Cannot recall this guys' last name, exactly. It was
something like "Shurbotnick" ...some dweeby name
like that. The single had a black/white pic sleeve and the two
tunes were really kinda primative punk folk sounding.

My impression at the time I found it, was that it was
'released' around '78 or '79. It could have pre-dated
late 7 T's punk though too. Released on "House Of
Guitars" Records, which appeared to be one of those
record store/instrument store melds that started
dissappearing about then.

Seem to recall this guy mentioned occassionally in
Trouser Press back then. What was the story on this
guy ? Any takers here ?

Armand Schoebrock. Not sure which record you've got, but I think
Armand recorded a bunch of stuff in the 60s. If Bill Holmes is on this
list, I'm sure he can give us more than I can. Anyway, Armand started The
House of Guitars in Rochester, NY (well, actually I think it might be
Irondequoit... whatever, it's up by Lake Ontario in the Rochester
suburbs). The place is absolutely HUGE. The bottom floor is a record store
(and a real *mess* last time I was there. Records in piles all over the
place.) But the upper floors are more instrument stuff. Both Greg Prevost
& Andy Babiuk of the C. Kings work there. A few years ago, I was up
visiting my cousins and decided to stop by while I was there. I ran into
Andy who asked me to hold on a minute so we could talk; he just had to
finish some business first - selling about $30,000 worth of guitars to
some French buyers who were in town.
The HoG used to have some great commercials (anyone know if that's
still true?)
I believe the HoG was also behind Mirror Records, the label the C.
Kings were on for a long time. Perhaps Victor T. can tell us more if he's
still on the list, since he used to roadie for the band.
Armand also was known in Rochester during the 60s (from what I
remember reading) for putting a picture of himself (long hair and all) on
a billboard with the message "Let It Grow!"
You may also want to check out the Armand Schoebrock Steals LP.
Not sure if it's this one or another, but there's a track (all listed
simply as Band 1, Band 2, etc., no song names) where all you hear is a guy
(Armand) in the confessional or something telling about ripping off the
church's poor box.

1) Question Mark, in 1987, playing at a frat house here in Ann Arbor (not
with the original band, but with some well-trained other guys). Nobody in
the place but a friend and I knew any of the songs other than 96 Tears,
but the crowd was absolutely jumping to the music. They set up in a
large living room of this ancient huge frat house, & it was packed tight
with well-lubed bodies. About half way through "Got To," Question Mark
kicked his floor monitors aside and began to crawl on hands and knees out
into the dancers, screaming "Got to, Got to Find Her!!!" over and over.
Eventually he got back to the stage area, but that minute or so was too
much grooviosity for me to bear (esp. given the Frat house surroundings,
and it being the first time I had seen the man).

2) Mr. Outrageous himself (the title of his '69 lp), Kim Fowley played in
Detroit a couple years back, and he kept goading the audience into coming
onstage and doing weird stuff... some very exhibitionistic women with
leather outfits and Betty Page haircuts were doing this fake lesbian s/m
sex act, then later the lead singer of the Detroit Cobras (drunk and
obnoxious as always) climbed onstage with them to do this threesome deal,
when she suddenly leapt for Kim, grabbing him around the neck and trying
to strangle him (apparently seriously). They struggled for a long minute,
then both fell down, and suddenly some bouncers jumped on and pulled her
off... Kim grabbed the mic to say "goodnight" and ran for the dressing
room.

Ed Sanders also wrote "Tales of Beatnik Glory," an excellent novel
that's really more of a parody than a homage to the whole Beat
era. And as I recall, it takes place mainly in the mid-to-late
'60s, way past the Beats' true sell-by date.

I'd suggest (along with what has already been mentioned), The Clown by
Heinrich Boll's. It's a very, very strange book written in 1963 -
originally in German.

And easier ones to find include the not so weird, but freaky for the times
Too Far To Walk by John Hersey and Jamey by Edwin Gilbert which are both
easy to read - very American coming of age 1967-68 books. Easy to find in
thrift stores.

I'd also suggest anything by Laurence Ferlinghetti.

So this is the flip to the original Attack single? I know the flip on the
Cameo Ohio Express version is "Maybe," an instrumental actually by Joe
Walsh's group the Measles.

I just found a copy of the "Beg, Borrow, And Steal" album by the Ohio
Express yesterday for 5 bucks. It's _great_ stuff, not bubblegum by a long
shot! This one would be worthy of reissue, if it weren't for Allen Klein
owning the Cameo catalog...

