While it's true that most rekkids are made out of vinyl, I've also
come across a handfull of 'polystyrene' pressings. 'Styrene records
can be identified by their flat, instead of sharp, edges, and molded
'labels'. They're also notorious for getting really, really hissy
after a few plays. I don't know offhand if any companies ever made
'styrene, or if they're all the ones I saw were just boots, though.

It would also be a shame to forget plexi-discs! I have no idea what
they're made of, or who came up with the idea to put sheets of plastic
on a turntable, but I'll die before one gets close to my stylus! I
tried to play one I got from McDonald's on my dad's turntable when I
was a little kid, and he just about strangled me. I guess that's where
I get my obsessive record care-streak from.

Whoever mentioned using photo-flo--that's a great idea, as that stuff
is designed to help film dry without any water spots. Do any bompers
have one of those outrageously expensive vaccum record cleaning devices?

On an entirely unrelated note, are any other bompers gonna be at the
Carbondale Pootinanny show, besides Kyle C. & I? It's about time a
decent band comes to this frat-hole! :-)

Ciao,

Subject: re: real kids

a couple of other noteworthy items you probably already have, but are worth
mentioning:

grown up wrong (norton) - this includes a radio show they did as well as
several live tracks. if you're thinking about picking this up, the cd
version includes something like 10 cuts that aren't on the vinyl version,
and lots of those tracks are really great (if lacking a little in sound
quality).

there are also a couple of 7"s on dog meat recs that feature some really
great live versions of some of their classic tracks (one repeated from the
grown up wrong rec).

john felice is the ultimate "guy gets dicked over by girl" songwriter. i've
got just about everything he has ever done. while i like it all, i'd say
that the 2 norton discs are the very best stuff i've ever heard by them.

i've heard that norton may be putting out some additional stuff too.
hopefully it will include the stuff from the great real kids/taxi boys split
12". the taxi boys cuts from that are available on another 12" from bomp
mailorder for cheap.

funny story: i had never heard of the real kids until the norton reissue of
the first rec came out. when i saw it at the record store i took it to the
counter and asked the 2 guys standing there how it was. without even
looking at each other they both assumed air guitar poses and yelled, "it
ROCKS!!!" i was so blown away by that record i went out and maxed a credit
card on a rickenbacker about 3 weeks later...

i could go on and on about this great band...

Gotta agree with Blair-Tim's mindless endless rantings over The
Fuzztones,Miracle Workers and other 80's garage bands is really stupid! You'd
think someone with his musical taste would target Rap, Alternative, and Spice

disses the Fuzztones...Whatever he thinks of Rudi, one thing is for

You know how well I FULLY agree. It's been very difficult explaining all
this to the children in my neighbourhood. They call each other that darned
word, and it is meant like a swear word. It has become part of the
unacceptable language (hey, they hang out in front of my house yelling and
screaming so I figure I gotta right to lay down the rule, SOMEBODY's got to
around here!!). In
the same terms they are not to refer to me as being "white" because they
are now using that as

It's not about the language per se, it's about respect.
I can't STAND the covers on those Back From The Grave's. It took me a long

Eamon, you forgot to mention shellac discs, as well...although they're mostly
not very applicable to garage/freakbeat/psych recordings, as it was used for
pressing 78s, but then again they were still making 78s in South Africa into
the mid-60s, so...anybody know if there are any elusive S. African Standells
78s circulating around out there?

Here is a twist on this story, as told by Johnny Otis:

Back in the 1930's, Chick Webb's band was traveling in the deep Southern
United States by bus. Webb was sleeping in the back and the bus had to
stop for gas and food. They stopped and the driver (one of the musicians
in Webb's band) was told by one of the employees, upon seeing all of the
Black people on the bus, "Boy, you can't get any food or gas here." The
driver said, "Do you know who I am?"

"No." said the employee.

"I'm Duke Ellington, that's who!", said the musician.

"Nope, never heard of you.", said the employee and with that the bus drove
off to find another rest stop.

A voice came from the back of the bus. It was Webb, who was apparently
awake, who said:

"You might as well have told him it was Chick Webb."

Hmm... is Andre Williams supposed to actually be a part of this? I ask 'cuz
the Coney Island High website (and Sidewalk.com) lists him as playing there
tomorrow night (3/5), which would mean Andre was finishing up in NYC
late-nite, then waking up and flying right to LA.

Anyone know more? I ask only 'cuz I'm thinking of hitting CI High tomorrow
for Andre, but I'm gonna be kinda worn out (it's Soccer Marathon weekend at
the school I teach at and I'm playing in the student-faculty game at 8,
then returning the following day at noon to chaperone and hang out) and I'm
not even going to make the effort if Andre's not playing.

