I don't disagree with this and have used this method on *REALLY* crusty and
nasty records. However, for the average used record that comes into my
house, I use the below method, which I did hundreds of times every day when
I worked at Papa Jazz Record Shoppe.

Dug this up from the archives:

Ah, a twist on last years how to clean vinyl thread!

It's fairly easy to rid yourself of that pesky mildew smell associated with
the long forgotten basement albums. First, throw away the inner sleeve if
it's there--it's a lost cause, and you can always replace it. Next, clean
the album (I'm pasting in my post on this from last year). Forewarning:
Prepare to sneeze during this next part.

Now here's the fun part many people overlook. The LP cover. Take a dry
cotton cloth and give a good once over to the outside of the cover. You'll
be amazed at what you get off. Depending on what the cover is made of
(e.g. whether it's laminated or not, sturdy or not, etc) you can
*sometimes* get away with using a small amount of evenly distributed
dampness on the cloth to pull away extra grime. Now, hold the cover flat
to you with the opening facing one side, the bottom against your chest and
the top in your hand. If you then push the cover open, you'll most likely
see a fair amount of white residue inside. There's the mildew you're
*really* smelling. Turn the cloth around to a clean side, stick it in the
cover and wipe it away. It will come off very easily. Wipe out both inner
sides well and you're done. Here again, you can get away with a small
amount of dampness to the cloth, but not wet. You especially don't want
any significant amount of dampness left inside the LP cover.

That's basically it. Use a new poly bag around the LP cover, but yeah, you
can let it air out for a while too and you'll be much more pleased with
your new old record. Oh, wash your hands when you're done :^)

Now here's the majority of the post I sent out on cleaning records last year.

I always use a mixture of *distilled* water and isopropyl (and don't
substitute everclear either) at a ratio to about 8:1. I keep the mixture in
a spray bottle (check the garden department of Wal Mart) and use soft cotton
cloth to lightly wipe the records.

The reason for the alcohol is a) to help evaporate the water quicker and b)
it does help loosen dirt a bit better. Distilled water is used because tap
water sucks and contains too many particles/dirt already.

- -- Only apply pressure on stubborn fried chicken finger prints and
especially messy areas, and then let drops of the solution sit on the
record.
- -- Unless you get the cloth very dirty, only wash it with fabric softener,
and no detergent. You can use a small amount of detergent every few
washes though. Old T Shirts aren't recomended. Buy a yard of cotten
cloth from the fabric store. Your records deserve the extra expense.
- -- Always wipe the record lightly (let the weight of the cloth do the real
work) with the grooves of the record. Wiping across the grooves risks
scratches and will only grind the dirt in further.
- -- Leave one side of the record dry for wiping off excess solution, dirt and
preventing water streaks on the record. Do as much as you can with as
few rotations around the record as possible. Go around the record a few
times, then flip the cloth to the dry side to finish.
- -- Don't let the cloth get too wet, as you'll put dirt back down, and the
cloth won't be very absorbant. Save wetter areas for dirtier records.
If you cut the cloth to a good size, you can fold it over itself and
use multiple sides of the same cloth. I always used a cloth about
the size of an LP and folded it over about 4 times.
- -- Don't use your fingernails if at all possible.
- -- For sticky areas (gross!) use a very very small, tiny amount of lighter
fluid. Again, not on 78's, as they aren't made of the same material.

For 78's use mildly soapy water, but not so soapy that it is sudsy! Soak
the record (and not the inner label, which means, hold it!) for a few
seconds and gently wipe clean.

That should about cover it.

Sean Bonniwell wrote me a letter a while ago, and said that, for a decade,
he has been working on, "Beyond the Garage (an autobiographical novel)". He
also said that he was doing the publishing himself, and that he thought that
it would be out in late summer. Of course this was last summer, and to the
best of my knowledge, no "beyond the garage" book has been released.

He also said that Sundazed might still release a MM CD called Ignition,
which might be what I've heard the buzz about on here and other places. I
didn't know that he put out a different book a long time ago. He said
something about the "Beyond the Garage" book being a second edition, maybe
that was what he was refering to. I guess time wil tell.

"Greatest Hits" was their first album. What a sense of humour those guys
had! Initially 500 copies were pressed - the sleeves of most of these were
hand-made. The ones they sold while on tour in Germany, for instance, were
plain white sleeves which the three of them had 'scribbled' on. Another 500
copies were then pressed with printed sleeve (blue and pink) - this is the
one that I have. It was then pressed a third time and issued on Billy's
Hangman label, 1000 copies, re-mixed and therefore sounding slightly
different.

The Get Hip release is a re-release (I think) of the compilation of Pop
Rivets tracks that came out on Jim's Records.

