Always there when you need support! Yeah, I totally agree with you... After
seeing JSBX live (1994, Tramps, New York) right after "Orange" came out I've
been ready to testify that. That was the gig of the nineties for me:
intensive, aggressive, full of soul, full of energy... something you just
don't see too often anymore. For once in my life I was able to think that I
was in the right place at the right time.
Other highlights of the nineties (not in any particular order): The
Hellacopters in Stockholm 1995, The Fleshtones in Brooklyn 1995, ? & The
Mysterians at Coney High 1998, 5678's at Coney High 1997, Dead Moon in
Helsinki 1996, The Renegades in Helsinki 1998, The Lyres at Brownies 1995,
Tribute to Doo-wop and Rhythm and Blues in Harlem 1999 (with The Dells
etc.), Iggy Pop in Helsinki 1993, Thee Ultra Bimboos in Berlin 1996,
Soundtrack Of Our Lives in Stockholm 1998, Nirvana at Ruisrock, Finland
1992, Los Banditos in Flensburg, Germany 1998, The Strollers in Stockholm
1998, Bambi Molesters in Zagreb 1999, Wayne Kramer in New York 1995, Little
Richard in Helsinki 1997, Mudhoney in Helsinki 1992, The Hellacopters at
Garageshock, Bellingham 1999, The 5678's at Wild Weekend, London 1998... and
The Hypnomen in Stockholm 1999. That's what came in to my mind in five
minutes... must've missed something.

He (jello) was at a New Year's eve show at the Continental a few years back
- - I remember the Trick Babys played - I forget who else...

He and Lynn Von had a massive mutual love fest for the cameras in the
bsaement dressing room... Then - two extremely stoned out of their mind,
leather clad, bleach blond strippers realized who he was and draped
themselves on him for the cameras. One took her shirt off for the photo. It
was very amusing.

I was introduced to him, but I (New Year's Eve - OK - I was definately in a
happy place) don't remember by whom. (part of the giant entourage in the
dressing room - I forget why I was down there)
Anyway, I agree - he was very nice - quiet - soft spoken.

I think the "cause of the month" types have some mistaken notion that they

I too think Jello is quite a cool cat.

When I was in SF a couple of years ago, I went over his
pad to trade some punk records (man does he know his shit),
he answered the door in his underwear.

Thinking it was kinda weird, he led me into his record room.
I then heard another voice coming from the bathroom,
and it turned out to be some broad that he just got through
boffing. I kinda laughed to myself, cause I didn't know
what was up.

I did score some excellent punk rock though.

Not my point. I personally do not think a cop's life
is worth more than a civilan. I think I person should
be punished more severely for killing an unarmed
civilan than an armed cop. My point is that there a
lots of idiots who will be quick to jump in support
of someone "controversial" because maybe their career
is lagging and they want their name in the papers

yes I agree, despite the dodgy sound quality and poor mastering (seems to be
a common problem with those vinyl Pebbles volumes - I wonder, are the CDs
the same?)

Steve C then mentioned the Decca "Scene" comps - the "freakbeat", "Mod" and
"R&B" volumes are great IMO. Snapemup whilst they're still on catalog.

Then Jason Mata mentioned "Come on Back" by Paul Ritchie & The Cryin
Shames - yeah!!! this is one of my faves too and is featured on one of the
Scene comps, as it goes. It's a total genius late-period (Aug 66) Joe Meek
production, pop fans, and was one of the last half-dozen RGM/Meeksville 45s
released during the great man's lifetime. I'm pretty sure it was originally
the B-side (!!) of its' original release.

I've seen that Max Freakbeat cd in stores and it does look cool though with
lots of overlap from other comps. and I think that it had slightly different
tracks then was posted here. Now regarding the English Freakbeat series from
Bomp, which volumes are the strongest?

What's the opinion on Howard Tate, this mysterious soul singer, whereabouts
unknown but apparently so amazing that some major released a cd
retrospective of his recordings. It's praises were sang in Ugly Things a
coupkle years ago. Can someone give a description and opinon please?

A few years back I saw a new vinyl comp of Joe Tex's early stuff (e.g. "Davy
You Upset My Home", "Cut It Out") on King Records (for $8). Does anyone know
if it's still available? Thanks. Of course theres a cd for about $13 that
has more tracks but that vinyl version did look cool.

Hey, Tav Falco was doing better Burnside covers like ten years before
safe rocker Spencer. Plus, for a guy who's supposed to dig BFTG and all,
Spencer didn't have a clue about We The People in a recent Euro

figures). Finally, how unfair is it that Country Jeff Evans has to work

Howard Tate is great! I have his Verve lp and non-lp Verve 45s (these are
what are contained on that cd retrospective). He has a very gospel-y,
soulful voice, and the songs and arrangements (many by Jerry Ragovoy) suit
him well. A bit more uptown than what Stax was doing, but still very
soulful. Fave titles include "Ain't Nobody Home" (recently covered by some
newer artist, whose name escapes me), "Get It While You Can," and "Shoot
'Em All Down," among others. The cd, also called "Get It While You Can"
(good advice!), is listed on CD now, so it is still available.

I pulled down an MP3 of "I Can Only Give you Everything" by the Roman Bornski Quartet off of MP3.COM. Very crude.

Dear Friends, I let a friend use this account to post to your list concerning
a show he was producing New Years Eve. The show is over and so is my friends
involvement with the Bomp List. Can anyone be so kind to inform me how I can
unsubscribe from this Bomp list? It is not listed with my OneList
subscriptions.

Thank you so much

Subject: Muscle Shoals Bands of the 60's Reunion - comments?

