MAX

There are five volumes: Vol 1 "Look At The Sunshine" (British Summer Tyme
Pop) <good moments: Ivy League "My World Fell Down", The Searchers "Have You
Ever Loved Somebody" and a few more -- a lot of covers. UK pop bands trying
to sound US harmony based. If psych or freakier sounds are your bag this
won't overly excite). Vol 2 "Dream Time" (British Sunshine Pop) < good
moments: The Searchers "Popcorn Double Feature", The Settlers "Major To
Minor" and more than the previous volume -- again very poppy>. Vol 3 "Autumn
Almanac" (The British Soft Rock Sound) <the best of the bunch: all pretty
listenable, with The Knack's "Man From The Marriage Guidance & Advice Bureau
being the highlight -- a bit more folk-rock / moody in general). Vol 5
"Uptown Girls And Big City Boys" (The 60s Brit Building Sound) <Not exciting
at all unless standard 60s mainstream pop ala Pet Clark and big orchestrated
ballads are your thing -- not really advised at all>.

Hope that helps all CDs are on the Sequel label and should be very easy to
find anywhere. One point to take though is that the psych styled covers
aren't representative of the music. This is basically another way for Sequel
to repackage the 60s out put of Pye.

Beware, the original version of 'Demention of Sound' now exchanges hands for
more than twice its original price and also suffers from questionable sound
quality. The tracks are compressed to hell to eliminate scratches and
surface noise. You are probably best sticking with that reissue copy of
"DOS" and then sourcing the tracks on the Decal and Castle (Pye Catalogue)
compilations available. Then, rip your faves and save 'em as MP3s on your
hard disc for that ultimate beat/r'n'b UK compilation you always wanted.
Don't you just love those old sounds and this new fangled computer
technology?

I have been a music collector since i was twelve, so i've got some miles on my brain. I won't go into too much detail but some of the bands that are regarded as classics here were on the radio as new releases when I was a kid. You are jealous, i can tell.
While it is cool to digress onto matters more cerebral than plunking down dough for obscure vinyl releases from sweat addled noise thwackers, let's keep it clean folks. One wonderful thing i have noticed while lurking about on this digest is how sweet and funky all y'all are. I know i can respect you in the morning. Leave out the political rants and slowburn jingoism. Just make sure you vote.

thanks for the tip! i've actually seen two original copies recently of *dos*
for around $25 and was thinking about gettin' 'em, but now maybe i'll pass.
thing is, the repress has so much noise on a few of the cuts it pretty much
wrecks 'em. oh well! still, it's a great comp. music-wise as those cuts just
cannot be beat!

speaking of brit r&b/freakbeat, i'm curious what are some of people's fave
comps? as far as cds go, i'd have to pick decca's scene series, the
*freakbeat and r&b* volumes; while with vinyl it would probably be *d.o.s.*,
*pebbles #6* and *purple pill eaters*. a recent killer would be *claphands
daddy come home*.

WANTS: anyone out there have a copy of the clique discography lp on dig the
fuzz they wanna sell me or burn a cd of? lemme know, as i've been looking for
this for a while (another one of those records i saw, passed on, changed my
mind, and now cannot find). i'm also looking for a copy of *echoes in the
wilderness* lp.

Sylvain,

Bomb lurker here. Hey, you and Blair both put out pretty good Best of 98
lists that influenced much of my '99 purchases. I didn't see a your best of
99 list this year. If you made one, could you email it to me or tell me the
title so I can find it in the archives.

I collate all these lists and other recommendations into one list that I
take with me when I shop. The store employees often see my list and are
eager to help, but once they begin to read the list, they get uncomfortable
and start looking for some way to give it back to me because the stuff is so
obscure. Kinda funny.

Thanks, Rob

Don't know if it's still available or not, but Hollywood Records (of Burbank,
California) put out a super fantastic 2 CD set (50 tracks!) in 1993 called The
History Of The Dave Clark Five. According to the liner notes, the remastering
process was supervised by Dave Clark himself. The liners also mention that this
package represented the first ever legitimate CD reissue of any DC5 material...hard
to believe, but apparently true. The package includes a fantastic booklet crammed
full of never before seen (by me, anyway) photos.

Another interesting DC fact: Dave Clark co-wrote and produced two songs for his friend
Freddie Mercury in 1992 (Time and In My Defence) and have achieved triple-platinum
status!

Good luck hunting* and if you can't find it, I'll be glad to tape it for you.

This was the first thing I thought of too, but it might be discontinued; CDnow, at least, only has the cassette version listed, which isn't a good
sign.

Coincidentally, Hollywood records acquired the rights to the Queen back catalog and also put out the last couple of new Queen albums before Freddie
Mercury died.

there is one great CD of the Dave Clark five a two CD set put out in the mid
nineties called the history of the Dave Clark five, I think it's still in
print has a lot of great b sides plus the obvious hits, Dave is a smart and
deliberate businessman owns his own rights to his stuff, so he put a lot of
care into what is out this is it pretty good set . anyway if you have a
litle trouble try to specal order it cd now should have it or some place
anyway a great set

Hey Evan...

Thanks for that one about Hellacopters latest record. Tobba at Zorch in
Sweden here.

Seems like not many people knows the tons of bands that are way much better
than the overrated Hellacopters.

Turpentines, Texas Motherfuckers, 69-Hard among others...

Pussy Galore is who the Oblivians aspired to be, but never were...um, how
'bout they sound like a cranky Shaggs playing R&B? One of the very best
garge bands of the '80s, embarassing all those Paisley pop bands...oh and
you should be able to easily score the Matador reissues of the LPs Sugar
Shit Sharp EP, Dial M, and Right Now.

PS does anyone want to get rid of the 2LP version of Pussy Galore's Exile

We (the Innuendos) are breaking in a new drummer, and I'm giving him a crash
course in Garage 101. Tape #1 had all my faves from the last decade: Lyres,
Woggles, Conquerors (MN), Swingin' Neckbreakers, Hate Bombs, Detroit Cobras,
Insomniacs, and Trick Babys.

I want to make two more tapes to give him a really comprehensive overview -
kind of a "beginners guide."

Any suggestions?

Yeah, I have that too. Not bad, but with so many songs, it tends to drag.
They should've taken all the rockin' songs and put them on a single disc.

just to add my 2 cents to the gun debate,i can think of one recent example
of american citizens defending themselves thanks to the second amendment;
during the civil-rights movement of the 50's/60's,many southern blacks
defended themselves against klan terrorism with privately-owned guns,as the
police often sided with the klan, and refused to protect them.i sugest
picking up the Dec.'99 issue of Liberty Magazine for an article,"When the
NAACP Went Armed", as it details this moment in history that gun-control
advocates would rather ignore;by the way,i'm not a gun-owner,and i've never
fired anything other then a bb gun as a kid,so please dont waste your
"gun-nut" jabs on me.

Wondering if the Sylvain, or any of the Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish &/or
Danish bompers could
shed any light on any of these bands, as I'm already makin' up my
SXSW(South By Southwest) "to-see" schedule. I'd like to branch out from

different this year........Anyway, I don't need a blow by blow, but any
elucidation on these bands would be appreciated. Are any worth seeing
in your estimation? (Reply on or offline)

(Also, for more info & registration, http://www.SXSW.com, I recommend
going Platinum, that is,
going to all 3 conferences, we always do, and it's a blast.)
