Subject: The Sonics & The NW 60s

I started hanging out in teen clubs in Portland in spring of 66 so I
missed the earlier action like when the Raiders were the house band at
The Headless Horseman on Park Ave. in downtown Portland. I went to the
65 Teen Fair to see PR & The Rs before they left for LA but went the
wrong night and saw Don & The Goodtimes w/Jim Valley instead. Awesome
live band: loud, obnoxious, sweaty greasy R&B stage show. Kids 20-30
deep packed around them soaking in the coolness. But I digress...
By 66 the teen club scene had split east/west along the river with Mr
Lucky & The Gamblers ruling the east side & The Redcoats starring at the
Horseman, which btw was my hangout of choice due to easy bus access. I
lived in the west hills so the east side clubs like The Wooden Shoe &
'D' Street took too many bus transfers although I did this once in a
while.
KGON, a small radio station out of Oregon City supported the local
bands, All you had to do was bring them your 45 and they'd spin it and
see what kind of response they got. We had kind of a Portland Oregon Hit
Parade. KGON played 'em & 6th Avenue Records near the Horseman stocked
them. When they went out of business in the 70's I went thru their stock
& scored heavily.
High Garage Fashion first reared it's stylish head around 66, probably
influenced in part by the cool pics on stuff like Shadows Of Knight LPs.
By the summer, I was decked out in a Brian Jones haircut, wide wale
cords, Beatle Boots, & a black vest with loud long sleeve shirts. The
girls loved it, but it sure pissed some of the guys off.
The Raiders & The Kingsmen were off on the road and gone. so this left
The Sonics & The Wailers as the stars of the NW circuit, playing the
ballrooms & armories of the region, drawing 1000-3000 kids a show. As
many different kinds of kids as you had in any local high school at the
time: nerds, jocks, soshes, hoods & a few longhairs that somehow
bullshited their way past the dress codes at the high schools, usually
by being in a garage band & telling some fuckchop Vice Principal that
long hair was necessary for their careers. Hah!
Both bands were held in VERY high regard by the local kids (esp. The
Sonics) for their unmistakable uniqueness, in the same way that The
Beach Boys or The Byrds were. Hearing The Witch on KGON for the 1st time
was an unforgettable experience, as was Out Of Our Tree by The Wailers.
I saw the garage band version of The Wailers at PSU about the same time
as The Sonics and they were underpowered also... little amps sitting on
chairs, crappy high school gym PA system and so on. While neither band
embarrassed themselves, I thought they came off better on record. The
Salem Armory tape is EXACTLY what they sounded like in the summer of
1966. Don & The Goodtimes would have blown them off the stage, due to
their Raiders like stage act & the fact that they had tuned their sound
for larger halls, something neither Tacoma band ever did. One needs to
remember that there were no mixing boards or house PA systems in 66.
Bands were left to their own devices.
This has been fun. Surprisingly, nobody has asked me much about this
stuff. At least not since the 80s when I used to hang out with Joel
Barnett from the Miracle workers. ("Bob, tell me a story") If anybody
wants, I could go on about things like going to Redcoats rehearsals, the
emerging Crystal Ballroom Psychedelic garage band scene w/the Weeds et
al or hanging out with Jack Ely. Twist my arm.
The Weeds. Now THERE would be a reunion!
I know it's 1966 somewhere.... Bob Duncan

Very cool Bob, thank you for those recollections. It amazes me that such a
thriving scene and the powerful NW sound would yield so few national break
outs and even fewer int'l. But your description of it all reconfirms that
their was a wealth of great music and a scene that rivaled San Francisco or
even swingin' London! I wonder how much a simple thing such as location and
proximity to an entertainment capitol plays in the development of a sound &
scene being commercialized for mass consumption? Not that it matters much I
guess... Btw, do you know Neal Skok out of Redmond? He's a good friend of
mine and an amazing source for the NW 60's scene. As like you, he grew up in
it. His record and memorabilia collection is staggering! If you don't know
him, I'd be happy to put you in touch with him.

