Hey Bompers!

Just wanted to let everyone know that my alternative '60s radio show,
RADIO A
GO-GO!, has been picked up by legendary Los Angeles rock radio station
KRLA
1110 AM. (A little over a year ago, KRLA switched to an "all talk"
format
after ~ 30 years of being a music station. I'm ecstatic that they
decided
to break their all talk format with RADIO A GO-GO!) Starting tonight,
you
can hear RADIO A GO-GO! every Saturday night 7pm - 9pm and every Sunday
night
10pm - 1am.

Yeah, that was pretty entertaining... Gabrielle as the female protagonist
of what looked like an early MTV music video of the warlord's version of
the song.

>I'm not sure I was supposed to like it, but it beat that awful version of

I'm betting nobody was supposed to actually like it... Except in a very
Broadway musical kinda way.

Actually Glynis and I briefly mentioned Carol Shelyne off-list, I think
her career from Shindig(?) dancer which led to a guest spot on Patty
Duke when their network was trying to link those two shows together, was
an interesting attempt to make the "dancer with the glasses" a star.

I'd be really interested to interview her, but Garry Marshall once gave
us a real truism about hollywood: something like, "the problem with
actresses who were popular briefly is that they married rich producers
and changed their names, I can't even find them, so how could you."

Now if I can ever get a decent copy of Patty's appearance on Shindig...

I think they only did 3 45s, the other one (last?) is the great
bubblegummy "Nasty". (the flip is a ballad but I don't think it's really
good, not like "Once Upon A Smile" anyway)
(is there anything special about the promo copies of "You Can Make It"

with covers (in french) of "The Hip", "All Day & All Of The Night",
"Bird Doggin'"... They include Rudy (ex-Dutronc) on vocals and Iwan
(No-Talents) on bass. Next week will see the 1st show of their local

they cancelled their euro tour & (sadly) split again. That's 2 more

Hmm...this is interesting. Montreal's Les Incapables used to do "All Day

Subject: "The Two of Us" on VH1a real potential laffer

Has anyone caught the VH1 promos for "The Two of Us" movie? It's a
fictionalized account of Lennon and McCartney "meeting" at the Dakota
in the late 70s. Based on the commercial they end up--of course--playing
together at a piano and eventually donning costumes and skulking
about/hamming it up in Central Park "in true Liverpuddlian madcap
fashion"??!! It looks absolutely awful, so make sure you're
watching/taping. I think it's on sometime in Feb. Aidan Quinn is
playing McCartney and he looks decent--if the movie was set in the
summer of '69. The guy playing Lennon, though, looks and sounds
absurd. This one could go down as a classic bad flick....

My girl Amy and I were watching and grooving to "Out of Sight" last
night and both of wondered how seriously teens of the mid-60s took such
stuff. It's obviously not irony-laden like today; did teens go to such
movies for real entertainment and laughs or to neck in the back row?
Were they hip to how really bad and broad the (acting) performances
were? It's wild to see a more-or-less tongue-in-cheek attempt at
retro-chic that's actually the real thing!

BTW the Astronauts were AWESOME. Great singer! I don't know much
about them; figured before I saw the flick they were an instro group.
Any details?

The Stooges
by Eric Ehrmann

The Stooges were about ready to crash out after a long day. Iggy stands up
on one of the hotel beds and and goes into some of his pre-bedtime
acrobatics. Bouncing up and down in the bed, as if it were a stage, he
points a scornful index finger down to the ground.

"Used to do these moves back home with ? (Question Mark) and the
Mysterians when they'd come through town. they were a bunch of Puerto
Rican dudes from Saginaw, and a killer group," Ig remembers. "They were
being what they really were, but nobody stopped to figure them out. They
were 'out kids' just like us. After '96 Tears,' everything was a drag for
them. That's what happens when your music gets misunderstood."

Maybe not, but when I got that record, I got it at a
show and the guy selling it also had a stock copy.
But the promo and the stock were both the same price,
so I got the promo. Also, I don't know why, but I've
always been fascinated by promo copies ever since I
started collecting records when I was a kid. The
promo's probably worth a little more, but more
importantly, I like how loud the 45's mixed. It
explodes when you play it, just like all good 45s
should, in my humble opinion.

So, maybe a die-hard collector could explain it better
than I could. I know why I bought the record. It's
great at any price.

the conversation turned to 60's music. After about 10 minutes he introduced
himself as Don Murray(first Turtles drummer) . Of course, following this I
loaded him up with questions.

According to Don, "Out of Sight"this was the last thing he did with the
Turtles. He loathed the pop direction the band was heading for and got into
many a brawl with bandmembers over wanting to play rock n roll. He also said
that their new drummer was on the set during the shooting of the scene.

He was living in Vista (1/2 hour North of San Diego) when I spoke with him,

Stock copies of a 45 usually are worth more than promo copies.
Sometimes, stock is worth much more. I know that I personally like stock
copies because they usually have the nicer color labels vs. the plain white
labels of many promo copies.
I have traded NM stock copies of a record for the same NM record
(promo) copy, plus I received a good record kicked in to sweeten the deal.
That tells you something.

greetings music lovers!!

bright n sunny winter morning in london town, great weather for ...er....
spending the day in a recording studio
(the historic pathway studio of north london)

#1 stooges "funhouse" box set
yeah yeah YEAH!!!!! i finally received this yesterday and what can i say????
it's a labor of love, and i already love it back. i'm workin' my way through
the 17-minute version of "l.a. blues" <g>

#2 (s) laughter and the dog (s)
someone said "i always loved the eater version... and i actually think that
slaughter and
the dogs take on "white light white heat," may possibly out-do the
original."

hmmm i dunno 'bout dat personally but i do dig their versions of "quick joey
small"
and their 90mph take on "who are the mystery girls". the latter especially.
both are on their decca lp.

