Yeah, the new Monsters is very good, agree about the new Spaceshits too,
this baby "Misbehavin" is a real classic already, but check out the new
Plungers LP called "Lets Get Twisted With The Plungers" which is coming out
this month, its a RNR blast!

Hi gang,
just to clear a few things from the beginning: nobody over
here cares being called a 'Kraut', but me and everyone else will
be highly offended if you say we're David Hasselhoff fans =o)
Honest, this 'Hasselhoff is a superstar in Germany'-thing is a
urban legend that a lot of Americans take for granted.

This is my first post to the list, allow me to introduce myself:
I'm Jens from Stuttgart, Germany (as you've probably already
realized), well, in general I'd say I listen to all kinds of
Rock'n'Roll, my favourites (at the moment!) are british
garage-trash bands of the 80's like the Prisoners, Stingrays,
Delmonas,..., but it's said that I'll show up everywhere if
there's a microphone stand and a drumkit on a stage. I put up
smaller gigs in my area sometimes and try to enlighten the
masses with my DJing every now and then.
Oh, and I wanna definitely go to Vegas on halloween.

Thanx for listening.

The Nerves were Peter Case, Jack Lee (who wrote "HOTT") and Paul Collins -
sort of a pop supergroup. Both Collins and Case, to this day, will tell you
Lee was the best songwriter among the three.

I dunno what the statute of limitations is on using a band name, but I
remember buying a White Trash record a few years ago thinking that I missed
one of Edgar Winter's records the first time through, and got pedestrian
thud rock instead. Felt like *I* wanted to sue the little bastards myself!

He certainly wrote some good ones. That disc that came out in the early
90s (Perfect Pop or some such name) on Revenge (I think) was excellent. It
had The Nerves, some early Plimsouls, and a whole bunch of Jack Lee,
including a favorite of mine, "Gonna Have Fun" (covered live by the Full
Time Men for quite some time). Unfortunately, a friend of mine said Lee
was a disappointment on a French tour some years ago.

Hee! I didn't know that. I was making a cheap gag (it was a running joke
on Saturday Night Live). I didn't think that folks would take Norm
MacDonald seriously. I am curious about one thing, does the sentence mean
"Nobody over here cares FOR being called a 'Kraut'" or "Nobody over here
cares if they are being called a 'Kraut'"?

Of course, this doesn't list the 45s (like "All Kindsa Girls") or the
stuff on the Live at the Rat LP. Nor does it include the live disc on
Norton, or any of the singles that were released from that in the 90s.

John did record a record with his band, The Devotions, a couple years back
(I think Steve Wynn produced), but I don't believe it's been released.
When I talked to John at the Real Kids' shows in September, he said they
might record a new record this year. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Have to agree with Brian here. The greatness of the sounds overcomes my
qualms about the artwork and sleeve notes on the BFTGs. As this thread was
about racism it has to be said that I don't believe Tim Warren to be racist
at all (as if his homophobia isn't bad enough - I do think he must have
some sort of psychological problem there), though he is somewhat intolerant
of those who don't conform to his way of thinking - but then that's how
racism can start. As for being "PC", I think the term works against what it
really means - that is: having consideration and respect for other people
no matter what their differences are. (There are some exceptions though -
I have absolutely no respect for anyone who listens to the Spice Girls...)

I heard this from the folks at Mademoiselle Records who had a message left
on their telephone answering machine from one of the other members of the
group. Obviously they are all very upset about it and so I haven't asked
for any further details. Lulus Marble played in London several times and
they were great fun to have as guests at the Dirty Water Club. They were
all so pleased that I managed to persuade Billy Childish to have them as
support to Thee Headcoats (he normally would never have a support band that
he doesn't know) and Billy himself ended up smiling broadly throughout
their show (another rare event). She was very sweet, always cheerful,
modest and self-effacing - and able to charm the pants off any man in the
room. It's very sad to think that we won't be seeing her again...

I found one of their earliest records on Vault for a quarter and while I
feel I paid the right price for it, it actually is not that bad.

For those wondering about the subject line, sans the buddy, that was the
name of the book that the Association wrote. I found it at a Pic 'n' Save
for 49 cents and lost it, so all I remember is the title.

Doctor Glynis,

Mr. Beaton has fallen under the powerful charms of La Twisteuse, I'm
afraid...after hypnotising him with 10 hours of non-stop 60's videos,
the man wants to go back to garage. True story.

His ska band The Kingpins were nice enough to invite me to their photo

I was a bit disappointed after listening to it, I think 'Youth
Against Nature' had more different facettes in it, 'Birds
Against Martians' sounds more like straight forward garage
punk, without looking left or right. But maybe it's one of those
records that have to grow on me.

Definitely the most played item on my stereo at the moment is
the promo-CD of the Defectors from Denmark. They are in the
studio at the moment to mix their debut, which should be out in
a few months and will definitely be a record to watch out for,
if you like stuff like the Gravedigger V etc.

yeah, have 2 of their early discs and they're pretty good. I was never a fan,

yeah, i can relate to this... i really dig the tunes on the bftg series,
and i think the teenage shutdown series totally smokes -- it has upped
the ante on sound quality, packaging, supplied info, etc.
i own all volumes in each series, respectively.

although alotta my bread has ended up in the crypt records' bank
account, i always thought the all the artwork/rants on bftg were pretty
lame-ass on a ideological level(if taken with poker-face seriousness)and
amusing on the bait/provoke/extremism level... it sorta set a trend for
a narrow, revisionist history of supposedly what "garage" and "'60s
punk" was all about; what's cool; and what you, as a fan, should and
should not listen to... it never really made sense to me because words
like "garage" and "'60s punk", which were developed by "historians",
only hold meaning as retroactive terms....

the greatness of the music speaks for itself, by itself... not because
everything that came after it supposedly sucks....

