Thanks,

Well Evan get ready to rock. This band was the forerunner of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and are tres noisy and wild for the most part, with Spencers' ball and chain screeching haughtily over top the mad mosh while the band churns. They may have all the superficial angst of garage/ers but belong more in the noise camp (like Sonic Youth and the ilk). Not that everything needs to be 4/4 time and easy to unnerstan' but for my dough they stretch the patience limit with their skronk. Perfect for New Yorkers! Great in small doses.

There is also the Tell Tale Hearts to consider, also The Flamin' Groovies
"Shake Some Action", The Last's - "She Don't Know Why I'm Here" as well.

I would also put on "Harden My Heart" by Quarterflash at the beginning,
with the note "This is WHY garage bands exist, to sound nothing like these
jokers."

While I never thought The Oblivians made great records, I thought they
were an amazing live band. Pussy Galore, on the other hand, I never liked
in either setting. To my ears, it was just noisy crap, in the same way that
Sonic Youth was. (Before anyone gets all nuts, remember, I'm just stating
my opinion, just as Nipper did.) Of course, this is coming from a guy who's
not into JSBX, either. (I remember seeing a show at the Knitting Factory
9-10 years ago, with the Original Sins opening, followed by JSBX, then The
Lyres. I was glad it was a summer evening, 'cuz I'd've hated to have been
forced to stay indoors and endure the entire JSBX set.)

 One of the very best
>garge bands of the '80s, embarassing all those Paisley pop bands
Again, we'll have to disagree. The difference, tho', may be that I *like*
(what I consider to be) good pop music (Paisley or otherwise); perhaps
Nipper goes more for the noisy stuff. Personally, I'd much rather have been
at an Original Sins, Headless Horsemen, Chesterfield Kings, etc. show than
one by Pussy Galore. In fact, I think I'd've rather been home watching TV
than seeing PG.

This is a phenomenon I don't understand. An original
copy of a vinyl BOOTLEG that reissued rare tunes in
horrible quality is now a collectable?!. Back when all
these great songs were unavailable anywhere else, it
was exciting just to have them in any condition (I
taped those "Chocolate Soup for Diabetics" vinyl comps
and played them until the tape tore!), but with so
much of these tunes being released in great sound
quality, who would want an "old-style" bootleg
(horribly pressed from horribly dirty 45s)? The CD
version of Chocolate Soup, which is a bootleg, sounds
a 1000 time better than those vinyl versions of the
series! Alot of these songs are even coming out on
legitimate releases (for example, the Decca "scene"
comps).

I really dug and appreciated those old vinyl bootlegs
like "Chocolate Soup," "Demention of Sound" and
"Electric Sugar Cube Flashbacks" at the time when they
came out, but now I just look at the covers every once
in a while.

Okay I can't resist the gun debate any longer. I find it surprising that more
people hold driver's licenses and own motor vehilces than guns and yet the
Gun lobby has all the clout. Think of all the laws, regulations, fees, fines
and paperwork involved in getting a license, maintaining a license, operating
and owning a car. Now ponder that most of the regulations come from
government and folks, there are more coming every day. Just log on to your
state's (or province's) website and look under "legislature" and bills. What
amazes me is that the motorists say nothing in protest.
We are the most overtaxed and regulated constituancy in the land, subject to
some of the most onorous laws, fines and regulations. And I'm not talking
about the basic rules of the road here.
In my state you can lose your license for not paying a parking ticket (which
most towns hand out like toilet paper). When the gun debate is viewed in that
light, I've got one thing to say to the NRA. 'Quit yer Bellyachin, and thank
God your guns aren't as regulated as the average car!'

Hello there,

"Hurt Me" dates back to the early Heartbreakers, when Hell was still in
the band (hear it on his ROIR studio tape). Johnny dug it up years later
for his acoustic sessions, great song, lyrics and all.

