has been and will be a whole other scene for this most
deserving group of Euro-hipsters!

RealAudio helps the call-in numbers, in addition to the 40,000 watts at
KDHX. WMFO is only 150 watts and the RealAudio hookup pushed back once again
to March, so you figure an available listenership within say 5-6 miles on home
stereo in the dark when my show begins when the signal travels a little
further and mebbe 10 or 12 miles in car stereos. I've had guys in cabs &
limos at Logan Airport call in requests. I've also have had several people
say they're taping the broadcast, too.
With the exception of a couple of regulars who are known to call in once or
twice a month with cool BOMP!ish type of stuff, tell jokes, and fill me in on
local scene gossip, most requests are for The Clash, Romantics, Pretenders,
Joe Jackson and other early 80s mainstream outfits, as well as a request about
a month ago for Louis Armstrong. MJ Quirk was there, I blurted out, "This
really doesn't fit the broadcast!" I played it, it didn't kill me. I only
hope he listened to the rest of the show.
Maybe 2 percent of your audience will call in on any given show, those are
from stats compiled from another local Boston college/community station about
5 years back. So the larger the broadcast area, the more calls a show will
generate.

I do a flyer saturation once or twice a year, I dunno if it works. I do
know it hasn't hurt.
