Well, let's not write him off completely. He was and is a great fan of the
wonderfully surrealist Goon Show, a radio program of the fifties that
featured Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe.

Who could be completely unhip with plots like these:

  - Two characters race to reach the age of 21 first.
  - A lucrative trade is set up to import British snow to the Sahara.
  - A fellow is determined to conquer Mount Snowden, by eating it.
  - A material called "Scradje" is used to decrease the instances of shoes
and boots exploding.

He would have been just 11 by the time show was cancelled, but if you were
Randy California, in two or three years, you'd be playing guitar with
Spirit, so feh on the age issue. Also, John Lennon was a big Goon Show
fan, too.

Prince Charles did some acting in Cambridge, as well. So while none of
this puts him foimly in the hip firmaMINT (Hi, all you "Singin' in the
Rain" fans!), it may not be likely, but possible.

Hey, you forgot the android sex slaves!

(From an AP article on Millennium celebrations:)

In San Francisco, the Ad Hoc Committee Against the New Millennium staged a
solemn march against the whole thing.

''Growing up in the '60s and '70s we were promised things like rocket
cars, space travel, alien encounters ... android sex slaves,'' said Horace
Higginbottom, who thinks the world has been cheated out of the future.

''What do we get instead? They gives us the lousy Internet, crummy
e-commerce.''

at either Burton Cummings or Randy Bachman, and so he

To recap the chain of events, coz I think it was me yer referring to... but
I don't think it was a lot of time, 3 posts maybe...

I posted that I thought the Guess Who were crap and especially after Burton
joined (someone else chimed in that Chad Allan was the real weenie), and
because I live here in Winnipeg and have had to put up with the "greatest
thing ever to come out of Winnipeg" for years, when they really contributed
virtually nothing to the scene once they became successful, and usually only
come back to grab some cash or publicity... Have you followed any of the
Bachman vs BTO saga at all? What a fucking joke that is, and Fred Turner is
one of the nicest guys you'd ever wanna meet.

It so happened that, because I get the digest version and others get the
emails individually, that folks were offended thinking I was slagging other
listers off when I really wasn't! It was just the way the emails were
received... I just can't stand the Guess Who -- and loads of other locals
don't either by the way. Mike Furnish (local) chimed in with his support
and the correction on my erroneous "Herzog" info by the way.... Tho Jeff
"Electrophonic Tonic" (local) has yet to comment on the GW's coolness level
as far as he is concerned. Jeff?

Burton has been on the radio here pretty much non-stop for the past 6
months playing loads of his own stuff and collecting large... . He did
recently owned up to the Zep rip off (another band I don't enjoy by the
way - tho I love Page's Yardbirds work) that "American Woman" is - and - the
fact that he doesn't really even like the song very much!
Also in his defence - also posted here - he has played some great stuff
that "oldies" radio seldom plays.
Alongside a host of cool R&B, local things like the Quid etc.., and more
obscure numbers, he has played a rare Bachman instro called "Made In
England" that is basically a tribute to the Shadows. IT"S BRILLIANT!
I'll admit to a new found respect for Burton and the Guess Who after
listening to him co-host but I still don't really dig their stuff very
much... I think I have every right to listen to what I enjoy and state why
(whether the reasons make sense to anyone outside my hometown or not) I
don't enjoy their music...
To each his own... eh?

I wonder if anyone else has any comments on their own "local heroes" that
many of us enjoy but they feel are somewhat less than "heroic"?

All the best,

Colin

Subject: Some Odd Lots bargain tapes/Sundazed 2000

Anyone ever find any goodies in their local Odd Lots stores? They've always
got a nice selection of cutout and bargain CDs and tapes for $6.99 and
$2.99 respectively. Lots of R&B, soul and country, but occasionally some
rock and roll. Just the other day I actually found some 99 cent cutout Sony
tapes of "Begin" by The Millennium, "Supersnazz" by the Flamin' Groovies,
and "Gene Clark With The Gosdin Brothers."

The first is a 1967 Gary Usher/Curt Boettcher project, similar to their
other project Sagittarius, with some of the music being a mite heavier than
the latter's dreamy psych-pop. There are a couple of unreleased tracks on
the tape. "Supersnazz" is the official debut of the legendary Flamin'
Groovies, with a mix of blues/folkrock/rockabilly flying in the face of all
that was trendy in '68. The one-time songwriting genius of the Byrds teamed
up with the country/bluegrass fiddlers for his solo debut in 1966, carrying
on the move towards country-rock that his bandmates had previously only
dabbled in but would later dive into with 1968's "Sweetheart Of The Rodeo."

Clark, the Gosdins and other musicians, including session whiz Glen
Campbell and present/future Byrds Chris Hillman and Clarence White, don't
stray _too_ far from the jangly chiming folk-rock of the Byrds, so it's
worth checking out by fans of McGuinn, Crosby and company. Sony might also
consider reissuing this as a companion to their ongoing Byrds project. I'm
sure this and the Millennium/Groovies albums were also reished on CD at the
time (1991) but it's high time they all got the deluxe treatment.

Which brings me to reminding you all to check out the Sundazed website.
Sundazed is planning to do just that with the "Supersnazz" album, following
up their fairly recent "Supersneakers" CD (which combined the Groovies 1967
10" "Sneakers" with unreleased live tracks). It promises to be a highlight
in a year that also will supposedly spawn (finally) "Ignition" by the Music
Machine, an unreleased album by the Mojo Men, a compilation of CA's Butch
Engle and the Styx. Also planned is a reissue of the "Are You A Boy Or A
Girl" album by the Barbarians with bonus tracks ("Hey Little Bird" of
course) as well as a "long-overdue" compilation of the Gants ("Road
Runner," "I Wonder," etc.). Don't forget the upcoming Box Tops reissues.

Who knows when all this stuff will actually come out, though? Butch Engle,
the Mojo Men and Music Machine have all been promised for several years
now, and I have yet to hear more about the Paul Revere and the Raiders
pre-Columbia era set that was announced. However, January is apparently the
expected release time for the "Midnite Ride," "Alias Pink Puzz," "Hard and
Heavy (with marshmallow)" and "Goin' To Memphis" reissues.

So unless Y2K wipes out Sundazed's computers and sends Tim Livingston and
Jud Cost into underground shelter, and causes all the master tapes of cool
'60s bands to dissolve into unremasterable goo, 2000 sounds like a cool
year for us garage rock fans...

Prince Charles actually spent the mid-sixties here in Australia,
attending some posh boys' school in Geelong, Victoria. It's seems
unlikely that he would have spent his free time diggin' bands like the
Easybeats, Throb, or the Missing Links. He may well have gotten down to
the Seekers, however.

"Uncle Kirby" is on a comp called Texas Flashbacks
(it's a CD), and "My Way of Thinking" is on one of the
Boulders comps, but I'm not sure which one.

I don't believe the Sonic's Rendezvous Band ever
recorded an album (could be wrong), but there is an
excellent live recording of them called "Sweet
Nothing" on Mack Aborn Rhythmic Arts that captures
them in a real high energy performance. Make sure you
get that.

As for Thee Headcoats, where do you begin? Mr.
Childish and his various crews have recorded so much
stuff. My personal fave is "Thee Headcoats Condrum"
(sic) on Super Electro, which contains some of Billy's
most pissed-off songs. Also recommended are "The
Earls Of Suave" (Crypt), "Cowboys Are Square, This Is
Hip" (Hangman, I believe), "Beach Bums Must Die"
(Crypt)and "Heavens To Murgatroyd, It's Thee Headcoats
Already" (Sub Pop). Seek those out and you shouldn't
be too disappointed.
