" The Boy Looked at Johnny" is hilarious. They really go after every sacred
cow they (Tony Parsons and Julie Burchill) can get their hands on.
It was written by two teenagers (both interestingly enough became grumpy
old farts)full of cheap speed and contempt for the the fag end of seventies
rock. They even have a passage about speed being the perfect drug, that
increases your IQ and makes you alert and ready to revolt.
It also turned me on to the Rezillos, for which I am eternally grateful.

Somebody mentioned my favorite new toy - the Smokey Amp - an mini amplifier
built into a cigarette box. It gives amazing fuzz. I got my husband John
one for Christmas and he can't keep me away from it. Not so great for bass
( John loves the Big Muff for that), but quite an amazing and powerful sound
for my geetar. (I do like buying presents for myself...) The "deluxe
model" has input and output so you could use it with a big amp. And it
costs all of $28 (including shipping). Check out www.smokeyamps.com and get
yourself one. I think you even get to choose the cigarette brand....

I have this somewhere - very well written by the one-time enfant terrible
of the NME, Julie Burchill, if I correctly recall. Recommended! Lola

Actually, it was basically the "Tokyo Dolls", David Jo, Syl, Peter Jordan,
Tony Machine and Brian Koonin. They did Personality, Looking For A Kiss,
and, after much prodding from Syl to David, Pills. While Johansen didn't
seem to be in the spirit of the evening, he did rock seriously. It was a
stunning performance.

there were some vox models that had like 8 or 9 effects on them, including
fuzz, wah, and several others. i never have heard the effects but the wah
had this cool triangle thing that operated the wah--sort of like a mini
tremolo arm.

awhile back a guitar store had one, but someone had bypassed all the
effects, so the store was trying to figure out the wiring to hook it all
back up--good luck!!!

there was also a vox bass a friend of mine had that had fuzz but it only
made one note! (may have just been screwed up...)

as mr. chinowski can attest, i am a proponent of the sovtek version (the
original electro-harmonix ones suck in comparison) of the big muff pi for
live use. it's durable as hell (although at a recent practice, it did start
fucking up a bit . . . years of foot abuse/spilled beer maybe finally taking
their toll?), and gives a heavier sound than a lot of the 'boutiquey' fuzz
boxes/reissues that are around now.
i think to take the maximum advantage of it, though, put a slight overdrive
through it first. in a 3 piece setting, to my volume shattered eardrums, a
lot of the fuzzrites/tonebenders sound a bit thin. great for studio stuff,
but a bit too weasley live. of course, nothing beats the foxx tone machine
(with fuzzy blue chassis) for rasp and stunning looks! (but, damn fine
early 70's craftsmanship and crap tin materials equal delicate and caved-in
stomp box retired from ever seeing the beer and crust soaked floor of a
stage again).

Hey, since we're in gear-head mode, what's a good garage amp?

I've been messing on bass for awhile, but a very good friend who's a genuine
rock star (pop-folk-style) gave me a Reverend guitar. This is a new brand
that's build kinda like Danelectros: semi-hollowbody with a masonite kinda
top, back and sides over a wooden center piece. Very nice surfy sounding
guitar. Mine has two humbucker pickups with coil taps for single coil sound,
too.

That said, I ain't never played an electric guitar myself, although I'm a
middlin' bassist.

So, what kinda amp can I get for cheap (several hundred at most) that would
do me well playing the likes of "Gloria" and such in basements and garages?
I'm past 40 so I'm not looking for a step to stardom, but I 'spect I might
have a blast with pals. I'd like to get something that I could use to play a
gig at a local bar or outdoors in a park if that ever happens.

Suggestions for that bomping garage sound?

Thanks.

Subject: Re: Not fuzz, but amp chatter

My first suggestion is to take a Sat afternoon and hit all the music
shops (and maybe pawn shop, depending on the area) that carry used
stuff, and look at any/all the weird amps with names that are not
Fender, Gibson, Vox, etc. Sometimes you can find a really cool amp
that suits yer needs - tone, volume, effects, weight/size, etc -
without having to pay for a name. Make sure to look over the bulletin
boards in those stores, and read the classifieds, too.

