Unlike the famous 60's amp, most Vox guitars were sort of junky. YES, they
look great... but I imagne that people stopped buying them because they are
hard to just pick up and play. They aren't cut so you can just sit them on
your leg and strum along with classic hits like "The Night Chicago Died."
The teardrops and phantoms tend to slide around on your leg unless you hold
'em like a sitar! If you just plan to play one only while standing up, cool.
Vox guitars are also legendary for intonation problems, like the Dan
Electros. My point? Vox buyers, new and reissue, might consider going with
a guitar that is easier to hold and has better intonation as a first ax.
Don't get me started on the flying V!

Here in Texas, I think it's mandatory that every place have air conditioner.
Couldn't live without it.
Heat, though, may be optional.

I'd go w/out a/c before I'd go without heat, even if I

Dennis:

I'm at work and replying from memory, so I may be a bit mixed up on this.

In 1946 Muddy recorded three songs for Okeh. They were issued (for the
first time?) on "Okeh Chicago Blues," one of a series of double albums
reissuing old recording on that label. I don't think those are on the
Document CD, but I'm not sure.

Homer Harris' "Atomic Bomb Blues" is on that CD, and it's terrific.
Columbia/Legacy also included that on "News and the Blues," a fine comp.

The Baby Face Leroy track was included because it's Muddy's band with Baby
Face.

That's what I remember.

Larry, are you referring to the sides that Muddy did in 1946 for Columbia?
He also did lead vocals
on three tracks @ this same session, which weren't issued for about twenty
five years or so. Great
stuff, btw. I belive there's a song from this session called "Atomic Bomb
Blues" by Homer Harris.

Wow, you must be cool not to have central a/c down south! I dig window
units, a couple of friend's flat have them. I have central a/c in my flat
(ditto heat).

I personally hate the heat more than the cold, maybe because I've lived in
Texas my whole life. I think the cold has plenty of atmosphere, though it
does tend to dry up hands a lot. Right now, it's
cold and rainy in Austin, so I guess we're finally get some of ya'll's
weather up north. Good day
to stay inside.

Agreed....the original batch of Vox's were off a sub-standard quality. But what is being made now is done by a luther in the mid-west in small batches. The quality of the instrument is there. I own eight guitars from Gibson to Martin to Yamaha and have owned strats in the past. These buggers ain't bad for quality. As for sitting in the lap and playing, you have to have a strap.

I have to disagree with you on this one. While some of the solid body Vox gits and basses are kinda unwieldy (like the examples you give below), I'm a huge fan of the higher end Vox hollow body basses and guitars. I have pretty much exclusively played either a Vox Astro IV bass or a Vox Sidewinder IV bass for the past few years and never had any problems. The Sidewinder IV in particular, is a beautifully made instrument and has a wonderful rich sound, not to mention all the nifty effects like built in fuzz. Chris, the lead guitarist for the band I'm in plays a gorgeous Vox hollow body Grand Prix guitar that not only sounds great, but it's beautifully made as well.

I'm not as big a fan of Vox amps as I used to be, mostly because they can be really cranky and unreliable. I got tired of plugging in onstage and wondering if *this* will be the time the damn thing finally goes tits up. Vox Super Beatles are great, but they are just plain not practical for anyone who plays out on a regular basis, as they are a total pain in the ass to cart around.

Sorry for the rant. I guess I wasn't nicknamed Voxarella fer nuthin'. hee hee

Guilty as charged. However, there's a reason for using the ones I do. I've
got the wooden, add-on IKEA types. That way I can keep extending the thing
for as long as I choose. But why so deep? Well, this way I can keep my LPs
on a different shelf of the same unit. I've also got my stereo, TV, and
VCR, on various shelves: they *need* the depth. About the only things that
do *not* go on that IKEA unit are the 7"ers... Just not enough room,
really. Not till I get off my lazy butt to get some more extend-o parts
for the IKEA shelving. (And at this point they'd have to round a non-90
degree corner; and I think only the 90-degree turn version is actually
made.)

Dunno what made me muse on this question...perhaps it was the observations
about how rock star deaths cause memorial sale rack-ups. But I was just
wondering whether you serious record collectors have thought about what
you're going to do with your records once you kick the bucket. Will you
will them to your hipster heirs? Donate them to a sound recording archive

bury them with you King Tut style?

I know where I'd donate my records, it'd go directly to the San Antonio

There's a motel 6 on Tropicana, there are also great bargains at other

Piper At The Gates of Dawn has to be near the top of any list. I'd also
place a vote for REM's "Murmur" album, some cool stuff goin' on there,
courtesy of Mitch Easter. The VU & Nico is an interesting listen -
personally, I'd stay away from White Light, White Heat...

Be seeing you,
Bill

Shawn,

I don't think Flipped Out has quite settled into Toronto long enough to
secure a new show, but rest assured, he's workin' on it. Stay tuned and
I'll post the info when he's back on the air.

