I know a guy who has all these old reel to reels of australian bands
concerts from the late 60s, many garage bands etc. He has put them onto 6
CDs but is planing to cut it down to three and releasing them. Wont that be
cool?
Also does anyone know about a group from england i think called East Wood?
They are either late 60s or early 70s. i cant find out any info on them any
where.
Also is "moving in a circle" by the executives on any compilation CDs?
And speaking lately about australian hey joe covers, there was one done
later but it was based on the hendrix version, and i dont remember who it
was by. Also an adelaide band did "stone free" but i dont know if they ever
recorded it.

I will say that Nirvana loved the Sonics & NW catalog, Billy Childish,
and other garage types (also, obviously, Dinosaur Jr) which directly
influenced their sound and were the real forerunners of that crap. The
big N toured out to DC in 90 when I was friends with a lot of Olympia,
WA types and chatted with us while we waited at great length to
interview like Loop or whatever band they were touring with. I mean,
look at the records that Steve from Mudhoney released
(http://www.superelectro.com/) and that basically sums up that crowd. I
seriously have to wonder if another band so influenced by garage rawk
had a number 1 hit in the US in the 1990s. Of course Nirvana saved rock
and roll radio, but I won't go into that now. (think Ratt, Cinderella,
and pre-Nirvana radio).

I think Billy once said something along the lines of, "can you imagine

Also, I know there was a book where someone manages to either go back in
time or is there to make sure certain "lost" albums are finished.
(_Smile_
was one of them, as I remember.) I just can't remember the title or the
author. I think it was mentioned on here a couple years ago. Can someone
(a) refresh my memory and (b) recommend a place to pick it up? (As I
recall, I had amazon.com or bn.com keeping their eyes open, but there
are
better places for such things.)

The book you are referring to is "Glimpses" by Lewis Shiner. I have not
read it, but I remember reading reviews of it back in the mid-90's and
also in this recent article on Brian Wilson and Smile from the Phoenix
New Times.

http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/issues/1999-12-23/music3.html

While recently purchasing "Hamburger" by the Muffs at Stinkweeds Records
in Tempe, I came across Vendetta #13 on the 'zine rack. What caught my
eye was Paul Revere & the Raiders on the cover. The issue is especially
bomp-ish with interviews with Greg Shaw, The Loons, Mark Lindsay,
Outrageous Cherry and a update on the Beachwood Sparks. Here's the web
link to this publication.

http://www.angelfire.com/ma2/vendetta/

Writing of books and the Velvet Underground, I just finished "The Velvet
Years 65-67: Warhol's Factory." This is a excellent black and white
photography-coffee table book on that whole scene. According to drummer
Moe Tucker, Andy Warhol volunteered at soup kitchens! The photographs
are by Stephen Shore and text by Lynne Tillman. I picked up a copy for
$6.00 from one of Barnes & Nobles' bargain tables.

In all truth, I wouldn't mind if I never heard the VU again. I liked
'em when I was a teenager, but the music is just too cool, too aloof, to
keep my interest past the hundredth playing. I think John Cale's "Paris

Lou Reed ever recorded. You want sheer brutal punk intensity, listen to

wow--maybe it's a sign of my advanced age, but I'm always surprised when
someone asks... <g>. Lee, if you really haven't looked into 'em--RUN, do
not walk to your local purveyor. They are probably the single most
influential band that never had a hit, and with REALLY good reason.
Seriously, they are the ONLY band that is as important to me as The Stooges.
And they were SOOOOOOOOOOOO damn punk when the concept didn't even exist.
Yeah, they do hold some appeal to an artsy crowd, which CAN be a bad sign,
but it's only 'cause Lou is so literate (GREAT songwriter) and Cale played a
classical instrument and acts artsy, and of course 'cause of the Warhol
connection. But they made the most AWESOME primitive R&R ya ever heard.

As far as the influence thing goes, they had a profound impact on TONS of
the folks ya like best. It IS unfortunate that there are a lot of SUCKY
artsy-fartsy bozo bands that cite them as an influence too, even though
their own records BLOW. Makes ya wonder just what the hell they thought
they were hearing. But there's dorks to be found ANY time something good
attracts a crowd. I'd suggest starting with the first two (VU & Nico, White
Light/White Heat), but I'd be very surprised if you don't move on to every
damn thing you can get your hands on. You too, Evan--love 'em or hate 'em,
you should at least HEAR 'em.

(By the way Evan, enjoyed the Adverts review! I for one am glad you'll be
posting these--and Gaye Advert was my very first punk rock crush!).

It's really almost funny to me to hear these discussions amongst folks who
know so MUCH about great bands that NO ONE else knows anything about. As a
group, here, we almost sound tentative about these folks that EVERYbody
knows about.  Kind of amusing.  Hendrix really DOES rule, as do the Velvets;
don't let the fact that other people think so too discourage you, LOL!

And as for Jimi and the guitar thing: It really IS eerie to hear someone
with such a complete, fluent and fluid connection to his instrument--that
there really ARE people out there so completely able to express themselves
through a musical instrument is really one of the wilder miracles of life.
I second Dennis' recommendations ("enjoy Jimi for the genius he was (esp the
first two Lps and his BBC stuff). I especially dig his earlier, more
blues-influenced music"), and I'd add that the early stuff absolutely
CREATED heaviness in R&R, and is psychedelic as HELL. Think the first 2
Blue Cheer lps (which I LOVE), only, to be honest, 1000's of times better.

Paige,

This could go on all day, but the first four thoughts that popped into my
hear were:

Night of the Hunter
Witness for the Prosecution.
It Happened One Night
The Court Jester

I've always had a major problem with hipper-than-thou New York art school
crap(VU, Talking Heads, etc.), though he/they did a lot of great stuff. If
I had to choose one of the three options given, however, I'd have to go for
overrated.

I don't the album, but I'd always heard "We're only in it for the money" was
Zappa's reaction to Sgt Pepper....is that not the case?
