I heard him give absolute SHIT to a Sydney radio interviewer before
calling her a stupid bitch and hanging up on her. Funny thing is, he did
most of the talking - it was like he was pissing HIMSELF off. I've only
ever heard one V.U. song, something about waiting for a drug dealer -

That F*^&#)*g does it. Now I HAVE to open up my carton of 45's and
cruise through it. I know I have a Slaughter and the Dogs single buried
in there (but which one?).

I know there's also a copy of "Muff Diving" by I can't remember who.
Plus maybe DMZ.

This is going to open up a whole can of worms (or box of singles) and
tie up a whole evening.

Subject: Nightmare From The Underworld

I just bought a second-hand copy of a compilation called "Nightmare From
The Underworld Vol.2", with 20 Canadian garage/punk bands from the 60's.
And that's all I know, really. When I came home I noticed this message on
the back of the sleeve: "Included inside: A brief biography of groups that
appeared on both Vol. 1 and 2". Which of course is missing from my copy!
So, basically I've got two choices:

1. I can ask for a xeroxed copy of the liner notes from somebody on the
bomp list (anyone?)
2. I should go back to the store and get my money back.

Any suggestions? If this is an impossible-to-find album, I probably should
go for alternative 1 (I paid $12 for it - is that a good buy, even without
the liner notes?).

BTW: The first song on the album ("Everything" by Quiet Jungle) RIPS!!

If I remember correctly most copies of this went out without liner notes for
some reason, which is why Hitomi's included them in her "Rare & Translated
Liner Notes" section: http://60spunk.m78.com/. Nightmares #2 isn't all that
hard to track down - volume 1 is the real challenge - but $12 is a good buy.
Both volumes have just been released on a double CD by Sound Stories
(same label that did the Scum of the Earth CD), hopefully with improved
sound.

swedish mainstream TVchannels or only in the swedish zines, don't care what
they're thinking about music, women, burghers or whatever... Maybe should
you think just like me, cause you would probably note at that moment that
ttheir "Total 13" lp is just a great great double side of pure R&R energy.
They're probably something else than "garage", but who cares, I won't miss
any of their forthcoming sides and I can' wait really for their new lp.
Forget how these queers look like (is that so important ????), and spin
"Spotlight The Sun" once again. Verdict ?
You got so many killer bands today in Sweden that I understand that it''s
maybe too much for you, and that it's maybe becoming hard to find one to
crucify , in the name of the "true garage cause". Did you forget Europe and
Roxette ? here are the bastards, not the BB. Spain is probably the less snob
garage country in the world, was there a few months ago, had beers at
various garage bars, the BB and Hellacopters were spined between the Lyres
and the Monomen, and that was just great, even the most mop-tops heads were
getting crazy on that stuff.
BB rule, just as much as the strollers, Sewergrooves, Maggots, dee rangers,
turpentines, rockets, royal beat conspiracy, union 69 and thousands more...
but maybe is there also a norway guy on this list that will explain me why i

In 1989, Lou came to Kansas City for his "New York" tour. Prior to the show, he
did a radio interview with a then-50K watt screamer of a station. Just as the
interview was winding up, the jock said something to the effect that Lou should
be proud of the long way he's come from his Jewish middle-class suburban roots.
There was dead air for about five seconds -- my jaw hit the ground when I heard
it -- then, finally Lou mumbled something about his childhood not being middle
class at all. Guess it's just a coincidence that he's never been back since.

Still, the funniest exchanges are in the Lester Bangs book "Psychotic Reactions
and Carburetor Dung." Lou and Lester really faced off in the early 70s.

Eugene - John Henry's - Friday Feb 25th with The Brainwashers and The Electric

Portland - Satyricon - Sat Feb 26th with Backyard Babies, Yo-Yos

The last cuts on the new album for Dionysus are being mixed as I type. All is
set for an April release.

Thee Crumpets will play some 14 dates in Europe in May

Can someone recommend the best domestic distributor of Screaming Apple

I can't seem to find them anywhere nor can I track 'em down on any online

And Logie asked<< Please, please, please, please . . . . . . be a bit more
descriptive. This is a great mental hotfoot. I gotta know how Lou met the
moment.>>

Well, this was in a record store in a mall on Long Island. All the employees
were there that day, even if they were not working. When Lou finally came out
they were all a titter. Lou sat down behind the signing desk. He was wearing
sunglasses and drinking a Diet Coke. My friend Tom pulled the Lou Rawls LP
out of his bag and some of the employees spotted it and started laughing out
loud. Reed was obviously really ticked off. He was glaring at my friend, even
through the sunglasses, like he wished he could make him explode. And then he
took his Sharpie and signed it with an unreadable scrawl. I was the next
person in line and had him sign a copy of a recent pressing of the first VU
LP and he grumbled "I didn't even know they still made this."