#3 the velvets' "think i'm falling in love" a.k.a. "fever in my pocket"
yeah yeah yeah this is a big fave of mine. check out the live version on the
v.u. cd box set, recorded at the gymnasium apr 1 67 it's different from the
version often heard on bootlegs (v.u. and so on etc) and also different from
the "crunchy bam-bam" studio backing track version.

#4 metal machine music
someone said "One of my more bizarre finds in the cutout bins was a sealed
8-track tape
of Metal Machine Music. What a jam to play while cruisin' in your car!"

fantaaaastic! i hope you snapped it up ... iwoulda done. there was istr a
quad mix of m.m.m. the rear channels of which were the front channels
backwards, or something. anyways, whadda concept.

#5 info request
has anyone seen the movie "gold" featuring two soundtrack cuts from the
m.c.5 ???? i have the album and it's a real oddball. never seen anything
written about the movie though. someone must know it ????

Thanks for the question. I thought this was an excellent band, and it sold
pretty well, but nobody in 60s circles has ever talked about them. Funny,
because although they have the Spacemen 3 influence, their stronger
influences range from the Monkees to 60s folk rock. Anyway, the story is
that I was turned on to this UK band by Sonic Boom of Spacemen 3, whom
they'd asked to produce them. He gave me all the demos, and I contacted the
band suggesting we release the demos (which were perfectly okay) until they
had something new to offer. Turned out the band had already broken up, but
we put out the album (on CD & vinyl) anyway. It was one of the last Voxx
releases, in 1993.

Has anyone else out there heard it? I recommend it highly, especially if
you share Patrick's tastes. And you should be able to get the vinyl from
Bomp for $5 or maybe even less!

P.S. For Frank, Small Stone is from Hollywood, CA.

I too have been unable to raise "The Wayback Machine" the past two
Saturdays. There isn't the error message you get when the allowable
connections are maxed out... there just isn't any message at all. Other
RealAudio sites are coming through fine, leading me to believe that the
problem lies with the KDHX netcast.

Subject: Songs you might *not* want to play at your wedding

While the "Songs for the Wedding" thread was going, I kept thinking about
"My Baby's Book" by The Real Kids. Somehow I don't think it's the kind of
thing a bride wants to hear on her wedding day, what with lyrics like, "My
baby loves me, she knows I'm tryin' to be good... But if I mess up it's
understood." I mean, sure, forgiveness is divine and all and she's just
taken you for better or for worse, but my guess is that on your wedding
day, you'd both like to believe that you're gonna be better, not worse.

I was making an open ended generalization. I said they "tend to appeal to
the literate intelligentsia music crowd and critics". I didn't say
"exclusively" or "only". Cliques and categories be damned.

First up was the NEPTUNAS with their garagey DIY party
down ambiance - with on stage go-go
> dancers Dave Arnson and Wally Ann bringing on visual
overload. Pam is about to have her baby any day now
and her inspired bass playing last night will no doubt
insure that her new child is born ready to rock.
Next was THE MYSTERIES with Jimmy Wilsey (responsible
for the great guitar sound on Chris Isaak's early
records) They have created a weave of dark,
> moody and beautifully layered western psychedelic
twang. Jimmy was all in black with a cowboy hat, satin
cape lined in red and dark shades – and
I believe he is a superhero after watching THE
MYSTERIES play, as are the boy wonders in his band.
This was the best I've ever seen them, which is

synergy of the acid theme and the good

drumming from Dusty Watson moving it along
> at a clip with dexterous guitarist Dave Wronski and
bass player Mike Sullivan arriving at both trad and
nouveau conclusions simultaneously within the same
songs. SLACKTONE has a turbo-charged tough, tight
musical style. 00 SPY CAR (double naught spy car) had
the room in a collective jawdrop – which is saying a
lot since the musicians in many of these
bands are hands down the best anywhere playing
anything. These guys went out on

on, ad infinitum – their influences are all over the

Insects get in some wild ride psychedelic jams. Dave
was definitely the man of the hour for
> putting this supercool show together – he had three
screens of video and slides going – some sergeant
peppers, some ultraman, some wahini surfers
> having their way with the tubes – plenty of visual
stimulation. Between bands, MC REVEREND DAN hosted a

> Huge twister board covering the dancefloor and a lot

REVENTLOS, another envelope pushing
> instrumental/sometimes surf band whose influences
are from metal to african folk and around the sonic
globe in between. Greg Staples is an inventive,
innovative and versatile player and as I hear tell he
writes THE REVENTLOS songs as well. They looked tres
elegant in their tuxedos as
> they totally rocked out. Their song Western Stars is
a beautiful weave of African folk and American twang.
All their songs are really fun,
> particularly the ones with "Reventlo" in the title.
Congratulations again to Insect Dave for putting this
night of great music together. There was
a lot of information to absorb – similar to the
enhanced psychedelic state - no ingestion even
necessary – it was a total contact high and a really

Yeah despite the non-appearance of the Real Kids (something about a sick
guitarist, said one club kid), Walter Lure and the Waldos rocked on any how.
His new Waldos (new being a relative term) put on a fine show, doing some of
Walters Heartbreakers chestnuts, the high points from the "rent Party" disc
and a cover of Chinese Rocks, which he called on Joey Ramone for help on. The
tall one had been in the house earlier, but had checked out by that point.
Finally Walter & co wound up the night with a ripping cover of the Stones
Last Time. Definitely worth the trip in the cold!!!
best day of the 7 day weekend....Moparlary
