What made me lock in at the tail end of that blurb is that they had
specified "Alternative Music" which I interpreted to be a catch-all phrase
used by the newsreader for R & R out of the mainstream. The FCC's goal is to
create more diversity on the dial. Unfortunately, we aren't like the U.K.
with all of those organized not-for-profit musical preservation societies &
clubs that would qualify for these low power licenses in a heartbeat and make
radio generally more interesting.

>I bet the churches grab

Well, they have the half of the AM dial that talk radio hasn't taken
over, so it would stand to reason...

Big ole nod of agreement!! I saw Lou Reed on his New York tour and Mo opened
for him in Atlanta. She was accompanied by Half Japanese and sang the most
moving "Pale Blue Eyes" I will ever hear in my life. And remember she used
to work in a Wal-Mart in the 80's!!!

Frankenstein V and I'm wondering if any of you out there who might have seen
us/taken a few pics/ have old posters could scan and send me said photos for

E-mail me off list if this is something you'd might want (the CD) too.

Hey Glynis...you've gotta have a couple of shots, eh?

Thanks folks!

Subject: Low Power Radio

There seems to be room in the mix for alternative music programming on the
new low power stations if it fits into one of the categories the FCC plans
to license. For example, here in DC, the Mount Pleasant Broadcasting club
http://www.mtpleasantbroadcasting.org/ has been working to put together a
proposal for a community-based station with lots of news and community
programming (broadcasting local community meetings and the like) along with
latino music shows (for the large latino contingent in the neighborhood) and
hip hop and alternative rock shows (for the large indie rocker population in
the neighborhood). We've heard that there is room for three low power
licenses in DC, so we're going to take a chance and put in an application.

Becoming a non-profit org. is not that costly, really. It's a pain in the
ass to go through the application, but once you do, you can apply for all
kinds of grants. And if you've got a Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts
organization near you (and if you don't know, email me and I'll get you the
contact person nearest you) they can probably provide you with a free lawyer
to help you through the process.

The Low Power Radio Coalition http://www.lowpowerradio.org/ is planning to
put together seminars and/or a workbook for how to apply for the licenses.
Contact them for more information.

Yes, the religious orgs are going to be lining up around the block to apply
for the stations, but the FCC's stated purpose is to encourage diversity on
the airwaves, so if they've got options, they will probably try to avoid
giving all the licenses to religious broadcasters. But the FCC can only
give licenses to people that apply for them.

It's a great opportunity to get unheard voices on the air. I frankly did
not think this had a chance of passing, but the FCC is obviously rather
passionate about it, given that they went against the wishes of the
mega-money National Assn of Broadcasters. If you've got an inkling that
there may be room for a low power station in your area, go out and put one
together! You'll never have such a great opportunity again.

Can I hear an Amen?

Thank you very much.

Paige

Someone asked about Aussie band the Executives 'Moving In A Circle'.
It's on Hen's Teeth Vol.1 CD which is a re-ish of vinyl comps 'Psychedelia'
Vols 1 & 2 - the track was on the vinyl Vol.2.

Re MICHAEL BROWN: here's an extract from the Fuzz,Acid & Flowers
entry for Left Banke (online at www.delerium.co.uk, 'Archives' section)
which gives some details on the reissues & reformed group releases:
"Brown went on to form Montage in 1969, which was really another vehicle
for his songwriting and production skills and later he formed Stories (in
1972)
and The Beckies (in 1976). More recently, circa 1998, he was responsible
for producing / engineering / songwriting and providing keyboards on
Yvonne Vitale's On This Moment CD. Sadly, the album, on the aptly named
"Endangered" record label, was quickly withdrawn and less than 200 copies
are thought to have survived. "

Tony The Tyger Presents FUZZ, FLAYKES & SHAKES:
Recently picked up Vols 1 & 2 - and they're G-R-R-R-EAT. Anyone into
Pebbles/Highs In The Mid-60s etc. should get these without delay. Updates
to give these more deserved plugs are in the pipeline for the Fuzz, Acid &
Flowers site. There are several previously-comped cuts but overall a great
mix of garage, psych, and folk-punkers. Hat's off to Lee Joseph for
finally
compiling the awesome macho-fuzz-punker Day Breaks At Dawn by the
Backgrounds, before my 80s David Shutt tape of it finally disintegrates.

If you're reading this Lee, please contact me offline - I've 2 contacts for

SOUL, INC. per the comp's information request.