Well, "Zip-A-Dee-Do-Dah" (the R&B version) was a hit for Bobb B. Soxx and
the Blue Jeans, protegees of Phil Spector, in 1962 or so. Don't ask me why,
but quite a few British groups picked it up, including Freddie and the
Dreamers and the Big Three (it's on the latter's "At The Cavern" EP). It
was so popular among Liverpool groups that various non-British groups have
covered it including Germany's Rattles, and Japan's answer to the
modern-day Kaisers, the Neatbeats, who do it on their "Far and Near" LP.

"Like, Long Hair" isn't exactly something that would appeal to garage-band
fans. As I'm sure some know on this list, long hair has nothing to do with
the current hair fashions (it wasn't an issue in pre-Beatlemania America),
but refers to the hipster's phrase for classical music. To me, it harkens
back to ragtime piano, and sounds so unlike the Paul Revere and the Raiders
that people got to know on "Where The Action Is."

There were a couple of followups to "Like, Long Hair," namely "Like,
Charleston" and "Like, Bluegrass," both on Gardena in 1961 and 1962,
respectively. Interestingly, Mark Lindsay seemed to be relegated to singing
on the b-sides ("Midnite Ride" was the flip of "Like, Charleston").

While I'm aware that the Gardena stuff has been reissued before, the
Sundazed compilation is supposed to be definitive, including a bunch of
unreleased stuff. If they'd only hurry up and put it out, I wouldn't _need_
to seek out earlier reissues.

Not trying to. The question was asked whether "Nip" is a derogatory term
(my understanding is that it is) and I wouldn't call any German a Kraut,
regardless of where the comp was made. In a field under a field that has
foul language, misogyny, not a whole lot of black people, none too many
women, next to no mentions of Christianity, it would be foolish for ME to
insinuate that. After all, we are talking about a genre named for a
euphemism for sex (Rock 'n' Roll)!

Still don't like either name, but you're also dealing with a guy that
doesn't dig the language or artwork on the BFTG's and I have bought those.

The tan gent with a tangent adds:

My theory is that firstly, it was a hit and one that could get airplay in a
climate that saw "Wild Thing" banned for being naughty. Secondly, it was a
Phil Spector and just as Germans love David Hasselhoff, the UK loved Phil
Spector as the US did. "Oo-Chang-A-Lang" by the Blue Orchids is great
faux-Spector (UK), as is "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" by the Walker
Brothers(US). Why that particular song? I don't know. Why did "Some
Other Guy" become so very covered in the UK and slip away almost unnoticed
in its homeland (outside of the fact that Richard Barrett sounds a bit like
Ray Charles on the record and we had Ray Charles already!).

Here is another related question; was "Song of the South" a box office hit
on re-release there?

Using that to test speakers is a great idea! The intro alone to "Patricia
Ann" would be enough to tell whether a set of speakers is worth considering.

Among new stuff I really liked the Spaceshits' new LP "Misbehaving"! And I
have to agree with what was said about the Lightning Beat-Man &
the Never heard of 'Ems "Apartment Wrestling Rock'n'Roll" LP. The "techno
mix" at the end of this record is one of the funniest things I've listened
to lately.

My niece Vivian, who is three was broadcasting from my house on Sunday.
She told me, "We Have to Find the Dinosaur Song". Well, I don't know what
she's talking about half the time anyway and the listening audience was
only three people, but this is what we played:

Savvy Show Starter:
"No, Uncle Bian, we have to find the dinosaur song!"

We then played:

Olatunji-Owo-Owo - Jack Magee All Stars (Star)
Whip it On Me, Baby - O'Jays (Imperial)
I See the Light - Five Americans (HBR)

There was a station break and then dead air, because the DJ's parents
picked her up. Overall, it was her best show, even if it was culled from
my collection. I am convinced that good taste runs in our family, though.

Sadly, the Real Audio broadcast of this failed, for while everything was
configured properly, the computer was in another room and turned off.

Hey,

Anybody have a more specific Real Audio location for CKUT-FM in Montreal?
I tried listening to my pal, Flipped Out's legendary "Subterranean Jungle"
radio show last night, but the dang home-page ("under construction) has no
text or underlined link to the Real Audio location. It must have been one
of those image buttons that you visually-dependent folks can "click" on
with a robotic rodent. I usually go straight to Mimi's show via
www.cismfm.qc.ca/live.ram, thus by-passing the station's hard-to-navigate
home page. Does anyone have a similar short-cut to the way-out crazy
sounds on CKUT?

Much thanks in advance.

I suggest that some high heeled black shoes and a riding whip will coax Mr.

You know, I've had a similarly weird Shaggs experience. My sister's best
friend has this totally preppy boyfriend. He was the head of Clinique in
Canada for some time (I'm trying to create an
image here), and is, well, a bit on the feminine side (shall we say). Well,
I just think of him liking
say, Wham instead of the Shaggs. One day a few years back he called me up
to say he'd gotten
this fabulous new CD by an all-girl group called the Shaggs. He'd wondered
if I'd ever heard of
'em???!!!!
Boy, was I suprised!