Yep, I did forget to mention Felice's involvement on Turban Renewal. If I
recall, he did Little Red Riding Hood with Andy Shernoff on bass.

He was also the 15 year-old guitar player in the original lineup of hte
Modern Lovers, explaining his appearance on Precise Modern Lovers Order
(and the other version of the same disc... was the name Live at the Long
Branch Saloon?)

Yes, and you gotta wonder what genius tunes like that and "Along Comes
Mary," "Windy", etc woulda sounded like in the hands of Ed Cobb with
the Chocolate WatchBand.

I say that in reference to a massive interview/article/history of the
CWB in the very excellent Cream Puff Wars, where it's mentioned that
one time some of the guys were hangin' on the Strip, and some other
guys were trying to sell them some songs. The CWB turned them down,
and later found out that those guys ended up forming the Association!

My other fave tidbit from that is that they used to head down to LA
just to shop and hang out on the Strip, and they'd all go out to
dinner, and when presented with the check, one of them would say to
the waitress in a British accent something like, "Luv, don't you know
who we are?" The wait staff would then think they were the Rolling
Stones!! Usually, they'd get to eat for free after autographing
aprons, napkins, and tableclothes!!

... talking about comps, what's your point of views about the
new bunch of them that came out a few weeks/days ago:

- - Searching For Love (US bands from the mid-60s)
- - Red With Purple Flashes (60s mod music)
- - Return Of The Amphetamine Generation (rare UK freakbeat punk and R&B)
- - Bad Vibrations (US 60s punk)
- - Untamed & Innocent (CD, mod & beat UK stuff)
- - ISSS 11, Crimson Creature in Your Zoo (UK pop psy)

anything missing that worth a spin ?
Any infos of what's in the pipeline for the forthcoming weeks ? (W. Volkel
customers should know...)

I'll agree with Mike on just about all of this. However, I'd like to point
out that I've never taken the liner notes on BFTG seriously; like Mike
said, they're amusing "on the bait/provoke/extremism level."

Unfortunately, the narrow-minded viewpoint has been taken all too
literally by a newer generation of garage fans. Personally, I think Tim's
a good guy; I've known him for a pretty long time. We don't always agree
about music, but that's OK, since there's virtually nobody who has my
exact tastes in music (nor does that matter to me.) I just wish that some
people would get beyond thinking of Tim as some type of god (and, from
some things I've read in 'zines and on-line over the past 4-5 years, there
definitely is such a faction). It just seems like it's become a party line
and people have started using it to define themselves rather than thinking
independently.

Subject: For my Bompz

>Is "niggaz" derogatory too? Just wondering..

As much as I was trying to avoid this, it managed to pop up. To quote
Charles Barkley, "I am not a role model", nor am I by default the
spokesperson for my race, but since I am at the very least, qualified to
talk about it, here goes:

"Nigger" is without a doubt derogatory. So is "nigra" and "jigaboo". Many
a Klansmen, songwriter and ad person have used these and to a person, we
have all hated these and other terms.

"But hey, Brian, I have heard other Black people using Nigger. What about
that?"

Well, you must consider the source. Here is the unwritten code:

African-Americans sometimes do use that word, but if the person is friendly
to the other, it is usually not taken the wrong way. However, while I am
friendly with my Pastor, I would NOT use it on him.

One does not call the other a nigger in front of someone of another ethnicity.

Can it be used in anger? You betcha!

Now a while back (let's say the late 80's) a movement started to reclaim
the stereotypes and the terms used to hurt my people. I see the point in
the sense of empowerment and definition, so if 2Pac issues an album "...For
My Niggaz", he is using it in this sense: "That term no longer hurts me, as
a matter of fact, I take that, assimilate it and I use it. It binds us,
for we have all been called it and yet we don't wish to be perceived as
"Just a nigger" ". That's how I took it, anyway.

Chris Rock, however, uses the term in this context, "I love Black people,
but I hates me some niggers!", as in, "If you act in poor fashion, ___ will
think badly of ALL of us!" I see his point, too.

How do I feel about the word? Let's put it this way:

I can spend my money where I please, I can vote, own a house, pray, pay
taxes, protest if I disagree with something and walk around at night
(unless if I am in San Diego or Los Angeles; I have been stopped quite a
few times for that).

ALL of the above has been achieved at a high price: humiliation, lynching,
beating, murder, injustice, lying. You name it. Many folks have died
hearing that word, many folks have died thinking that they weren't worthy
of being called anything better than that. I had a cousin whose real NAME
I don't know because until he went to school, it was changed for him,
because his identity was not important enough to the person calling his
name in school.

Don't argue to me about etymology of the word, because in the end, it
doesn't make a lick of difference when you see someone swinging in the
breeze for the crime of being born (lynching still goes on by the way, it
just isn't "news")

I really (multiplied by 342) didn't want to talk about this on a music
list, but you asked and I felt this needed an answer and I also have to
sleep at night.

Not saying that you did, but DON'T you DARE call me a nigger. Not even as
a joke. Anyone who knows me knows this and if you don't, I am telling you now.

Brian Phillips

P.S. I am also hip to the folks that want to go ahead and use "nigger" on
me after explictly saying NOT to. I don't do rude well and I do cliche'
worse. OK?
