God damn, talk about a f**ked up first-time experience, that
sounds like the equivalent of losing your virginity to Richard Speck!

Anyone have any particularly strange memories of seeing concerts while
"small"? I can volunteer two very different experiences: seeing and meeting
Mr. Electrical Banana himself (don't ask...they MADE me go!) at some
pavillion and watching his craggy facial features move around of their own
accord, and then on the other hand seeing GG Allin in Chicago and getting a
big heavy Bible thrown at me, among other things...

I must be a masochist, on both counts!

hard to just pick up and play. They aren't cut so you can just sit them on
your leg and strum along with classic hits like "The Night Chicago Died."
The teardrops and phantoms tend to slide around on your leg unless you hold
'em like a sitar! If you just plan to play one only while standing up,
cool.
Vox guitars are also legendary for intonation problems, like the Dan
Electros. My point? Vox buyers, new and reissue, might consider going with
a guitar that is easier to hold and has better intonation as a first ax. >>

Uhhhh, picked up a Vox mark 4 bass out of the Recycler in '87, used it on a
few tracks on the Yard Trauma "Face to Face" and "Lose Your Head" albums,
great tone, intonation is fine, pickups sound fine. I've only used it live
twice though cause I CAN'T FIND A CASE LARGE ENOUGH FOR IT! Actually, my
first bass was one of those Vox things that had what looked like a Fender
body with a Vox headstock. The neck was pencil thin, perfect for a beginner
bass player. Had it for a couple of years till I got the Fender Jazz (at the
age of 17, in '75 or so) which I still use till this day! Again, I'd use the
Vox if I could find a nice solid case!

Denis asked:

«Speaking of which, this leads
to a question I've been meaning to ask for a while: are there live 60s
recordings or any footage @ all of the Sonics?»

I feel sure that Fan Club released a "live" album in eighties. Side one
included three or four tracks from '66 (inc "Pushin Too Hard" and "Please,
Please Please") and the reunion material from the early seventies was on
side two. The sixties tracks blow but suffer from long pauses between songs
and thus destroys any set pacing. The seventies stuff is loud, angry and
fierce. Heck, I wish rock had developed more along these lines at the time.
I did have the album but lent it to a pal - big Groovies fan - and it came
back totally wrecked. Refer to my previous post about collectors etc. I
tell ya, these people who go on and on about the magic of r'n'r and then
treat their discs like ashtrays is beyond belief. It's like if you were to
lend me your car for the weekend and I returned it to you on Monday with the
gear box ripped-out!

Subject: Cool New LP and Cd Reissue Releases in February!

>From The Sundazed Web Page:

Next out of the torpedo tube in February will be a Mammoth double-shot of
garage rock stunners. LA's jangle merchants, the Leaves, didn't cut the only
version of carbon monoxified classic "Hey Joe," but they had The Big Hit
version, a veritable stone gas. A quick flip through our package rounding up
all their Mira masters, rare photos and exclusive liner notes will explain
all. And what could you say about a bunch of Beantown punks who wore Roman
sandals (apologies to Merle Haggard) and spotlighted a drummer named Moulty
who had a hook in place of one of his hands. You got it, brother, they're the
Barbarians whose "Are You A Boy (Or Are You A Girl)" ranks right up there
with any swaggering teenage attitude opus ever committed to wax. Extra
tracks, photos, liners? Irresistible? You bet!

And if that ain't enough (you know it isn't) how about a handful of boss
seven-inchers from the Pyramids(Carol Ann/Bikini Drag), the Five
Canadians(Writing On The Wall/Never Alone/Goodnight/Don't tell me), the Ugly
Ducklings(Nuthin/I Can Tell), the Tornadoes(the Swag/Raw Hide) and Jim
Thaxter & The Travelers(Cyclon/Sally Jo/Johnny B Goode/Shortnin Bread)

And not from Sundazed:
The Smoke "My Friend Jack" (Retroactive) CD or limited 2 LP set. (23 tracks)

The Mops "Psychedelic Sounds Of" LP (MOMS Label) 1968 Japanese Garage Reissue.

"Hearts Of Stone" LP (Moms Label) 14 razilian 60's Beat & Garage Originals
and covers. Includes bands like The Jovens, The Beatnicks, The Top 5, etc.

