Hi,
I just got my copy of Mystery Action's debut cd: Here's to another Year.
I've played it twice. Great mod/power pop/ for modern times. Evan FOster of
Boss Martians fame is the head honcho, but musically that's irrelevant.
This is just mind blowin' Small Faces/Cheap Trick/Husker Du inspired pop
sung really well and played with a lot of punch and with a great sound (not
retro though). If you're into this kind of stuff,
do check this out- it's worth it.

Man, I couldn't agree more! And by the way, I think this applies to some

make themselves feel important, they must CRITICIZE...it's so transparent.
I've never scene anyone that I felt was truly COOL ragging on all the bands

the scene would expand...and eventually it would be big enough to influence
major label stars..(if for nothing else but a laff, who wouldn't enjoy
watching Alanis sing some cool garage cover instead of the putrid crap she

It's quite common for people to come up to me at the club and ask what I'm
playing and if I can make a tape for them. (I also get a fair number of
people asking if I can play something more contemporary, Oasis, Abba,
Madonna, etc! but that's another story...) And of course, they get a tape
at the next gig or in the mail with a representative selection of 60s
garage/psych etc with a list of song titles/band names and some further
information, and details of places that sell this stuff. This doesn't make
me a great guy or anything - I do it because I want these people to
continue to pay their £4 on the door every time I put on a gig, I want the
bands that I like to gain more support, I want a decent crowd at any venue
I go to because it always makes for a better time. As far as the "garage
scene" is concerned, I'd rather be a small fish in a big pond than the only
fish in the pond.

The Mood or The Untamed but when you mention the ball-busting power (btw
thanks for info on Tupper) of "Over Under Sideways Down" or "Midnight To

out there that avoid the real movers'n'shakers (Yardbirds, Pretties, Who,
Small Faces etc) and spend small fortunes on 45s by bands who only ever
recorded one or two or three 45s. Now that is insane! What is even more
stupid is when you try explaining to someone the worth of an artist/band who
has kicked arse for twenty five consistent years with bugger all recognition
and who's records are available for fifty cents on eBay. Still every man or

>Subject: Re: Re:"Collectors"
>I always tell people, I don't collect records, but I do buy a lot of them.

Yes, the concept of the "collector" does carry rather unsavoury
connotations - nightmarish imagery of the bearded, obese 39 year-old
hobbyist who lives in his mother's basement and spends every cent of his
pension on his "interest". He views his rare records as "trophies" in
much the same way as a stamp or coin collector.

Some further observations about this gentleman:

1.He doesn't own a working record player.

2.He gets all the good stuff at record fairs before you even turn up...
because he's been camping outside since 3am.

3.He has never spent more than $3 for a record ("They're only plastic!"),
including one you once shelled out $200 for. And his is in better
condition.

4.99% of his 78,456 item (he counts them) collection is absolute crap,
however.

5.In fact, his mother's house is so full of records that he has to live
in a caravan in the backyard. With his mother.

6.He won't sell you any of his 300 mint '60s punk 45s because he "needs"
them to maintain his "run" of consecutive serial numbers.

7.He won't even sell you his swaps, because he might need them for "cross
referencing"

8.He wonders why you like that '60s punk rubbish in the first place.

9.He always wears a track suit.

10.The same one.

11.He phones you every night to talk about the "hobby" with his "new
collector buddy".

Well said, Ari.

Personally, I absolutely *love* seeing kids get into garage. (And I'm
thrilled when I hear one of my students telling me they love a CD I'm
playing, be it ? & the Mysterians, The Remains, The Swingin' Neckbreakers,
The Makers, The Resonars, The Vipers, or whoever.) I'm even happier to see
them at all-ages shows. The future of rock'n'roll is not in the hands of
those who've been around 15-20 years... Many of the people I was hanging
out with when I was 18 are now married with kids and don't have the time to
go out all the time the way they used to. For a rock'n'roll scene to
survive, there has to be a good number of younger people involved.

