a big hi to bompsters from swingin london: millennium city of dome and big
wheel (non-moving)

i was intrigued to read this in a recent bomp digest:

"My question is this:
> I'm guessing that Prince Charles was born in the 40's,
> so he was in his twenties in the 60's, right? So does
> anyone know if Prince Charles was into the hip scene
> that was goin' on in the UK in the mid-60's? "

tempting though it is just to say "you are joking" i am kinda amused by the
idea of a hip member of the royals (tm) but istr that prince charles did
once get reported as being a fan of vintage "rockers" status quo or was that
just publicity.... but i'm sure we ain't talkin' the "pictures of matchstick
men" era here.

anyway a few personal hi-lites:

elpee of 99 - the solar flares "psychedelic tantrum"
reissue elpee - various artists "g.s. i love you too" seeing as the
funhouse box set isn't actually here yet
45: beck "sexx laws" (possibly not much bomp content there)
gigs of 99 - ? & the mysterians at a party at bradley ghoulstein's pad; the
phrogs at the purple pussycat club; the first frat shack at the scala.

people! let's freak out!

Lose Cool Points?? I think that gains you plenty of Rock and Roll Points in
this Rock and Rollers book of plus and negative points. SRV have 2 lps and a
cd avalible, some great live stuff and various reissues of the only song they
released,City Slang, which is a Prime 70s Rock and Roll Song. I would buy
anything with there name on it! Fred Sonic Smith really cooks on this stuff
and the rest of the band is super, this is prime Detroit Rock and Roll.
Same with the Headcoats, the problem with them is they have so much stuff, it
is hard to know where to begin. Just grab a handfull and enjoy them, and
keep buying more. IF you are brave, you can dig into the Mighty Ceasers,
Milkshakes and Headcoates catalog. Happy hunting Billy Childish is the
greatest English rocker of the past 2 decades. I'm sure Evan will chime in
with more specific Headcoats picks, just open up your wallet!

"Uncle Kirby" is on Volume 1 of the Texas Flashback series. The CD reissues
are probably available through Bomp or Midnight.

Subject: Re: Goon Show (was Guess Who ?)

WOW, another Goon Show fan. They were absolute geniuses and madmen at
the same time. Their shows opened up a whole new world of madcap comedy,
paving the way for their direct decendents Monty Python.

My dad is English and so was a good friend back in the mid 70's. I was
given Goon Show records for Christmas and here in Canada, they would
occasionally be played on CBC radio.

Spike Milligan (like John Cleese) was a prime example of how close
genius is to madness. Both suffered from bouts of depression during
their lives. As did Peter Sellers, who's film "The Party" is reflection
of his Goon Show heritage. "Dr. Strangelove" while absolutely wonderful,
shows the influence of the American madmen he was working with at that
time.

Harry Secombe was a soft and warm character (compared to the others) but
just as loony and was very much beloved by the British public.

There are some good sites out there dedicated the Goons. Check out The
Goons for Beginners

Brian Phillips wrote...
Subject: Re: Prince Charles and The Guess Who

>Prince Charles was born in November, 1948. As for his being hip...?
>Doesn't seem likely.

Well, let's not write him off completely. He was and is a great fan of
the
wonderfully surrealist Goon Show, a radio program of the fifties that
featured Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe.

Who could be completely unhip with plots like these:

  - Two characters race to reach the age of 21 first.
  - A lucrative trade is set up to import British snow to the Sahara.
  - A fellow is determined to conquer Mount Snowden, by eating it.
  - A material called "Scradje" is used to decrease the instances of
shoes
and boots exploding.

He would have been just 11 by the time show was cancelled, but if you
were
Randy California, in two or three years, you'd be playing guitar with
Spirit, so feh on the age issue. Also, John Lennon was a big Goon Show
fan, too.

Prince Charles did some acting in Cambridge, as well. So while none of
this puts him foimly in the hip firmaMINT (Hi, all you "Singin' in the
Rain" fans!), it may not be likely, but possible.

this is featured (perhaps live?) on a comp called The Houston Post
presents the Now Sound Groove-In. Which was a weekend event in Houston
which had a really nice radio commercial produced for it. If anyone has
the comp, I would like to know more about it.

I finally picked up a cd copy of a cassette I got maybe 10 years ago,
"Israeli Rock Bands of the 1960s." If anyone has English liners, track
listing, info for this release that would be great. The cd spine is in
English, the remainder in Hebrew.