Your telling me, almost the exact same story happened to me a while
back. I was doing a quick look of the records at a local thrift store,
and as is usual all the rock "greats" were in the bins (tower of power,
Elton john, ACDC) When pow, 60's surf punk mexicanos "Freneticos Del
Ritmo" to the rescue! this record is pretty amazing, they do some boss
reverbed up covers of the "the Crusher", "Tought Little Buggy" (with the
miss spelling ), two songs I swear i've heard before but which say were
written by the band "your mad said you cried"(yep also miss spelled) and
"I love you No More" (a nutty song with a great organ/guitar break) plus
some beatles and dave clark 5 hits. I got lucky with this one, cause one
of the band members named "Sergio" scribbled something on the back of
the Lp. He wrote it to some boss chick named Nancy and frankly my
spanish isn't the greatest, so i'll write it to the group and if anyone
can translate it many thanks (I always thought it might say "Nancy
thanks for the makeout party with the guys last night" but that's just
a guess). he writes:
Para Nancy con carino de sos amigos,
Los Freneticos
Sergio Gonzalez
This one is out on the Eco label, it seems that Eco 7"ers are pretty
common place around here so i was buying them up for a while there. off
course it turns out that Eco was more know for its kuksville mexican
polka then it gear rock'n'rollers, so now I have this box of happy time
accordion 7"ers that i'd like to smash until they are dead. I did find
one more mexican record (at a flea market this time) which is laughable
at most, its by a band called Los Dinners, there is a track on the
record that really sticks out in my mind, its titled "Nasty Sex."(!!!)
Not only does this have one of the best song names in the history of
music, but it also has a slight Booker T and the MGs sound. (the
accordion player must have been sick for the recording session that day)
overall I think thrift stores can still be fine places to find nutty
records, almost half of my collection was found there, so all hope isn't
lost. .

Hi music (and furniture) lovers,

#1 radiograms
on the ongoing subject of radiograms, in the mid-80s I inherited a mid-50s
radiogram from an expired grandparent, which ISTR consisted of a 50s
state-of-the-art setup with all the original manuals, a nice old tube
receiver, a Garrard turntable and a pickup seemingly styled around the
then-popular "rusty nail" design. I didn't risk it on my record collection,
and instead sold the whole thing to a collector. Lovely woodgrain though.

#2 minidisc
someone said: "I love minidisc .. I love their size, I love their price, I
love the fact I
can tuck the recorder into my pants pocket. I love the fact they have better
sound than CD .. I love it .."

yep. i love minidisc too and use the format a great deal. (but i also love
my revox b77). however at the risk of appearing a tad pedantic with the
"better sound than cd" quote above - from a purely technical angle this is
of course not possible, since minidisc uses a lossy compression system
(albeit barely noticeable) and cannot be better than cd. having said that
though it is pretty hard to tell them apart on a good system.

The For Fanz Only release was a full blown LP not an EP. Lucille from
the 72 reunion is there & is KILLER. This song is marred by soundboard
level adjustments which is why it was left off subsequent reissues. Side
A is a so-so tape from the Salem OR Armory from 1966 probably from the
May or June 66 NW tour which is when I saw them at age 16 at the
Portland State U. Ballroom in the park blocks in downtown Portland.
Songs are Please Please Please (introduced as a Mitch Ryder song)
Pushin' Too Hard (!) & I'm A Man.
The Sonics were fairly underpowered for large ballrooms and probably
came across much better in smaller venues. From what I understand the
main obstacle to a reunion is a reluctant Jerry Rosalie. He's pretty
much dropped off the radar screen around these parts and is said to feel
the band doesn't deserve it's legendary status. Bob Duncan

Yep, re. a potential reunion, that's the understanding. Jerry is the most
reluctant. Though he still attends social functions from time to time where
other various NW luminaries are in attendance, and has been known to "jam a
little" if the spirit moves him. So, you never know. In a previous
conversation with Larry Parypa, he confirms what you say, they were grossly
underpowered and had an impossible time hearing themselves. Apparently in
having the loudest drummer in all of r-n-r at that time, he was all they
could hear. No doubt you've fielded this question before, but what was
seeing them like? How was the show? What kind of audience did they attract?
Was there a sense at the time that there was something different them or
that these guys were special? I've often wondered what a r-n-r fan's
sensibilities from back then would make of songs like Psycho or Strychnine?
And lastly, as I keep my records in no particular order, so digging one in
particular out would take all day, what is the complete list of tracks on
that disc? Or was that it?

For those in WFMU broadcast range, or inclined to tune in via Real Audio,
I'll be doing the WFMU Listener Hour tomorrow (Saturday) morning from 9am
(right after Coffee & Smokes with Alex!) to 10am.

Some folks here know I did college radio at WNYU back in '79 - '82 using
the name Evan "Funk" Davies, and I turn 40 later this year so I'm calling
it "E. Funk's Midlife Crisis." I'll be playing mostly the punk and power
pop that turned my musical life around in high school and college
(Stranglers, Buzzcocks, Ramones, Ultravox, etc.), with about 15 minutes
set aside at the end for some of my current faves like the Upper Crust,
Insomniacs, Woggles, Swingin' Neckbreakers, Neanderthals etc. In fact,
I'll be featuring the World Premiere (I think) of a new Insomniacs song!

WFMU is at 91.1 in the NJ/NYC area and 90.1 in the Hudson Valley. To
listen on the net, go to <http://www.wfmu.org/ssaudionet.shtml>. By the
way, right after the listener hour at 10am all you Bompers with kids (and
even those without) should check out "Greasy Kid Stuff," a great R&R kids
show that's for kids in sort of the same way Bullwinkle was for kids.