OK, so let's make a master list of albums that need to be experienced in both
mono and stereo!

Regarding "Revolver"...."Tomorrow Never Knows" is drastically different,
something I didn't realize till a few months ago! Anything that used effects
that had to be 'manually' put into the mix will sound completly different
every time a song is mixed, so that is really a result of a true "hand
crafted product!"

 OK, so let me start

BEATLES:
Revolver
Sgt. Pepper
White Album
PRETTY THINGS
SF Sorrow
PINK FLOYD
Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
THE WHO
The Who Sells Out
THE BYRDS
Notorious Byrd Brothers
(there is another one, I can't remember at the moment)
JIMI HENDRIX
Are You Experienced
Axis, Bold as Love
Electric Ladyland (yes, it exists in Europe, and on American promo,
impossible to find and I WANT ONE IN MONO)!
BLUE CHEER
Vincebus Eruptum
JEFFERSON AIRPLANE
Surrealistic Pillow
After Bathing At Baxter's
BIG BROTHER & THE HOLDING CO
1st album (on Mainstream, though the mono is just plain out better than the
stereo)
Cheap Thrills (yes, a mono was made in the US for a few minutes...try and
find one)

Does anyone have a mono "Satanic Majesty's Request"? I have a French mono
single of "2000 Light Years" and "She's A Rainbow" but couldn't really hear
anything that different. I'm curious as to what the rest of the album sounds
like compared to the stereo version.

Please everyone, if you know of more "double pleasure" albums, add to the
list!

Oh, the other day, I got this weird 7" version of "Try It" by The Standells.
The vocal keeps disappearing into echo, like someone panned it but forgot to
put the channel they panned it to on the record. Anyone ever heard this? One
of the strangest things I've come across in a long time!

for storage heres what i did. i took one of our closets and removed the
door. and built my own shelves inside the closet. i made the shelves 1/4
inch shorter then the length of the cd's so they would be easy to grab.
and allowed about an inch between the top of the cd's and the next
shelve. i painted the whole inside a really nice green. i have no idea
how many cd's this set up holds but we have around 4-500 with plenty of
room left. when people see it they love it. if you wanted to get fancy
you could install a light. and if you have a walk in the possibilities
are endless as far as customizing for all you various formats. speaking
of formats im thinking about going mini disc and getting rid of those
lousy cassettes. does anyone have md's? do you like them? tom

Last LVG I stayed at the Imperial Palace. (much better buffet). It's not
that far from the Goldcoast. You may want to try the Rio, a little pricey,
buy at least your walking distance. Also, I heard that if you call the
Goldcoast right before the show they have cancellations. Just some ideas!

Jeff-
There's no unreleased recorded material. But there are some appearances on
Up Beat out of Cleveland, The Jerry Blavitz show outta' Philly, Robin Symour
out of Windsor Ont., and The Clay Cole show out of NYC that still exist, and
that we're trying to obtain rights and clearances for to include on the CD
version that can be viewed on your CD ROM drive. Also, we're bringing the
band back in the studio to record some "new" songs in classic R & TYL style.
(Any suggestions for songs they might want to re-record are always welcome.)

Hey all,
I had to add some rooms to my reservation and just called. They had
plenty-o-rooms. I forgot who mentioned it, but you do have to say "I would
like to reserve a room for the 60's weekend or for LVGrind". If you don't,
you may get some clueless operator that will simply say,"Sorry it's sold out"
. The whole place is indeed reserved for the Grind, no Outsiders, unless
your name is Wally Tax. Tony

seems like a great time to talk about the "perfect" storage units for those
that have lots of stuff---about twenty years ago i stumbled across a fabric
place that was disposing of their "pattern" cabinets (for storing those sew
at home patterns)---these are basically 4 drawer filing cabinets 2 1/2 feet
deep that have each drawer divided into 5 seven inch sections---guess what
fits perfectly---so here i am with thousands of 45's in two metal cabinets
and then we enter the compact disc age---and two years back another fabric
place is changing out its' cabinets and guess what (for no charge by the
way)---clothing patterns must be smaller now because cd's fit
perfectly---yes they take up space, but they are also enclosed---and for
some reason that is important to me---now if only i could figure out lp
storage to my satisfaction...

Why would they want to re-record any of their old songs. After all, when
something is perfect why try to 'improve' on it. But I do look forward to
seeing them live.

I forgot to mention, I'm in touch with 2 of The Sonics, and the chances are
remote at best. I think that would be the end all, it couldn't get any
better...so w/o being a royal pain in the ass, because there is a slight
glimmer of hope, we keep trying. We'll see... Blues Magoos are a no go for
sure, but if it's any consolation (and it's not I know) R&TYL are working "We
Ain't Got..." into their live show.
