Hi!

When taping singles for comps, the guy that cuts all the Dionysus vinyl, Len
Horowitz (HRS Records), would whip out several different styli. He told me
that even if you have hi-end gear, you could rip to shreds a styrene record
with a modern elliptical stylus. For styrene he recommended a conical (round
instead of oblong) stylus. I was able to find a place that sells Sure carts
with conical stylus (and the same cartridge will take a special wider stylus
for 78s). Just pop the cartridge in a spare headshell and whoopee, record
spinning fun (or as my wife likes to call it, "butt crack guy time"). If any
of you would like to find out where to get these carts, email me offlist at
lee@dionysusrecords.com and I'll get the information for you.

Kudos to whom mentioned finding both mono and stereo versions of albums,
especially records from '67-'68. I'm going to get into some mainstream stuff
here so maybe I'll get chastised by the hard-core garage fans; "The Who Sells
Out" is a prime example of viewing a record from two different perspectives.
Dunno how many of you like early Hendrix, but the monos of "Are You
Experienced" and "Axis..." are a lot of fun, as is the mono of Blue Cheer
"Vincebus Eruptum" and Jefferson Airplane "Surrealistic Pillow." The Beatles
white album is also a blast in mono especially if you've only heard the
stereo version. It seems that Europe went about a year longer with the mono
format than the states did. Until someone invented a little box that made it
possible to just "hit the mono switch" (if you single channel something
that's in stereo, everything in the center will jump 6 dB, as well, sometimes
the phasing is off and hitting the mono switch on records like The Blues
Magoos "Psychedelic Lollipop" will result in instruments and vocals that
disappear into thin air), there had to be two separate mixes for the mono and
stereo formats. Whew...that sentence was long...hope no English teachers read
this post!

For those of you who like to categorize music and record fans and collectors,
I offer the above to you as just really having a lot of fun with the stuff!
And that's not even mentioning different versions of songs on singles VS
their album counterparts!

Oh, while I'm here I was supposed to mention that Volume Three of "Tony The
Tyger Presents Fuzz Flaykes and Shakes" is out and man, there is a bit of a
mistake on the jackets. They list the a track by the Mersybeats USA that
isn't on the record or CD. Sorry! Please excuse this error....I've no excuses
to give you on this one!

Might as well plug the our Dils "Class War" album as well....both sides of
the first single from '77 ("I Hate The Rich") and a live set from 1980, on CD
and vinyl (mastered from all analog tapes if anyone gives a shit). Both
Tony's comp and The Dils are on Bacchus and should be easy to find....look
out for an entire Rotters album soon.

Best from yer pal Lee

Yeah, I have a big old Ferguson radiogram from 1957. The sound from these
things is amazing! Huge and booming... Old 45s definitely sound much better
on this than on my (relatively) modern stereo system. And why is it that
the radio on this can pick up stations from half way across Europe when my
stereo has difficulty in getting a decent reception for BBC Radio 4? -- PJ

Hmmm...maybe teenage gals are more territorial about their
possessions? Most of the '60s 45s I inherited from my older
sister (typical pop, no killer garage) have her full name
(including the middle name) emblazoned on the label.
And I remember a scene in "Rock & Roll High School" in which
Riff is riffling through a stack of albums to find just the
right Ramones tune to smoke pot by...all the covers had
intricate designs and numerous graffitti written on them
in black magic marker.

My copy of the Tamrons "Wild Man" has one Marylin Lyerly blazened on the

Yeah - this is insane! I cringe when I think of the damage these are
doing - probably much more than any kid did back in the day on their home
equipment. Billy Miller and Miriam Linna use this Fisher Price "Big Bird"
player at record shows that has like a 10 gram tracking force - OUCH! I
bought a portable player at a garage sale, and used it for a while, then
discovered it was damaging records (I could tell because the 20 seconds of
the song where I dropped the needle on it at a record show was quite
distorted when I got home). Luckily I found a nice vintage
battery-powered model made by Philips in Holland (with a Mercury Records
logo on it) that is very gentle, and even plays 78s (it has a flip-over
diamond needle, which can still be purchased BTW). But this seems to be
the exception.

I would recommend the following test of a battery-operated toy record
player: Take a styrene 45, tape it on a good cassette deck from a good
turntable, then play it 10 times in a row on the portable player. After
that endurance test, put it back on your good record player and do an A/B
comparison with the tape. My Philips player amazingly caused no audible
damage to the 45 after this test, even with its original needle. I've
seen another one of these players around, so perhaps they can be found
without too much difficulty. I also see folks with brand new portable
units that have headphone jacks on them which look "safe." These have a
mini-platter in the middle, that is not even as wide as a 45, and have a
clear plastic top that closes over the disc. I have no idea where one
might purchase one of these, or who makes them.

Is this on Biograph? I have a cd on that label of Son House's LOC
recordings, and I would call it essential. What I really dig on there are
the cuts with Son and some other guys recorded out on the front porch of a
store out in the country - unlike commercial 78s these cuts go on for as
long as 6 minutes, and in one you can hear the whistle from a train going
by! That music is raucous acoustic blues dance music. The solo Son
cuts are good also.

I do think there may be a release of these cuts which does not contain the
ones with added musicians, so beware. I bought a vinyl issue a few
years ago on Folklyric that omitted them, and the CD of the LP may also
be missing that stuff. It is definitely on the Biograph version though.

Oops! With that last message I hit send before reply, so it had Steve's
whole message again. Sorry
about that folks.

