Speaking of the Dolls, I would reccomend picking up the recent live cd-I'm a
Human Being, on Reciever . It has some songs from a show in Vancouver, and a
few of the songs from the Red Patent Leather lp. The songs from the Vancouver
show sound great, the guitars are really out front,as they should be with the
Dolls.

Chris Townson from the band John's Children sat in on drums for the Who for
some dates on a UK tour but I'll not say anything about it here as I don't
want to spoil the story for those of you who are eagerly awaiting the new
issue of Shindig! - which should come back from the printers on Monday.

However, I'll tempt you all a little with this quote from Chis about Keith Moon:

"A classic story with Moon - he was playing a Who track quite loudly and
someone shouted, 'Stop playing that bloody awful noise.' Apparently, he
walked out of the door, got into a car which he drove through a plate glass
window. He then got out and said, 'Now that is a fucking awful noise. This
is music!' I thought that was great."

Back (ha ha) in around 1990 there was this new band opening up for the
Gruesomes in Toronto. They were called the Sherlocks, they were from
Montreal and they turned out to be a really cool band! Well, in trying
to impress a certain dark haired girl in the audience the lead guitarist
Devon got a little wacky and ended up falling off the stage, heading
straight for the girl, Richenbacher in hand! Said girl calmly stepped
out of the way, allowing Devon to drop to the floor, but managed to grab
the guitar to save it from a crushing! It was hilarious! And no, he
didn't get the girl...
Bye for now,
Erin

Erin,

Hiya..just wanted to drop you a line saying "hi" and all that
jazz...Saturday's the big day when Sue moves out - yesterday she was
slagging me for a good hour and a half...not sure why at this point, I
guess she feels the need to knock me down to size...at any rate, I'll be
glad when I'm settled in alright in a week or two. I've had to buy a bed
($700), kitchen stuff ($300 and counting) and still have to buy drapes
and a futon...yikes! Good news is that I've been picking up some extra
work on the side and I just got a job worth $1,500. That should set me
up pretty well, I think.

We had our first practice with Ben (drummer boy) and it went really
well. I'm thinking we'll be ready to play in a couple of months. Most of
the originals are sounding top jimmy...he's quite a good drummer and
seems like a nice fellow. I'm just wishing Sandy was a bit better on
bass, but oh well....

How are things going for you? I trust school is keeping you busy as
ever...I got an e-mail from Dave Day of the Monks the other day...asked
him some questions, etc.---hope he writes back.

Sometime in the not too distant future I'd like to plan a Matt Helm
movie night at my place with the gang...of course I'll need said futon
for downstairs by then or we'll all be sitting on the floor. I'll keep
you informed though...I think a 12 martini (just like Dino woulda done)
minimum will be in order...

Take care and write/talk/see you soon,

James of the Planet of the Apes

Syl is alive and well. He lives here in Atlanta. Bad Trip did an extensive
and quite interesting interview with him last year. By the way, Bad Trip is
a great fanzine, and is available at Tower Records so I suggest you all go
pick it up. There is something for everyone. It features articles on great
bands, and funny interviews...everything from modern garage to 70's
rockers, 60's punkers, and 50's r&b greats.

Syl played with the Subsonics at Halloween. They were great. He was the
cheeze meister - very self-indulgent. Most folks left.

He did a mini-set with Syl, Jerry, and some other NYC types (including
now-deceased bassist Tony Coiro, then of Walter Lure's band) at a benefit
for Johnny's kids after Johnny died. This included mainly Dolls' songs.

It is a thin hardback kiddie book with simple words, VERY LARGE TYPE and
lots of color photos. The topic? A TEEN FAIR! circa '64 or '65! There is
a picture of a band on stage (The Mickey Finns), and lots of other cool pix.
A real find! If interested, I might be able to find out copyright date,

The trashiest rock read I've come across in a while is "Be My Baby:
Mascara, Miniskirts and Madness or My Life as a Fabulous Ronette" by
Ronnie Spector. A TOTAL sleaze-fest, complete with sizzling accounts of
her first sexual encounters with that swashbuckling stud Phil Spector,
hotel-room orgies, John Lennon's boners, hair-teasing and
liquid-eyeliner tips, buddying around with Cher, cokin' with David
Bowie..........her descriptions of the innocent beginnings in the early
60's are pretty cool but it quickly degenerates into a late 60's/early
70's recording industry/nightmare marriage/ drug addiction tabloid tale,
but a GREAT toilet paperback or lunchbreak escape.

Penny Stallings. I have the book and it's a very fun read. The cover
promises, "Nothing about Music! Nothing by Hunter S. Thompson!" It has a
who-dealt-with-who chart, along with a chapter on songs recorded by
celebrities, with pictures of the actual records. I have yet to find

I myself have never liked the sound of the DOD anything, especially
the "Classic Fuzz". My fave fuzz pedal is still the Vox and the
Fuzzface. The Yardbox is ok, but all it is an attempt at the Vox Tone
Bender and Fuzzface sound. I also really like the Fuzzrite. I will
have to agree that the best fuzz is achieved by just overdriving the
hell outta yer amp (provided it's the right kind of amp). I have also
gotten a great sound by combining overdrive with a little fuzz. And if
yer feeling adventurous, you can always take a razor blade and put
some slices in yer speaker a la Link Wray or Sonics. I have done this
to amazing results.

Has anyone seen the film, and does anyone know if the soundtrack is yet
available or if the Royal Pendeltons are on it?

Thanks

Sorry Evan but i erased your e-dress so I'm usian the Bomp public address
system to say "Thanks for the tape". It finally arrived yesterday. Boss
sounds. Also, in the new Bomp catalog they got The Boys lp for $12.

Speaking of new items in the catalog, anyone heard that S.African garage
comp (Dinos?)?

And what release has the Sonics version of "Pushin Too Hard"?

Hey!

I was listening to the Lambchop interview on 'Morning Edition' yesterday
and heard that Kurt Wagner installs hardwood floors as a day job.

Anyway, I got to wondering about what the guys in 60's punk bands are
doing now. Not just the guys like Alice Cooper, Jerry Mathers, or Ted
Nugent, but the guys that became dentists and truck drivers.

Does anybody know any guys from obscure bands that stayed obscure. Any
interesting ones?

seeya,
Kip

It must be the same, as Freakout USA is put out by yet another former
Tucsonan. I'll post the particulars when I get 'em.

Recently we were shopping with Dr. Explosion, and, of course hit MANY music
stores. The coolest fuzz we found was thru this little tiny practise amp,
placed in a Marlboro box!!! I think it might be cool to patch that thru a
bigger amp, and see what comes out.

speaking of fuzz, one of the odd things I've seen is a Gibson bass with built
in fuzz. I kid you not! My old bass teacher, Tom Barth of Dover has had since
he was a teen in the sixies. It's called an EB-4f (f for fuzz). It looks like
the regular SG body style except that it's got a little slide switch like a
Jaguar for fuzz. The effect is powered by an on board 9 volt battery and it's
a real wild sound! Anyone know of any other guitars with built in fuzz?

fuzz in my ears and navel.... Moparlary

I really loved the Dolls-they were the best Rock N Roll band I ever saw live.
It was REALLY disapointing when I met Johansen and he was an arrogant jerk.

There was another great rock n roll tabloid type book called (I believe) "Th
Boy Looked at Johnny"-I think it was British. And"Please Kill Me" is probably
THE most entertaining book I've EVER read!