I'm all for a Gun Club thread (or was that a joke?), or how about this
one : Childish eats Bukowski's crud and stuffs Knut Hamsen's pet canary
and the Headcoats slurp the ass of the Queen Mother with scones all of

Other than 90's is ok, too. I have *some* ideas as to what I want to tape
for him, but I'm having a hard time editing out of all the great garage of
all time what songs by what bands could define the whole sound on only two
tapes. So - if you had to only use - say - 5 songs to define garage to a
neophyte, what would they be?

I saw the Blues Explosion when RL Burnside was opening up for them and
their show reminded me of a noisier-but-no-less-controlled, more
rock-oriented, whiter (obviously), James Brown show.

Living in NYC, every apartment I've ever had has had an obnoxious neighbor
who would blare spanish music (mostly salsa and crooning love songs with
horrible tinny electric piano, thumping bass, and synthetic drums to make
you cringe)day and night so I could never get sleep without cursing...

...so imagine my surprise when I discovered I really *love* old-time Cuban
swing/salsa (I dunno what to call it but it is great!)music by Ibrabim
Ferrer. The disc I heard (at work - I give brownie points to employees who
bring in good stuff to listen to) was produced by Buena Vista Social Club.

Does anyone know of any other related discs? Other similar artists?

My favorite collection of this ilk is a hard to find one called "Bravos Del
Ritmo", however http://www.gemm.com lists a vendor that has it. It
features one of the giants of music, Machito, Richie Reyes' "Feria En
Manizales", Ray Barretto ("El Watusi" was his big crossover hit in the
fifties, but he has had a great career after that as well.

If you want another great compilation that is much easier to find, try
"Dancing with the Enemy: Cuba Classics 2" on David Byrne's Luaka Bop label.
In both cases, the liner notes are in English; Byrne's label's comp
actually has the lyrics in English (but not in Spanish!?). This features
Maria Theresa Vana, who recorded until she was in her eighties, Los Zafiros
and the wild Los Van Van. This is the best volume for the old time stuff.
Skip volume 3, if that is too modern for you (it was for me).

As far as artists are concerned, you cannot go far wrong with Celia Cruz y
Sonora Matancera. Ms. Cruz has been performing for four or five decades
and she said in an article, "I plan to die onstage". She is STILL
recording and touring, but I like her work with Sonora Matancera (she must
have too; she married a trumpet player in the band!) Palladium has issued
"Celia Cruz, Cuba's Queen of Rhythm" which has her "Pa'la Paloma", a
favorite of mine.

She's the queen of 'em all, y'all,
She's the queen of 'em all, y'all.

There is also the still recording and still touring Tito Puente. I saw him
in concert and he was one lively 70 year-old! I recommend "Dance Mania"
(vols. 1 and 2), which are both wonderful, but see if you can find the CD
that has both albums on it (or did I dream that one?). There is also "El
Rey Del Timbal", another outstanding collection. Since he has recorded
over 100 albums, I don't know which has the original version of "Oye Como
Va", which was later made more famous by Santana.

Another couple of fellows worth seeking out are Johnny Pacheco (I have his
first album and it's an absolute killer!) and although, there are folks on
the list that would turn up their noses, Gitano by Carlos Santana is a
great song (it's on Amigos, which is not the greatest of albums).

There is also Tito Rodriguez. I would recommend "Live at the Palladium"
(he also has two cuts on "Bravos del Ritmo").

I hope this is of value to you. I am partially Cuban (don't speak Spanish,
but I can pronounce it well, so I am told), so I may be culturally