How about the ones that came on cereal boxes (cardboard, at least as a

words like kike , nigger ect... those are hard words to use, but I am Jewish
, don't ever think of calling me that, well. as in the old west those are
fighting words, but context is important, if I am reading about nazis, I
don't expect them to use polite words like "Judaic religion." or if it's set
a hundred years ago, Christians can call us Christ killers ect.. but it's
important as the context itt's used in. I rarely hear Jews call each other
kike ect, like some blacks call each other,. sometimes , I can understand
how many would feel upset about it, if I was black I sure would too. Racism,
anti-Semitism are destructive forces, and harmful to all, so we must be
careful of how it's portrayed. Still the message is more important than the
word itself ., mark twain used the "n" word because it was used in Missouri
in 1830's, but Jim is no "Niger" he is a human being to Hulk, and tom sawyer
and also to mark twain and to every one of us., Hulk Finn is a prohuman
anti slavery ect book if you really read it . unfortinatly some people just
see the word "nigger" and not read the book a shame realy

Mr. Dianda asks

Question: Does anyone in Bomp!land have any info about a band called
"The Fringe" from Canada I assume,as they were on that Guess Who
tv show hosted by Chad Allen after he left..around 67-68...they apparantly
put down>some very mighty Pretty Things (S.F.Sorrowish)psyche.......???

Gaven:

The Fringe had two singles and one very, very rare EP. Their psych is more
of the typical "lighter" weight Toronto psych (as opposed to that
blues/jazz/fusion psychy thing a lot of bands displayed, and not any of
that folk psych crap either. More poppy I'd say.

There was Flower Generation/Token For My Mind
Plastic People/Nancy Brown

and the EP had Token For My Mind/Effective Dreaming/I Don't Want To/and a
version of Inside Lookin' Out.
The only place that any Fringe material was ever re-released to my
knowledge is on the Nightmares From The Underworld volume 3 which was a
privately circulated cassette which had
"Inside Lookin' Out" and "Plastic People". I have heard "Token For My Mind"
and totally dug it.

I don't know anyone who knows anything else about the band!

Have a good night and don't forget to Dream Effectively tonight,

Glynis

Hi,

i'm not sure how much this is going to appeal to all the grageheads out
there but i seem to remember something on the webpage mentioning the
spacemen 3 so.....

I saw a couple of bands tonight: Johnny Domino (fairly typical "aren't we
whacky angular indie-types?" er, no) and Cato

Now if you have a soft spot for guitarry-soundscapes with a bass and drums
(and i am so ashamed of the number of times i've ordered drinks from the
drummer in the niterie she works without knowing she was such a great
drummer) which actually *add* to the sound rather than just filling in then
Cato's yr band.
from very trippy washes of quiet noise to all-out velvets/sp3 feedback fed
crescendos, they did it very nicely.

and, erm that's it

andrew (slipping off to sleep with the sounds of Kaleidoscope (the UK
variety))

First of all, gotta agree with the respect thing Glynis is talking about
here. While I'm all for the raw and fun (ie. not to be taken too
seriously) underpinnings of rock & roll, there's nothing wrong with lettin'
each other know when we're really steppin' over the line to offensiveness.
So right on, Brian. I don't even know (or care) what those BFTG albums
look like and I've had 'em all for about 13 years (shows I couldn't see all
that well in the eighties either!). And hopefully, people that dig garage
music won't take Tim's rants too seriously. yeah, we should take things in
the sometimes funny (often for shock value) spirit in which they are
intended, but let's also be mindful of what we write and how it might
affect or offend each other. I don't like the names of some comps, but I
can recognize tongue-in-cheek or twisted terms of endearment when I hear
'em. On the other hand, it's good to keep each other in line when
potentially hurtful things appear to be said on the list just to provoke
reaction. Common courtesy and rock & roll aren't mutually exclusive.

Rocky.

It's called "That's Totally Pop" and yes, it rules!

Hi Sylvain,
one new comp that just has been offered is "I´m trippin´ alone", a 14 US
60´s garage/psych rarities comp on Spangle! Just have ordered it for my
mailorder! And by the way: The new Monsters LP totally rocks, it varies a
lot in styles, the sound is super (and I can tell after listening to sooooo
mucho crap of lowlowlowlowno-fi during the last months..), yep, everything´s
perfect! Another smasher for me was The Demonics album on Man´s Ruin (maybe
from 98..), just for those , who care! And a big welcome to Jens from
Stuttgart, another "kraut"!? No, I´m not listening to "krautrock" & will
never do....