Steve, by all means get the Muddy Waters Library of Congress Recordings,
they are beyond
essential. I have an Lp reissue on Testament that came out in the
mid-sixties, but I've heard the cd
is much improved sound quality and adds several bonus trax, including some
interview snippets. There are two different cds of this floating around, to
answer Frank's question. Document was
the first to put them out, but the one to get is the MCA reissue. Don't
have the Son House Library
of Congress Recordings (somehow this one great set I've overlooked
purchasing), but again everyone else I've talked to says get the Biograph
reissue. I do have a couple of cuts off this, and
they're also superb. In other words, the early Muddy recordings are as
great as the sides he'd cut
for Chess in a few years.

hard earned cash on them. Thanks.

I think that has some exceptions in music. It could be said on this list that
people respect the early stones for what they did, but cringe everytime they
take the stage in the 90's amid wheelchair and walker jokes. If punk did
anything for us was to give a healthy respect for the roots in r&b, soul,
surf and garage and expose us to what we might have missed in years gone by.

ATR vs Dead Kennedys

On October 1st 1998 a lawsuit was filed by 3 members of Dead Kennedys
versus Jello Biafra & Alternative Tentacles Records. East Bay Ray
sued Biafra and asserted, among other things, breach of fiduciary
duty, breach of contract, unjust enrichment, conversion, unfair
business practices, and sought declaratory and injunctive relief in
the San Francisco Superior Court, Action 998892. Biafra
cross-complained against East Bay Ray alleging, among other things,
breach of fiduciary duty, breach of contract, conversion, intentional
interference with prospective economic advantage and also sought
declaratory relief and injuctive relief. Despite many hours spent
behind the the negotiating table, settlement talks were called off
towards the end of December 1999 by East Bay Ray, Klaus Flouride and
D.H. Peligro. The court date, originally scheduled for January 31,
2000 has been postponed to April 17, 2000.

Green Jello?

Jello Biafra was nominated for the Green Party Presidential Primary
in New York State. Biafra will be an official candidate in the March
7 election. Also on the ballot are consumer advocate Ralph Nader,
Stephen Gaskin, founder of The Farm - a commune in Tennessee, and
Joel Kovel, a doctor, peace activist, and college professor.

Jello Biafra's Platform for 2000 Green Party Presidential Primary
(State of New York; March 7):

- - Enactment of a maximum wage
- - Withdrawal of the US from NAFTA and the World Trade Organization,
  ideally forcing the latter's dissolution
- - A moratorium (or at least the forced labeling) of irradiated and
  genetically engineered "frankenfood"
- - End the "War on Drugs", disband the DEA, and commute the prison
sentences of all small time drug offenders to "time served"
- - Abolish the military and CIA, and destroy all nuclear weapons
- - Citizen election of police officers
- - Shift the United States Government to Parliamentary rule, with
proportional representation, and a sixty day limit on election
  campaigns
- - "None of the Above" option on all ballots, whereby a majority of
dissatisfied voters can force a new election
- - Allow individual taxpayers to determine exactly where the
  government directs their money
- - Legalize squatting in abandoned buildings
- - Eradicate all SUV's!!!!!!!!

Biafra does not plan to actively campaign. For further information
concerning the Green Party (including volunteer positions) contact
Craig Seeman at (718)797-0045 or cseeman@earthlink.net. Direct press
inquiries related to Jello Biafra or Alternative Tentacles Records to

I voted for Ralph Nader in '96. I like the Green Party. They even finished
ahead of the Libertarians last time. Maybe I *will* vote for Jello. No way
in hell I'd vote for either Gore or Bush, Jr.! I'd vote for Bradley,
though...

Hey,
Does anyone know the percentage of 60's punk songs that have the line
"walking down the street..." in it somewhere? I figure it to be around 32%.

Yeah, there is a problem, and the station is aware of it. The problem is
apparently with the RealAudio data file (live.ram), which is pointing to a
server (IP 209.16.198.237) that no longer exists, or at least no longer
acts as a RealAudio server. I have no idea how to get to that file and
modify it, but I understand that the station manager has been working on the
issue, and hopefully it'll be corrected soon.

Sorry for the inconvenience! Try it again this Saturday night and see if it
works...

On a non-collector side note, I knew a pre-teen girl in 1970 who, when
it was announced that the Beatles had broken up, bugged her parents to
get every one of their records. Seems she was afraid that Capitol (or
Apple) wouldn't print any more copies and the boys would be forgotten
within a few years. And what d'ya know, that's exactly what happened.

I haven't tried the reissue Vox's myself, but I did have a great time
about two months ago watching Johnny Chan wrestle with one on stage for a
while before giving up and grabbing another guitar... Sounded good, but
went out of tune non-stop (it was the phantom re-issue). He hammers his
guitars. I asked him about it, he said it plays great. Later int he
week, I went to see him again and he had had small string holders added
to the headstock of the guitar - it stayed in tune that night... Looked
greta, too. He said it was pretty dirt cheap, too.

I saw a relatively new CD by them up at the station not too long ago. I
think it was all live stuff, and sounded pretty cool from what I remember.
I'll have to look and see if it's still there. Sorry, that's all the info I
have!

Pekka (Kyle, or anyone),

I've been looking forward to this release. So far I've only heard one song
by the Mystery Action, and that was "Bird Rockers" from the Time To Time
compilation on Teen Sound out of Italy. What label is this new one on?
Sounds like a real winner!