It doesn't sound like you need a loud amp like a VOX AC/30 (or Super
Beatle, Vicount, etc), Fender Super, etc. So, take a look at a Fender
Princeton, or a VOX Churchill or Pacemaker. They sound great, and come
without cinderblocks. I think even the VOX's have been reished of late.

For fuzz, I would recommend spending the bread for an original
Tonebender, but you can try to find a no-name, but even those are
getting to be sought after. My fave is a black round one that has no
markings on it whatsoever, except for the "Fuzz" and "Volume" labels
by the knobs. It looks like it might be a prototype, or cheap-o copy
of a FuzzFace. It is the NASTIEST, GNARLIEST, screwdriver-to-the-brain
fuzz I have ever heard - especially when teamed with a VOX guitar and
a solid state VOX amp (trebel boost ON and trebel on 10 of course!).
I also have a matching tremelo box, but it's green!

I also dig the Fuzzrite. I think that's what the Music Machine used.
Regardless, a Fuzzrite really helps you play "Trouble."

But, viva la NoName!

Richard

As for slicing the speakers, I did short slices around the speaker like the
numbers of clock on one amp, then on another, just four fairly long slices
to make it look like you put a square template on your speaker, and sliced
at the edges of the square. Both sounded pretty cool.

As for the DOD fuzz, I have one of those pedals, it's ok by itself, but
coupled with a Vox Valve Tone pedal is awesome, or if you just crank your
amp up along with it. I have a '59 bassman reissue, but I have 2 of the
vintage speakers in it, so when you turn that baby up, it sounds great.
I've heard that the new Danelectro Fab Tone is actually a pretty good little
pedal, but I haven't had the chance to try one out yet.

Actually, had you been there this morning, you could have seen James Brown free
at Savannah State College (my Mother-In-Law's Alma Mater).

The record store findings are rather slim. Endora's Emporium at 35 Montgomery

Subject: Rascals/Sonics connection?

The other day I picked up an old copy of the Young Rascals "Collections"
LP, and I noticed that the last track of side 1 is a medley of "Mickey's
Monkey" and "Love Lights." The latter song is essentially a variation on
Bobby Bland's (and the Human Beinz, and the High Spirits, et al) "Turn On
Your Love Light," but it is credited to "Gerald Roslie."

Gerry Roslie, of course, is the lead singer of the Sonics, and I'm aware
that the Sonics did a song called "Love Lights" on their first Jerden
album. Same song? And is the Rascals version directly based on the Sonics
version? Would that be why it's entitled "Love Lights (Gerald Roslie)"
instead of, say, "Turn On Your Lovelight (Malone-Scott)"?

I just found it interesting to see the name Gerry Roslie connected with the
Young Rascals. It's a good album, but it has as many slow poppy songs as it
has rockin' Atlantic-style R&B.

Rodgers and Hammerstein, or is it Hart. From Carousel or another of
those big musicals. Didn't Gerry and the Pacemakers do this too? Or was
it Herman's Hermits? Or neither? Of course, the BEST is hearing it sung
by Mahalia Jackson, and I don't mean maybe. I used to use her recording
as a part of my MLK day broadcast, without fail.

I have found that if you put 3 or 4 slices around the circumference of
the speaker somewhere midway between the outside edge and the centre
of the cone, you will get great fuzz. Icepick (or screwdriver) holes
work as well. As an addendum, I will not be held responsible if you
screw up yer amp! Some amps might just sound like complete crap no
matter what ya do! But these tips are from experience, so if yer
feeling frisky, give it a go!

This was in the early-to-mid 70s on a US date. He passed out towards the
beginning of the show from animal tranquilizers. A guy from the audience
played the rest of the show, I think with an improvised set list. There's
footage of this show; some of it was shown on VH1's Moon documentary. The
details are in both the "Maximum R&B" book and the newish chronicle of
every Who show ever, compiled by Who superfan "Irish Jack."