Geocities is really wierd in the way that it shuts down web browsers for no
apparent reason. Whenever my friend looks at any geocities site, it freezes
up his browser, and he has to restart his computer. I really don't know
what to tell you about it, besides keep trying and hope for the best.
There's nothing I can do about it as far as writing code or anything to stop
it. If you have another browser, I'd try using that. Sorry for all of the
problems, though. Try looking at other geocities sites, and see if it does
the same thing. Thanks for the patience.

I've never heard of that one, and would like to try it out.

This is happening with all kinds of Geocities sites. It mainly happens when
you try and close the "ad" pop-up. It has also been happening to me when I
try and exit one of their pages. When I first go on line this wasn't a
problem. Many other folks I know with sites there have left because nobody
has been able to access and read their pages. They are creating HTML for
their own sites, but the Geocities organization is inserting various
prompts somewhere within the "accessories" that they require accompany your
page (like the pop-ups) that are creating the problem.

Mirror Records, bad commercials, CK releases, what Blair said is all true.
Plus...

(1) The House of Guitars (officially Irondequoit) still does mondo bizarro
commercials. I love the one where they offer their "four locations"...and
then have shots of the four sides of the building!

(2) It's mostly CDs now, still an incredible mess, and you can always hear
the unmistakeable sound of vinyl SNAPPING as people misjudge their stride
and step on some albums...some of which are so old the shrinkwra has the
consistency of wax paper

(3) Armand used to run for Mayor every election. Now that Jesse V is
governor, he might run again

(4) I don't think there is a tshirt, record, video, instrument or cd in
existence that is NOT somewhere inside the building. The problem is finding
it.

Greg was one of the first people I met when I moved to Rochester. He didn't
know my name, but when he found out I was a Kinks fan, that was it - he was
always going out of his way to stick some good stuff aside for when I'd come
in the store. Probably still doesn't know my name.

I've had a Geopage for almost four years with few problems. There was one
recently where a script error kept occurring because they screwed up some
code for that floating "G"...I have the cut and paste text you need to add
to a Geopage if you have that problem and need to get rid of it.

The popup? Just close it. You don't even have to wait for it to fully load.

I use Explorer 4.0 now, was using versions of 2+ and 3+ for most of the past
3-4 years. I can access through work (Netscape) without problem though. Did
so today. I also clicked on The Makers page and a couple of others that were
mentioned here and had no problems. So something's up, but the pages ARE
functional!

I write all my own page code and have never had that cause a problem. I also
have gotten a lot of email from people who have stopped by for trades and
don't remember anyone having a crash. But if anyone wants to try and land

I'd suggest "Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up to Me," by Richard Farina, a
folk singer from the early 60s (married to Joan Baez's sister Mimi).) I read
it in '66 when it was first published (changed MY life...). It's been re-
issued and you can get it through Amazon.com.

Tells the story of Gnossos Pappadopoulis returning to his old university town
where the culture is rapidly changing (allegedly Cornell University where
Farina attended with Thomas Pyncheon). It's slightly post-beat but pre-hippy:
they soak cigarettes in paragoric to get high and take mescaline.

The tragic note to this is that two days after this book was published,
Richard Farina was killed in a motorcycle accident (he was going about 90 on a
canyon road!) after attending the release party.

I just thought of a couple more "outrageous stage antics" I've witnessed over
the years. I saw The Slits at Hurrah (NYC) in the late 70's. Ari Up was
evidently haing a visit from her monthly "friend". Since she was wearing a

leg.
On a similar note, I saw Lydia Lunch bring a used tampon to a Dead Boys show
at CBGB, and presented this "gift" to Stiv while he was onstage. He, of
course, utilized the clever stage prop. Luckily for all of you, I'm just
squeamish enough to

Of course the Dead Boys have had lots of "outrageous antics"-How about Stiv
actually hanging himself at the end of almost every show? Once I saw him do
this, and he couldn't get down in time. Michael Sticca, the Dead Boys roadie,
rushed to his aide, and got him down within seconds before he killed himself.
Hey! If someone collected all these "outrageous antics" stories, they could
probably get some publisher to release them as a book!

Close the pop up for most people's pages and it sends you into a system
crash or locks up Explorer.
I have a great computer with up to date Explorer and all, and it still has
problems. I don't find as many problems with older Geocities sites, mainly
newer ones.