We got a good laugh out of that for the next decade or so. Then last year Tom
gets an assignment from a guitar magazine to interview Reed. The interview is
set up to take place at Reed's apartment. So my friend shows up and Reed
invites him into the foyer area at the bottom of a flight of stairs. Reed
asks him to take off his shoes and excuses himself, saying he'll be right
back. An uncomfortably long 10 minutes later he comes back down and retrieves
my friend. Tom starts asking him about guitar tones on his last record and
Reed seems into it and things are going well. Then, for what reason I don't
know, he proceeds to remind Reed of the Rawls incident and tells him that he
was the guy. Reed says nothing in reply so my friend says, "I was surprised
that you signed it and even more surprised that you didn't hit me." Reed says
something like, "Well, maybe I'm not the asshole that some people paint me to
be." Maybe.

Subject: RADIO A GO-GO! Moves to KRLA 1110 AM!!!

Hey Bompers!

Just wanted to let everyone know that my alternative '60s radio show, RADIO A
GO-GO!, has been picked up by legendary Los Angeles rock radio station KRLA
1110 AM. (A little over a year ago, KRLA switched to an "all talk" format
after ~ 30 years of being a music station. I'm ecstatic that they decided
to break their all talk format with RADIO A GO-GO!) Starting tonight, you
can hear RADIO A GO-GO! every Saturday night 7pm - 9pm and every Sunday night
10pm - 1am.

RADIO A GO-GO! is dedicated to presenting all styles of the incredible music
of the '60s including lower-charting hits, album tracks, B-sides, rarities,
'60s tv and radio commercials, soundtrack music, tv show and cartoon themes,
celebrity interviews (Jackie Deshannon, Mark Volman of The Turtles, Ron Dante
of The Archies, Florence LaRue of The 5th Dimension, legendary drummer Hal
Blaine, Freda Payne, Paula Prentiss, Nino Tempo & April Stevens...),
nostalgic '60s promos, etc., as well as some high-charting hits. I play all
kinds of deep catalog stuff and other '60s "sounds" that you won't readily,
if ever, hear on traditional "oldies" stations. RADIO A GO-GO! is like an
aural history of the '60s.

Please check out RADIO A GO-GO! and let me know what you think!!!

Artists played on RADIO A GO-GO! include:

The Mamas and the Papas, Ann-Margret, The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, The
Archies, Jackie Deshannon, Sonny & Cher, The Turtles, Sergio Mendes, Rolling

PS did someone say "Waiting for the Man" was made better by EATER? Uh, yeah.
Right. <giggle>

Eater never covered that, nor have I ever heard that song. They did do a
great cover of a song with a similar name, though, called "Waiting For My
Man". Is the one you're talkin about VU gospel?

One of my favorite 60's psych/garage bands is coming back - with all their original members! I think their one of the best "garage" bands from that era.

http://www.richardandyounglions.com is their temporary website where you can even e-mail Richard. I can't wait to hear them do "Open Up Your Door".

Anyone else here remember or is a fan of theirs?

It's obvious you're new to this list because NOBODY talks about bands who
actually record for Bomp! (I hope to change that now that we're working
with The Embrooks and The Greenehornes, but that's another story....)

Anyway, the story is that Beachwood Sparks is releasing their CD thru
SubPop but Bomp is doing the vinyl (as well as some future projects,
hopefully). We are endeavoring to make the vinyl edition a superior buy,
because like the band, I much prefer vinyl. The cover art will be far more
stunning, there'll be a full-size poster, and there is also one very good
song that's not on the CD (and one or two missing). Hope that explains it.

Small Stone, a terrific jangly rock band including 2 ex-members of BJM, is
currently in the studio working on their debut CD for Bomp. I think it's
something everyone on this list should enjoy. You can watch the Bomp
website (News page) for further developments. Oh, they do have one track
out on a pretty good 'Brit-Pop' compilation called Cafe Bleu, sponsored by
the L.A. mod club of the same name. It's a very old track, with members no
longer in the band, but still worth hearing. The whole CD is pretty darn
good. It should be available everywhere (distr by Caroline)

No, Dominic's book is a collection of clippings from teen magazines (mostly
mine!), not a work of fiction. The book in question is by one of my
favorite SF writers, Lewis Shiner (his "Deserted Cities of the Heart" is a
masterpiece), it's called "Glimpses" (after the Yardbirds song, I wonder?)
and it includes episodes on Hendrix, Brian, The Doors, John Lennon, others.
It was in print very briefly. I true fan's effort, very authentic to the
spirit of the '60s. Amazon has some detailed reviews. You may be able to
find a copy thru one of the rare book dealers: I recommend Bookfinder.com.

Talking of the mythical Domenic, he called today. Hadnt heard from him since he
disappeared from San Francisco on Christmas Eve threatening to move to New York.
He's in San Diego, his new book about the Sunset Strip in the sixties is finished
(although it probably wont be out until at least this summer) and he's doing
something with AMC. A man of many talents.