You may want to check out a group called Estrellas De
Areito. They used to have 3 CD's out, but they are
out of print, and their stuff has now been put onto a
2CD set, this group is also connected to the Buena
Vista Social Club, but I don't know how...Another old
time Cuban guy is named Arsenio Rodriguez. He plays
with an orquestra (orchestra) and there are a couple-a
CD's out with his stuff. This stuff is really old, it
kinda sounds like the music that Ricky Ricardo's group
would play on "I Love Lucy". How 'bout the Joe Cuba
Sextet? Maybe you've heard their song "El Pito (I'll
Never Go Back to Georgia)" It's on the soundtrack to
the movie Crooklyn.
Some other groups that I've heard and enjoy, but they
aren't necessarily from Cuba:
Willie Colon and Ruben Blades. They started off
playing together and then they both went solo. Either
way (together or solo) they both put out some really
good stuff. Maybe listen to their "Best of" CD.
Celia Cruz is also very popular, she is on the spanish
channel quite regularly playing with her group. Do you
get the TV show called Sabado Gigante in NY? It's an
all day TV show that is kinda like a mix between The
Price Is Right and Star Search because they have games
and performers. Anyways, it is on on Saturday and some
of the musical guests are pretty popular people like
Celia Cruz and Tito Puente...Lemme know off list if
you are interested maybe I can get you some copies of
this stuff from my dad, cause I might be going home
this weekend.

He is ALSO on "Bravos Del Ritmo"! Rodriguez, the "fabulous blind man" was
the inventor of the genre called "Son".

Before anyone (and I am NOT accusing the poster!) rolls their eyes, Arnaz
was quite the bandleader. His band really cooked!

OK, so I goofed.

Me Fallaste!

According to All Music, "...he would later become known as "El Ciego
Maravilloso" ("The Marvelous Blind One")."

And foithermore..."During this period, the standard format for playing son
was the Septeto, consisting of trumpet, guitar, tres, bongos, bass, maracas
and claves, with two or more band members singing. The general trend in the
1930s had been for the son to stray somewhat from its African roots,
adopting a more subdued sound. This would all change around 1940 when
Rodriguez added conga drum, piano, and a second (and later third) trumpet
to the typical son ensemble, giving birth to the conjunto."

It's incredible!

The CD came out three years ago, but it may sill be available in the U.S.
from Bomp or Vinyl Injections (look for 'em on the Net). Others may have
it too, but those are the people who deserve your business the most.
'Pretty Ugly' was the follow-up CD, and there are plans afoot for a
couple of new volumes this year - there's still heaps of great Aussie
'60s garage to be heard. Rocky, I thought the sound quality on these was
really good!

Top Shelf is the Sydney record corpaoration who released the Creatures
EP. The CEO receives the Bomplist, so maybe he'll be able to tell you how
to get the EP in the U.S.

well, yeah. I mean Dave Clark has total financial and artistic control
of everything he put his fingers into, shrewd, if not jerky,
businessman. he bought the rights to tons of stuff from the 1960s.
When other rockers bought houses and drugs, he bought publishing & video
rights.

I might be wrong, but that is I believe the only legit cd in print in
the US at all, then or since.

> Pussy Galore?
>Another "essential?" band I have never heard. What and who do these
guys sound like exactly?

Pussy Galore are one of my all time favorite bands and I missed them
every time they played in DC, I missed them when they played on my damn
college campus (note- this was 86 and they were just getting started and
I was 18). At the time people told me they were an art/noise/goth band
influenced by the Swans. But in reality they "sound exactly" like a
bluesy punk/garage band that threw up on tape. Horrible quality,
extremely questionable lyrics, most humorously poking fun at the DC punk
scene, dirty, grungy, noisy garage with screaming drugged out vocals.
At one point they released a cassette of them recording the Rolling
Stones Exile on Mainstreet album in it's entirety. Perhaps ballsy?
Perhaps a bloated concept?

Jon Spencer cleaned up his sound considerably before starting the Blues
Explosion.

Check out the compilation of their early material, the name of which
escapes me, I would lean toward their earlier stuff because that is more
rock and less conceptual.

"99th Floor" - Chesterfield Kings
"Help You Anne" - Lyres
"Stop Foolin' Around" - Fleshtones
"Nothin'" Cynics
"At the Nightclub" - Creeps

Too many more to start listing (like perhaps early Miracle Workers).

I shut up now.

Another band that people sometimes mention is the Electric Eels, mid/late
70's (I think Ohio?). I have only heard one song by them, and its a sorta
accurate description, except pussy galore was noisier.

"Corpse Love" was on Caroline. I also like the early ep's (which this
collects) better than the later stuff. It also has part of their "Exile"
cover.