Reed may have been a pioneer but he's such an asshole and takes himself so
seriously as an "artist" it's almost too painful to listen to VU recs in the
context of the time they came out in.

lemmy from motorhead once dissed some band, "they were influenced by lou
reed, and NOTHING good can come from that."

another of my favorites was when lou reed the "serious artist" gave spoken
word readings of VU songs at some college and got standing ovations.

and have you heard that songs for drella crap? awful!

but my fave lou reed story was related by a friend of a friend who worked in
a NYC rec store and worshipped reed. he had some rare reed rec behind the
counter and reed walked in. so he got all excited and asked him to sign the
rec and reed gave him a bunch of attitude. then while reed was in the store
he changed his mind, approached the guy and told him he'd sign the rec, and
at that point the guy was so miffed he told him to go fuck himself. very
funny.

john cale question:
what surf/hot rod recs did he play on? i'm just curious.

give a spoken word performance in SF, and his lyrics ARE poetry. Love 'im

Hi Paige, how did you like that Pretty Things disc? Anyway, here's some
suggestions, did you ever rent from Video Americain? They have the best
selection probably. See if you can get "Highway Patrolman" directed by Alex
Cox, the genius who brought us my favorite movie "Repo Man". Highway
Patrolman or "El Patrullero" was filmed in Mexico in Spanish (I trust
subtitles will be okay for you in pre-twin birth mode) and follows a young
man from graduation from the academy to his life as a highway patrolman.
Brilliant. For a psychedelic, mind blowing film experience check out
Alexandro Jodorowsky's "Holy Mountain". Or his psychedelic western which was
also the first midnight movie, "El Topo". And speaking of westerns I
recommend Jim Jarmusch's "Dead Man". A little closer to the mainstream but
still off beat and good for at least a few laughs is "Flirting With
Disaster" starring Ben Stiller and Patricia Arquette, directed by David
O'Russel who's first feature was a very good but much darker film "Spanking
The Monkey" and his latest "Three Kings" is perhaps still in theatres now.
I'll think of more soon but in closing, since there's already been mention
of film noir see if you can't find "The Big Combo".

I'm not sure what you're axeing here, but I've heard
Mick Collins lives w/his mom and doesn't have a car.
Therefore, when he goes out, his mom has to drive him

The Hatebombs "Hunt You Down" (Dionysus)

I'm proud to review this one because these guys are the only kickass band
that I've heard who are from Florida. This new album has great covers of 60s
garage classics "Going Away Baby" and "Almost There". In addition there are
13 great originals. The sound can be best described as 60s garage mixed with
punk. Hell, ROCKNROLL is the best description.
Anyway, I love both their albums, the debut being ahead of this one by
the bat of a tick's eyelash. For all intents and purposes though, I have a
gut feeling that most people will like this one more.

If Chicago's The Nerves come thru any of your Bompin' towns, check their
shit out! Last night they came thru Minneapolis and tore up the place and
for a humble crowd no less. They sound like garage rock meets Scratch Acid!
Highly recommended rock and roll action, no lie!!

I read in the NY Times the other week that this is being played at the
Museum of Modern Art in NYC (I believe, though might be another NY museum)
as part of a series celebrating 20th century electronic music
compositions... the article described it as a great work of the medium.
One of my more bizarre finds in the cutout bins was a sealed 8-track tape
of Metal Machine Music. What a jam to play while cruisin' in your car!

Swedish, they played last year, from Stockholm I believe. Saw part of their
set, remembered they
toured at one time with social d, they were on the bill w/Gluecifer, Queens of
the Stoneage, Electric Frankenstein and one other band. I thought the other
bands blew 'em away, but that' s just my chump change.

Pick up "Suck And Blow" by the Pink Lincolns. Great Florida punk album.

yes. check out the site at http://www.sxsw You can check the listings w/out
registration. I got some great feedback regarding some of the unknown bands from
up North (Denmark, Finland, Norway,
Swedend)

Five of those played last year, & I've been noticing a trend over the past 5 yrs
at SXSW to do this, booking faves to guarantee sell-outs................ some
bands, (good ex: Man or Astroman?) are HUGE sellouts at larger venues. The
Chubbies have a good following as well. As far as The Bulemics, if you live in
Austin, you can see them anytime, same for Sugar Shack, they come up from
Houston, Nomads are fine, saw their show w/The Hellacopters not long ago. Emo's
always does well w/the Man's Ruin and Estrus showcases...............

I like to pick SXSW showcase bands based on the fact the I DON"T see them
often! Have fun.

Risky! (and not worth it)We always get registration badges, less hassle and you
can go to all the panels, label parties and soak up as much swag as you can
handle. PLUS, you get first entry at every venue, no matter how long the line.
A wristband only gets you in if the badge people have left any room. I know
last year badges were $65, (I think), but I would bet the prisce escalates each
week.

Uh, that's actually "Suck and Bloat." It's a good
album, but "Back from the Pink Room" (their first) is
even better.

It was reissued by Bam Caruso in the 80's, but that one is probably as easy
(or as hard) to find as the original Montage LP on Laurie. You should expect
to pay anywhere from $15.00 to $35.00 for it on EBay. It is Michael Brown to
the fullest though. The tracks sound like Left Banke out takes or b sides.
None of them equal "Pretty Ballerina" or "She May Call You Up Tonight," but
still worth a listen. Easier to find, and very good, is the soundtrack to
UltraViolet with two collaborative songs between Steve Martin (the original
LB singer) & Michael Brown + 2 Montage songs. That should be under $20.00.

I personally dig their music a lot. Metal? Not in my opinion. Rock would
be my word for it. Other Nordics, help out. Leather and denim is very
likely to be seen in the audience.