Now back to Ari's point... It bothers me that some of the younger crowd
seem so willing to discard the 80s scene. Put simply, I doubt many of the
current bands would have existed if the 80s thing hadn't happened. It's
just a matter of "begats," after all. Who was influenced by who, etc. What
band grew out of what scene... So many of today's groups worship The Devil
Dogs. Well, they were a damn great band. But The Devil Dogs grew out of The
Rat Bastards (who, by the way, spent a summer playing as the Surfinks), all
or most of whom were hanging out on the NYC garage scene before that. (And
the Rat Bastards were one of the main bands on the remnants of the garage
scene in 1988. And did a GREAT version of "Why.") This kind of thing can be
said for many other bands, people, etc.

I'll admit it... It bothers me when I hear someone tell me that the 80s
scene was stupid. I was there and enjoyed the hell out of it. I saw some
amazing bands, made some great friends, heard some great rock'n'roll, and
had a wonderful time. As much as I love everything that's happened since, I
don't understand what makes it "better" in any way. I'm not saying it's
worse, either, just that every era has its greatness. Shutting yourself out
from any part makes no sense to me. Yeah, there's lots of music in
existence that does nothing for me. But it seems that people just dismiss
the 80s scene without having heard much (if any!) of it.

Happy to have a snow day,

Blair

Quite true. This is something you'll hear Greg Prevost or Andy Babiuk of
The Chesterfield Kings talk about in interviews. They find it amazing how
someone will drool over The Chocolate Watchband or some far more obscure
group, but deny the genius of (at least) the early Rolling Stones.

More Bob Hund information. The Nomads have done a cover on a Bob Hund song called Edvin Medvind on the Mans Ruin 7" Iron Dream and Bob Hunds singer Thomas Öberg has on several occasions been guest singer with the Nomads (they have done songs like Cock in my pocket, Jailhouse Rock (Dean Carter style), Search & Destroy and Kick out the Jams).
Members from Bob Hund has also produced the coming album by Robert Johnsson and the Punchdrunks (ex Rumblers, Bottle Ups) and the songs I've heard sounds great!

Another example of this type of collector: several years ago, Justina and I
were in Sounds on St. Marks. In fact, this must have been more than
several years ago because they still had vinyl in the big bins in the
middle of the store. Anyway, Justina found a copy of the Gang of Four's
Entertainment! album for something like $4.99 which was cool since for some
reason we didn't have it. Moments later, Justina was set upon by this
rumpled whiny collector guy who was pleading with her to let him buy the lp
instead, that apparently he'd been looking all over for it. She politely
refused, and in a last-ditch effort to convince her the guy said "I don't
even know who they are, but it's one of the only 'Rolling Stone Top 100
Albums of All Time' that I'm missing!"

If they'd had more of those albums we would have bought them all.

Here Rob I don't agree. Although I buy CDs I prefer getting stuff on vinyl
as long as the mastering is well done. I really hate looking thru cds to buy
them or take em out to play them. It's physical. The music is still what
matters the most so if there's bonus cuts on the cd, I get the cd... but I
love records. It's not about collecting: I'd rather have all the Sundazed
45s than the original copy of the Keggs! (I know, if I sold that K's 45 I

I agree with you, buy musical taste is a personal thing, some like one thing
some like another, so it's good to try new stuff, especially if your young.
If your too narrow you miss a lot of good music. I like jazz{early},
blues{especially jump, and delta},country{the good old stuff, not the bland
new stuff} and of course 50'n rock{sun, rockabilly,burgess,wray, etc}60's
rock{British, r&B,waiters Sonics, pebbles, searchers etc,freakbeat} soul,
rockabilly, western swing , hillbilly boogie etc, and definitely not
Brittany spears etc.

the big diff here is whether people appreciate something for what it is as
opposed to those who only appreciate it for its investiment potential,
whether its records, cars, guitars, etc. If the music's never heard, the car
never driven or guitar never played, for fear the value will drop, then
you're an embalmer. The only appreciation is the check after the deal is

