I just picked up the GERARD MALANGA archive Cd on Sub
Rosa. Really cool collection. There's a stooges
rehearsal track (@the Factory!) that is unbelievable.

Also got in the mail the ANGUS MAC LISE comp on
Siltbreeze but haven't heard it yet.

The Malanga curated disk i picked up in a neat new
booK/record store Rue des Martyrs. It's called L'OEIL
DU SILENCE. Check it out when you're in paris.

Has anyone heard volume 2 of JACK SMITH's movie
soundtracks (featuring angus and future primitives
tony conrad)? The first one LES EVENING GOWNS DAMNEES
was great.

there's a live lp/cd out on detour, is that what you're thinking of? i think
it's great, but it's is all live. a bunch of their singles are comped on
those *this is mod* series...

speaking of revival sounds, someone (finally) booted the fantastic debut lp
from the chords! the sound is good, though the volume is kinda low.

But it only seems right and natural that a generation rejects its "elders".
If they think the 80s were stupid, then maybe something interesting will
come out of that snotty attitude. I think most people can't get an
expansive/inclusive take on the past until they've grown up a bit.
Personally I like to see what some riled up youngsters can get themselves
into. And I'm not counting Marilyn Manson. no

I collect records because I love to. It's my biggest
passion and has been ever since I was around six. (I
kid you not.) And I, too, collect records to PLAY
them. Unfortunately, I might pass over into "snob"
territory because, like a fool, I've paid a few
"collector scumbag" prices to get some of the records
I want. But with me, you can be sure that that mint-
copy of any great rock 'n' roll 45 won't be in that
condition for long. Not that I don't take care of my
records, mind you, I just feel that records should be
played as LOUD and as OFTEN as possible. I've also
bought my share of records in way less than perfect
shape, but a lot of times they still sound good and
powerful. For example, I just got a copy of "Every
Day and Every Night" by The Trolls (ABC) and it has a
fair amount of distortion from all the play it's
gotten. But it STILL kicks a lot of ass and sounds
great when you play it loud. Maybe I'll find an
upgrade one day, but for now, this copy will do. And
when I posted that I got a Richard and the Young Lions
promo 45, I hope no one got the impression that I was
trying to be snobbish. I'm just a rock 'n' roll fan,
that's all.

Like I said, for whatever it's worth.....

From: Frank Uhle <franku@umich.edu>
Subject: Re: "Collectors"

Being a long-time record nut, no doubt some on this list would consider me
a "Collector," yet I think of myself as a music fan first and foremost.
I do enjoy getting original pressings (especially 45s) more than
reissues of things, though.

One thing about original 45s and Lps (and 78s) that constitutes an
important part of the aesthetic experience for me is the context they
provide. Seeing the band's phone number printed on the label of an
obscure garage 45, or the primitive yet charismatic logo of some
long-forgotten entrepreneur gives a much more palpable sense of where the
music came from, be it humble or otherwise. Also, holding an object that
was "there" in the first place, that some teenager played at a slumber
party on a crappy portable phonograph is cool to me. I actually _like_
having records which are less than mint looking (if they play OK) that
reveal some of their provenance. Like Monkees Lps with girls' lovestruck
scrawl all over them ("Davy DAvy DAVY!"). A reissue can hint at this, but
holding an object that has its own history is just more appealing to me.
Obviously, there are items which are too expensive or otherwise
unobtainable for various reasons, and the music is much more important
than the money it would take to get them... I can listen to 20s and 30s
jazz, blues and hillbilly music on reissues just fine (though I have a few
78s of that stuff which I cherish), as well as those garage classics that
now command hundreds of dollars per 45.

Despite my affection for records, there are some "Collector" geeks who
crack me up too. I've certainly seen my share of guys with more of a
relationship with their record collection than their social circle, or
obsessives who lay awake at night because their copy of such and such is
only VG ++, not Mint -, but the weirdest to me are the ones who only want
stuff that "charted" - it's like music that was not played on the radio
somewhere (anywhere) is completely worthless. There is a married couple
of this ilk that I see at record shows, middle-aged folks, who have this
big 3-ring binder notebook, with neatly typed pages listing every record
they need. The man methodically goes through the record bins and reads
off each item and the woman looks it up in the big notebook. God knows
what kind of music they want, I suspect it's McGuire Sisters and Pat
Boone, but this seems so completely lifeless, it makes me gag.

(Which leads to my final point,) One of the amazing things about record
collecting to me (and I've done it for 25 years), is the stuff that is out
there that pops up which is wild as hell, that you have never heard of
before. Going through the 50-cent bins, even today, can yield some weird
and charming stuff that is not comped and doesn't appear in price guides.
Not necessarily garage, but just cool old music, like twist songs about
bizarre subjects or freaky instrumentals that don't fit any clear category
(not quite surf, not quite rockers). Record collecting is all about the
thrill of discovery to me, not the acquisition of yet another label
variation of "Introducing the Beatles." If I am still considered a
"Collector," then I guess I have to accept that label.

Frank

Yeah, and allegedly there really WAS a Mike Hunt who
went to college with Matt and Mike of the Royal
Pendletons in Bloomington, Indiana, and supposedly
Mike asked "has anyone seen Mike Hunt lately" and when
everyone was laughing he said "I don't know what's so
funny about Mike Hunt!"

