I remember seeing the Shindiggers just about every time they came to
Adelaide. I absolutely loved them. I'd wear my skinny black tie for days
after! I've got just about everything they recorded and still play it
regularly. Now (pause) I am a Milkshakes fan but I think the Shindiggers
would beat (no pun intended) the Milkshakes in a tag team beat match - 2 out
of 3 falls.

The recent talk about the Hoodoo Gurus reminded me of one of the best gigs
I've seen. The Gurus played at a small cellar called Lark & Tinas (I think
the Screaming Believers supported). I remember, just before they were to go
on seeing James Baker walk back from the bar with a box full of assorted
bottles of strong liquor. I thought to myself - that is the life.
Unfortunately the best drink rider I ever got in those days was a carton of
VB (what an insult to a Cooper's Ale man!)

I don't believe they are. At least, they sound nothing alike, but since
there were no liner notes in my copy of Hang It Out To Dry, I could be
wrong. I think there was another '60s group called The Mods (or maybe it
was Modds) from New Mexico? Anyone know?

Subject: Spaeth/Fleshtones

Yeah, I remember Mr. Excitement well! He was the Fleshtone, actually,
that I most looked forward to seeing on stage, what with his
tongue-in-cheek "bad ass" facial expressions and "dances" with
Zaremba. And I miss someone besides Zaremba with a tambourine on
stage! Contrary to Steve's report, however, I had more than one
conversation with Spaeth that involved no more than surly grunts. Ah,
well—there was the show (somewhere in D.C.) in the mid-80s when he
threw his sax down halfway through and never returned. He quit the
band for good a short while later.

I must reinforce what Steve said about Spaeth's health, however; it
hasn't been good at all, and we can all understand why he's not up for
the rigors of touring.

And let's not forget that his "return" (of sorts) to the band should
actually be linked to 1993's "Beautiful Light," on which he played sax
and cowrote "DT Shadows."

I'm pretty sure it was Lemans, it came out around the same time as Grand Prix
(mid-late sixties) and I think it may have started Steve McQueen. Car and
Driver magazine did an article about the best and worst racing movies, and
they could serve as a better source for year, stars, etc. No idea if it's been

Hey kids,

'Tis the time for some shameless self-promotion (Vine not, eh?)....
Hot off the ol' record press, it's the now sound, the way out sound of
The Orange Alabaster Mushroom comin' at you in all its fuzzy, paisley
glory. Yes, you too can slither and hop to "The Slug", the brand new
single by The O.A.M.; and if yer in a more mind-expanding mood, check
out the b-side, "Ethel Tripped a Mean Gloss" (apparently about speaking
in tongues whilst on heavy psychedelics - crazy, man).
Anyway, enough blabbing - you can get this slab o' wax right now through
Norman Records (UK):
     www.normrecs.u-net.com/exciting.htm (brief review)
     www.normrecs.u-net.com/newlist.htm (Norman catalogue)

or, directly through Earworm Records:
     www.normrecs.u-net.com/earworm.htm (Earworm catalogue)

or, if you can stand the wait, Cargo US & UK, as well as Parasol (US)
will be distributing it very shortly.

Joanna mentioned the Hoodoo Gurus' last show. Has anyone picked up their
3-CD compilation, "Bite The Bullet"? I was wondering what it consists of
- - album tracks, singles, and what else? Any unreleased or live
recordings?

Robbie White asked:
> Why doesn't anyone on this list talk about the Slickee Boys

Blair responded:
> they don't get me jumping up and down... I don't recall ever seeing
the Slickee Boys, so that might be part of the reason.

I'm sure that not seeing them live has a lot to do with our perceptions.
There are very few garage bands from the 80s that I would rave about
without having seen them live myself. I've heard good things about The
Slickee Boys and The Cynics, as well as The Tell Tale Hearts and Manual
Scan, and the recordings I've heard by these guys ranged from decent to
great, but I don't really think of them when I reflect cause I didn't see
them back then. Actually, I saw The Cynics once, up in Boston at Green
Street Station.

On the other hand I saw both The Mosquitos and Secret Service probably
two dozen times or so, and the NY/NJ bands (Vipers, Cheepskates, Tryfles,
Fuzztones, Raunch Hands, Mod Fun, etc.) were always playing together so
we got to see them all the time. Bands like The Lyres and The
Chesterfield Kings were also pretty much a constant presence in
NYC/Hoboken. The Slickees must have come up to play, but I don't think I
saw them.

Blair also wrote:
> I always felt The Mosquitos' EP was weak and watered down.

Indeed. Their demos were *far* superior (and hopefully will be compiled
one day). And that EP sported perhaps the worst cover of any record in
recent decades...

Anyone wanna vote for best album cover of the 80s? Personally, I loved
"On Fyre" by The Lyres.

Be seeing you,
Bill

Though it ain't garage, one white band that play soul like gods is Simon
Dupree & the Big Sound! Their medley 60 Minutes Of Your Love/A Lot Of
Love is a true monster!
Also check one german 90s band, Speed: they do one Small Faces cover
(can't remember the title) that is a perfect mix of soul & punk!

I really dig the soulful vocals of Dick Dodd (?) on the Standells' "Rari"
and "Mr. Nobody". Closer to the present, how 'bout "Nightclub by the
Creeps or "out of My mind" by their predecessors, the Backdoor Men.

I remember "Grand Prix" with James Garner, Brian Bedford, lots of
international stars. Typical 3-hour epic soap opera crapola but one guy did
get into a major wreck and wound up impaled in a tree (!). Twas how I
learned about "drafting", tho...

I'm sure it was made in the 60s, just don't remember exactly when. Maybe?

Everything w/Crypt is kinda delayed at the moment. They just moved their
entire inventory up to a new warehouse in Truckee, CA (30 miles west of
Reno in the High Sierras!) and Tim is in the process of moving all of
his shit over from Hamburg, too. So be patient... the next batch will
probably be available very soon.

I think he meant Hasil Adkins. And yes, it would be great to see more of
his ilk out there (or, for that matter, Dean Morgan!), especially to
spice up the often bland and over-rated alt.country movement.

Hey, let's not forget the amazing Don Walser!

yeah but iGrand Prix had a lot of great racers, uh....racing! And the track
footage was great. Plus it was pretty minimalist (critic talk!!! critic
talk!!!) for the day with the sound track being the sound of , uh...racing
cars! Plot wise, nothing to write home to mother about, but it's almost a
better documentary than anything else...

It's Peter Cook not Dudley Moore who sing that one! Great movie!

Steve McQueen did a movie about racing at Le Mans, but I forget the title.
You could search by movies with Steve Mcqueen in them...
