It's Peter Cook not Dudley Moore who sing that one! Great movie!

A great song - Peter Cook sang it, Dudley Moore wrote it. The Circus Days CD
I have it on lists it as Copyright Control (I wonder if that is of any help)

Beyond The Fringe is a must. This was a comedy revue from the mid-'60s
that included Cook and Moore along with a few others who didn't go on to
the same degree of fame (at least not in the US). I think Alan Bennett was
one? Paxton Whitehead was on one album, but not another. It's pretty much
straight sketch comedy, though there are some musical bits thrown in to
showcase Mr. Moore - notably his rendition of the Theme from Bridge over
the River Kwai, during which he can't figure out how to end it. Great
stuff, but I'm pretty sure it's long out of print.

figured it might be tough to get the days off. But if The Sonics are
playing, then I'll make my way there regardless. There is a will (mine),

I think a lot of stuff by Buck Owens and the Buckaroos is as good if not
better than most of the stuff that today is called "no depression,"
"twang-core," "roots-rock" or whatever you wanna call it. And with a
minimum of traditional country instruments like fiddle or steel guitar, it
was certainly more like rock and roll than anything in country at least
before or after "rockabilly."

The fact that Sundazed Records has reissued nearly every Buck Owens album
says a lot, I think, when 90% of their output is garage/psych.

Besides all the Mods records people have listed, there were at least two

And I'm sure there were quite a few groups in the US called the Mods that

If you're talking British soul, two others to look for are Cliff Bennett
and the Rebel Rousers and the Paramounts. Bennett and company were very
popular between 1962-68 and Cliff still performs. They did a heck of a lot
of Motown/Stax stuff. And they're the only British band I've ever heard
that covered "Roadrunner" by Jr. Walker and the All-Stars and not by Bo
Diddley. Check out the recent "Cliff Bennett at Abbey Road" CD on EMI.

As for the Paramounts, they were a straight R&B band from 1963-66 before
becoming Procol Harum. They did covers of the Impressions, Bobby Bland,
Charlie Mingus, out of the way stuff. "The Paramounts At Abbey Road"
contains unreleased covers of Tom Jones' "Chills And Fever," Solomon
Burke's "Stupidity," Marvin Gaye's "Pride And Joy" and even "Baby I'm
Yours." Gary Brooker had an incredibly soulful voice. And a half dozen
tracks recorded as Licquorice John Death and the All-Stars in 1970 showed
that even after the psychedelia of Procol Harum, they could still rock and
roll and play soul with the best of them.

Back to US garage soul, has anyone got the new Arf Arf CD "Eastern PA
Soul"? Any opinions?

I think that most of us agree that mainstream C&W these days is pretty lame.
But I like some of the C&W bands that I have seen play small clubs. In San
Diego, there is the Incredible Hayseeds and Red Truck. Austin has Jesse
Dayton. And the Supersuckers "Must Have Been High" album is probably the
best country album to come out in 10 years.

C'mon now! What about Tom Jones? Seriously though, if nobody else has
mentioned the mighty Vagrants (especially their big one "I Can't Make a
Friend) then I will add this to the essential list of garage soul
masterpieces.

Also on the subject of C&W vs. garage, there are a couple of acts that come

those right in the middle. Those bands/artists being The Poppy Family and
Sandy Posey. Once again I apologize if somebody else has already mentioned
these.

If ever you can find the early 'Derek & Clive' records then you would be in
for a treat. This was their spoken-word comedy that was much too obscene for
the BBC. However, I've been searching for them for a long time. They did (in
the early seventies) a Derek & Clive movie, this was generally agreed to be
utter rubbish.

I agree & I think it's already taking place as you describe it. As with
great garage music, there's plenty of it out there, you just need to know
where to look. I love country music, but I never listen to commercial
country music stations because the results are so disappointing.

What do you mean by "politically candy-assed," Butterscotch Breath? :^)
Truly, if you're gonna throw around statements like that you really ought to
be specific about who you're talking about. In other words, are the
political candy asses the ones who elected that lyin' cheatin' hypocrite
Bill Clinton governor of Arkansas on mulitiple occassions or are the
political candy asses the ones who keep electing that repulsive butt-headed
homophobic North Carolinian Jesse Helms to the U.S. Senate? Misguided folks
live all over the place here in the U.S., from California to Connecticut so
relax a little, willya?

As far as your point about Merle Haggard's "Fightin' Side of Me" being a hit
only in the South, I believe you're misinformed. "The Fightin' Side of Me"
was a hit on the *national* Billboard charts in 1970. As far as Merle's
politics leaving a little to be desired, again, I think you should probably
take another look. Yeah, Merle upset (and pleased) a lot of people with his
pro-military and pro-traditionalism songs of the era, but very few of the
people who get angry about these songs take the time to note that Haggard
also wrote and recorded an equal number of songs that would have to be
considered "progressive" by anybody's measure. How 'bout "Irma Jackson,"
one of his better-known compositions, which laments the difficulties and
societal hassles that confront a young inter-racial couple very much in
love. Another song, "Go Home" adressed the same topic, also with a very
sympathetic point of view. In short, Haggard is a much more complex and
individualistic songwriter than he generally gets credit for, though I admit
if you look only at songs like "Okie From Muskogee" and "The Fightin' Side
Of Me" you're going to get a very skewed perspective.

>Other rugged individuals like Townes Van Zandt and Jimmie Dale
Gillmore thrived in the Austin scene.

I think the term is "rugged individualist," but I agree with your assessment
of Austin as a town where creative folks who dig country can thrive,
probably much more so than in Nashville.

You beat me to the god damn punch, Andy! I concur. It's really too bad
that so many people can't see past the tight pants, undie-tossing, and
mini-afro to understand what a great singer he was, is and probably
always will be! Sheeeit, I'd rather hear *his* version of "Kiss" over
Prince's any day (if one *must* be subjected to that song!) James
Brown, Hardest Working Man in Show Business *MY ASS*!
T.J. is far more worthy of that title. If ya don't believe it listen to
the very first track off the "Live in Las Vegas" album, "Turn on Your
Love Light," or go to his show. Don't get me wrong I love J.B., but
T.J. don't need no fuckin' 15-piece band, 6 backup singers and a
silly-ass cape. He's got all he needs - the Voice, the Moves, and the
Third Leg!
YYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAIAAAAAAAAAAAAEEEEEEEEIIIIIIAAAAAAAAAAEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that most of us agree that mainstream C&W these days is =
pretty lame. But I like some of the C&W bands that I have seen play =
small clubs. In San Diego, there is the Incredible Hayseeds and Red =
Truck. Austin has Jesse Dayton. And the Supersuckers "Must Have Been =
High" album is probably the best country album to come out in 10 years.

The video, "The Best of Not Only...But Also" has Dudley Moore singing a
wonderfully unintelligible song that is "translated" by Peter Cook. Moore
is credited as "Bo Dudley", oddly enough the name used by another artist
who recorded the great song "Shotgun Rider" featuring Freddie Roulette.

No, you may have a point about that. He did do pretty good versions of
"Bama Lama, Bama Loo" and "Little by Little". Since I am my mother's
child, I know exCEEDingly well about what happened afterwards, so let's not
go on about that! However, who DID do the original version of that song?
I have the Pickwicks' version and I believe that the songwriter, Gordon
Mills was managing Jones at the time, but this is one that I have not
worked out, nor recall discussion.
