umm, isn't that the song where he uses the "N"

I have a tape of that in PAL, so it's a little

>> People are so politically candy-assed in the south, it's hard to
introduce new ideas.

>What do you mean by "politically candy-assed," Butterscotch Breath? :^)

Actually I was aware that "politically candy-assed" was a little
nondescript, but it certainly sounds like an insult, the same way
"Butterscotch Breath" does (although when you think about it, it's far
less insulting than "scrotum breath" or "dog breath").

>are the political candy asses the ones who elected that lyin' cheatin'
hypocrite
>Bill Clinton governor of Arkansas on multiple occasions or are the
>political candy asses the ones who keep electing that repulsive
butt-headed
>homophobic North Carolinian Jesse Helms to the U.S. Senate?

Well, there you have it. In this situation the people of Arkansas seem
slightly less "misguided" in this sense since we've seen their governor
climb to higher aspirations and reach new levels of lyin' cheatin'
hypocrisy on the votes of all the American people. To pinpoint what I
directly meant by with my original insult, just locate the area commonly
referred to as the "Bible Belt". Actually now that I'm back on this
subject, how about any area that had separate "white" and "colored" water
fountains 30 years ago? I don't want to single out any individual
politicians, but the difficulties the Civil Rights movement faced in the
South showed not only a large degree of racism built into their social
structure, but also a massive resistance to change. Of course 30 years
ago was 30 years ago, but in my second-to-last trip down there (my last
was filled with beer and garage music, no real complaints!), I was very
much aware of a great "pride" in southern traditions.
Much of my biases against Tennessee in particular stems from pointless
run ins with the police four years ago who had nothing better to do than
fuck with people with California license plates, and those miserable
"dry" towns I drove through last summer.

As for Merle Haggard, Greg, your defense was an informed one, so I'll
just paste some of it below for those who might have overlooked it.
"Same Train, Different Tune" is probably my favorite record of his.

>"The Fightin' Side of Me"
was a hit on the *national* Billboard charts in 1970. As far as Merle's
politics leaving a little to be desired, again, I think you should
probably
take another look. Yeah, Merle upset (and pleased) a lot of people with
his
pro-military and pro-traditionalism songs of the era, but very few of the
people who get angry about these songs take the time to note that Haggard
also wrote and recorded an equal number of songs that would have to be
considered "progressive" by anybody's measure. How 'bout "Irma Jackson,"
one of his better-known compositions, which laments the difficulties and
societal hassles that confront a young inter-racial couple very much in
love. Another song, "Go Home" addressed the same topic, also with a very
sympathetic point of view. In short, Haggard is a much more complex and
individualistic songwriter than he generally gets credit for, though I
admit
if you look only at songs like "Okie From Muskogee" and "The Fightin'
Side
Of Me" you're going to get a very skewed perspective.<

>>Other rugged individuals like Townes Van Zandt and Jimmie Dale
>>Gillmore thrived in the Austin scene.

>I think the term is "rugged individualist,"

Yeah, well, I haven't met either of 'em, so I don't know how rugged they
actually are.

Dan

Let us not forget Wayne Cochran, "The White James Brown" (as if such a
thing were possible-yet Wayne got as close as any white guy is ever likely
to!). Check out his Mercury 45s for some ravin', over-the-top screaming
vocals... "Goin' Back To Miami" is almost soul-punk, and indeed was
covered by The Unchained Mynds on Buddah, in a groovin' garage version.
Wayne and his later '60s Biker band The C.C. Riders appear in the 1970
film C.C. and Company (on video under the ridiculous retitle of Chrome
Hearts). This movie also stars Joe Namath and features a topless
Ann-Margret (!!!). Wayne's crowning glory was his white pompadour, about
as high off the top of his head as Esquerita's. I saw a late-60s lp of
his with a hilarious shot of him laying on the floor under a table in some
bar, pomp perfectly coiffed, belting out a song. He cut 45s for a number
of labels including King and Chess, which are not too hard to find, but I
like the Mercury ones best (he originally cut and wrote the death song
"Last Kiss" too...). One of my favorite trashy finds is an autographed
Mercury 45 by Wayne, which says, "To a soul Brother - Sincerely, Wayne
Cochran".

Anybody know if Wayne is still playing shows in some Vegas or Atlantic
City lounge?

Frank

And I like David Clayton-Thomas' early stuff with the Shays. His voice is
the closest to Wayne Cochran of anyone else I've heard.
Recently I bought a single of Levon & The Hawks. One side is pop-folk, and
the other is garage-soul. Pretty typical of the Toronto sound!

Hey Bompers,

We haven't done all that much cool story-telling in a while, so I was
wondering if anyone would like to talk about some of the wildest stage
shows/gimmicks/antics yu've ever witnessed. With all this collective rock &
roll experience on the list, it could make for some very humorous and fun
reading.

Since I can't really do justice to such a topic 'cuz I can't see all that
much stuff on stage, I'll start us off with a couple second-hand stories.
My pal Dave "What Wave" once told me 'bout a Dwarves show which got totally
out of hand with the band going psycho, attacking the audience and vice
versa (flailing guitars, broken beer bottles, blood, etc.). On a more
tasteful (literally) note, I read somewhere about a Go Nuts show which
involved shooting hot sugar out of the snack cannon with gooey results for
both the venue and the patrons!

So, do tell!

Vicariously,

Rocky.

OK, with all of this font talk, I'm going to list my fave font site.
It's the Font Library and lists 2,000 free fonts - and often has "bootleg"
versions of fonts you have to pay for. They just appear as different names.
Other sites have done this for short periods of time and then have gotten
in copywrite trouble, so if you want it, get it now!!!

http://www.betax.com/freefonts/index.html

And if anyone wants a set of 60's-ish (from early - psychy) fonts I've
culled from all kinds of web sites in True Type for PC's only, just email
me and I'll zip 'em on over. That means you need a zip drive to unzip
them!! The file is really huge, with some 60 fonts and a few groovy dings
so let me know if you want 'em and I'll send them on over this weekend (it
takes me a long time to send them!)

In return, if you find any suitable fonts I've not got in this file, please
either let me know where to find them, or send the file my way. It'd be
appreciated!!!

Yes, hmmm, well. I'm quite fond of my Peter Sellers 45 with Beatles covers.
Up there with the bumble bee I think (maybe this is why the South American

A guy here locally who runs Whiz Bam (http://www.whizbam.com/) can get
it (Le Mans) for $39.98. Let me know if you want to order it, or you can
check his site and order it yourself if you'd like!

Hey all,
Thanks for all the groovy fonts and font sites. The response was brilliant
and a great help to spicing up docs & flyers. Cheers Tony

last i heard, wayne had found religion and was doing cable tv in miami
preaching in a non-soul gospel fashion---lord knows he had the hair for it,
but if he only leaned toward the "good side" of gospel music it might be
worth tracking down

Wait... does that mean you'll send 'em on a zip disc or do you mean
you'll zip the file, in which case you just need something like PK Unzip
to expand the file?

I think she means a WinZip to extract (unzip) it. Glynis(the font zipper), I
just downloaded it and they are coolsville!!...Thanks. AOL has a 5mb max
attachment so that could be why it didn't swing through the first time.
Thanks again Tony

Hello!
Didn't The Choir ("It's Cold Outside" etc) call themselves "The Mods" before changing their name? I haven't heard anything more from this group
than the song I mentioned, but I read the info on the delerium psychedelic website. "Cold" certainly is a great pop song, by the way. I love it.

Tom Jones has a bunch of great stuff. I like his version of the great Chuck
