Subject: Sir Douglas on Fridays

Somebody made me a copy of the two episodes of Fridays that Andy Kaufman
hosted. The musical guest on episode one was the Sir Douglas Quintet and
the first song was "You're Gonna Miss Me". They also did Mendocino and
another tune. The Pretenders (with Honeyman-Scott on guitar) was the
guest on the other show.

I like them all though each Vol. has a few duffers for sure... I personally
find the Ravens cuts not much cop and things like Chris Sandford or Svensk
are weak filler at best IMHO. "Rise of The brighton Surf" too (Vol 6) is
about as exciting as "Da Doo Ron Ron" by the Loog Oldham Orch. on Decca's
Beat Scene that gets mentioned in the liners in relation to it... Ugh..
Skip...

My fave Freakbeat comps remain the "unofficial" Purple Pill Eaters and
Echoes In The Wilderness...

<<The original 60's bands/artists were: The Mark V, The Del-Rays,
Hollis Dixon, The Keynotes, The Mystics, The New Breed, The
Weejuns (heard these guys years ago!), Bobby Denton, Travis
Wammack and Terry Woodford.>>

The Del-Rays recorded for labels including R and H and Atco... both soul and
garage. Their cover of "Fortune Teller" might be of most interest to people
on this list. The Mystics featured David Hood and backed Terry Woodford on
some of his singles (on labels such as Fame). Terry and gang later recorded
as Terry & The Chain Reaction on United Artists (including "Keep Your Cool",
covered in the '80s by Plan 9).
Travis Wammack is best known for his great guitar instrumental "Scratchy"
which has turned up on at least one soul compilation, and was covered by the
Luv'd Ones from Michigan... you can hear their version on the "Truth Gotta
Stand" CD on Sundazed.
I have a couple of singles by the Weejuns, nothing spectacular, and not on
comps as far as I know.

Let me echo the sentiments of those that have recommended the Howard Tate
reissue. The guy sang his heart out! "Ain't Nobody Home" is a true classic
that was covered by B.B. King. Miami's great Montells used to cover "Look
At Granny Run Run" at some of the dances they played. That song could be
used on a Viagra ad today!

again i agree with the other frank---howard is a great one---someplace i
have another album by him (other than the verve one)---i would describe him
as "pleading soul"---and of course joplin had a radio hit with a copy of his
song and his arrangement---perhaps one of the northern soul afficionados
(katrina?)knows something of his current state

Patrick Robinson <patrickrobinson@yahoo.com>

<<and from our side cynical side it is easier to bombast
the celebrities than to maybe take the informed stand
on the issues ourselves. we all may want to "eat the
rich", but at least know what you are putting your
mouth. as to exact specifics of the mumia case, how
am i to know. we supposedly follow the ideal of
innoscent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable
doubt. (yeah right!) well, there is reasonable doubt
and sufficent cause for a re-trial. that is all i
would like to see happen. a "fair" trial.>>

With apologies to Jen Rassler and some of the others who are burnt out on
the politically-oriented posts of the past week, I have to say I was pleased
to read Patrick's post. Many of you are, I believe, letting your cynacism
run away with you on the issue of famous rockers (and movie stars, etc.
etc.) taking public stands on current events. It is cynical in the extreme
to deny them the benefit of the doubt that they are expressing beliefs they
care about, instead of trying to jumpstart flagging careers. Not only that,
but a great many of the celebrities who have spoken up about Mumia Abu
Jamal's case and other high profile issues have no NEED to jumpstart their
careers. They are as entitled as anyone else to voice their opinions, and
moreover, are in a unique position to garner more than a little publicity
for the causes they espouse. Fine.

There are a variety of reasons people are speaking out about the Mumia Abu
Jamal case--opposition to the death penalty, or belief in his innocence, for
example, but Patrick brings up what is probably the most solid of all, which
is simply that, regardless of whether Mumia is innocent or guilty, the
conduct of the judge in his case was so deplorable that he should have been
granted a retrial ages ago. Regardless of what the outcome might be were it
to happen, the case is a well-publicized example of abuse of power in the
criminal justice system, and the dogged insistence on hanging someone,
ANYONE, simply because it was a COP who was shot, and they were lucky enough
to get a conviction--largely through extraordinarily outrageous behaviour by
a judge whose conduct, many think, should have led to his being disbarred.
I don't recall too many of the specifics, but I remember that he interrupted
testimony with caustic, irrelevant comments, made a very public show of
disinterest in other testimony, and was extraordinarily capricious and
arbitrary in refusing to admit evidence that would have helped Mumia's case.
Personally, I'm impressed when someone successful bothers to make an effort
outside of the routine of their ordinary revenue-generating activities.

Relinquishing the soap box,

Lenny
