I'll see if I can get a gnome at Geocities on the line and find out what the
problem is...odd that the "newer" sites would cause problems the older ones
don't. I wonder if it's linked to the people who use their page creator as
opposed to manual html or another program such as FrontPage.

From: Rob White <REWHITE@fcc.gov>
Subject: Outrageous Band Antics

In the early 80s, the Stranglers played at the Ontario Theater in Washington DC. During the early part of their set, a guy kept jumping up on stage to dance in front of bass player J.J. Burnell. The first time this happened, J.J. lightly pushed him off the stage. During the next song, the guy did it again, and J.J. kicked him off with a karate kick. During the next song the guy jumped up a third time, and J.J., who was obviously pissed off by now, violently shoved the guy off of the stage. The guy gave J.J. the finger, and in the middle of the song, J.J. put his bass on top of the spaeker column, and leaped off the stage onto the guy's head, where he proceeded to pummel him. The drummer, Jet Black (a very BIG man) quit playing and joined J.J. in beating up this loser. They then carried the unconscious guy stage left, kicked open the emergency exit door, and threw him out into the back alley. Hugh Cornwell, the Stranglers' guitarist/vocalist then said: "We don't need any bounce!
rs for this band!" They then sta
rted the song over.

yeah, this is truly a great book... farina had a fast and loose writing

certain extain to
sing some yoghourt lyrics *copied* from what you hear on record, but it's
not fun
any more when 90% of the stuff you play means really nothing, not to

it's much harder to remember the "lyrics".... you have to remember in fact
the "sounds"

I'm sure there should be somewhere on the beautiful www a page devoted to

Don't forget about Armand's amazing early 45 (credited to Kack Klick),
"Lord This Cell Is Cold"/"One More Day, One More Night." Supposedly done
in 1963, these are unflinchingly raw proto-garage cuts about being in jail
(which was where Armand was when he wrote em, according to an old Outasite
mag. interview w/Armand I read). Armand's tortured vocals and the bluesy,
doomy guitar leads are like nothing I have heard from '63. Both cuts were
comped on the Glimpses series, Vol. 4. I guess the 45 label name was House
Of Guitars. If anybody has a copy of the original 45 to trade, let me
know!

Yeah-the BIG MUFF Is good on the bass -as it has a richer squelchier
tone.
The(sadly de-funct)Polyester Explosion always used one for Jaxons'
bass-and his
succesors' too! As for a good "british" fuzz sound----I like the
D.O.D"Classic Fuzz" 60$ish
which has that Keith Richards fuzz sound---it's tone modulator is good
too,enabling you to
get a trebley fuzz-on high or a very rich acid-drenched fuzz tone-on low
tone settings.
I preffer this to the Big Muff (gasp!) as the BM has very little range
and if you're very
particular about the exact sound of your fuzz......you are limited in
your control....other fuzz pedals "distort" WAY too much--resulting in a
metal-shred sound-yuk!
Besides the "Classic Fuzz" i also would recommend the Morley
Fuzz-wah-----the fuzz is like NO OTHER!!(serious) and to get just the
right tone on it-you set the wah- to the right spot(tonally) and just
leave it in that position!!!!! this produces a BLISTERING fuzz sound
that makes the paint peel off the back of my skull!
but the way to get a real authentic "british"fuzz is in the
amplifier---by overdriving it with just the righ reverb-treble-bass
levels! a lower watt amp does this well, a 100 watt does this too but
you need to twist knobs more,as it can handle more before breaking up
the signal.
mind you a guitar with really hot pickups doesn't hurt eaither!!like a
Gibson SG!
try a 50watt or 60watt amp with everything on 10 (these ones go to 11!)
What do you think ???(Pat?)

I think we've got the same disc, though mine is the US pressing on Port:
"Please Forget Her'/"Who Dat." I thought I read some article on them
which mentioned 1 or 2 other 45s, was it in the booklet that accompanied
the Nightmares From the Underworld comps?

No lie my friend! I have and regularly use the Morley Power Fuzz Wah. It
destroys all other fuzz pedals out there...past, present and sure to carry
on into the future. It is made like a tank and can take some serious abuse.
It has the sustain and the sound that the Big Muff and many other modern
attempts at fuzz pedals just don't have. Forget the rest...hold out for the
best.

The song is based on an old Leadbelly tune called "New Orleans". I think
that Burdon sort of reworded and added some stuff to the lyrics and Alan
Price came up with the legendary organ solo. This, I guess, was enough for
them to claim writing credits for it.