I would suggest finding the cheapest tube amp possible. Maybe a Fender
Princeton / Champ / or Pro Jr. The Pro Jr is the cheapest tube amp you can buy
new / it's small but it kicks out a great warm bluesey tone -- no reverb or
tremelo though. The Fender Princeton is a great garage amp and you can pick up
a used one pretty cheap. The Champ can be anything (depending on the era its
from) -- but I'd say its best to go for the cheapest tube amp you can find --and
these Fenders are usually the cheapest tube amps you can find--except for some
possible crazy pawn shop amp which you would just have to play for yourself and
if you dig it go for it.

No, this is not true, as Willie Bobo had recorded this earlier. It was
written by Sonny Henry. I don't know if this is the song that was recorded
by Mariane, though.

Speakers are pretty cheap to repair, so if you screw up your speaker just yank
it out and spend the 20 bucks (or less) to have it re-coned. I say slice that
sucker. Little Fender Squire solid states are well worth slicing.

Ray Davies describes in his recent story-tour (now on CD), how brother
Dave took a hat pin and poked several holes in their little green amp to
create a sound that renamed the amp "the Fart Box". It's been confirmed
that this amp was used on the "You Really Got Me" session, I don't know
when they stopped using it.
Better to practice this technique on your practice amp than on your
Fender Twin.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the arrangment supposed to have been
credited to "The Animals" but someone pulled a fast one and Columbia (EMI)
stuck "arr Price" on the record label. Furthermore, and adding a little
insult to injury, it is claimed that Hilton Valentine was responsible for
the arpeggio riff.

The event is kinda steep at $60 for a three-day pass, but when you consider
the incredible lineup I suppose it's well worth the money! The Gold Coast
hotel has rooms for $65 a night. So for a couple, when you consider tickets
plus hotel, it's $315, and that's not including the airfare, food, and other
expenses, so unless we come across a huge windfall in money (maybe we'll win
the lottery) between now and then, I don't think we'll be able to afford it,
especially since we're also saving up for a trip to the Seattle/Vancouver
area sometime this year. Ouch.

The Las Vegas Grind website is now open.

http://www.lasvegasgrind.net/

On the site you can see the line up and provisional time-table and securely
book online for the entertainment and hotel.

If you intend to come to the Grind then I would advise you to book the Gold
Coast hotel as soon as possible because these rooms will go very quickly.
The Gold Coast will not charge your card until the week of the event.

The response to this show has been quite staggering so far, especially as
we haven't undertaken any promotion yet. If it's sister event 'Viva Las
Vegas' is anything to go by then this festival will be a great success for
all.

BANNERS

There are several banners on the website that you can use for your own page
and I would be very gateful if you would link to the site to get the word
out about the festival which will be the talk of the scene for a long time.
If you let me know that you have linked then I will be happy to link back.

FLYERS

If you are a promoter, DJ or Radio station or just have lots of friends and
would like flyers about LVG then please reply with your mail address.

I would also be grateful for any suggestions about the structure and
content of the site, so please email me with your comments.

Hope to see yout there,

Amos

Link Wray poked holes in his amp's speaker to record "Rumble".

speaking of fuzz, one of the odd things I've seen is a Gibson bass with built
in fuzz. I kid you not! My old bass teacher, Tom Barth of Dover has had since
he was a teen in the sixies. It's called an EB-4f (f for fuzz). It looks like
the regular SG body style except that it's got a little slide switch like a
Jaguar for fuzz. The effect is powered by an on board 9 volt battery and it's
a real wild sound! Anyone know of any other guitars with built in fuzz?

Electra had a guitar in the mid 70s with built in effects.
I did not own one of these, but I recall it being a LesPaul copy
with plug in units in the back (under a hatch). Knobs on front gave
you contol. I don't recall any of the effects in detail, but one
was called "Tank Tone". I remeber thinking, do they mean a steal
tank or an army tank? I still wounder how that sounds.
