Subject: Pussy Galore Goes Back To The Grave: Shapes of Things To Come...

Many many moons ago, I was one in a long line of many who would run the JD
Martingnon gauntlet by working at Midnite Records Intl. in the "shipping
dept." One afternoon a young and up until then unknown Jon Spencer saunters
in carrying an arm load of the debut album by his new band Pussy Galore.
Handing one to JD, who holds it up limply between two fingers by one of it's
corners like a day old tuna sandwich, offers it to him to sell simply on
consignment. And JD responds by saying as only the French can say, "zees ees
of no intrest to mee!", and passes it back. Completely unphased, Spencer
walks over to my "station", hands me a copy and says, "keep it", and walks
out. I look it's black and white cover over, let the name of the band
register, and decide it's a keeper. JD then sashays over and says, "thees
weel nevr do enytheeng!", does an abrupt about face, and returns to his
duties behind the not-so-secret-secret "Get Smart" two way glass mirror,
leaving me to stuff mailers with garage goodies for expectant fuzz fans
worldwide. Very soon after that (or perhaps before) a young and already
infamous Tim Warren enters the shop, offers JD a truck load of "Back From The
Grave Vol.1" (on vinyl thank you ) and definitely not on consignment. JD,
eyes lighting up as he greedily fingers the jacket agrees, and even inquires
about the release date for Vol.2! Tim walks over to my "station", hands me a
copy and confidently requests eight bucks. I look Mort Todd's red and white
rendering on the cover over, let the title sink in...and I reach for my
wallet.

(Laurent and anyone else, please don't be offended by any of my French
stereotyping. I'm just having some fun.)

No problem Jon. Though I would rather have to pay $20 for the 1st back
from the grave than get every Pussy Galore record for free.

I met Jello once. He struck me as rather arrogant and full of himself. His

Agreed, she is very cute indeed, but after hearing several of her vocals,
which consist of rather high-pitched unintelligible screeches, I believe
that this post should not go to Bomp, but rather to lists concerning Yoko
Ono or Rush.

There is always hope, should there be a Jujus reunion, though.

My first encounter with that record was very similar, although I was a
customer's side of the counter at the record shop I was at. I'd read
positive reviews of their "Feel Good About Your Body" EP (of which I have
not seen a copy to this day), so I looked at the song titles --"Asshole";
"Die Bitch"; "Teen Pussy Power"; "Kill Yourself"; "You Look Like A Jew";
"Cunt Tease"-- and just knew I had to buy it. "Groovy Hate Fuck" indeed!

That's probably OK, since The Onion already went over the top with that in
the WWII headlines from "Our Dumb Century", esp. the bit about the opening
of the "Arc de Capitulation."

Work for him?! I can't even bring myself to shop there! My last memory of
Bob is, after not seeing him for about10 years, the very first words out of
his mouth were a very loud, "Look at you, you fuckin' idiot, you lost all

Hmmmm,
Whom do I hate more...Now this is a complete toss-up.

I've been banned from both of their shops for totally going
off on both assholes (NYC folk back me up on this one).

It is quite funny to see how many folk have worked for the two.

Bleekers actually sucks quite a bit now, but at least JD
does get the occasional cool Euro version of some comps.

I can say that both have ripped off local bands quite a bit for
not paying money (records left on consignment). Lots of bands
just kinda phased out.

Hey, I found an old Joe Tex 45 at a used record store, and I bought it on
the sole basis of the song title, "Ain't Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat
Woman)" Fucking HILARIOUS! Some kinda disco shit, I guess. the flip, "Rub
Down", is pretty funny too. Super cheezy. Anybody else heard this disc?

Yeah, that was from 1977, the height of disco...The Bump was one of the
dances. The record was one of his biggest hits actually, it hit #12 on the
pop chart and #7 on the soul chart.

I'm getting married on the 22nd, and I'm making music tapes for the party
afterward (we're not using the word "reception," this is all very informal).
I'm looking for suggestions for songs to use. They don't have to be at all
Bomp-related; I'm going for a wide variety.

Thanks,
Joey

Sorry, Nathan, but as far as I know Coney Island has been closed down for about a year now. It had been the site for Cavestomp '98 - a really great garage band fest. If you in the NYC area, or can get there, and like 60's psych/garage band music it's the place to go. They will have another one this spring in NYC.

Many, many congrats to you Joe! There are lotsa songs that'd be great
fer the after wedding party. The one that immediately springs to my mind is
"Love Me Tonight" (many versions, but use the Annette Hanshaw one). Again,
many happy years to come for you and yer bride.

"Little Steven" Van Zandt is indeed the one on the Sopranos. Would be cool
if one of the Swinging
Neckbreakers were in a tv series, but alas, it 'taint true.
