I'm gonna have to take exception w/ your opinion, Ari. I'm no expert on Florida, but I did make
an excursion there last year in search of more stuff (mostly records) with which to clutter up my
house. The results were excellent.....Florida has a shitload of thrift stores and almost as many
flea markets and I was able to find something very swanky at almost every stop I made. Didn't find
any "garage" records, that's true, but there's a whole lot of great pop, rock, r&b, country, and jazz stuff
littered across the state. I guess when all those "old people waiting to die" actually do croak, their
stuff has to go somewhere, right?

Also, there are about a million great old roadside hotels & motor court type motels littered along the
old (pre-Interstate highway) roads and that makes for some great scenery, as far as I'm concerned!

Can't wait to go back.

*****FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE*****

JANUARY 21 @ THE BOTTOM LINE
                           THE BEAT GOES ON PRESENTS
                                          VOLUME 6: NUGGETS
HOSTED BY LENNY KAYE (AS LINK CROMWELL)
"IT'S A NUGGET IF YOU DUG IT"

In 1972 Sire Records released a two-record set of garage classics compiled by
Lenny Kaye. That record was the blueprint for the future and a key to the
past.
The songs were chosen by Lenny as a tribute to all the sixties garage bands
across America.

Most of the groups on the original record were lucky if they had a hit single
and/or an album released. Many of their records were promptly placed in
cut-out
bins and lost to the annals of time.

Or so we thought...

Collectors started to discover these lost gems. Rediscovering artists like The
Magicians, Chocolate Watchband, The Seeds, Shadows of Night, Electric Prunes
and
The Nazz (who launched the career of Todd Rundgren). Many of the groups were
one-hit wonders enjoying their "15 minutes of fame." Perhaps they were on Tom
Hanks' mind when he wrote and directed "That Thing You Do."

In 1998 Rhino Records released a four CD box set that included the original
album and enhanced the set with other lost gems of the era. THE BEAT GOES ON
will present many of these songs performed by current downtown musical
talents,
including EVAN DANDO, SCOTT KEMPNER, ANNIE GOLDEN, WILLIE NILE, THE PRISTEENS,
RICHARD LLOYD, CHRIS COLLINGWOOD, RICKY BYRD, MANIC PANIC DIVAS, TISH AND
SNOOKY, RICHARD X. HEYMAN, CARLTON SMITH, GREEN ROOFTOPS and many others.
LENNY KAYE will host the show and talk about the making of the album and the
scene he
helped to create.

The artists will be backed by an all star band including Andy York, Tony
Shanahan, Rich Pagano, Kris Woolsey and musical director Andy Burton.

It's the great, classic 60's album, so get out of the garage and come down to
the Bottom Line at 15 West 4th Street on January 21, 2000 for two shows at
7:30
and 10:30.

Psychedelic Light Show provided by Gary Fury & The Pop-Art Experimental Party.

I thought it was very hot last time I was down there. Maybe it was the
humidity.

Old band, but still kicking around with a new lineup. In fact
they just put out a CD, and it's pretty kicking. They had an
LP "Whole New World" on Restless back in the 80's, but it's
really disappointing - great songs played with no energy. I
went to see them live every time they played, and couldn't believe
it was the same band on the album. They had some killer singles,
though, like "Best Friends" and "Knock Me Down" (both on Modern
Method records). Both of those tunes have been re-done for the
new CD with quite good results. You can find the original version
of "Knock Me Down" on the Boston volume of Rhino's DIY series.

Danny Hatton (sp?) tells the same story in "I Just Wasn't Made For These
Times", the Brian Wilson documentary, and says he was there. Wouldn't
it be great if such a bizarre story really is true? He said Iggy declared
Brian nuts when he made them sing "Shortnin' Bread" - in rounds!

Hi Gang ,
There have been a few letters lately from Winnipeg Bompers discussing
the merits of their city's 60's and 70's musical heritage.
I thought you listees might like to see one side of that city's current
musical scene.

Here is December "chart" from CKUW, one of two local university FM radio
stations. You will note that Man or Astroman holds down the 5th spot.
They were here about a month ago and got some decent local press.

One band that might especially please readers of this list are The Fever
Breaks at number 8 on the chart. They are a very hot Psychobilly quartet
with the bass player exclusively using a washtub and broomhandle with
heavy-gauge wire for his instrument. It's no gimmick, this guy swings.

I saw them along with the Farrell Bros at the New Years Eve "Rockabilly
Blow-out" at the Royal Albert Arms. The Farrells go with two acoustic
guitars, standup bass and a standup drummer. The brothers also host one
excellent rockabilly radio show called "Rumble at the Opry" on Fridays
from 5-6 PM CST on CKUW.

Click on the URL for CKUW. I believe you can pick them up on the
Net. Enjoy.

Mike Furnish.

Happy New Year to all those that took a much deserved vacation. Due to
the
long break, it seemed more appropriate to compile a monthly chart for
December. We will resume our normal weekly charts beginning next week.