Okay this will probably earn me a royal flaming from all the audio heads out
there, but I'm happy as a cat in a tuna store with my 20 year old Technics
SL-D2 direct drive.
yeah the audio heads will yelp that there is some motor noise when you turn
the volume up to 11 in your fine sound proofed oak panelled listening room.
But in the real world I haven't noticed it.
I like to make compilations and the direct drive is easy to cue without
wreckin' the guts, like you'd do with a belt drive machine. From a mechanical
engineering standpoint, belt drives are doomed from the day they leave the
plant. The constant pull of the belt between the motor and the platter
eventually makes the bearings in the motor go to that great hardware store in
the sky.
I've managed to score good working drive drives at yard sales for under
$10 bucks from unsuspecting laser dupes, so they are out there to he had for
the price of a couple of happy meals....!
    a happy direct driver...Moparlary

someone on the punk list mentioned that there's a comp available by the late
70s brit band the circles (band that had the great powerpop tune "opening
up"). i think it's a cd reissue called private life. anyone have this
comp? is this worth checking out?

Rob I mean, if I can get good sound on vinyl & cd, I get the vinyl & I wish
I could only get vinyl cauz it's a lot more pleasant to look thru records
than to look thru cds. And always remember: cds were created to screw you
big time (same price to make them for the company, double price for you at
the store).

Subject: Fuzztones & x-Bomboras & Bomp!

Hey there. Just thought I'd let you folks know, if you don't know already
(I've been away for a long while and haven't had a chance to read lots of
posts), from what I hear, Jake and Johnny of the x-Bomboras have joined the
Fuzztones. They're playing their first gig as a "new" band here in LA on
March 25th, I believe. As I'm sure most of you know, Jake used to be in the
Fuzztones long ago and far away. Also, other remnants of the Bomboras, Dave
and Shane, have worked up The Invisible Men again, and are doing a whole
bunch of shows here very soon, as well.

Just ordered some great stuff from Bomp! Records. Geez, they are fast!
Thumbs up for them. Excited to put the needle on The Miracle Workers, the
first Last (can't believe I just got it), and The Gravedigger V. Wheeee!

Hope everyone here is swell. Missed all the good scoop and glad I'm back.

over and out:

>I keep thinking I should get a much better cartridge, but then I realize
>I'm >gonna play grungy records on it a lot.

I've been told by phonograph sales people the only thing that should damage
the wax, provided you're using relatively up to date gear, is the dust
fibers which get caught under the needle and drag along the inside/surface
of the grooves... it acts like sand paper! So keep yer wax clean!
However, I've been told the very opposite by most everyone else, other
phono dealers too. Right...so who do I believe is telling the truth?
Um...the jackass who wants sell me something, anything, or the guy who
seems to believe a nice needle is gonna last so he doesn't push the quick
SALE? Well, who would you believe? I picked the nice fella who spent
time with me and didn't insist I blindly toss $$$ his way! Again, maybe
this should go to those "scientisits" at Goldmine...

I share the turntable with both shit shape and new LPs and the only problem
I've ever had is as the tip becomes worn the highs loose crispness, "Sssss"
sounds are likely to sound like "SHHHH"...tho' right now I'm having trouble
with a slurring speed control! Otherwise, I've never heard any sound
degradation in any of my oft played records, nor have crappy records hurt
my needle...hell, isn't the needle harder than the wax?

Hmmmm, what are the arguments of direct drive vs. belt drive? I prefer
the direct drive...

Oh, the only trouble I've had with the LP format was when my gear was
cold...I lived in an unheated house, fer five damn years too, anyway, when
it was at sustained 40F or less my LPs would play with a distinct hiss...no
one I've encountered has ever had this problem nor do they know why it
happened!

Heres a good one! Are there any contemporary turntables which can accept a
Ceramic and Magetic cartridge...? The Ceramics sound SO MUCH BETTER, but a
nice, in working order with new tubes (!), hi-fi is hard to find!

enjoy the snow East Coasties!