I have no idea if this is true, but it's really really
funny. especially if you are familiar with Mike
(Pendletons) manner of speaking, and even more funny
if you can imitate him!

eh, that was just a reply/joke related to tobas allusion about switzerland,
Hitler, me and my Backyard Babies tastes, nothing more... And I'm sure that
WWII is not as much sacred nowadays in Europe than in USA, now that
everybody knows that Switzerland and France have not been as neat as the
history books taught us concerning the jews persecutions. But fuck, that's
another subject, which has nothing to do with the bomp list (and it wasn't
my aim to provoque anybody on this list... but US people are sometimes so
puritain when it's jokin'time !). Everybody knows now that Switzerland has
helped the nazis, by stolen the jewish emigrates that had the wrong idea to
hide in that so-called "neutral" land in the 40s....I'd even say that
Switzerland discovered her talents in the bank domain after the country has
stolen so much money 60 years ago, but that's also another story. Ok, stop
kiddin with WWII, I swear it (eh, by the way, it's tobas' fault, only!) next
time, it'll be about switzerland only, so that nobody feels outraged on this
list (stuff about cows and Heidi that make even the most swissie neutrals
laughing when you're jokin bout that). By the way, didn't get that much hate
mail after my mail, which is the sign that bompers are cool and don't jump
on their Bibles each time something politically incorrect is said on this
list ( apart Johnny Carwash the pinhead, but , well, it doesn't count, we
all know that certain handicaps make life difficult to understand sometimes)

Point taken. Still, when I was 18, I was getting turned on to all sort of
things via Pebbles, etc. (all of which were certainly elder to me, having
been born in late '65.) On the other hand, I wasn't yet as big a fan of
some of the 70s punk sounds I now love. But neither did I dismiss them as
worthless crap.

grave robber collectors, the same type who hoarded Ricky Nelson records 15
years ago, only to find out the value didn't go up one cent!

In reference to elitism:
I think that a lot of people in the "scene", beleive that they are special for having discovered some sort of "secret" that most people don't know about. This makes them feel better about themselves. Also alot of people think that most people are complete fucking idiots who don't deserve to hear this, or whatever kind, of music that they hold so dear. I can't say that I totally agree or disagree with either statement. On the one hand, I am usually apalled with the general public. On the other, I am in no way special just cause I don't listen to top 40 bands. Either way, the pretension and snobbism seems to know no bounds. Hell, half the time I don't know what the fuck you people are talking about. I know very, very little about the 80's scene that was mentione. I do know that Peter Buck was on a Fuzztone(or fleshtone I forget) record that I had and I thought that was funny. I am guilty of elitism as everyone surely is to some degree. But I can't help but NOT wa!
nt the stupid shit who loves, Pennywise NOFX and BLink182 to know about even the most pop. underground bands. anyones thoughts? I will be away for a week or so, so if you ask any questions or decide to make a whole lot of fun of me then I wont' be able to respond till next mon. at the earliest.
ciao
nathan.
in the end, music is fun and thats what its about. having fun, the rest is bullshit.

Subject: Posts To Posts...

I see the old record pressing and collector posts have livened things up
here lately...

Someone asked for a good cartridge: I myself sing the praises of Ortofon -
great sound, and you can get a decent cartridge and stylus for $50. I would
avoid Stanton - I tried various makes and models, and the expensive ones
couldn't match lesser priced Ortofon models.
Even the Ortofon P-Mount model (where you simply plug in the cartridge on
turntable models noted with the T4P emblem - usually cheaper belt-drive
turntables) sound great.

To get really anal: if you have a worn record, and you can purchase, or have
the ability to change the stylus or cartridge, you should use a conical
(round) stylus. This stylus tracks the groove in the center, and doesn't
pick up the distortion that an eliptical stylus would (the top and bottom of
the groove). The tradeoff is flat highs (loss of treble) and a boomy sound
akin to a jukebox type speaker. Of course, this is recommended if you have
wrecked records, or 45's that have a bad hiss due to excessive wear or a
poor pressing.

One reason why a mint record (styrene) wears after only 5 or so spins is the
fact that the cartridge must be properly aligned - placed at the proper spot
on the tonearm, and counterbalanced with proportionate anti-skating. If
you've got a P-mount tonearm, all you have to do is set the tracking force
on the tonearm. I recommend no less than 1.5 grams of weight - 2 grams is
better. Less weight on a stylus does more damage than too much weight.

As to collector "snobs" - I don't believe I've seen one post to that aspect
since I've been on (June '99). I know a few collector pals who think I'm
wasting my time by posting to a list of "scenesters". I simply enjoy
sharing information, and I don't mind being told if I come across as too
"expertian" in certain areas. I always believe that everyone should have
the same kind of resources and information available, so that he/she doesn't
waste effort with errant information. Greg Shaw had commented to me that he
enjoyed my posts, and wished other collectors would join, but those guys
simply do not care.

As for the comment that a 21 year old is too young to play garage - that's
thee most inane thing I've heard! I kinda chuckle when I read about some
people my age who were into the "scene" in the 80's, but have "moved" on,
and think all of the newer bands playing Chocolate Watchband cuts or
"Psychotic Reaction" sum up a big waste of time. Stupid analogy here, but
"Garage" or any genre of music is like a train: you get on, then get off.
The Train does not stand still for you alone - it keeps moving. So does
one's taste for music - If you are one who has moved on, so be it, but
negative criticism toward neophytes or those "still on the train" is elist
snobbery of the highest order - higher than that of guys who catalog matrix
numbers.

Preachily yers,
Mop Top Mike
