Yeah, I know what you mean. I've been on since January '98 and I really
can't remember coming across many, if any, snob collector posts here on
Bomp. There have been the occasional forays into discussions of label
designs or in-the-know Bompers helping someone else with a rarity number or
price question, but nothing to match the description of the put-down snobs
that could intimidate someone into leaving. Guess it's all in how ya read
stuff.

Hey Frank, that reminds me of somethin' I've noticed over the years of
collecting garage 45's..

Why is it that a GIRL'S name is always scrawled upon a killer garage single?
My copy of the Tamrons "Wild Man" has one Marylin Lyerly blazened on the
label. and I've got dozens more wild blasts embossed with the names of boss
babes scrawled on the labels. This proves that the girls knew where it was

There is that type, but I find the majority of record collectors (and
even normal people) are the opposite. They embrace the major bands while
denigrating the obscure. I once had a collector visitor who was totally
into the Yardbirds, Kinks, Pretties, Them, Who etc. Fantastic, a man of
taste, I thought. But as he looked through my 45s, he was baffled as to
why I also had singles by bands like the Pogs, Morloch, Purple Hearts,
Missing Links and so on. As far as he was concerned, these bands were
cheap imitations of his chartbusting favourites.
So there's snobbery on either side. I think most of us here prefer being
in the position to dig raging mid-sixties R&B regardless of its chart
status.

Back when I worked at the vile Tower Records, we'd try to guess how long it
would be after a high profile death before people started asking for their
records. 3 hours in the case of Stevie Ray Vaughn. (A very cool movie was
when a friend of mine was asked for a comment about SRV's death for the
Daily News and he answered "probably a good career move.)

We couldn't figure it out. These are widely distributed records, released on
a major label, that have already been in print for years and most likely
will remain so for years to come. How are they going to become valuable.
You're not investing for your retirement by buying them, all you're doing is
stocking your next garage sale.

You got that right, I'm still astounded at what turns up. I trip to my
neighborhood thrift earlier this week still has my head spinning. I came
across a crazy LP, it's a supermarket special budget record from Mexico
called "Hanky Panky '66" and features Mexican rock and roll bands doing songs
about dancing the Hanky Panky. Los Panky's (yes, with the apostrophe) do the
two best numbers, a version of "Hanky Panky" that sounds like the Novas (a
great, gruff voice sings "Bailamos todos hanky panky") and "Diveiertete Con
Hanky Panky". It took me a couple of plays to suss out why I thought
"Diveiertete Con Hanky Panky" sounded familiar. Turns out it's a cover of the
Byrds "It Won't Be Wrong" with all new Spanish lyrics about dancing the Hanky
Panky replacing the mushy ones the Byrds had written. There are also a few
Herman's Hermits covers, a version of "You Talk Too Much" as well as versions
of songs penned by Don Covay and Huey Meaux that I haven't been able to pin
down yet. The back cover is a pip too, just like Crown or any other budget
label it has a generic slick listing all of their other titles. Now I'm on
the lookout for "Surf Con Los Peligrosos", "Cycle Psychos","Surf Con Los
Tilos", "Rock Baladas Twist", "Do The Beetle" and a half dozen others on the
Cisne label. Some are even in "Estereo"

Is anyone else out there into old radiograms? I'm from New Zealand, so I don't know what they're called overseas, but basically I talking 50's or 60's record players in a big wooden cabinet, valve amplifier and stack-o-matic type turntable. They're real easy to get over here, people virtually give them away. I've got several - the great thing is that even the most fucked up completely shitty looking 45's sound awesome on them. Don't cringe, but they have big heavy crystal stylis that seems to dig right through the scratches and the valve amplification - wow! You can stack up 7 or 8 45's too, which is good for parties, plus the records you're playing are so shitty it doesn't matter if people spill beer or stand on them!

the ability to change the stylus or cartridge, you should use a conical
(round) stylus. This stylus tracks the groove in the center, and doesn't
pick up the distortion that an eliptical stylus would (the top and bottom of
the groove). The tradeoff is flat highs (loss of treble) and a boomy sound
akin to a jukebox type speaker. Of course, this is recommended if you have
wrecked records, or 45's that have a bad hiss due to excessive wear or a
poor pressing.

Hmmm. I actually have a conical stylus, on a Shure cartridge. It sounded
good for a while, but now I notice a lot of groove distortion in spite of
its conical-ness...and some of these records are new, recent pressings.

I didn't know that conical would play worn records better. I bought conical
because it seems to me that it would track more accurately on a traditional
(non-linear) tone arm.

>One reason why a mint record (styrene) wears after only 5 or so spins is the
fact that the cartridge must be properly aligned - placed at the proper spot
on the tonearm, and counterbalanced with proportionate anti-skating. If
you've got a P-mount tonearm, all you have to do is set the tracking force
on the tonearm. I recommend no less than 1.5 grams of weight - 2 grams is
better. Less weight on a stylus does more damage than too much weight.

The cartidge was alligned pretty carefully (first by the audiophile dealer,
later by me when his mounting loosened on me). But again, with conical, I'd
almost think this wouldn't matter. Unless it quickly wears itself into a
non-conical shape.

The weight and anti-skating should be fine (and yep, it's on 2 grams).

On 78s, I know there are all different SIZE styli that should be used on
different kinds of records. I wonder if this also applies to microgroove
records. I think expert people that do mastering off vinyl would know about
this.

There is surprisingly little knowledge about this stuff in the record
collecting community. I asked Alan Betrock these same questions some 23
years ago, and he didn't know much about it. I regularly see people who
trade in multi-hundred dollar 45s listen to them at shows on bad battery
powered players. I'm not trying to find the ultimate fidelity; I just want
a setup that will be kind to all kinds of records.

Audio people probably know more than music people, but as was pointed out,
you really have to takes some grains of salt with the wisdom doled out by
audiphile showroom dealers -- the ones who sell special green markers for
painting the edge of CDs, to provide a "warmer" sound, or some inexplicable
audiophile brick that sits on your amplifier and absorbs bad rays or
something.

i couldn't agree with you more in praise for the
ortofon needle cartridges. the design allows for easy
viewing of the needle placement on the records
(important while d.j.ing from lp's). and the mount
design of the replacable needles for the cartridge are
universal. meaning you can attach a better neddle to
the same cartridge. with the stanton cartridges, you
are stuck with that model type for replacement
needles.

As we all know, Garage is a type of music best performed with the wisdom and
subtle nuances that only age can teach you. "We're the rapidly aging
generation and we've got something to say." "Nothing can change the shape of

I missed that, but I saw Yoko do a question and answer session about her