Who Sell Out, Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica...the list goes on.
It should be said that all these albums still stir up my endorphins while
straight, although being stoned opened some doors when I was 18 and first

I'd buy a highly recommended album that failed to impress me with the aid

I've seen alot of rock and roll movies that have spanned the decades good and
bad. And last night I think I rented the worst most insulting rock and roll
movie ever. HARD ROCKIN ZOMBIES or HARD ROCK ZOMBIES is the biggest peice of
shit ever. I thought the music was going to be metal or hard rock like maybe
AC/DC or Judas Preist, but it sounded like a mixture of Flock of Seaguls and
Asia, A sort of Progressive meets crap kind of thing. Some how Nazis are
involved and the town folks think they can fight off the zombies with huge
cut out heads of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, James Dean, and Humphry Bogart. I
had to force my self to stay awake. Oh yeah the lead singer of the "hard
rock" band, Holy Moses, looks like a white trash version of Freddy Mercury
from Queen, except with the guy's long black feathered hair it looked like he
should have been in a country band circa 1988-1992, the Alabamas and Pirates
of the Mississippi type bands. IT may sound interesting but it really sucks
and its one of those movies that actually require you full attention so you
can figure it out. On the back of the box it said somethin' about it being
the Rocky HOrror Picture Show of the '80s and it includes the same effects as
that of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video. THe music sucks its bad and it
blows, I heard better White Lion songs. If you've seen it I want opinions

Hi all,

Just recently picked up the Rykodisc reissue of "Freak Out!" by the Mothers
of Invention, figuring it was probably a travesty to call myself a
connoiseur of '60's psych/garage/rock without owning a single Frank Zappa
album. It's a pretty good album with a variety of styles. I'd say the word
that characterizes the overall style of "Freak Out!" as "psychedelic
doo-wop," not too far off, considering Zappa started out as a doo-wopper,
writing "Memories Of El Monte" for the Penguins way back in the late '50's.

On a semi-related note, I also picked up Sundazed's "Beyond The Garage" by
the Bonniwell Music Machine, the bulk of which was recorded by Sean
Bonniwell's post "Talk Talk/People In Me" period. Lots of interesting
moments, although little of it is as intense as "Talk Talk." Lot of R&B
tinges and psychedelic flourishes throughout...

Yeah, sorry! I jumped the gun. I actually realized that when I noticed the
rates they were quoting me for Sunday night (which they said wasn't sold out
yet) were much higher, so I called and... Plenty of rooms are available.
Just don't do like me and forget to mention that it's for the LVG festival.
I figured since I used the link from the LVG web site that they would
already know it was for that event, but alas, I guess not! There's a pretty
large chunk of the hotel set aside for us already (along with group rates!).

Does anyone have the Cool Edit program on their
computer? Have you successfully been able to make
sound files from records with it? I tried to run a
line from the RCA cables on my record player to the in
line on my sound card, but for some reason it won't
record, any suggestions? God I've been working on this
so long...I think I'm gonna go Ape-Shit!
thanks,

Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati of the Young Rascals. Their version came

Enotris Johnson, according to the Beatles Anthology Vol.1 CD. Don't know
who that is.

The Wildebeests were one of the best bands at LVG. I'd love the opportunity
to see them again!

Hey Jon - As I was catching up on some old Bomp digests, I got to
thinking - why not Mo Tucker??? I also agree with the person who said
you should invite The Original Sins, if not for the spring festival,
perhaps in the fall...

And maybe get The Vipers together on an annual basis? : - )
How about Barrence Whitfield & The Savages?
Or The Prime Movers (Boston)?
Radio Birdman (please, please, please!)?
The Easybeats?
The Outta Place?
The Bongos?
The Tonebenders?
The Roustabouts?
Twisted Sister? hee hee...

Be seeing you,
Bill

I could be wrong, but I think Hound Dog only did two 45's for Chess, then
nothing else until the two Toadstool Records (Alexis Korner's label) LP's in
the 70's. If you haven't got these track them down - they're totally
awesome! (and real easy to get in New Zealand!)

while i don't want to start the old school vs middle
school vs new school arguement again concerning garage
bands. i don't want to see all these weekender
festivals become reunion tours. i too would love to
see many and most of the said mentioned bands. but
please don't deny the current work of someone say as,
brother jt. while it would be great to see the
original sins. it is as if the current work is less
then that. almost if you will, insulting them.