Again, I'll be on from 9am - 10am. Thanks to Alex, here's what time it'll
be in other time zones: 6am (Pacific), 7am (Mountain), 8am (Central), 2pm
(GMT), 3pm (Paris/Rome), 4pm (Athens), 11pm (Tokyo), Midnight
(Sydney/Melbourne).

"Your Ma Said You Cried in Your Sleep Last Night" was a US hit for Kenny
Dino in 1961, a UK hit for Doug Sheldon in 1962, and was later recorded by
the Turtles and Robert Plant (separately), and others I'm sure.

Greetings all.

Hey, Tea & The Crumpets is listed as playing at the Tigermask show here in
LA tomorrow night. Is this true??! Psyched to finally see what I've been
hearing about if this is so.

i can fully understand the desire to have your cd's
enclosed. granted, they are much more resilient to
damage and wear, but lets face it, also more valuable.
at $15 new and $8 (or so) used, that beats the cost
of most of my vinyl. imports and collectables
excluded. plus the re-sale vulue of cd'd is much
higher. vinyl at a record store will usually get you
a dollar a record. while the same title on cd will
pay $3 to $5. this price pay out factor will and does
attract thieves. it is easy to run out the house with
300 cd's tossed on a box or often a milk crate. no
one would dare do that with vinyl. then the thieves
just take to collection to a used record store that
deals in volume, and there it goes. maybe if you are
lucky you had an inventory and the disc's were marked.
then you were lucky enough to have a police force who
actually investigates the case. and your lucky enough
to have the record store cooperate with the
identification and return of some of your cd's. but
let me tell you, it is always a raw deal. to make
matters harder, if you were hit by a crew who knows
what they are doing and comfortably deals with cd's,
there is no way you will see those discs again. they
have an inventory of past scores that they let sit a
while before they pawn then off. and they will often
travel a bit to sell them away from the actual crime
area. so in closing, get renters or home ownners
insurance, inventory and tag the collection, and don't
advertise your wall o' cd's.

Uh...I like SOME rechanneled (fer shit) stereo...Kinks, DC5, ELVIS...as
there is SO MUCH reverb/echo! Brilliant! I know its cheating, but...well,
those first few Elvis LPs have a certain GROWL about them!

>Does anyone have a mono "Satanic Majesty's Request"?

I do! Its a Canadian issue, not much difference in the seperation...tho'
it has been a while since I spun it...speaking of the Stones...Between the
Buttholes has a very different Mono VS. Stereo mix!

Uh, no.....It's not true. Where did you see this? This is complete news to us!

We were supposed to play Jan 22, but the promoter was unable to secure the Garage as a venue.

So, sorry...Tee and Thee Crumpets are not playing L.A. tomorrow night!

Haven't you heard? "Tea & the Crumpets" is a Tee & the Crumpets tribute
band. I hear they do a bang-up version of "I Don't Like That Girl."

The four new Teenage Shutdowns will be out around mid-February. (Volumes
12-15.) And they are just as great as all the other volumes!

Also look out for a cool new soul comp, a new Las Vegas Grind and a R&B set.

Jon,

The Cavemannish Boys have a new CD on Blood Red and are reputed to sound
sorta like and include at least one original member of the Miracle Workers.
So, I assume that label might be able to put you in touch with that MW
refugee to at least start the reunion investigation.

Rocky.

P.S How's about the original Gruesomes from Montreal who are rumoured to be
playing together again.

How about The Voodoo Dolls, I hear they've gotten back together?

As for 80s bands who I haven't heard got back together, I'd love to see The
Hysteric Narcotics again.

60's bands that currently exist in some form: John's Children, The
Shangri-Las.

And count me in among the people who want to see The Electric Prunes.

I was under the impression that the show they did last winter was a
one-off. But as a *huge* fan of the band, I'd love to see them be invited
to play just about any kind of fest.

>Hysteric Narcotics again.
Yeah, they were lotsa fun. Songs like "Monkey Bars" and "Electric
Children" were big hits with me at the time.

I'd like to see bands like The Projectiles (Rochester 80s garage act) or,
for that matter, ex-Projectiles' front-guy Dan Frank's latter-day project,
The Riviera Playboys. Heck, as long as we're in that area, how 'bout the
group ex-C. Kings' guitarist Rick Cona's playing with? I missed 'em when
they played NYC, but I hear they were pretty good. Or maybe another
Rochester-area group, The Squires of The Subterrain. True, that bunch is
more psychedelic-pop, but I'd love to see them play.

And, yeah, I'd be into seeing The Gruesomes, too.

Or, from Massachusetts, the absolutely awesome Bel Mondos. (I'm pretty sure
you could convince them to get back together for it.) Or how about The
Odds... Or The Time Beings.

For that matter, while I know they seem to only do once-yearly holiday
reunions around their hometown, is there any chance The Slickee Boys could
play?

How about getting The Ravens together for a show?

Blair