He definitely *did* kick Abbie Hoffman off the stage at Woodstock,
as evidenced on the "Maximum R&B" box set...apparently Abbie, in
the middle of the Who's set, started pontificating about John
Sinclair's sentencing for possession of marijuana, and this
interruption riled the hell out of ol' big schnozz. [By the way,
John Sinclair is supposed to be giving a reading this Sunday
night at the Lakeside Lounge, accompanied by members of the
Prissteens.]

I'm afraid I don't know of any definite Roger-bashing, though...
I would imagine Roger would be better skilled with the fists.

I heard that Keith was one so out of it he passed out during (or before?) a show
and the band recruited an audience member to play the drums for the show.
Doesn't sound like a good night for Keith fans but one hell of a night for some

>The song is based on an old Leadbelly tune called "New Orleans".

I remember seeing this in an old songbook as House of the Rising Sun. I
checked a Leadbelly site (http://cycad.com/cgi-bin/Leadbelly/discog/) and
it was recorded on a radio broadcast and re-recorded under the same name.
Not having read a biography of him, is this allusion to a title that it was
known by before it was recorded? The closest title I see is a song called
"In New Orleans", which I suspect is a different song. It seems to have
been based on an actual place.

The major differences between the Animals' version and Leadbelly's are that
the House of the Rising Sun is a whorehouse, which makes the Rising Sun
reference more significant and also the song is sung from the viewpoint of
one of the women who now works there, not a man who has made his living.
So while you could have a song that referred to Mack the Knife, a murderer
of prostitutes chart for Bobby Darin in 1959 (his version is based on the
lyrically incorrect version done by Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald,
which explains the Lotte Lenya reference; Lenya played Jenny in the
Threepenny Opera), apparenly, it was thought that you could not warn girls
and women AWAY from houses of dubious distinction without fear of the
censor, so the house became a gambling house.

In short, I don't believe that either the Animals or Leadbelly deserve
writing credit on this song, but there is a man or woman named Trad. that
must be raking in some pretty hefty royalties!

Up to and including Townshend kicking a Policeman in the oh-my-that-hurts
in the middle of a solo. The venue was on fire and he was being warned to
get out, but Townshend was playing and would have none of it. This is
based on an anecdote that was in "The Kids Are Alright", which I have not
seen since slightly after it's release, so I may have the story a bit wrong.

The Jury did indeed have the "Who Dat?" single on two different labels,
Quality in Canada and Port in the US. They both have "Please Forget Her" on
the B side.
This was their last release. They had three others before this "Until You
Do/Not Guilty", "I Tried To Tell Her/You'd Better Be On Your Way", and
"Back In My World/It's Been A Long Time" all for London Canada in 1965.
They weren't a very rousing band until "Who Dat?" came along.

Ooh Ooh Ooh!
My two cents:

From a Dylan fan's website:
http://members.xoom.com/elstongunn/house.html
In the United States, The Rising Sun, a song with roots in 17th century
British folk melody -- the rising sun has been a longtime symbol for
brothels in British and American ballads -- circulated widely among Southern
musicians, black and white. Black bluesman Texas Alexander first recorded it
in 1928. [Roy] Acuff may have learned this number from such neighboring
Smoky Mountain artists as versatile entertainer Clarence Tom Ashley or the
Callahan Brothers, an influential duet team of the '30s and '40s.
John R. Rumble, Liner Notes, Country & Western Classics: Roy Acuff,
Time-Life Records, 1983, p. 19.

Here are the lyrics from The Weavers(Pete Seeger) version from
www.mudcat.org

(definitely earlier than Burden's)

HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN

There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
It has been the ruin of many a poor girl
And me, oh, God, was one

My mother was a tailor,
She sewed them new blue jeans.
My lover he was a gambler, Oh Lord
Gambled down in New Orleans.

My husband, he was a gambling man
He went from town to town;
And the only time he was satisfied
Was when he drank his liquor down.

Now the only thing a gambling man needs
Is a suitcase and a trunk;
And the only time he's ever satisfied
I when he's on a drunk

Go and tell my baby sister
Never do like I have done,
But to shun that house in New Orleans
That they call the Rising Sun

With one foot on the platform,
And one foot on the train
I'm goin' back to New Orleans
To wear the ball and chain.

I'm going back to New Orleans
My race is almost run;
I'm going back to spend the rest of my life
Beneath that Rising Sun.

- -----------------------------------------------------------------
The Weavers
The sign of the rising sun was simply a red lantern. DC

Actually, the inverse is true. Daltrey dropped Pete with one punch. And yes,
Keith did pass out one night and was replaced by a drummer from the audience
("Is there a drummer in the house??") who, according to the band, did okay.
The latter is well documented with film footage.