Old time subscriber, 1st post in, oh 3 years... My normal
stomping ground is the Audities-List, but this is much more
a Bomp subject.

I was searching for information about band called Beckett who
supposedly released a killer single in 74 ("Little Girl" b/w
"My Lady") --- but that's not my point --- when I ran across
a reunion record consisting of Muscle Shoals bands from the
1960's - a before they were session allstars thing.

Here's the URL: http://alamhof.org/music.htm
(Alabama Music Hall of Fame web site)

Some of the musicians envolved include Dan Penn, Spooner Oldhan,
Norbert Putnam, Dave Hood, Roger Hawkins, Donnie Fritts, Billy
Scott, Terry Woodford and a bunch more.

The original 60's bands/artists were: The Mark V, The Del-Rays,
Hollis Dixon, The Keynotes, The Mystics, The New Breed, The
Weejuns (heard these guys years ago!), Bobby Denton, Travis
Wammack and Terry Woodford.

2 questions:

 Anyone heard this record? Comments?

Are originals from these bands on comps like Pebbles, or
possibly some southern soul/beach music label like Ripete?

Back to the shadows again,

Jello would have to have more advisors than Reagan first of all.

Second of all, he would be forcing all of these stupid, militant issues upon
people. He may be smart and have something to say , but it would never work.
He would probably get impeached.

But then again, he would never even be voted into office in the first place.

I dig Mr. Tate quite a bit. I have a couple of his singles and like all
four sides. Ry Cooder liked him, too, he covered, "Look at Granny Run
Run". He had a fine voice and great backing.

Choose his CD NOW! Choose it, before it chooses YOU!

i dig #1 the most, and then #4, though #3 has some real killers on it...

Stupid, maybe, but... It was *kinda* humorous, at least. Obviously not meant
to be taken seriously (I hope.) I think I have a record (or two) at home by
the article's author, Serene Dominic. (And could the "Power Pop" Pat he
refers to be the guy who does Yeah, Yeah, Yeah fanzine?)

Hmmm,
There's a great bar in Williamsburg/Brooklyn on Bedford of which I dont know
the name. We usually just call it the Container Bar because you can get a
sweet 32 oz Bud in a styrofoam cup for 3 bucks. Anyway, on the jukebox there
is a couple mod collections that look pretty good but I cant seem to find
them anywhere. So my question is "If you know what I'm talking about where
can I find them?" The end. Thanks.

Yeah, I got the attempts at humor, but the article:

 - misses a big controversy about "Windy" (it was based on a hippie in San
Francisco who was always stoned, therefore he was known for "tripping" down
the streets of the city)

 - neglected to mention that one of the members died from an overdose

  - drops almost entirely the very premise of the article (is this the same
Gary from the Association?)

I am no big fan of the Association, but if I was, this article would not
have taught me much.

Boooo.

Quite true... I just figured the guy wasn't attempting to teach anything
to anyone (let alone a fan.) Really, I'm guessing this guy probably needed
to turn in an article and this is what came to mind.

you're not talking about the sweetwater.......? Our pal lives on S 1st/Bedford
Ave, and last visit (during Cavestomp)we played some pool there, listened to
some good tunes, juke was in the back. Many garage tunes.....(didn't take a
gander @ the juke, hence didn't notice any mod collections, pretty satisfied
w/what was playing @ the time.......) I dug that area, even though it was
seemingly a little "newly-gentrified-pseudo-hip". Still........had fun. Good
polish place for breakfast.

good luck, as I'm no help....

If Bomp's all out, Bill Finneran may well still have CD copies in stock
of DEVIL'S CHILDREN and perhaps even DESTINATION FRANTIC (U.S. '60s
garage). Bill is highly recommended for his fast service + fair prices,
and he often has stuff you can't find elsewhere.

Good point. Get the legit Missing Links CD for more of the same
(shameless plug). The Elois (who also appear on Maximium Freakbeat) are
an Australian band too, and there's a fair bit of Euro stuff on it as
well. I agree that Wimple Winch's 'Save My Soul' is one of the all-time
greatest; the Aussie Lime Spiders did a wild version around '86 on
Citadel records.

Subject: more pussy galore

I sat on this email for a day and edited the political commentary out,
you all should be at least a little happy.

In one sentence? Neither Jello nor Donald Trump are serious candidates
nor could either win because both are using the concept of presidential
candidacy as a way of playing with media exposure, one for fun/political
ideas the other for commerce branding which made Martha Stewart a
billionaire. Also I first heard about Mumia in the late 80s, so you
know, the publicity has picked up speed, but this all happened like 18
years ago.

ok, someone mentioned that in the early 80s in Providence some band that
played in the apt. next to them was pussy galore. Most likely that was
Jon's first band Shithaus which he was in with, I believe, one of the
principles in the noise rock band Cop Shoot Cop. I have the Shithaus
cassette which was the soundtrack to a student film or something circa
84-85. I am not positive but I thought Pussy Galore was an idea in
Providence but became a band when Julie and Jon moved to DC in like
summer 1985. Where Neil lived I don't remember. Christina, Jon's wife,
from Boss Hog lived in DC then and worked at Hagen Dasz 83/84-ish with
Ian Mackaye and Henry Rollins, but I was too young to know all this at
the time. They were resoundingly hated here because their lyrics were so
harsh and their attitude so unlike DC. for me the thing is that people
thought they were arty because they had no other frame of reference. If
you were a critic who never heard the Keggs or the Green Fuzz, but you
liked no wave bands, ehh... It's like the people who talk about VU as
new wave but never seem to notice the rock roots which form a lot of
their songs. I don't hear the sun ra references in people's stuff
because I don't have that in my repetoire.
